Welcome!

This geeklist will be used to post a (most likely semi-) weekly PBF games of Limes. I recently acquired this fast-playing, fun, and challenging little game and have been loving it as a strictly solitaire experience. But as those of you familiar with the 1 Player guild and the monthly SGoyT geeklists, not only do we love playing our solitaire games, we love playing games alone...together!

Each week (or so) Occasionally, I'll post a new game session for you to play against. After you play, post a comment to that week's geeklist item with your total score, score breakdown, picture (if you're able), and maybe a quick summary of your strategy. However, please put this information inside a spoiler box so that others will not see what cards are in play or how you played out your strategy.

The Rules

Play this as if you were sitting across the table from an opponent.
Only reveal the next card number after you have played the current one per the rules for that week.
There are no mulligans, take-backs, or re-dos. You wouldn't do that if I was sitting there with you, right?
I'm not looking for you to "solve" these particular combinations of cards. These are intended as a single play only. Feel free to play the same sequence as often as you'd like, but only your first play "counts" for the purposes of this PBF format.
Post your score and other info as listed above inside a spoiler box so the rest of us may see how you tackled each week's challenge.
Play as many, as few, and whenever you like. If the next PBF has been posted, you may certainly play any or all of the ones prior to it.

This is for FUN! So, enjoy it.

I intend to use all available rules, variants, and expansions that I can. Some weeks will be straight-up simple and basic in terms of rules. Other weeks will combine several variants and expansions together. Feel free to use proxies if you do not have a particular expansion readily available to you.

If you have any questions regarding this geeklist, just ask!

I'm not sure how long this will go on, but I hope you enjoy it while it lasts. And I'll try to hand out some randomly along the way for those participating.

Thanks for stopping by, and I hope you see you post your results soon.

Mo meeple

Example of what to post inside your spoiler box:

8 = Farmer
9 = Fisherman
13 = Woodcutter
22 = Watchman

52 = Total, Excellent

For this game, I focused my attention better on those Woodcutters scoring two of them for 13. I had one Fisherman for 9, one Farmer for 8, and a solid 22 for my three Watchmen.

PBF #2

Rules: Base Game
Variants: Diagonal, Ferryman
Expansions: None
Additional Info: None

Comments: I decided to post two plays today as I’m curious to know your thoughts on these extra rules. Both of them will incorporate variants as listed in the Base game rulebook – Diagonal placement and the Ferryman. Please review these rules from the rulebook, but basically, the Diagonal rule allows you to play cards on the diagonal as well as orthogonally adjacent. And the Ferryman rule allows you to use a Fisherman as a “carrier” for other meeples to move them to territories further away.

If you are able, I’d love to hear your thoughts on these two variants and their usefulness…or lack thereof. Feel free to play a game or two on your own to learn those rules before looking at these two PBF sessions. Or just dive right in! And as always, I’m so happy to have you join in on the fun. Thanks for playing!!

EDIT: I forgot to say the the variants are optional. If they come up in your play and want to use them, go for it. But if not, you may still play these sessions with just the Base game rules.

EDIT 03-Jun-17: Finally updated the rules for the Last Card to say "cover exactly four spaces." Not fields. See comments of this item for details.

PBF #4

Rules: Base Game
Variants: Diagonal, Ferryman, Ein letztes Kärtchen
Expansions: None
Additional Info: All Variants are optional.

Comments: I went with two plays again this week as it plays so quickly…I figured, why not?! For this session, I added in another variant, Ein letztes Kärtchen (or The Last Card). The rules can be found on the designer’s website under the Variants tab, but here they are as well:

Quote:
This variant adds one more round to the game. So you play 17 rounds.

You do not place the 17th card in the normal way, but you place it on top your landscape. It must cover exactly 4 spaces and can overlap 1 or more cards. It can not protrude outside the existing landscape.

If there are workers on the spaces where you place the card, these workers return to your stock.

