A Geek Chat League is a weekly discussion-group format for people who love gaming and enjoy talking about games. It is intended to foster depth and familiarity, producing engaging content and worthwhile interaction. Members get to know one another, establish shared interests, and generally develop a friendly and productive environment.

Of necessity, each division of GCL is kept relatively small (typically between 12-16 members, though individual divisions may incline one way or the other). A tight-knit discussion group tends to function more smoothly than a free-for-all. It allows individuals to be heard and understood, and for each participant to keep up and enjoy multiple topics as the week progresses. The format is geeklist-based, and lists are not published to the BGG front page.

Policy:
If you're a lurker or have otherwise discovered GCL Gelato, feel free to read along with us and see what the members have to say on everything under the sun. If you have a constructive comment or something else you think would add to the discussion, consider posting it — if it's helpful, respectful, and polite to the discussion group as a whole, as well as to its individual members.

This week is about each of you. I will roll a die, and confer your top 10. Tell us why that game is in your top 10, and why we should love it or at least try it. Evangelize, extol, and spread the love.

Howdy all!

I apologize for being AWOL for so long. I only just got in some real face to face games last night, minus Bohnanza a few weeks ago.

My son and I played Jenga, Martian Dice, and Star Wars Angry Birds Jenga last night.

As some of you may remember (if you remember me at all, it's been a while! ) I received a promotion at the beginning of April, which subsequently took up a vast, vast majority of my time. It was overall a good thing, but it also required me to commit a lot of extra time to learning my new position, as well as to bringing my experience to bear on the position.

I basically came in and they had another person in the same position who I was ostensibly going to learn from. Instead, I quickly found out that he had alienated many of our clients, so I have been essentially spending my first month in that position repairing near-broken relationships.

On top of that, the company is going through a potential (and good) reorganization so things have been even more hectic because of that.

However, I've finally gotten most of the work in-line, and I've more or less gotten the hang of the new position, and I'm looking forward to getting some more game time in, not to mention BGG time!

That's been my past.. month? I guess now.

Also, thanks for all my PBF games for their patience while I was going through all this as well!

I really hope everyone has been doing very well, and I have missed the discussions and company of my fellow Gelati!

Have a great week everyone!

This is the week that was:

10   Twilight Struggle ACTS ladder game
 8   Cuba Libre
6   Roll Through the Ages: The Bronze Age

Nothing terribly huge to report this week. TS is the start of my latest ladder game. Cuba Libre is officially on the books, but pending Tommy's new Vassal/Ubuntu installation. Roll Through the Ages probably deserves better than a 6 from me, but a 6 is a game I'm perfectly happy to play so maybe not.

This past week (through date of posting), these games continued:
Thunder Alley, Pax Porfiriana

This past week, these games concluded:
None

This past week, these games/accessories were acquired:
I submitted my backer survey for Thunderbirds.

This week, these games are on my radar:
The Last Spike. Columbia Games is re-issuing this one, and they just put it up on KS. $29 seems like a reasonable deal to me. The game might be a decent substitute for Transamerica

This past week, these interesting things happened in my games and my life:
1. Sick cat update. Kandinsky had a urinary tract blockage back in January and eventually after many $$ spent and tests and other things, surgery to correct the problem (four figures) was discussed but ultimately we opted not to. Ultimately, we figured out there was a serious infection in his bladder and after antibiotics all was well.

Last week, he had trouble again, and this time we took him to a family friend who works at a vet clinic that's out of the way for us. We went pretty much every day and he progressively did a number of different tests and ultimately determined what the problem is. He has another urinary tract infection, though not as bad as last time, and he's on medication. He also apparently has a narrow urethra right at the end of the tract and if he's squatting the wrong way, he's "pinching the hose".

Now, as comical as it might sound, giving the cat a *cough* reach around could un-pinch the hose and let him pee freely, but that's not exactly easy to do, especially since I'm not always going to be around for when he needs to go. However when he's not got an infection he doesn't have a problem.

In this case, the surgery that's available to male cats would fix the problem, but it's very expensive and even if he had an episode 3-4 times a year, for the lifetime of his nibs the medication would be a fraction of the surgical cost, so for now it's vigilance and being even more relentless about litter box hygiene.

Camille, the other cat in our house, is healthily indifferent to the whole situation.

2. It'll be in next week's report, but I dusted off Around the World in 80 Days tonight with my wife and the Kelda. We have the rules and event cards in French, so we played en français. I'd dismissed this game as light, but it really is quite a vicious little race game. More next week when I've had a chance to think about it some more.

3. The warm spring weather has come to stay I think. We've turned on the ceiling fan. We still haven't switched out the winter tires. The grill needs a serious scrubbing. A long weekend is coming up.

