What follows below is a reconstitution of what could have been my last afternoon alive.

Me: I draw an event card. It have a pirate raid icon. There is no more pirate ships to deploy and so I move one from a random sea space and put it in a lake adjacent to one of my gf cities.

GF: "You are not allowed to do that!"
Me: "Yes I can. It is right there". I point to the rule section about pirate raiding!
GF: "But you could have put those goddamn pirates elsewhere!"
Me: "True, but otherwise they would not become the infamous Pirates of the Lake.". I laugh.
GF: "The Pirates of the Lake?! angry". She rage-quits.

It is also noteworthy that she had founded that city next to that lake for purposes of getting gold from there and because it was far away from hazards like barbarians, me, and... well, pirates.

We were 12 years old or so (my brother a year younger than me).

I complain about something (I wish I could remember what).

My brother calls me a baby.

I call my brother an embryo.

My brother throws a hammer at me.

I dodge.

The hammer hits my brother's friend in the head (no permanent damage).

We never play the Game of Life again. (Unexpected Happy Ending)

There are no alliances in Risk.

That being said my then fiancée and I were in a game with four other players... everyone was on teams... of sorts.

A while into the game I realized I could, in one fell swoop take out all her troops, get her cards and become the leader.

So I did.

She threw her ring at me and broke off the engagement and stormed off.

There are no alliances in Risk.

(she took the ring back after cooling down -- a few hours later)

Magic isn't quite Diplomacy for upset players, but the large player group and competitive play can drive some players into "Hulk Smash" mode...

The Tale of the Blundering Blowhard
Apologies, some MtG knowledge may be needed to fully understand this.

It was the early days of Magic, possibly back when there was just the first set. My girlfriend (Lisa) and I were fans of the game, and also went to various game conventions. Of course, we often wound up spending some time gabbing with fellow MtG players about cool cards and decks and such.

We happened to get into a conversation with one such guy who's main line of conversation was what an amazing gift to MtG he was, and about all the tournaments he had won and what an incredibly skilled player he was. We'll just call this guy Lockhart.

Now, somehow, this led to a 2 vs. 2 game between with Lisa and I on one side and Lockhart and a buddy of his on the other side. I'm not sure who suggested it. Honestly, it probably wasn't the best idea; Lisa and I just were not tournament level players, especially on the deckbuilding side, and our decks were very much just "for fun" decks.

Now, the big thing in Lisa's deck were dragons. She needed a good amount of mana to get going, but had some big nasty damage if she got it. Imagine her delight when she discovered that not only was she playing with Mana Flares (which make lands produce an extra mana), but so were both of our opponents. In short order, there were 3 Mana Flares on the table. Her Shivan dragon (which can be made deadlier the more mana you have) could now kill a player with a single unblocked attack.

Lockhart, looking stressed, proceed to ponder long and hard and cast several spells in a row. Which included bringing out yet ANOTHER Mana Flare (thus making the Shivan even nastier), and casting a Fireball for 5 points of damage.

Now, at this point, Lisa's Shivan can kill him next turn. It takes 5 points of damage to kill a Shivan dragon. Lisa herself has her full 20 HP.

Lisa is already starting to take her Shivan off the table when Lockhart declares "Ha! You take 5 damage!"

She blinks her eyes, double checks that he really said what she thought, shifts her life counter down, then proceeds to wipe him out on her next turn, and wipe out Lockhart's ally the turn after that. Lockhart seems completely surprised by this turn of events.

At this point, he's a bit annoyed, but that game was just a fluke. We need to play another.

So, second game. More Mana Flares, which are really helping Lisa and I much more than our enemies. This time I'm the one about to hit Lockhart, as I attack him with a Force of Nature (a strength 8 monster) and cast Berserk on it (doubling its strength to a 16 when players only start with 20 HP).

He stares angrily at the board, then taps two mountains, throws down a card and yells "FORK! You take the damage to!"

Now, if you are an MtG buff, you may be scratching your head here. So were we.

