This week marks my second year in this hobby, so to celebrate I thought I'd make a list documenting my most influential games.

Note that these are not my favorite games, some of them I downright hate, they are just the ones that have shaped the way I tackle the hobby.

Where a lot of others grew up playing Monopoly, this was my childhood game of choice. I think I enjoyed the thought that my initial career choice mattered (or at least I thought it did) but I definitely pulled this out even occasionally in my teens.

When talking about an influential list your favorite childhood game has to play into it.

This is the first modern boardgame I ever bought.
My friends and I made the mistake of trying to start a dnd game of 8 people. Of course every week someone or another couldn't make it, so at a local anime convention I noticed my flgs had a booth. I asked about a boardgame that could play a crowd for the nights not everyone could make it and Cosmic was recommended.

I got a game of it in a week later and loved it, I looked up at the faces of my then girlfriend (now fiancé) and friends and realized that they did not feel the same.

Looking back now I realize it would go over better today with the other games we've played but at the time my group just didn't know what to do.

It taught me to look for games that were a bit more structured and less group reliant for getting people into the hobby though.

(on the other hand if anyone has a spare copy it's a game I'd love to try again haha)

I might not have gotten into the hobby if not for this. A day after picking up Cosmic I thought to myself maybe I should pick up a game that can play two and also give me some variety at higher play counts.

Where Cosmic failed, Small World succeeded in sparking my friend's interest.

For that reason it is extremely influential as it saved my involvement in the hobby.

I am going to give an unpopular opinion.
I hate this game.

Every attempt to play it was a slog and I don't think I could have enjoyed it less. I was a big fan of Magic on and off for years before this hobby and it's not on this list only because I had never even considered it a boardgame, to me it was its own separate thing.

At the time Netrunner was #2 on bgg and I was intrigued by the concept of an lcg as opposed to a ccg. I bought it on hype alone doing barely any research.

This game killed that habit and I now obsessively research any game I might buy.

I am interested in the new 40k lcg though...

Yedo was a game I bought for my best friend's birthday, and fell in love with so much I wanted my own copy. A copy that got played one time.

It was too similar to Lords of Waterdeep and while it was deeper LoW had the modules I could add or remove at my leisure.

This game taught me to reign back my initial enthusiasm for a game and instead judge its merits based on other games in my collection to see if it should be purchased.

I love bluffing games.
I love big fun games where we all end up yelling at each other and most of all I love the Resistance and all the games it opened the doors for.
This had the effect I wanted for Cosmic as my group was more comfortable by this point with the looser play that games like this or Bang! brought to the table.

I have this little red box to thank for opening my group up.

I have other co-ops. I have other co-ops I bought before this.
But this one keeps hitting the table. We love the atmosphere the cooperation. It is the top co-op in my collection and the one I compare others in the genre to.

This is to blame for my hobby within a hobby and if I'm not buying a new game I'm buying a new ship.

The last of my cautionary tales.
Mice and Mystics taught me that I can research a game, love a theme, love the artwork, enjoy the mechanisms and have a big beautiful game which by all rights I should love to have in my collection.... And have it fall completely flat with no way to anticipate that.