4. April board gaming: BANG! The Dice Game 3, Scrabble 3, Twilight Struggle 3, Roll Through the Ages: The Bronze Age 2, Bananagrams 1, The Castles of Burgundy 1, Combat Commander: Europe 1, Glen More 1, Keyflower 1 1, Merchant of Venus (second edition) 1, Mint Tin Aliens 1, Mint Tin Pirates 1, Pax Porfiriana 1, Power Grid 1, San Juan 1, Tzolk'in: The Mayan Calendar 1

5. Good eats. For her birthday my wife asked for a nice roast chicken dinner. I'm going to bake bread again since we're out. This coming long weekend we're hosting a brunch for close friends in a tradition we started in lieu of paying a lot of money to attend the Vinter's Brunch at the Vancouver International Wine Festival (tickets were $150 a head this year).

I'm gonna cheat and list TWO games I played this week as separate entries, because awesomeness.

Friday played Die Macher for the first time, five player. I would like to thank the voters of Hesse for providing me the margin to become Chancellor of Germany.

I often recount a little anecdote about how much hype I had heard about Paris before ever going there, and how I was prepared to be disappointed. But then I got to Paris, and the hype was deserved.

Then how much hype I had heard about Hawaii before ever going there, and how I was prepared to be disappointed. But then I got to Hawaii, and the hype was deserved.

Well, I had heard a lot of hype about Die Macher before ever getting to play it, and how I was prepared to be disappointed. But then I got to play Die Macher, and the hype was deserved.

The second dose of grailish awesomeness was a game of Advanced Civ on Saturday. Disappointingly, only four player (one player was sick; the other just blew us off to do something else). But still a great game.

Highlights: the Barbarian Hordes punished the Thracians repeatedly. My Egyptians were relatively lucky on calamities. Pirates ruled - they had 13 cities at one point! The Assyrians were pulling away with things until the rest of us ganged up on them for a couple of turns late in the game. The game ended up being close between Babylon (#1), Egypt (#2) and Assyria (#3). If only the Thracians had traded Iconoclasm & Heresy to Babylon on the last turn - the loss of his cities would have given me the win.

Lots of fun. Nine hours, to be specific.

Other gaming: PBEM of Clash of the Monarchs. Tommy and I are entering a struggle in Romania, at last, in 1989. Thunder Alley seems to be stalled in the pits.

And didn't we start a Gelato Cuba Libre game?

I also solitaired The Tide at Sunrise: The Russo-Japanese War, 1904-1905 several times. A fine, basic hex-and-CRT wargame covering the land conflict. It works well and is really enjoyable, though so far I haven't done well with Japan. There is also an optional naval module which looks neat, but isn't well-suited for solitaire.

Also played a game Unconditional Surrender! Case Blue (the July-Nov 1942 one) before Die Macher - Mark's Germans did quite well, pushing on Stalingrad, but the victory conditions for the Germans in that game are very difficult to achieve. In my solo plays, I've never hit it.

No games for me this week ...

But I went to my dentist for the last part of the treatment and I'm finally back in the culinary world with all my teeth! To celebrate this wonderful event, I invited a couple of friends on Saturday and we grilled fine steaks with chuckwagon beans and taters! Wonderful! I loved it!!!

Ingalisa's final exam also went well so far; today was mathematics, tomorrow it's Italian. Music will be a piece of cake for her, I guess. meeple

The hockey championship just saw Austria's team winning against Germany in the penalty shoot-out ... just two points. Now it all depends on France if we will be relegated in the B-league or if we could stay in A. Our problem - also in the games against Latvia and France - is that we don't have a real goalgetter!
Tomorrow we play against Canada, and I guess we will try to lose without humiliation meeple

This week will see more games. I hope! meeple

x1 Time Agent
x3 Race for the Galaxy
x10 New prototype

Just an average gaming week here. A group of design-minded folks and I got together to play some Tom Lehmann games. We played 3 games of Race and then a round of Time Agent. I loved Time Agent, which I thought was just spectacular game that did a lot with a very simple rules set.

We also played some Race. Though its not my style, I really admire the design. The game collapses almost all of the typical euro-paradigms into one clean, 30 minute package. That's an impressive achievement and there's a lot folks can learn from the way its built.

I spent a few evenings working on my new game. The design is beginning to come together. The game is very short and simple but also very hard. Cati hates it. I want think the design is moving in the right direction, but I'm not really sure. The mathematical underpinnings of the game are pretty complicated, but I'm not sure they come together to produce a viable game. Cati would prefer that I make something more complicated, with lots of flywheels and gears. I want to make some weird hybrid between Race for the Galaxy and Locomotive Werks.

