As mentioned last month: This is (at least for me) a classical case of "graphic matters".

When this game has been released, I didn't care too much, since I don't like the original artwork.

Last month, however,

pointed out the rethemes of this game - and they surely do look great.
So, looking up the rules, I discovered a damn neat and very demanding solitaire game, that keeps on challenging me ..

So, if you are looking for a good solitaire game (coming with the bonus of being quick to craft), go for this pearl!

It's worth it!

Yay! I'm near the top!

This weekend I've been working on Neolithic Ops thanks to the recommendations from last month's thread.

Everything was printed on regular printer paper. I've added 2 things to my crafting arsenal - spray glue and Rustoleum Crystal Clear Craft Enamel. My previous adhesive of choice is double stick tape. It's easy to apply, precise, non toxic and great for archival quality. This makes it excellent for card making but not practical or cost effective for wider coverage especially when making loads of tiny tokens. It's also time intensive. My previous preservation method of choice is clear cover film (clear adhesive vinyl, cold laminate, clear contact etc.). It's easy enough to apply when you know how (I've covered a lot of schoolbooks in my time), protects against pretty much anything including liquids and seems to make the colours of the prints POP. It wasn't becoming cost effective to cover lots of large surfaces and it can be time intensive to apply so you don't get the air bubbles.

Thoughts - The spray glue is a keeper. I wish I'd invested in it before but I was really only making small games and card games. It covers a wide area quickly and gives great results. The drawback is that it can sometimes go EVERYwhere - I have the 'silly string' type, not the 'mist' type - so application is imprecise, and I also have no idea about archival quality. Results from the craft spray were "Meh". It covers quickly but I'm not sure how much it protects. I can tell it has coated effectively but the paper still feels 'papery' and when I cut the tokens I got a couple bits of toner that chipped off a few of them. That doesn't scream "Protection!" to me, so when the can runs out I won't get another. The colours also don't seem to POP using this method so that's a shame.

Player Mats - double stick taped to cereal box, finished off with craft spray.

Player Tokens, Berry Tokens, Board Hexes - spray glued to cardboard, finished off with craft spray.

Glacier - traced one of the single hexes onto old copy paper box which is white on one side, then cut it out, glued foam packing peanuts to the hex with white glue, included snippets from the provided glacier and finished off with craft spray.

Chicken variant cards - double stick taped to playing cards and sleeved.

Main game mini cards - waiting for Divine Intervention. Has anybody done a nice set for themselves and want to help me out by sending it to Artscow? Otherwise, I wait until Inspiration strikes.

Exploration Tiles, Berry Bush Markers - I need to reprint this page owing to a spray glue mishap but I want to print a bit bigger anyway so I can get the berry bush markers about 1" to fit my circle punch. This bit and the cards are all that's left really. I also have the pages printed out for the stand ups but not sure if I'll be making them yet.

Update 4th June

All of the game is complete except for the cards. The wonderful Garry Rice

has given me access to his Printer Studio files and I will definitely place an order. (FYI, Artscow wouldn't be best for this one because the deck size is irregular and they only seem to do 54 card decks).
I'm stalling a bit to see if a) a handy coupon pops up, or b) I see some cards for a game on here that I want to add to my order ninja Now, has anybody done the Ticket to Ride Christmas at the North Pole cards through PS? whistle

Exploration tiles - spray glued to cardboard, finished off with craft spray. I don't know if you can tell but the back of the box I used (I think the supermarket had batch cereal boxes in it) has some sort of wheat/grass motif. Very thematic!

Berry Bush Markers - printed them larger to about 1 inch, spray glued to cereal box, cut out with punch, white glued 2 other circles of punched box (I keep a supply that's ready punched) to them grey side out...and voila! Look ma, almost like punchboard tokens! Finished off with craft spray.

Box - I've gotten a new box off work, posted on the label which has been covered in clear film, and all the stuff is stored in there for now. I'm debating whether to make an insert or not. I'll see how things go. This is PnP #27, and it's going to be my last game crafting for a bit so I have time on my hands.

I've been looking at this on the list for a couple of months and finally succumbed to its siren call. I'll be building the Catanesque version in the next few days.

EDIT

Printing finished last weekend, dice arrived Wednesday, played since then. Photographed yesterday.

I really like this, I haven't won yet but it's not going to beat me

This is one of the entrants in this competition that has caught my eye. It's a lot of cards, but comments from people who have already built it suggest it will be worth it.

Printed out v2.0 this morning. Will probably get to cut it up tomorrow. Had hoped to add some art to the files before printing but this started to be a bigger than anticipated task. I still plan to do it but at a more leisurely pace. I want to play the game and get a feel for what everything does before reskinning, if its needed.

I did my own redesign on the base game and expansion last summer and for some reason missed this expansion being announced around the same time. At the time getting a proper copy was very difficult so I made my own base and expansion with a redesign thrown in as I'm not keen on the original artwork. . Now Millionaires row has come along - I found its entry the other week and knew I needed to add it to my own version. My biggest criticism of the previous expansion is that is seems to unbalance the base game at times. This is reputed to rebalance things a bit.

I saw quite a lot of copies of the base and expansion of original version at the UK games expo this weekend, on shelves and being played. It's a great game but I still don't like the graphic style of the original version. I'm not much of an artist so I wouldn't claim mine is any better, but it does the job for me. I hope this next addition does the same.