Berserk doubles the Strength of a creature (of note, due to the many fireballs running around, my Force of Nature was currently the only creature in play).

Fork creates an exact copy of another spell. So if you Fork, say, a Berserk, it creates an exact copy of Berserk and does exactly what Berserk does - double the power of a creature.

Not only does this NOT do the damage back to me, in fact what it would actually do is up the damage he's taking to 32 points!

We attempt to explain this to Lockhart. He angrily insists that he KNOWS how Fork works. He's seen people do that before. Half a dozen MtG players watching the game now also start attempting to explain to him that no, Fork does not just let you reflect damage, it just copies a spell.

In short order, Lockhart is on his feet screaming at all these people and getting red in the face saying how he's an award winning player and he KNOWS how the card work. While at the same time refusing to actually READ the card as several people are urging him to do.

Somewhere in the middle if his ranting, we gathered up our decks, thanked Lockhart's buddy (who I felt sorry for; his friend seemed like a nice guy who was a bit embarrassed by Lockhart's explosion) for the game, and left to do something more entertaining.

I was later informed by one of the other players that the argument lasted quite a while longer, with no one ever getting him to budge or convincing him to just, ya know, read the card.

Does that count as a rage-quit for us, or for him?

told me years later that this actually happened. But to fully appreciate my level of rage-quit, some backstory is needed.

Every time all of us cousins got together to play games (usually HeroQuest or Capture the Flag [outside]), there would be fights. Stupidly, we would always have boys vs. girls in CtF, or I would be the GM in HeroQuest. At any rate, the girls would accuse us of cheating (we would), or someone would accuse me of cheating at being the GM (I wouldn't...in fact, I fudged rules to let them survive). Now, I am a very patient, calm, and laid-back person, even as a teen. And I would take these arguments/criticisms/yelling/screaming with a grain of salt. I'd just calmly take care of the situation (as I was the eldest of the cousins).

Ok, enough backstory...

We were playing HeroQuest again and, of course, an argument occurs. Something about cheating, or someone being selfish, or whatever. Anyways, I sat back and let the argument ensue, just making sure that we'd eventually get back to the game. Well, we never did. The arguing continued, and continued, and insults were flying left and right. Now, at this point, is where details are fuzzy. Apparently I grabbed the board, flipped it up, and said "OK, THAT'S IT!!" and left the room. I have absolutely no memory of this. Years later all of my cousins were talking about this, and yet, I was flabbergasted that I did that. They said that they stopped arguing, calmly picked up the game silently, and...we never played it again.

In 7 years of gaming I have rage quit only once. Was playing this game for about 90 minutes, it was my first play and I was doing very well, even keeping up with the veterans. I was quite enjoying the game until I drew a completely random event card that only affected a very SMALL section of the board my train just happened to be sitting in, and I was stuck for several turns.

My mind was blown. I couldn't imagine what in the heck these random events that just haphazardly screwed players over added to the game, so I conceded to go hang out with my girlfriend and the other players finished out the game. Luckily abandoning it early didn't really affect them too much, but I don't condone rage quitting either. I always see things through even if it's a really bad game, except in this one case.

This is one I am not especially proud of...

Back in my college days we played a lot of Sheepshead. If you aren't from Wisconsin you probably have no clue what this game is, but it is played widely here. Suffice it to say that it is a trick taking game, that it requires one to remember what cards were played, and it is normally played for money.

So, I had a group of friends stuffed into my dorm room playing 5-handed sheepshead. Of course we were drinking as we were college students and, well, it is Wisconsin, too. I had an incredible run of good hands and was winning on just about every hand, much of the time going on my own even.

Then my roommate shows up and he just sits there and watches us play. Then I start losing...badly. It was probably the alcohol that was responsible for much of my poor play but because I was drunk I would never come to that conclusion. Instead, I came up with the idea that it was my roommate's fault. He was jinxing me as my luck changed the moment he walked in the room.

