Geekway 2015 has wrapped, and though it was my third year in a row, Ive never made a geek list about it before (or ever really). I thought this might be a good chance because I greatly enjoyed the whole weekend! The past two years Ive primarily jumped into games that had a "Players Wanted" meeple, but this year I didn't do it once. In fact, I primarily played games with people I knew, or that I had planned previously. I even got to see some sweet demo goodness/current state of some upcoming games Im really excited about! It was an excellent year!

Ok. This one is kind of cheating. I knew this was a game my wife and I wanted to pick up as part of Geekway spending, but we wanted it enough that we jumped the gun. I should say, my wife wanted it enough (what?!) that we jumped the gun. This is the first time she has ever said anything like "Im really excited to play that game, you could go get it now if you want and we could play it tonight!" Thats a small step shy of "Hey, I went and got us a board game!" She is becoming one of us... zombie

We haven't gotten to play this entirely through yet, but we already absolutely love it. Its oozing with theme and is also a really solid and surprisingly weighty game, but its so streamlined that it doesn't feel especially tough.

The first game I got play was New Haven, which was a Play and Win title. I played it with my friend Kyle, who traveled down from Kalamazoo to attend Geekway, and another friend, Jon, who is a friend from church. I managed to talk him and his family into coming though I think they weren't entirely sure what they were getting into! Jon managed to win this game during the Play and Win drawings too! Its an interesting game that was actually fairly strategic. It took a couple of turns to click, but it really slammed into the place suddenly.

After New Haven, I had to go to class to wrap up the semester, and by the time I got back it was about time for me to volunteer in the Play and Win room, so I got some dinner before starting that. During volunteering, Kyle and his roommate that came up too, Blaine, wanted to play a game. I suggested grabbing this off of the Play and Win shelf. I recently did a blog on playing games with my wife for 30 days, and this was one of our absolute favorites. I raved about it many times, and still love it. Kyle and Blaine loved it too, and even picked it up.

After I finished volunteering, Kyle and I got invited to play Viticulture with several Tuscany modules thrown in. Marcus, a friend from the St Louis meet up, invited us to play with his wife Merlin, Timothy, and Chad. I absolutely love Viticulture. Its one of my favorite games by far. The Tuscany expansion only amplifies how excellent it is. We played using the extended board, property tiles, advanced visitors, and Mamas and Papas. It took all of us a few turns to get going. We played a bit slow at first. Its also worth mentioning that Kyle and Blaine drove in overnight from Kalamazoo, so at this point Kyle was losing steam fast. He ended up dropping out 2/3 of the way through, but the game still ended well. At this point it was about midnight, and I was ready to be done. But...

Timothy wanted to keep playing, and pulled this bad boy out. Ive been wanting to give it a try, so I decided to stay, and Im glad I did. Its a neat bluffing/deduction game that feels a bit like Liar's Dice, but much more satisfying. The art is really beautiful and unique. Its a really fun game that I would love to pick up, if I could ever actually find it... This wrapped it up for Thursday night for me.

I got there on Friday after picking up Jon's son, Nathan. He was out of school, and his parents both had to work, so he came to hang out with me all day! We started with Dragon Slayer. Its a quick little dice rolling game with a push your luck element where you are trying to defeat 3 different dragons, a blue, green, and red one. You roll dragon dice and warrior dice, and you need to get a dragon head, wings and tail to defeat the dragon, as well as an axe on the warrior dice. If you get a hit, you lose a warrior die, and if you lose all 3, your turn is over and you lose any points you've gotten. I thought it was alright, but wasn't too impressed. It was still fun and quick! I got to play this with Nathan as well as my neighbor Jared, and a couple people he had met up with!

Next we all went downstairs to play Diamonds. I had seen it around on BGG, but wasn't really familiar. Its a pretty neat trick taking game where you get to manipulate little diamond gems depending on what suit you win the trick with. You get to put them in front of or behind a screen (in the safe), as well as steal from others. At the end, whoever has the most diamonds wins. I thought I was doing well with something like 17 or 18 diamonds, only to discover at the end that I did absolutely terrible! I think the winner had 50 points! Any Diamonds behind your screen are doubled, but I just didn't secure nearly a good enough score!