In any case, this will have to remain a "lunchbreak" project for the next week and I tie up the semester. I've got a pile of essays to attend to and plenty to write.

6   Spinderella - Definitely a gimmick game, but it's a really cool gimmick. Something that would definitely come from the creative mind of Roberto Fraga
 10   One Night Ultimate Werewolf
6   Beasty Bar - Not sure on this one. Unusual theme and artwork, quite random, but quick enough where it might not matter. Like Koryŏ, I'm not a fan of having to remember all of the special powers of a bunch of cards.
6   Assel Schlamassel - Definitely the weakest of the series. Kind of fun, but too prone to errors to make a great game.
7   The Voyages of Marco Polo - I can see why people like this. When you hear each special power, you think, "That is broken!" But when you play, they are all strangely balanced. Bad die rolls will definitely hurt you, though.
 6   San Juan
 10   Nertz

This week I was able to attend a concert by Stephin Merritt of The Magnetic Fields/6ths/Future Bible Heros/Gothic Archies. It was at a really nice venue, this hall on the grounds of a cemetery. Stephin played ukelele, Sam Davol was on cello. I much preferred the stripped down arrangements over the originals, which often use synthesizers or heavy distortion. Many of the songs were quite beautiful, which is not the first adjective I would use to describe his songs. They played 26 songs, one for each letter of the alphabet. My favorite was "Shipwrecked", a song written for Lemony Snicket's "A Series of Unfortunate Events" books. The venue was wonderful - it probably accommodates around 150 people. At this point I probably wouldn't want to go to a concert that's much bigger.

This week in the life and time of me

This past week, these games were played :

 N/A   PitchCar x4
Recieved this and have played and built a couple of tracks with my daughter and her friends.
 8   Formula D x2
2 solo races of the new expansion, Formula D: Circuits 6 – Austin & Nevada Ride. A 1 lap race on Austin where 5o f 10 cars survived. Had some brutal crashes. A very good track.
Also had a 3-lap race, 10-cars solo, of the Nevada Ride track.

You don't have to like the street circuits in FD, but this one was cool. The added hazard elements gave you new strategic choices for the race. Risk the jump in the picture in 5th and make the turn or miss the jump or go down to 4th and be safe but slow. Several other hazards around the track added fun.
This concluded my 10 race, 10 car solo season.
N/A   The Haunted Clock Tower x2
Best memory style game I have tried. Co-op to get families of 3 Ghosts to bed before the clock runs out. 1 win and 1 loss.
10   Claustrophobia Tried out a new unofficial solo variant where the Demon is automated. Took out the surprise, screw you element a human Demon player is capable of, but left enough choices and fun for the Human player to be a cool play. Will play this more as it worked well. Such an awesome game 2-player and now fun solo too. What more can we want?
N/A   Click Clack Lumberjack Always a fun game.
N/A   Memoir '44 Soloed one of the new scenarios from the new VE-DAY scenario booklet. Good fun.

This past week, these games continued on vassal:
Space Empires: 4X 2 ongoing games. One with some SGOYT folks and the Gelato one. TITANS for the win!
Memoir '44: Campaign Book Volume 1 3 s\ongoing games in the Barbarossa campaign. Slow going as both have rela life things at the moment.
Memoir '44: Tigers in the SnowOperation Market Garden as the Allies.
1830: The Coalfields Endgame has commenced, they say?
Cuba Libre Trying to win as the Governmenet.
Thunder Alley Just finished with pitting in the Gelato game.SGOYT one is slowly moving towards the end.

This past week, these games/accessories were acquired:
PitchCar
PitchCar Extension 2: More Speed More Fun
PitchCar Special Long Straights
PitchCar Extension 4: Stunt Race
The Haunted Clock Tower
Formula D: Circuits 6 – Austin & Nevada Ride

This past week, these games/accessories were on my radar:
PitchCar Extension since that one is out of stock here in Norway.
Empire of the Sun Talks of this on the GMT page over on CSW have had me browsing it. Added solorules is a plus, but likely too long and complicated to master to see playtime. Looks awesome though.
Silver Bayonet: The First Team in Vietnam, 1965 New edition drew some interest this week as a new article on the map showed up on the insidegmt blog. Awesome looking beta map. But know next to nothing about how this game plays, so not likely to buy it.

This past week, these intersting things happened:
Wife and son left for Spain on Tuesday, back early June.
Have tried to bingewatch Daredevil on Netflix, but it is one of those shows I just can't watch more than one episode at a time. It is a good show, but not enough desire to watch more than one episode at a time.

Bought some frozen salmon on Saturday morning for use this week. Found it on Sunday evening together with the bread in that drawer. Good thinging there, man. Have to buy new salmon. Luckily it was in plastic so the drawer wasen't full of fish.