After you have placed this 17th card, you can place or move a worker, just like you normally do.

As with the other variants, this is optional, but if you do use it, let us know what you think. I think it’s a pretty neat idea. Overall, I like it but wish it could be used to cover any four-space territory…although maybe that would make it too powerful, not sure.

Anyway, have fun!

PBF #6

Rules: Base Game
Variants: Diagonal, Ferryman
Expansions: Der Leuchtturm
Additional Info: All Variants are optional.

Comments: This week, we’ve got an expansion in the mix, Der Leuchtturm (The Lighthouse). Again, if you don’t own it, you can print it out from the BGG page. Or just use a proxy of your own making. A simple square piece of paper is fine; just write the word Water on it three times and Lighthouse in the fourth quadrant. Or use the back of one of the other color’s cards with three blue cubes and one brown one. Whatever you want is fine.

The rules can be found on the designer’s website, but here they are as well:

Quote:
When you draw card number 24, you do not draw a new card in the next round. Instead, you take the Lighthouse and add it to your landscape.

Add the Lighthouse to your landscape just like you would add any other card. If you place or move a worker onto the Lighthouse, this is the lighthouse keeper.

Continue playing until the game ends. If card number 24 is the last card drawn – or does not get drawn at all – the Lighthouse does not come into play.

Scoring: At the end of the game, the lighthouse keeper receives 1 point for every water field that has a direct connection to the Lighthouse.

There is a nice illustration on the BGG page or at the designer’s website showing an example of scoring if you are unsure. Basically whatever water spaces you can trace back to the Lighthouse through more water (you may have more than one waterway), you score a point for each one.

The rub is that you don’t know if the Lighthouse will come out during the game. So, with that in mind, I did play twice again. Hopefully, at least one of them will have the Lighthouse make an appearance. You’ll just have to play them to find out. Enjoy!

PBF #8

Rules: Base Game
Variants: Diagonal, Ferryman
Expansions: Startcards Set A
Additional Info: All Variants are optional.

Comments: Two more PBFs for this week, my friends. Both will use the Startcards expansion. Normally, in the multiplayer game, everyone would randomly choose one to begin the game. For these two PBFs, we will all start with the same one. You must play this card as your first one of the tableau, but just as with any other card it may be rotated in any direction and end the game anywhere within the tableau.

And like the Lighthouse expansion, if you do not own the Startcards, just use any proxy of choosing. Either use a square piece of paper, and write the four terrains on the card. Or use the back of one of the unused cards and mark the four areas with a colored cube or other marker so you know which terrain is in each quadrant.

Here are the four terrains in clockwise order:
Startcard A1 = Field, Forest, Water, Watchtower

As you can see, all four terrains appear on this Startcard...actually, all six Startcards have a different arrangement of all four terrains. This is unlike all of the base game cards where only two or three of the terrain types appear. Let me know what you think!

The first PBF this week will only use the "usual" Diagonal and Ferryman variants, but the second one will include all things we've encountered thus far...well, hopefully, as you never know if the Lighthouse will actually make it into the game or not. You'll just have to play PBF #9 to find out.

Good luck!!

The first PBF this week will only use the "usual" Diagonal and Ferryman variants, but the second one will include all things we've encountered thus far...well, hopefully, as you never know if the Lighthouse will actually make it into the game or not. You'll just have to play PBF #9 to find out.

Good luck!!

PBF #10

Rules: Base Game
Variants: Diagonal, Ferryman
Expansions: Startcards Set A (see Comments for special rules!)
Additional Info: All Variants are optional.

Comments: We're just going to have one PBF this week since it's a holiday weekend here in the States, and I decided to do something a little different.

For this PBF, we will use two Startcards. These will be the first two cards played, and they must be placed diagonal to each other and remain in the center of the tableau. You may rotate them however you wish, but they must end the game as two of the center four cards. This will most likely limit your scoring opportunities in the long run, but I thought it would be fun to see who handles these limits the best.

