There are games that are odd - sometimes unusual, sometimes not the best game-wise - but still have some sort of beauty, be it visual or other.

I'll list the ones that I consider as such, you're welcome to do so, too.

The games should match at least one criterium for both oddity and for beauty (so at least TWO boxes should be ticked off):

Odd
- unusual, quirky theme
- unlikely, un-popular, non-mainstream theme

Beatiful
- unusual, fascinating artwork or components
- depth of the concept

To be clear: The games could be both unplayable or blockbusters.

I have mentioned it in the previous comment, and I think it fits the list as well.

As I said, I reckon this artwork - read: drawing style - is more popular than Corto Maltese. Tom Vasel said it looks like Tintin and that is just true - same school of artists.
Here I was especially surprised that the designers didn't choose Tintin. After the Spielberg movie it should be easier to sell a Tintin game than Blake & Mortimer. (On the other hand I've heard a lot that it is very difficult to get the license for Tintin.) So the choice of the IP makes it an odd game alone.

Also here I have to admit I haven't played Witness yet. After watching reviews I still can't figure why the game is met by so much praise. I don't doubt it's a great game, but apart from the theme/IP also the gameplay seems to make this game special.

I thought about creating this list while browsing for good euro-style comic-book-based games. Euro-style comic books, that is, not euro-games.

Apparently Witness and Corto are the only ones of notice - and I wonder why? There are lots of Marvel/DC or anime games. Aren't the great European comic book series mainstream enough?

While Witness respectively Blake & Mortimer is drawn in the popular and easily appealing french-belgian ligne-claire style, Hugo Pratt and his Corto Maltese is rather special.

So it seems fitting when Tom Vasel emphasises in his review that Corto is an interesting game (not great, but good). I was suprised that he (the infamous super hero fan) liked the artwork that much. I guess Pratt should be considered not good, but great and definitely special.

So, while I haven't played Corto myself, this seems to be a game both beautiful and odd.

PS. There's an equally nice website for this game: http://www.corto-thegame.com/en.html

Very unusual game, using light and shadow as components to the play is brilliant. The effect is truly beautiful, if somewhat unsettling, at least for some.

Published in 1974, this odd but beautiful game is about creating a solar system and then a planet on which you then create life and develop it up through technologies to beyond the modern era. Sadly the actual game play is not all that exciting, being a tile laying game where you are basically playing numbered tiles in order. Of course there is a bit more to it than that, but not a whole lot really.

Here are a few images from the gallery:

This is the game that came to my mind after browsing the comic book games.

I'm a fan of the Moby-Dick topic and was excited to find this. I read the reviews which told me it's not a game at all: Draw cards, do what they say, roll dice and find out if you make it.

I bought it anyway.

Some say the game is a work of art itself. At least it seems to answer high standards of literary studies. I bought it because of it's beauty and as a part of a small Moby-Dick-collection.

And I try to create a solitaire risk-and-ressource-management game out of it

This is certainly one of the oddest games I know. The theme is the forces of anarchy and creativity vs. the grey concrete world of authority, order and uniformity.

The game has penguins, octopi, rats, police, computers, dragons and more.

The art is interesting and compelling in a strange sense.