Afterwards, we checked out Mysterium from the play and win, but everyone wanted to eat. I ended up playing with just Jared and Nathan, and Jared had to go meet his wife, so he only played one round. Nathan and I played this just 2 players to finish out before going to get lunch. I can definitely tell how this game would be a lot of fun with more people, but its really not that great for 2 players. I think a lot of the fun is from the discussion, and I would pretty much just talk to myself trying to figure out what the clues meant. We were also playing wrong for a couple of rounds, where Nathan, playing the ghost, would draw back up to 6 after giving a dream card rather than finishing giving dream cards to a player. It seemed like it would be great with more though!

But a couple was looking for it in the library because it wasn't in play and win, and I mentioned that we had checked this out from play and win and they could definitely take it to play! So it didn't break up all of the Dragon Slayer as much as I hoped.

After volunteering in the library, my wife came with our kids for dinner, and Jon, his wife Christie, and Nathan came with us as well, along with Kyle and Blaine. Our order took much longer than everyone else's, so they went back for the drawings while we finished dinner. Afterwards, I was in the math trade, so I went to the meeting room, to discover Jon, Christie, Nathan, Kyle, and Blaine playing Betrayal at House on the Hill. I jumped in while I waited for the math trade to start up. I had never played it, but we had a ton of fun. I can't even describe the shock and laughter we had when Nathan had to roll something like a 5, had 7 dice, and rolled 7 blanks. It was amazing. We filled that room with laughter!

We didn't like Agricola too much, and Counsel of Verona got to the table once. I wanted to give it another try, but couldn't get it out again, so I used it for something I've been wanting to try!

Kyle and I then went to meet up for a planned play through of Atomic Robo which is a roleplaying game run on the Fate system (if that means anything to you). Ive never played a tabletop rpg before, and it was a pretty neat experience. I personally feel like my high point was when my character had to fight some vampires or something, and I had a handgun, so I channeled my extreme love for Equilibrium and flipped into the room to execute some impressive Gunkata. Ive only seen the movie once though, but hey. I definitely felt more comfortable as the game went on. This went ahead and wrapped up Friday for us.

Ive wanted this one for a while, and its staying at the top of my want list for sure. Now if only I could figure out a way to get it. Oh the woes of being a student. Tom had run this game on Friday and I wasn't able to get in on it, but he was nice enough to run it again to give me a chance to try it out. Thanks Tom, I loved it!

After Keyflower, I got Nations from the Play and Win. This was the other game I was really hoping to play, and Im really glad that I did! However, the reason Im glad was very different from Keyflower. I enjoyed the game, but it stressed me out way too much. I got to play this with Kyle, and we had Clint and Sparr drop in, and at the last moment Aaron (I think) stopped by and offered to teach us! Fortunately! There were approximately 900 things I could do, and I was able to do about 2 of them. It was actually pretty fun, but it stressed me out, and if it has that effect on me, then I know without a doubt that Meagan won't be too on board for it. So Im glad I played it, because I really wanted to pick it up, but now Im content having played it to not own it. Maybe Sid Meier's Civilization: The Board Game will be a better route to go for a game like this. Ive enjoyed that one.

After Nations, I was fried. Kyle and Blaine wanted to play something, and at this point Jon, Christie and Nathan had arrived and started a game, so I went up to say hi to them. Then I just sat down and watched them play Deus for about 45 minutes while I had a beer and recharged

Afterwards, Imperial Settlers opened up where it was set up continually throughout Geekway. I had been wanting to give it a whirl, so I sat down and opened up the rules, and put up a players wanted sign. This was the only time I ended up playing with completely new people! Someone had played once, and the other two hadn't. I struggled to get my brain around it for a bit, for one big reason: I was the Japanese. I kept trying to figure out why I could make so many people and didn't have anything to do with them really. Then I discovered the Samurai rule. Oh. I want to try it again, because that gunked up my experience a bit.

After Imperial Settlers, I had to go home and help my wife with bedtime because the kids had been being crazy for bedtime the past two nights. Im sorry babe, but I can't tell you how much I appreciate you watching them just to let me come!

After coming back, Kyle and Blaine were playing Werewolf, and Christie and Nathan were just leaving, so Jon and I decided to play something. However, we were both tired and wanted something lighter. After some browsing, Jon picked this one out. It was actually reasonably fun. I haven't played Carcassonne in a while, so I still had to relearn it. But it was a fun 2 player version! Then I went back home intending to go to bed.