Edit:
Finished the editing and uploading of the cards and placed my order this morning. As the post might not get them here for a couple of weeks or more here is my first attempt at a photo montage in Photoshop. Merged the final images of 4 of the cards, added perspective and a background and impressed myself. Is there an easy way to automatically add shadows?

I wanted to try these maps but they aren't available for sale or in the market so I recreated them as best I could, which I'm pleased to say is better than expected. I still have some minor alignment errors to correct but that won't take too long. I'll also need to look at doing the stock/cube boards as they're non-standard.

I won't be putting up high res (printable) versions so please don't ask.

cowcow.com has a "Pick 4 for $20 with free shipping" coupon on right now that remarkably covers the multi-purpose cards, meaning I can print the cards for the base game and the first expansion for $20 delivered to my door, as opposed to $28/deck + international shipping from China. It's like getting them for free provided I pay shipping. I've been waiting a long time for a good sale on these - previously they've only been 25% off with free shipping, which is still pretty expensive.

I received the files for the Prelude deck a couple of weeks back, a surprise "Thank You" to backers of the Deck One Kickstarter and apology for production delays.

This one is a mere 25 cards, three of them still with placeholder art, but I have rarely been so excited to craft and play a game. Unlike the larger decks, which I only explore organically through play, with the Prelude I read every card to get a sense of the story and interaction, and the result is astounding. It's like the ultimate tutorial, with no Enemies and no way lose, just tons of ways to explore the system and the world until a player is comfortable enough to start playing "for real".

Going to be playing both the Prelude and The Highlands (Deck One) plenty this summer. Who knows, I might even print and play The Forest (Deck Two) if I ever discover all the secrets of The Highlands . . .

Probably silly to mention it here at this point, but a couple weeks ago my son and I came up with an idea for a game, and we're starting to implement it:

We have both played the Android game Zombie Road Trip, and the browser game Earn to Die. We also get a kick out of the occasional game of Thunder Road (he's still a bit young to be watching the Mad Max stuff, but some of those idea probably fueled this monster too). I dunno which of us said it out loud first, but we've both been thinking a mash-up board game of these ideas would be a pretty cool thing. Yeah yeah yeah, we know there's about a zillion "zombie" games already, and about 2.5 million added to the data base each day, but... this is a Zombie-pocalypse Car Driving Game!

What we've come up with so far is card-based. Each turn you equip your vehicle (starting with a little thing that's a few wheels, a gas tank, and a seat), and try to go as far as you can down a road filled with zombies, wrecks, hazards, and loot (including the occasional obligatory overturned Twinkies truck) - this is a series of cards that are flipped over and dealt with, one-by-one. When you run out of ammo, or gas, or armor, it's back to base, retrofit, upgrade, and try again.

We've had one play-test so far, and it went extremely well for a spur-of-the-moment idea, and a few pencil scratchings on 3x5 cards. We've done a bit of revising, and will do a second attempt pretty soon.

For now we're calling this thing "Zombie Road", but there must be a better name...

We dunno if this'll go anywhere, but if it does, you heard it here first!

zombie zombie zombie

Edit: here's an early (crude) draft for the start vehicle.
Yup, those are slots for cubes and a meeple.

I made my own PnP version of this called "Forest & Haldor" from business card stock and some card stock.

Also made a version of Ticket to Ride: The Dice Expansion with some Yahtzee Jr dice and old gamewright cards. I think this will be a good way to ease the kids into the the TTR goodness.

Nothing to craft, just pencil & paper. I used pieces for miners and the worm to avoid having to erase and redraw them each turn.

The game is really fun and can be pretty hard if you are surrounded by slime.

I ended up saving 4 of the miners, one of them was stuck in the worm's belly and the last one in the limbos.

This is by far the largest PnP attempt I've ever made. While I realize everyone else here is much more of a pro, humbly I present my work so far. I used a laminator to laminate pretty much everything in the game, the card back actually have construction paper to differentiate the different decks. I still have to figure out what to do about the tokens for the ingredients but I'm leaning towards using colored beads that I have from other projects. Can't wait to try this game out and see how well the PnP version fares during gameplay.

OK, finished my build of 1889 that I started last month.

As you may be able to see I had a little trouble with the board edges... but I decided for now I don't care quite enough to spend a bunch of time tweaking it...

I'd been planning to redo this mini expansion in english for well over a year and finally got around to it thanks to IB&C doing away with plot cards in The Resistance which gave me the motivation I needed.

These were only ever released in a Polish magazine and were for their version of the game which I understand features a different setting. Initially I planned to change the art but
i) it wasn't worth the effort and,
ii) it adds a nice subcity/underclass vibe to the clean futurist core cards.
I did however enlarge the bottom left corner icon and changed the card background to white to match the first edition plot cards. As always matching the font was the hardest and I didn't find the exact font but I got fairly close.

I used Google translate as well as the various translations others had provided to come up with the wording. It's a bit difficult translating idioms, matching the original writing style and keeping the meaning clear all at the same time. I have a new found appreciation for work translators do.

Added the additional content (loot deck, the "Where did he go?" card for each guard deck, a few additional tool and event cards, and the new character tiles with an A or B ability (each character has two abilities - you choose which one you want to play with)). Looking forward to playing it with all of them as I think it will really add to the game...having guards disappear and reappear unexpectedly sounds like good fun, and having to carry the loot and it's consequences from each safe sounds fun too...the Persian cat sounds annoying like a cat, as it jumps down from your arms and moves a couple spaces away at the end of each turn that you are carrying it, so you have to chase it and pick it back up