Needless to say, a lot of loud arguing, mostly on my part, was done and I ended up throwing a punch at him. Luckily he did not hold it against me and we were able to repair our friendship after much profuse apologizing on my part.

It was not the only ragequit to occur in that room, however. We had no fewer than three games of Risk end in overturned boards that year. One of them was "accidental" but I think we all know that wasn't the truth. I can at least say that none of the overturned boards were my fault but there was at least one game where I did not mind that it happened.

Being a twin isn't easy because it can be quite a competitive relationship. However, being the first twin 'out the door' is often easier because you are now officially the older brother/sister - an advantage that can be exploited for years. Of course your sibling will challenge your supremacy and one of the ways my twin brother liked to do this when we were kids was by beating me at 'Risk'.

Usually I won so that wasn't a problem. Sometimes however he would win and that really bugged me. On one occasion he was winning and I decided that the best way to avoid a humiliating defeat was by winding him up and putting him off his stride. Now my brother was a really sweet guy (and still is) so it took a lot to get him angry. However once he lost his cool he'd really go for it. Obviously this time I must have taken it too far and we found ourselves wrestling around on the floor in an angry embrace as I tried to avoid a pounding (he was much more athletic than me).

As we did, I caught sight of the side of the box which boasted 'games that bring people together' - which it did I guess but not perhaps not in a way the publishers (Parkers) intended!

Oh, Descent. You rascal.

We had a campaign of Road to Legend that had been going for a reasonable amount of time. Both sides were powering up.

I was the Overlord, and my opponents were smart gamers. Smart enough to identify the feats that are totally broken in Road to Legend - Spiritwalker and Rapid Fire among them. Over time, the game became less fun for me; not in terms of 'these darn heroes are foiling my plans!' but more 'well, I guess I'm not actually playing this game anymore.'

The final straw was when we drew a dungeon level where there was a demon lord in a ritual circle, surrounded by cultists. We set up the map, I laid out my figures.

Either I moved first, or the heroes spent their first turn making some attacks and getting into position. I forget. But I remember looking at the board, running through everything I do, and realizing that there was literally nothing that I could do that would change the game state at all. I had no options that could damage a hero, and there was no chance that the heroes would fail to kill everything in the room on their next turn, even if the dice happened to turn against them.

I probably stared at the board for 15-20 minutes. I finally growled something like "this isn't fun for me" and took a break in the kitchen, just a few moments before flipping the table level.

The game had just reached a point where I was no longer playing. Games live and die based on interesting decisions, and if I no longer have decisions to make, there's no longer a game.

We talked about starting it up again someday, but we never went back to that campaign, and I never touched Descent 1st Edition again. Good riddance.

Descent 2e is pretty good.

This happened while we were playing the PC version. Except that, it was the traditional game we all know well.

I was playing with a cousin of mine and we were around 16 at the time, him being one or two years older than me. He is specialy prone to start raging, even if he is still wining but losing dominance.

In one particular game one of the lots of a color I had two of (It was yellow, i think) went to auction.

I don't remember if in the traditional game the lots go to auction, but in the PC version they do. My cousin was in quite a stir due to the fact that bad dice rolls made him skip critical lots to start making hotels.

He tought that it would be a great idea to overbid me until I had to spend all of my money in that lot I needed.

The problem is: I was already plotting his demise devil

I gone with the flow and made him believe he was playing me, not me playing him. What I did was skip the auction at the last moment and let him take that hugely overpriced lot.

I think I never saw him rage-quit so hard I may be a dick for doing that, but boy, that was exceedingly fun to do and to watch. He really was convinced that he got me flat-footed.

In fact, I was needing that lot badly, but making him bankrupt made the game way easier to me. So easy it was not fun anymore.

A few years ago my wife asked me to play this with her and her friend. I don't care for this, but agreed to play simply to be a good host. On the first hand of the game my wife plays her next to last card and says, "I'm going to make it...ummm..." and I said, "UNO", catching her with one card in hand. After a heated exchange, I read her the rule where the other players could shout UNO when the next to last card touches the discard pile. She refused to play that way.

