Hi my name is Nate. I found boardgamegeek back in 2002 and have been an active user on and off for 13 years now. I’m here to talk to you today about my gaming problems. I don’t think I’m in uncharted territory here but I don’t recall ever seeing a geeklist like this so here goes.

This is the first geeklist I've created since 2009. I used to read everything on here but over the years have read less and less. Maybe I am in the twilight of my hobby?

Well, here is my list of problems but there is hope at the end.

This hobby feels strange to me anymore

Sometimes I go into the New Seasons seven corners on Tuesdays after the gym to get food at the deli. While I wait I check out the gamer meetup that gathers there Tuesdays to see what they're playing. I get these looks that are like what are you staring at, noob? I used to be able to just go to any old game night full of strangers and just jump in. Now I rarely feel like putting in the effort to meet new people to game with.

I love completing sets
I have all the Gipf games, Alea small and large box games, a complete set of TimJim games. I have the complete 1825 (I think?) I feel like I need San Juan and La Isla for the Alea medium box series. But then I'd have two copies of San Juan. Hmmm.

There’s a few others I’m working on or, rather, resisting working on.
Hans im Gluck big box games
3M Gamettes
Wff N Proof games
Mayfair crayon rail games

I have too many games

I started buying games for myself when I was 13 years old. I picked up Masterpiece, Advance to Boardwalk, and Mystery Mansion that year. Over the years I’ve bought games, traded games, and thrifted games. My life feels cluttered now. With over 600 games I feel like a hoarder. I have an Ebay pile in the basement of games I intend to get rid of eventually that includes about 30 Scrabble games.
I’ve been good and only bought three games so far this year (Wurfel Bohnanza, Nations, and Tales of the Arabian Nights).
I’d like to get down to 150-200 again.

I cannot seem to figure out the best way to start liquidating the massive pile of games I’ve accumulated

I need to start selling off the excess and seriously de-clutter my life. I just don’t know where to start. Ebay? Boardgamegeek? Do a geeklist auction? I keep wondering if it’s too early to sell some games that are out of print and others if I should have done so before now. It’s a little paralyzing. I want a good price and a profit would be nice. But mostly I'm overthinking everything.

Should I post some pictures of my piles of games?

Cannot remember the rules to games

This is a big part of why I’ve slowed down buying games. I hate reading rules to games to try to figure out how to play them. So I decided to try to limit my buying to games that I play first. To try before buying, if you will.

Unfortunately I cannot seem to remember how to play a game anymore after one play. I feel like through the years I have optimized my brain to be able to analyze a game enough when learning it to do well and it does nothing to help retain what I learned how to play. I bought Navegador and Automobile both after one play. I’ve re-read the rulebooks to both multiple times. I get performance anxiety just thinking about how to explain how to play either of them because I just can't remember.

I've grown tired of learning a new game every game night

I’m tired of learning a new game every time I go to a game night. I love playing some old favorites over and over like Cosmic Encounter. Fortunately I have a group of friends that enjoys playing many of the same favorites regularly.

When I do learn a new game, I want to be wowed. I've got lots of great games at home that I'd love to play more. Is your newest, latest, and greatest really better than what has come before? Concordia was the last bleeding edge new game that really blew my mind first time I played it.

I hate Kickstarter

Kickstarted games have made the flavor of the week problem even worse. I want to play great games rather than try something so new nobody knows if it’s good or not. For every game I play like Dungeon Roll or Zombiecide I wish I was playing something fun like Ra or Agricola.

Dungeon roll I was taught wrong. We had each player roll all the dice on their turn. Someone came along and said "You're doing it wrong. Someone else needs to roll the monster dice or you'll have no player interaction at all". Sorry buddy but it still would have sucked.

BGG con was fun but now it’s too big

I went to BGG con in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010, and 2014. The first one with about 200 people was the best. It was such a great opportunity to get to know people in person that I had talked to online and these friendships have really benefited me. The most recent BGG con was so huge I felt a bit lost at times. If you meet anybody at the con you enjoy playing with you better get their phone number because you won’t see them again for the rest of the con otherwise.

Everybody in town is now hosting on Friday nights. Too many competing game night invites

I used to host a game night on the first and third Fridays of the month from 2002-2013. Everybody seems to want to host on Fridays here in Portland now. Usually I get invites to anywhere from 2-4 every Friday. So when I decided to start hosting again well you can bet it’s not on Fridays!

Relationship ended – lots of fights many involving games and now I’m lonesome

Part of the reason I stopped hosting game nights in 2013 is I was in a relationship and it was a point of contention. My friends started hosting instead and I started going to their game nights and stopped hosting. I ended that relationship two years ago and have lived alone now for 8 months. I’m trying to get out of my shell more and meet more people. But living in this house by myself with this huge pile of games not being played is quite lonely at times.

Part of my problem is I have less and less interest in small talk anymore. I’m pretty extroverted but I crave deeper connection and understanding. I have met a lot of gamers who are great people. I just can’t seem to figure out who I want to invest more in a friendship with since most of my friends are cranking out babies and becoming less and less available nowadays. Gamer babies are so dang cute though!

I have started hosting again. It feels good!

My brother has become a board game geek too

My brother has become a geek and therefore my nephews are on their way to becoming one too. I just have to remember the parts of the hobby I love and minimize the parts that give me fatigue.

I can't effectively play the traitor game anymore.

I've been doing this for so long, I already know all your options on your turn. Did you miss an obvious play because you're a new player, or because you're a traitor? Are you ignoring a problem because you don't know how easily it can escalate, or because you're a traitor?

Every turn of BSG and other traitor games has me questioning Hanlon's Razor: "Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity."
