Drive Thru Review - Top 100 Games of All Time

Run down of my favorite 100 games of all time (this week). I've released a video series detailing this list. You can find them all linked below. I went back through and paraphrased a couple of quotes from the videos for each of the games. I've also marked which games work Great with two!*. I know a lot of folks don't have a game group, but only a single gaming partner. I try to make mention of this in the videos when it occurs to me, but... it doesn't always occur to me.

Click HERE for a complete YouTube Playlist of all the videos.

I've also added these videos to the Drive Thru Live audio podcast feed:

"The combination of the real estate market combined with a cool Dutch Auction mechanism really sets this one apart for me. The auction layered on top of properties that have an inherent worth really changes things up from what I typically see. Do you get into the immediately better neighborhoods that you will invariably have to pay more for, or do you gobble up some of the lesser value areas? Focus on shipping? By the way, what are your opponents doing?"

"One of my go-to Gateway Games. Very easy to explain with some fun push your luck elements. Easy to explain the game in stages. Gorgeous components and art, which are attractive for an introductory game. I don't really enjoy the expansion at all. It's not worth the extra fiddle."

"The intricacies and details of the mechanics is what elicits the theme. If you are into heavy Euros at all, you should give this a shot. The board looks insane, but it's actually very functional and presents the game well. Crunchy and surprisingly thematic goodness."

"Fantastic, two player, worker placement game that's always going to take about half an hour. The expansions are a necessity for me. The extra buildings go a long to adding a fair amount of variability and replayability. This is one of those 'bang for your buck' games. There's a ton here for such a small package."

"Similar to Love Letter, but you can change up the deduction and change up the metagame from game to game. The amount you can change it up is much more than I initially expected. Definitely pick up a couple of the different sets if you want to try this. We played this off and on for weeks at lunch."

"The best hidden movement game. Unlike most of this type of game, it plays great at all player counts. Raises the hair on my arms with the harrowing escapes and variability of the special abilities. The Ameritrash elements fit perfectly. The traitor mechanic at the five player count really throws a wrinkle on this style of game."

"Better than Scrabble. Because of the special abilities on the cards, there are more interesting decisions. The extra deckbuilding mechanics allow for more to think about than, 'Should I leave the Triple Word spot open?' It works well at all player counts. Really can't recommend this enough for folks who like Scrabble. "

"The board itself elicits a lot of theme. You can see the evolution of this place and time as the city of New Amsterdam develops. In terms of the auction, you actually bid with everything you have. Not just the money. This is great! The intrinsic value of resources is driven by the players, so it's going to change from round to round and game to game."

We can engage socially, but still be engaged and preoccupied with this relatively crunchy game. Easy breezy Feld. Plays like butter. Ugly as sin!"

"Tricky to explain quickly. It's sort of a 'stock' game, with a kind of pseudo drafting and engine building thingamajig. It has an interesting resource generation engine that guides how you build your card tableau. Very had to explain without getting into too much detail. I've done a video on it and a written review for better information. Unfortunately, it's really hard to find in the US."

"The obviously interesting thing about Cosmic Encounter is how the alien powers interact. I have played games where it falls flat, but you can also have setups that are very dynamic and memorable. The whimsical alliance structure is a riot. The hand management is interesting and does provide for a bit of the 'long con' attitude to come through which is perfect for this style of game. There's so much to explore once you start throwing in expansions."

"The app actually does NOT diminish the social interaction. It reinforces the social interaction. XCOM has a Pandemic vibe when you first play it, but it moves beyond that. The tactical nuance reveals itself over multiple plays. The app also helps in this regard, frankly replacing the prototypical event card deck. I will be disappointed if this isn't followed-up. Really an achievement in game design."

"The storm moving around the board, kind of chasing you, and making it difficult to find the treasure is just awesome. You are legitimately 'searching' for a treasure. Other games normally abstract this and it's usually flipping event cards. In Forbidden Desert, you try to deduce the treasure locations (as you reveal the tiles), and that's awesome. A unique game in multiple ways. Definitely more than just a riff on Pandemic or Forbidden Island."

"This one you have to give a few plays. It's good to have someone you can play this with several times, to get the pacing of the game. A game of Omen can end very quickly. This game is really like scratching at someone's eyeball and sticking toothpicks in their ear. If you have two people really going after each other, I definitely recommend it. You can't just rest on your laurels trying to accomplish feats. Get the knives out."

"I hate the Black Box edition. I'm not saying the original edition looks good. It just looks better than the Black Box edition. Glory to Rome abuses the multiple use card paradigm beyond many games in the genre. You've got to really train yourself to be en garde. It can fly off the rails and end abruptly, but it can also have very nice, tight, epic ending."

As we played it more, we've seen come from behind victories. That's what I really enjoy about many games. You can get better at it. I usually second guess my decisions after a play of Lewis & Clark. I love that. Everyone can improve. The game is going to be different next time because we know what happened in the previous play, and can move forward with that knowledge."

"Playing with the expansion puts it on this list. Lords of Waterdeep works well with the gamer group and the family group. The base game is easily a Gateway-level family game. It has a lot of worker placement elements that I really like. The idea of constructing a building and letting other people use it for a residual benefit is a great (underutilized) mechanic. I love the Waterdeep Harbor mechanic, where you can set yourself up for a robust combo-rific turn."

"Argent: The Consortium has a lot of interesting, innovative, and new elements that you don't usually see in a worker placement game. You actually have to deduce what your end game goals are. Also, there are a ton of magic spells! It's super configurable and gives you a big toolbox to utilize. Argent kind of reminds me of Dominion where you can set it up, try to grok the configuration, and go. The theme is really a breath of fresh air as well."