I scooped up the cards from the table (and from the hand of our guest - so much for being a good host), put the cards in the box, put the box on the shelf, and walked away from the table.

This is the only game I refuse to play with her now.

My wife and I first got seriously into gaming with Ticket to Ride. She's extraordinarily good at it for some reason, and will generally beat me 4 out of 5 games. But none so badly as this game.

One game, all the stars aligned and she was blocking me at every turn. 2p can get pretty cutthroat, and she wasn't holding back at all. Finally, she bought her last two trains, and I hadn't completed a single ticket. I said something to the effect of "F#*% THIS" and flipped the board.

I shudder to think what would happen if we played something designed to be mean like Lifeboats or Citadels.

A recent exchange, that I fear may come back to haunt me.

A quick summary, Hex Hex is a "hot potato" game, and if you cannot pass the potato, some cards cause extra good/bad effects. One of those, Spite, allows you to hurt yourself to really, really hurt an opponent. Also, a rules card was in play that said you must tap each card you play on the table, or it is cancelled with no effect.

I had gotten another player mad at me, mad enough to, one after the other, play his cards without tapping them on the table, so he could run through is cards and not be able to pass the potato and thus use Spite. The exchange went like this

Him. "I use Turn Aside Left! Ah, I didn't tap it. I use Turn aside Right! Ah, I didn't tap it. I use Deflect Across! Ah, I didn't tap it. Since I have no other cards, I use Spite! I take 100 damage and you take 200! Ha ha!

Me: "...you didn't tap it..."

This game...this insanity inducing game...

cry

To get items to mitigate dice rolls you must successfully roll the dice to collect the items or to collect the currency to purchase the items. AARGGHHHHHHHH!

I ended up giving it away to a kid who was thinking about buying it.

I still play it on iPad, but I still end up screaming at my device. AARGGHHHHHHHH!

I'll admit that I do get irritated at some games and/or players, but, in general, the worst I'll do is just decide not to play the game or with the person in the future.

(I'll make an exception for Tash-Kalar: Arena of Legends, though. I played this a few weeks ago and it's the closest I've come to flipping a board in frustration/fury for a long time. The only future interaction I want with this game is dousing it in lighter fluid, igniting it, and dancing around its destruction in the parking lot of my FLGS. devil)

However, back in the far distant '90's, my usual game group would meet at one friend's house, and, with no other game really striking much interest, we grabbed this off of his shelf. (I either don't remember or have blocked out much of this game, so this description is pretty generic.)

Now, I'm not a huge fan of the Xanth books. I read part of one and wasn't impressed, but, hey, the game might be different.

Well, about 45 minutes in, I've had the same experience every single turn. I try to do something or move somewhere and either another player or the game itself slams me back to the start. I don't expect to win, but I also don't expect to do nothing, either. My irritation is building and I'm letting the other players know it. angry

Finally, I said something like, "If we're going to keep playing this game, I may as well leave." (Numerous expletives edited out.)
Understandably fed up with me, friend of mine shot back, "Why don't you?"
"Fine! <BLEEP> all of you!" I said, getting up, storming out of the house, getting in my car, and driving home.

The thing was, about five steps out of the room, I realized what an idiot I was acting like and immediately regretted walking out. blush Even worse, I couldn't figure out a way to turn around, come back in, and resume playing without making myself look like an even bigger twerp then I already had!

So, having neatly given myself enough rope to hang myself, I stuck with the course I'd set and left, remembering to close the outside door a little harder than I normally would have.

The next game night, I did apologize to everybody for acting like a moron. modest

Haven't played Xanth again, though.

We alway joke around by saying "I'm gonna flip the table!" and stuff like that. I was playing Space Stationwith three other players. There's Jessica, Jason and Bryan. Sometime Jason kinda targets Bryan in games. I don't know why, but that's what they do. Anyway, during this game, Jessica and myself were protected for some reason that I couldn't remember right now, so Jason being Jason, was attacking Bryan left and right.

