I just finished listening to a Long View episode (The Long View: Princes of Florence) where Geof makes a comment that most (all?) games may list a wide variety of player counts on the box, but in reality are best (worth playing?) with only 1 or 2 of them.

My initial thought when I heard that was that he was full of hooey, but when I tried to come in with counter examples, I got stuck fast. I was shocked when my final list only had 5 games in it*. What about you?

I'm curious to see what other people add and I'm especially curious to see the comments for the games. I won't be adding 6 Nimmt! I think it is awful with 7+ players, but I expect someone else will add it. Opinions vary and I'm interested to see what people have to say in the comments.

Conditions:
1. The box has to include at least 3 different player counts. Twilight Struggle is only playable with 2. Yep, it's great with 2. Who cares? There are quite a few games where the box lists 3 - 4 players and it is very good with both. However, what I'm really curious about is games that say 2 - 4 or 2 - 5 or 3 - 5 or 3 - 6 or 3 - 7 and are good across those player counts.

2. I'm not really interested in party games. Apples to Apples says 4 - 10 and it might be good with all of those player counts. That's not what I'm looking for in this list. However, light games are fine (e.g., 6 Nimmt! above). Yep, I know the distinction is subjective. Do what feels right.

3. Multi-player solitaire games are good by definition; don't include them. Yep, Take it Easy works with all listed player counts (and probably more than it lists). Who cares? However, I'm only excluding true MPS games, not games where the interaction is indirect (e.g., Race for the Galaxy is fine).

*I initially had planned on putting Age of Steam on the list but when I saw the BGG entry says 1 - 6 I couldn't. I think there are some great 3 and 6 player maps (and a glut of great 4 and 5 player maps) but I have yet to see a 1 or 2 player map that I have a particular desire to play.

This was the first game that came to mind when I heard Geof's comment. While it's a kinder, gentler game with 2 players, if I'm playing it with kids, I really like it as a 2-player. And once you get to 3 players, I think it's equally nasty (read: good) with all player counts.

When playing with less than 5, some of the tiles are missing which makes for some uncertainty. However, I don't find that takes away from the nastiness. With 5 players, the uncertainty of tiles missing is just replaced with the uncertainty of being able to get what you want.

This was the second game that came to mind. I've played the heck out of as a solo game and I've played it a lot across all player counts. Solo, it's a neat puzzle where the variety of cards keeps it interesting for many plays. With 2, it's a knife fight particularly when played as the family* game.

Once you get to 3 players, the game starts to include additional actions to re-balance the game and I think it works really well. 4 player might be ideal with 3 player being a little loose and 5 player being a little long, but I would gladly play this with any player count.

* I can't think of any other game where the "family" variant is more vicious than the full game, especially with only 2 players.

After Little Prince and 'Gric (and AoS* though I can't include it as a 1 - 6 player game), Roads & Boats was the next game I thought of. Like AoS, it adjusts to different player counts by changing the maps (AoS has a harder problem as it also has to neuter some of the actions). Like Agricola, it is a neat puzzle as a solo game.

With 2 players (and the right map), it remains a puzzle/race game for the first portion of the game as the players are usually separate and each tries to build the better early engine. Then, as the game progresses, the game can continue as a race game or turn into a knife fight as each player works to advance themselves while sabotaging/stealing from the other player.

Then, once the player count moves to 3 players, the early game becomes more a cooperative-ish game as players try to work together to get a better engine at the expense of the odd one(s) out (with 3, this can get tough if one player is in the middle and can benefit from two pairs while the other two can only benefit from one pairing). Then, in the later game, the thievery and protectionism begins.

Although I don't get nearly enough opportunities to play this, I'd happily play (and recommend) this with all player counts.

*Geof, if you read this, I think there are some truly great 3 player maps and I'd strongly recommend AoS with 3 - 6.

The first three games came quickly to mind. After that, I had to look at my collection. Even looking at my collection of around 200 games, I only found 2 more that I've played enough at all of the different player counts that I felt comfortable putting them down. Pret-a-Porter is the first.

Unlike the earlier entries, PaP changes very dramatically across player counts. The values of different buildings (and contracts and employees) changes so significantly that players who are used to a certain play count where likely do badly when they play it at a different player count. For me, that's a positive. I feel like when I got PaP, I actually got 3 games in 1 where each game only works with a specific player count.

Yep, I said no party games and it'd be easy to argue that this is one. However, it's one I'm just as happy to play with gamers as non-gamers and it's over so quickly (~5 minutes) that I think if of it more as a filler than a party game.

Since it's basically a race game and each round, however many players are playing, it eventually gets down to 2 people each trying to find the common feature first, I think it works well from 2 players on up (although it may be over a bit too fast with 2). Even with 5 or 6 (I have yet to play with more than 6), the game goes so fast that it doesn't bog down at all. Absolutely perfect filler game.

Splendor is listed for 2-4 players and it works well with each. The number of gems is adjusted for the number of players, so with any number of players shortages and hoarding arise, while the number of nobles is one more than the number of players, so the race for them is consistent.

A good, short game that is fun with 2-4 players.

Here, the card row cycles faster, as well as includes extra cards for the higher player counts. And although the 2 player game misses the pacts, I'd still happily play this at any player count. Because it doesn't scale lengthwise, though, I'd probably only want to play this with the full 4 players if all players are experienced.

Five Tribes works great with 2, 3, or 4 players. The adjustment in the rules going down to two players (each player takes two turns in one round) allows the bidding for turn order to still seem relevant.

Plays fine for it's entire 2-4 player count.

Others:
Caylus plays well through its 2-5 range.
Race for the Galaxy plays well for its 2-4 range.
San Juan plays well for its 2-4 range.
Saint Petersburg plays well with its 2-4 range.
Samurai plays well for 2-4 players, and I actually like it best 2-player.

Cheating slightly:
Brass: Lancashire plays well with all 3-4 of its printed range and with the excellent 2-player variant described here on BGG. So it plays with 2-4 of its 3-4 printed range.

An auction game that works well for 2 is like a mentally handicap unicorn:: probably unlikely. But in this case, the dummy player actually works rather well. Naturally, the more players the better, but the 2P experience can hold up on its own just fine.