Again, the two Startcards can be played in any orientation, but they must be diagonal to each other and remain in the center of the tableau. This is what your final tableau should look like with the two Startcards represented by the "X" in the diagram:

O O O O O O O O

O X O O or O O X O

O O X O O X O O

O O O O O O O O

And in case you do not own the Startcards, here are the terrains in clockwise order for each one. Just use a proxy of your own making to play this PBF:

Startcard A4 = Field, Forest, Watchtower, Water
Startcard A5 = Field, Water, Forest, Watchtower

Finally, I think the next set of PBFs will be a good time to switch to the Pro Rules. Feel free to check them out ahead of time and get in some practice, if you wish. The do appear to add to the "gameriness" of Limes by having your workers score in two ways each. I'll probably follow a similar pattern of starting with just the basic ruleset, then add variants and expansions with each new week. Should be interesting.

And I appreciate everyone who has played along so far. It's been a lot of fun!

PBF #11

Rules: Limes for Pros
Variants: Diagonal, Ferryman
Expansions: None
Additional Info: All Variants are optional.

Comments: Oh my, people! Oh. My. This week, we bring the Pro Rules to the PBF and what a new level these bring to the game. You’ll definitely need more brain power from this point forward. Not that the rules are complex, mind you, but every worker now scores in two ways. So, you’ll need to plan for two things with every worker and tile you place. Not so easy.

Originally, I was going to follow the original pattern of the PBF and have no extra variants to start, but I’m definitely glad I left them in. If you’re not using one or both in each of these plays, I’ll be very surprised if you score well. Placement of tiles and workers is that much more important now and being allowed to manipulate them during the game will be almost necessary.

I believe next week, we’ll keep it to just the Pro Rules again to help everyone get used to a new way of thinking. After that, we’ll start adding in the various expansions again to mix it up and see where it goes from there.

Thanks, as always, for playing!!

Comments: This week, we stay with the Pro Rules for scoring and no expansions or extra rules. I thought it would be a good idea to keep it “simple” again as we get used to the extra scoring methods. Next week, we’ll start adding in some of the extras we used when playing with the basic scoring.

Good luck this week! I had an Excellent and a Good….so, no consistency yet for me. Still working on it. And I’m enjoying the extra thinkiness of this scoring. Cool stuff.

Comments: We're back again for two more PBFs this week. I decided to go with the Startcards this time, as it adds the least amount of "overhead" compared to the other add-ons.

I have to admit, I still haven't figured out the best strategy of attack for the Pro Rules yet. I scored "Good" on both of my plays this week. This may be partially due to the Startcards but most likely more due to my play.

Look forward to seeing how you folks are doing with the new scoring rules in the coming weeks.

Expansions: None
Additional Info: All Variants are optional.

Comments: Alright, after a week off last weekend, I've got two more PBFs for you. Both of these will use the variant, Ein letztes Kärtchen (or the Last Card). The rules can be found further up the geeklist if you don't remember how it works.

I ended up with two wide ranging scores, so I hope you guys will fare better. I thought the first session was going well until about the mid-game. Then I knew I was in trouble. The second game felt good all the way. The plan was coming together nicely. But I still fell shy of that "excellent" score.

Good luck to all!!

PBF #19

Rules: Limes for Pros
Variants: Diagonal, Ferryman
Expansions: Limes: Der Leuchtturm
Additional Info: All Variants are optional.

Comments: A little late with this week's PBFs, but I had a busy weekend. Although, activity around here has slowed way down in recent weeks. No worries, though. I figured that would happen at some point. I still plan to post for a few more weeks to round out the Pro Rules set of PBFs. Plus, I'd be playing the game anyway, so if someone wants to give these a go in a few months or next year, they (and I) will be here when that time comes.

