Far too many months has passed since I had gone to the House of Medina to play with some of my favorite people.. And in our usual gleeful eclecticism we had everything from German Elections to 1950s prizes to finding husbands for our daughters to auctioning and allocating with the monks to.. to.... well.. you gotta read on to find out ....!!

Bar none, my favorite heavy game of ALL. And one of the only ones I play where I seem to SOME of the time have a decent chance to place respectably.

That didn't happen this time.

One of the most interesting things about this game was the contextually LOW value of the cities in play, we never had a city that was above 40 in top value. I did for some reason feel like I wanted to start with a win so I won the first cheap 28 value election, while Ana-Maria as usual took off in her party membership numbers. Juan takes the 2nd election and by the end of the third election -- we seemed to be battling heavy early as Juan was out of Shadow Cabinet directives and Ana-Maria was still running away with the party Membership numbers. Juan has tons of media to control the card that goes to the national board after the fourth election ( the national board has much more importance at the end of this game than in any I ever played previously !!) --- I have been by this point spending and aiming the entire game to win said 40 point election but it was way too overbalanced as I got totally screwed in the 2nd highest election with its 36 value--- by the end I have wasted FAR too much money on this one election-- A-M has the party membership numbers by a wide margin and she matches the national Election board EXACTLY-- Juan only doesn't match one but matches the others exactly--- it seems A-M is totally going to win by the proverbial landslide but Juan has virtually ALL the media cube bonuses to take a 22 point victory--- A-M has a more than respectable 2nd for the most consistent game-- and I have my worst score ever!!---- no matter-- always an incredible time to play this, my still undisputed favorite heavy game of all !!

We leave German Elections for allocating and auctioning with the Monks!! ( One of my faves from my 10xin2015 list)

I agonizingly forced myself to give away gold value 3 cards-- TWICE-- and there was very little volatility in the value of the color goods as two of the church cards were in the burned cards at the top of the game. I had 2 colors ahead to take their point values at resolution.. but Juan's 12 quills to my 10 keeps me from getting three things giving A-M the game !!

Hooray, at last another of my fave old game show titles hits the table to start my 10xin2015 plays of this game.

Notable excitements in this go -round :

Juan made a big bid with the knowledge that he had a $750 card and wins a $1930 prize with a bid of 1900$---

Seb takes a guess at a grand prize -- too low at $4500 --- then I do as well -- still too low at $6200-- leaving A-M to take a big gamble and bid $9000 when she got a bonus card--- The grand prize price is ....$9500 !! She gets the plane !! One of the FEW times in our playings of this where a Grand Prize is won !!

My only prize was another big bid .. pushing things to $1280 when the prize was $13320 but it's not enough for me or any of us to catch Ana-Maria from her getting those two prizes at once with her Bonus Grand Prize win :

Another game I adore so much that I added it also to my 10xin2015 list, despite my horrific performances at this game thus far. Until this game I HAD NEVER built more than 2 of my buildings nor had I even ever developed enough to be able to roll both dice !!

Ana-Maria and Juan had huge money problems and very bad luck on their dice rolls so at one time Seb's victory was assured with him having 6 of his 7 ( expansion was used) buildings built and the rest of us having 4 or less. But Seb then got a disease that I often see in Dominion-- I don't really have a name for it but I am sort of thinking of some coined portmanteau word mixing Engine and Collection Addiction--- said condition is that sometimes ( much rarer in Dominion that this DOESN'T WORK) people get so so caught up in getting more and more and more things so they can say " Look, when X is activated then Y happens then Z .. then X again then 41 more cards.. and blah blah blah" instead of PAYING ATTENTION to the endgame win trigger. ( The few times I ever win Dominion it's because luckily I buy without clogging TOO much and start trying to get points ASAP while opps are refining how glorious their engine is going to be. ) So Seb had the game locked but was just too excited to keep getting more stuff, that I shockingly built up enough money to have my account survive to build more stuff after it was raided, then with some very helpful Tuna Boats ( I really must get the expansion myself !) -- I get 3 buildings in a row during the last 1/5 of the game and from always doing so terrible, OMG.. alert the media !!-- Kel wins Machi Koro !!

It's been far, far too long since I played this amazing little game. And it's such a shame this is so difficult to get because this really could supplant or at least perhaps accompany titles for those looking for gateway worker placement ( a la Waterdeep and Sticky Fingers).

I really thought I was on a roll in this game.. I am the first person to find a husband for my first daughter, Juan is 2nd. Ana-Maria was trailing. I move right along and can remember where the other husbands I need are, and only twice did I get all three of my husband sets and need extra turns to get my daughter all her attributes. But somehow Juan and A-M do a much better job of getting the HIGH point husbands and despite how good I thought I was doing.. at the end when Juan's last daughter gets her husband, I thought I was very close behind. NO !! I have HALF of the 2nd place total. Stupid slutty daughters of mine, just marrying whoever the hell comes along... ::grumble grumble:: ( J and A-M also did a much better job of SAVING event cards that got them points where I was using them right and left to get a few points and to get to dig through discarded piles of husband cards so I could know what was available in the areas on reshuffle. )

SCORES
Juan 24 WIN
Ana-Maria 22
Kel 11 ( !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! eleven !! WTF???)