Bryan got tired of it and rage quit! He threw his cards on to the ground and left the game store. Saying "I'm not playing that f#@%ing game anymore!". The fun fact was that it was our first and more likely last play of that game. shake

I play Risk Legacy in a group of about 7 regulars + special guests, taking turns to play.
One night we were 6 and I decided I would sit out as I had played the most games.
It was game 5, but we hadn't yet founded all 9 minor cities.
We rolled the dice, and a friend of ours - let's call her M - got to choose last, both the faction and the placement.
She was left with Saharian Republic (commonly regarded as the weakest faction by FAR) and her city in Alaska was still available but her bf had unwisely settled in Eastern Canada. With Enclave in Japan, Alaska looked very unattractive (and Australia was empty!).
Still, she chose to start there, hoping to grab two easy HQ's.
She started squabbling for North America with her bf, and was constantly harassed from the asian border. She got down to one man, no HQ but the other players didn't finish her off to avoid her deploying in Australia. They instead fought for the HQ. (South America joined in too). She spent two turns "amassing" 7 minions, got back the HQ for one turn to see them stolen the next one to her bf. Then she silently stood up and without a word went to sleep on the couch. (kind of the opposite of what you'd expect, uh?)

That was the ragequit. Here is the funny story:
I subbed in and since nobody would let me redeploy, and I couldn't realistically get back the HQ, I went away. Through Greenland to Europe, collecting some tasty cards on the way. Then I went to Afghanistan (yum, 3 coins) China, JAPAN. In a matter of few turns, I conquered an HQ! In the end Africa won in a sweep, but - hey! - I didn't end last.
In memory of my pilgrimage from Alaska to Japan, I founded there a city called Santiago of the East.

Spoiler for 9 Minor Cities Founded:
Spoiler (click to reveal)
The problem that caused the ragequit was fixed on that very game, since from then on we got to split starting powers evenly and she always got the early placement or a decent faction - for much collective rejoicing

I don't know if there were "consequences" for her bf, but I guess they were terrible.

Was playing with 4 other people on my first play.

I played a card that caved in the tunnel back near the start tile, and then everyone offloaded their broken pick/lantern/cart cards onto me, and all other negative cards as well.

I managed to play two cards to clear the impediments, but on the third turn I had nothing left, so thought I could just discard all but 1 of my cards to remove the other three things and hopefully be able to play more than 1 tunnel in the entire game.

To which I get a response: "Hold it right there! You can only discard a cards to remove ONE thing per turn."

In response I just stood up, grabbed my games and walked out. No way was I going to sit there discarding for four more turns while everyone else just continued to pile all the crap cards onto me.

We were playing with my wife's cousins and she was the sheriff and I was the deputy. She was Willie the Kid. She liked me by the second turn. Not really a rage quit but I did yell after dying, then left the table.

I didn't personally rage quit a game of this, but in one game I played of this, the players jointly decided to stop playing because everyone was getting so pissed off at everyone else.

In my experience, this game does an amazing job at creating long term animosity between players. I think it may even surpass Diplomacy.

The game has large incentives for taking down the leader, so the leader is constantly changing. But the worst is that there are many ways to easily improve your position at the expense of other players, even if they are not the leader (often especially if they are not). It all tends to lead to a pretty hostile environment.

This has been referenced in this list multiple times, but it seems that no one has added it yet... so here it is.

The rage-quit is so typical of this game that the rulebook actually mentions it as a legitimate method for terminating the game:

"However, players can end the game by agreement before a winner is determined." (Rulebook, page 1)

In my opinion, the optimal play is for all parties to immediately agree to an armistice in Spring 1901.

Come to think of it, armistice before the onset of hostilities would probably have been the optimal move for World War I, in real life. Was this entire game designed as a deliberate allegory?