Anyway, all that's neither here nor there. For these two, we're back to using the Lighthouse expansion, or Der Leuchtturm. As a quick reminder, if Card #24 is drawn, the very next card played must be the Lighthouse. Feel free to us any proxy you wish if you do not have a copy of the card. But because it is only played after Card #24, you don't know if/when it will come up.

So I had one really good play and one not so good this week. I still can't seem to get a consistent score going using the Pro Rules. Can't tell if it's just the nature of this ruleset or if I'm overthinking the game when using them.

Yeah, it's probably me. I look forward to seeing some other posts for these somewhere down the line. Good luck with them!

PBF #20

PBF #21

Rules: Limes for Pros
Variants: Diagonal, Ferryman, Ein letztes Kärtchen
Expansions: Limes: Der Leuchtturm
Additional Info: All Variants are optional.

Comments: Hello, All! Two more PBFs this week. I decided to throw a couple of things in this time. We are using both the Last Card variant and the Lighthouse expansion. I was going to use a Startcard too but changed my mind at the last minute. Maybe next week, one or two will find their way into the PBF.

I still couldn't get to the higher score levels with these two, despite the seemingly good card draw of the first few tiles. Hopefully, some of you will be able to take advantage of them. I felt like I had a good plan in the early game but lost my way each time and couldn't quite get it done in the end.

I look forward to hearing your thoughts on these whenever you get to them. Take care! And good luck.

PBF #23

Rules: Base Game
Variants: Die Bierdeckelknobelei
Expansions: None
Additional Info: See rules below!

Comments: After searching the depths of BGG, I came across this early promo for the game. It's a small set of tiles printed on beer coasters (I don't know German, but I believe that's what the game's name translates to.) I had checked with the designer regarding the rules, and he said to just play it like basic Limes but with less tiles. I tried that...and didn't really enjoy it.

However, I found a review of this promo out there on the wilds of the internet, and through the magic of Google's translation, I discovered either the original intention of the promo or someone's version of it. It sounded more interesting, so I put my own rules together based upon that translation and present them to you fine folks here as PBF #23. I hope you enjoy it.

Rules:

1. Make a deck of only the following cards: 4, 5, 6, 7, 10, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 18, 22.

2. You will need four workers.

3. You will need a timer or stopwatch of some form.

4. Basic rules will be used for scoring.

5. Shuffle the twelve card deck and discard three without looking at them.

6. Set the timer for 5 minutes. When you're ready to play, hit start.

7. Flip over all nine cards at once. You have five minutes to make the best scoring arrangement that you can within a 3x3 grid.
• You may place and move tiles as many times as you wish.
• You may place and move workers as many times as you wish.
• You do not need to worry about any of the normal placement rules we typically use (diagonal, Ferryman, etc).
• The moment the timer goes off, you must immediately stop play. If you have an incomplete grid or are missing a worker or forgot to move one of your workers...oh well! You're stuck with what you've got in front of you.

So this is basically a timed optimization puzzle. I would recommend you have a paper and pencil handy to write down your configurations as you make them. This way, when you realize the first one was the best scoring, you remember what order the tiles were in. I played twice so far and found it quite fun.

The first game, I made three solid arrangements and decided to use the second. However, it was right before the timer was to go off. I was able to rearrange the cards, but one of my workers got left in the wrong area when that buzzer went off, hurting my final score. The second game, I only focused on two setups for the cards and found that worked well.

I'm not sure this has a lot of replay in it as there should be a best way to place the cards. But with three cards not used each time, and the pressure of the timer (which you may feel free to lower for an additional challenge), I think it's definitely a fun variant to play on occasion. After only two plays, I think this would be how to score yourself:

0-20 Needs Improvement
21-23 Okay
24-26 Good
27-29 Very Good
30+ Excellent

These are subject to change as more of you play and give feedback.

I'm leaving this as a single entry, but feel free to play as many times as you like.

Let me know what you think!
Thanks.