Notable Quotes:

Casanova is kidnapping and stalking people in the park. I think it's Kel. They have the same hat.
I put the clover between my knees and headed to the park-- but I held it really tight and kept the Casanova from molesting me.
Ana-Maria and Kel have gone to the ball three times in a row.. They're Ballin' !!!!
Juan hasn't won yet, he got molested in the park.

It can't be so long before we play this again !!!

Then it was time to get my copy of this splendid and quick little combo of deduction and varying powers to the table. The shtick is quite simple, a la a very simplified version of the mechanic from Confusion : Espionage you have a set of Stratego-esque tokens in front you that face AWAY from you and can only be seen by your opponents. Said tokens are pyramid in distribution ( 8 #8s 7 #7s etc.) and when it's your turn you holler a spell that goes with a number, if you have said number in front of you , you get to execute said spell and then chance pressing your luck to cast another spell that must be more powerful ( higher number than the spell you just successfully cast ) --- the spell resolutions involve gaining life tokens or causing opponents to lose them. Once someone loses all of their lives, and/or after replacements from the pool utilizes all of their spells the round ends and points are given per who wins the round per how many opponents are left standing !!

I adored this, it's incredibly fast and I love that a fast game can mix special powers with deduction and press your luck. Ana-Maria didn't mind it but Juan was definitely not over the moon about it as I was.

I kept a sizable lead through the whole game but Juan takes the big points two rounds in a row to pass me up and edge me out for the win.

Juan 8 WIN
Ana-Maria 5

This is a quasi-grail that I finally got for a not-ridiculous price recently and going along with my oft-discussed mad passion for little Japanese games with some quirk, I hastily added it to my 10x2015 list.

Those other nine plays will not occur at the house of Medina. In case none of you ever gleaned this from my House of Medina game reports.. it is NOT Juan, Seb , or any visitors such as I who are the last and final boss-word on whether something gets played a 2nd 3rd 4th etc. time, it is Ana-Maria without question.

And her point why she hated this, which I will get to in a bit was valid--- coming into realization as I saw in the first round she had that dead look in her eyes that always means " I hate this and this sucks and why does Kel make me play this crap." ( heheheh)

Her valid point about the VERY unobvious SUPER-harshness of this game is thusly : One looks at this and even with the oddly wonky way you have to teach this ( which I did wrong to begin with -- which didn't help issues ) is that while the WHOLE game's brilliant twist hinges on the Bohnanza-esque forced rule of HAVING to keep what you pick up in order to hopefully create the point scoring melds -- the first time player at first blush may innocently simply assume, " Oh I see.. just get some cards and lay them down for said melds .. and there you have it. " But the point about why A-M and many others hate this is that THIS is not the case at all.

This game is actually HORRIFCALLY unforgiving -- you totally screw up your melds picking up the free point cards AND often someone gets the meld you want on the last selection ( every meld is only available X number of times with decreasing point award) screwing you more, often leaving a player going an entire round without being able to make ANYTHING. So poor Ana-Maria innocently, and validly thought twice in the game because she was so terribly screwed with what she was trying to go for now no longer available, kept asking if there was some sort of salvation rule she was misunderstanding-- after we assured her there wasn't and them's just the breaks.. she rather bluntly told us " Well That sucks!"

Oddly, as does happen with many games Ana-Maria feels this way about, she still places quite respectably whereas I , in a panic about being so behind, kept grabbing all the free point cards to no avail and leaving me with no meld to complete in the last half of the game !!

After our Kimono color brain burning -- It was time to introduce my hosts to this fave of mine, another title from my 10x in 2015 list. Just like everyone else they at first said to the 20-second explanation --" Is that it??" and weren't really sure why this game would have any interest at all on the first rounds-- but just like everyone else-- as the taken cards get pulled out and the likelihood of busting with all those remaining 8s 9s and 10s left in the deck-- they saw how in it's own way how tensely exciting this little ditty is. Three games of this where Juan took the cards at the right time and had the best luck of the draw for the most part :

G1 Juan 12 WIN Ana-Maria 15 Kel 28 LOSE
G2 Juan 21 LOSE Ana-Maria 16 Kel 6 WIN
G3 Juan 9 WIN Ana-Maria 17 Kel 27 LOSE

And our final game for our splendid day at the House of Medina is this little gem from my 10xin2015 list. While this may not have the heartbreakingly agonizing decisions that it's parent game has ( a game which IMHO regardless of what Ben says is a design of staggering genius ) -- this game works much better as a 2-p IMHO compared to the 2-p Coloretto variant , and is a very effective game for 3 and 4 as well !

I feel bad that my given strategy seems to ALWAYS work, so I think from now on for first time players I am going to TELL them said strategy--- which is that if you get your first score pile.. and you are close to getting another one-- and no one else has one yet.. DRIVE to the end of the game as fast as possible.

I did this getting my first two piles before Juan or Ana-Maria had any, A-M was the last to make her first score pile but she had by far the most remaining in her tableau for a very respectable 2nd place finish.