When I got home, Kyle and Blaine were already back so I offered to play this with them since they had been wanting to. It was my free game I picked up at registration! Well, to be fair, I actually got Age of War, which I had never heard of, but it seemed interesting. I saw Marcus shortly afterward, who had gotten Sushi Go, but already had it, so he offered to trade. That worked out great, because Meagan and I had bee wanting this one! Unfortunately, then his wife ended up getting Age of War at registration, so he still ended up with 2 copies of something

Blaine ended up just going to sleep, so only Kyle and I played it. It went really quick, but he liked it enough that he bought it the next day!

On Sunday, I got there in time for the flea market, but didn't end up getting anything, so I wandered over to play and win to give something a go. As I was looking around, I saw Isaac Childres showing this to Jamey Stegmaier, and they were kind enough to let me join! I knew Isaac would have this with him to show, so I was looking forward to it, and it wasn't disappointing.

It was still very rough, though he had some artwork for the character sheets done, and the art is fantastic. It sounds like he wants to add a lot of character classes to choose from, as well as a lot of villain types to fight and plenty of scenario material. The mechanics that he has in place are really neat, and the idea of losing cards over time leading to your character being exhausted and forced to retreat is both cool, and places a sense of urgency to what you are doing.

One element I'm most excited for are the scenarios and the campaign aspect to the game. There is also an element of "choose your own adventure" to it that adds to creating a story for your character. He said this was going to come in the form of character goals. He mentioned that each character has one, which may lead a character to want to go in a different direction or do something different just because of his goal, which will need to be balanced with the immediate goal of completing the dungeon before getting exhausted.

Rest assured, this seems like its set to really satisfy the itch of an awesome campaign dungeon crawl while also including the co-op element that isn't really present in others, at least not on this level. I don't think I can tell you how excited I am for this game to come out. My wife and I are going to have a blast with it.

But I do know the two games Im most excited for in 2016 are Gloomhaven and Scythe. It was awesome to get to see both of them back to back.

I don't know how much Jamey wants to keep on the down low during this phase, so I'll just say that its really shaping up to be awesome, and I really can't wait to play it and get to see it more as it continues to develop.

After I got to see those great games, play and win was closing to prepare for the drawings. I went and found Kyle and Blaine, who were in the middle of a game, so I went to get my Geekway purchase! I had come intending to purchase either Shadowrun: Crossfire or Fresco. Those seemed like they would both be good fits for my wife and I, and they still are. But throughout the convention, I kept seeing Heroes Wanted around. Action Phase games had a booth set up at Geekway and on my way in on Sunday I stopped to see it. It seemed like a really fun, silly game. I love the concept of putting two different cards together to make your own hero. A lot of them are silly, but they don't have to be. It has plenty of humor in it for my wife and I to really enjoy.

So, rather than Fresco or Shadowrun: Crossfire, I decided to spring for this. They had a bundle going for Geekway which made it more enticing. I got the base game, plus the Extra, Extra expansion, plus the Champions and Masterminds expansion, PLUS the promo pack, PLUS a couple other promos! What a great deal! This is an excellent looking game and I can't wait to play it.

After my purchase, I went back to to where Kyle and Blaine were. They had finished their game (Zen Garden) and were setting up King of New York, so I jumped in on that. Kyle had played in the tournament, so he got a promo for that, which was pretty cool! I had played King of Tokyo before, and it was enjoyable but perhaps a bit too simple for me. King of New York ups the ante just enough to be more satisfying, while still being simple enough for a new person to learn. In fact, Jon and Nathan had shown up by this point, and Jon joined us for the second game!

Afterwards, I got some lunch and stuck around for the play and win drawings, but didn't get anything. No big deal, Im glad Jon won 2 games actually for his first Geekway (New Haven and Impulse)! We all went our separate ways, and later in the evening, Kyle and I played a couple of games. He picked this up at Geekway as well. He liked Fluxx and the... source material appealed to him too

Next, we busted this one out, another Geekway purchase for him. Its the exact same game as Love Letter, but with a Batman theme slapped on. And I like it more At the end of the day, I just like Batman more than a get your love letter to the princess theme. After this, we went to see Mad Max: Fury Road (go see this movie, we loved it), and called it a night.
