My 8th Geekway convention -- held May 14-17, 2015 at Westport plaza. This event had 1300 attendees that was maxed at pre-registration and it seemed like more rooms were opened up for open gaming. A big plus this year was that the library had a barcode scanner with the upgraded attendee id.

The previous 4 years as geeklists for reference:

First game and I ended up playing it twice in a row. The first play through was with the basic setup and the second play was on the advanced setup. Interesting game where you are optimizing paths and assistant pickup points go race to collect gems first.

Two plays of this in a row as well. This was 3 players learning from instructions so we did miss a few rules the first time. I think the draw 5 coal cars and pick one was a missed action we didn't discover until later.

Next was another Kennerspiel Nominee that was very good. Having a small amount of deck building was interesting here mixed with other mechanics.

At first with the card combos Deus reminded me a lot of Seasons. Initially I didn't see a direction to go but I ended up going the path of building up a small number of regions and using VP creation through cards rather than through barbarian camps.

Used the new edition here that looked nice although I never thought the older edition looked bad. We didn't use the updated rules so the extra phase was ignored. I've been looking at trying this for sometime so I'm glad I was shown how to play.

Last game for Thursday as a quick filler. Interesting push your luck game... and easily learn-able in one play. The free gold per missed action card that I got seems pretty powerful. But it's still a game with luck that is quick that has a neat theme.

While it is about stacking balls the game isn't about dexterity but trying to build an 11 ball pyramid that follows 6 rules. The rules can pertain to colors touching or not touching, number of balls, or locations, and others. We may have gotten a few of the bonus condition rules wrong but it was still a fun game.

This was a fun auction and action selection game with the interesting theme about opera. Basically it was picking music/composer and then buying main and secondary stages for performances/scoring.

Smallest game I've seen. Jon had this as a quick filler that was almost the size of tic-tac box. This is a combination of Qwirkle and Set where characteristics must be the same or all different amount color, shape, dot count to get 4 in a line.

This was one of those games where you don't want to be the obvious leader as defending the walls from multiple fronts is tough. I liked that the battles were simplified with cards that then got traded. 1 for a 6 was a good trade except the loser has a guy locked away for several turns.

I liked Suburbia enough last year for 2 plays so I was interested to try the sequel. While it's similar it's more of a drafting puzzle to try and make the best score from the best choices to pick from.

Last game of Friday night. I've played this other years and it's still a great game with lots of people. I think around 7-8 animals come out before someone reaches 100 and there are lots of animal cards so lots of re-playability there. This is a lot like Wits & Wagers except the focus is on the animal location, weight, height/length, and tail length. Funniest moment this time with everyone guessing that the Eastern Gorilla had a tail. ( okay my guess was 1 step up from zero )

This was the first game Saturday morning. This is a very light kids game / filler that has some charm. It's basically stacking cards and seeing who knocks it over. There is some tactical playing of the reverse card and placing the Rhino Hero but not much.

The next game was a play and win and it seemed to be popular this year. There is a bit of Pastiche here in the combining of the peppers colors. Two things really push this above others with the higher height of the peppers as they get better, and the indents on the board for the peppers to sit.

2nd play of Deus...and I liked it better on this play. I was more aware of what cards I needed to put down first to later activate. Then I was better aware of how to move armies.... still hard choices. In the end getting the temples down for final scoring and maximizing them are important. And if you are last, it makes a difference if you can buy resources to hold majorities at the last moment.

At first I hadn't remember this game but after seeing the board laid out I remembered playing it at some point. It ends up being a more abstract game with dice pieces. There was lots of conflict and I was dramatically bested getting only 2 or 3 out of 6 cubes on a planet.

This came is well known as the dress making game. I'd played this before at some point but couldn't remember when. I didn't compete for the fireworks and instead tried to get more majorities on floors. I barely lost out to be the first on all floors but still came up short on score. For next game I need to make sure to get a marker on the fountain, firework display, and the statues for income increase.

This was picked up from the play and win as we had seen others play and it looked entertaining. Only the basic game was used and not the power ups. I'm generally not a fan of simultaneous dice rolling like Escape: The Curse of the Temple but this was simple enough to be quick fun. Plus it's fun to be yelling out sounds at the same time, I can see this being a big hit with kids.

This game was primarily about auctions... the board was nearly unimportant as it was obvious when a spot was critical. It may take some plays to really gauge how valuable various spots are.

This was the last game of Saturday for me. We had seen this being played earlier in the day and it caught our eye. When looking around the library it was on the shelf so we checked it out to try. I've had the card game version and didn't notice that this was the updated version. It reminds me a bit of Scotland yard. It's a deduction game where you find out the identity, build, and mission and then solve the mission. There are really two problems I see with it: downtime for folks not involved in trading responses, and then if someone makes a mistake it can really throw it off for someone else. Still... even though my team lost we knew the mission, just wasn't completely confident to move to the right agent and shake on it.

I spent most of Sunday morning at the flea market selling/trading a few games. I got rid of 7 Wonders, Acquire, Rumis and traded for Princes of Florence and got Conflict of Heroes: Price of Honour – Poland 1939 from the Ding and Dent sale at the Miniature Market booth.

When I was finally ready to play games again I got with a group to play PIX. It was a good group game I played a couple times last year.

The same group then played Backseat Drawing. This is the usual draw and guess an object for a team but the twist is that the drawer doesn't know what they are drawing. The director is describing shapes and locations for the drawer to make. The funniest drawing I did was for Tyrannosaurus Rex.
