South Dublin Boardgamers is a friendly group of multinational gamers that meet in family homes in the Dundrum/Blackrock area. We play a wide range of games with the emphasis on fun.

Our web site is: http://www.bigtent.com/groups/sdboardgamer

You'll also find out more about us on this thread: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/181829/item/3565937#it...

You can email us at: SouthDublinBoardgamers@yahoo.com

Here's what we've been playing recently.

June 2015
A busy month, during which I, the chronicler, was actually almost entirely absent due to work commitments and a little away time. Thankfully, our members posted some lively reports on our forums about what happened at many of the sessions, so there's some detail all the same.

Most Plays: Too Many Ties

Several of the shorter games were played pretty much equally across the month, making it impossible to completely say for sure what got most plays. This isn't even taking into account multiple plays on a given evening, but distinct appearances at game sessions. What can you do? Filler games get played a lot, and we have a lot of them. All of these games wracked up more or less the same number of reported appearances in June across the various meets reported on our forum.

Shadow Throne
Love Letter
One Night Ultimate Werewolf
Lords of Waterdeep

Epic of the Month: Winner

You can't stop the signal. New converts were made in June to the 'I'd like to try that again' club, including that one guy (there's always at least one) who spent the game either watching his crew get barbecued by Reavers or sitting in an Alliance holding cell. No, it's not your most complex and deep of games, but it plays very well, particularly when it gets people into the mood for goofy one-liners, which the theme invites. The new players were thinking and talking afterwards about what they might have done 'if only', and that's what you want, deep or no.

Conclave 9 - Limerick, June 2015

After our successful expedition to faraway Limerick (about 100 miles) for Knavecon, a few intrepid members considered The Conclave, held in Thomond Park, the Munster Rugby stadium. That's like holding a games con in a Football Stadium, folks. That's some kind of blasphemy, right? Anyway, in the end, only one member made the journey, and enjoyed the following:

Hannibal: Rome vs. Carthage
Love Letter
Lords of Waterdeep

Clearly Hannibal took the bulk of the day, a game that does get some table time and can be found in a couple of different collections in the group. The Conclave play was against a regular opponent, but had to be abandoned when they left the event with Hannibal beginning to take Italy, but much yet to be decided.

Family Plays in June

SDBG is partially defined by the fact that many of us have families and we game in our family homes, and though sometimes our 'future gamers' will take part in games with the regular crew, a great deal of in-family gaming goes on every day. We honour and respect this (some of the up-and-comers are cannier and quicker than any of the elders), and some kids' games get played on the big tables with no excuse, but we record the family activity in its own sub-list. This was what was played in June.

Splendor
Star Realms
Pokémon Trading Card Game
Love Letter
Merchants & Marauders
Commands & Colors: Ancients
Rat-a-Tat Cat
Unnamed Object
Camel Up
Eight-Minute Empire
Dominion
Quoridor
Pass the Pigs
Mr. Jack
BattleLore
Among the Stars
Love Letter: Batman
Spyfall
One Night Ultimate Werewolf
Lost Valley of the Dinosaurs
Nada!
Forbidden Island
Agricola
Smash Up
Lords of Waterdeep
Axis & Allies: Total War
Qwixx
Snowdonia
Legacy: The Testament of Duke de Crecy

Continuing to hit the tables six months on, this one looks like being safely in general rotation now. It hasn't spread beyond the one purchase in the group, and it does tend to be much the same mix around the table, but it's a regular game nonetheless. With the rules fix, it definitely has more balance.

Something definitely odd is happening with this game. It continues to generate female terrorist moles for some reason. Anyway, this stripped-down crisis deck from BSG game is clicking happily away month on month in SDBG and seems to have a happy home now. It had a couple of plays in June, and did result in some gender variance in the mole role.

The evangelism with which this game was initially received has quelled over time. Several copies are in circulation, and in fact in June a new copy prompted the purchasers to attend services at the church of the resident SDBG grand master. Afterward some home plays duly followed and were logged on our forums, so it seems the message is spreading once again.

New to the tables, and wracking up several games across the month, seemingly as a filler. I haven't played it, so I can't say for sure what it's all about, but it's been played consistently.

This game continues to divide opinion, but gets a pretty good amount of table time. The expansion still hasn't broken through, but there's plenty going on in the base game, and lots of permutations to explore out of the box. The June session saw a Mermaid romp to victory as some newer players still got to grips with the system.

This is one of our more reliable five player games, with or without the various expansions. I still haven't tried the Henry V version, but it did get table time in June, with its scary tower for punishing knights that don't want to go to France.

Good to see this back on the tables. It has been kind of pushed to the side by stripped-down bluffing games like The Resistance and One Night Ultimate Werewolf, and, more recently, by Homeland, which really takes the crisis system and makes a game out of it by itself. Still, the big game is a reliable theme experience, particularly with five players. The June game was played with four and a mutineer mixed in, and deemed not as satisfying. It also saw a human win, incidentally.

This game hit as a solid regular at group gatherings last year, and has strangely found a niche as a solo experience of late. It's designed that way, of course, and seems to offer a satisfying challenge, though the AI can be unpredictable. The June plays were mostly solo, I believe. I hear 70 is the score to beat.

The flash-flood of purchases seems to have abated, but the steady stream of plays goes on for this reliable starter game. There is a resident champion, though, and the question becomes as much how to thwart his system as to come up with alternatives. The game gets family play and group play pretty regularly either way.

This is a nice little game which lives among us pretty heavily expanded, which is a good thing. It has a nice thematic quality with a reasonable balance of planning and luck, certainly enough for the length it runs. It's a good one for a session with multiple games in the one sitting.

Quarriors was the first of these to hit a few years back, and though it still has fans, the mechanic and theme has moved on, meaning you have your choice of dice-chuckers these days. It's still filler game territory, and of course there's a massive risk of shiny object overload, but games are being played and folks are having fun, so what's not to love?

I was supposed to attend the session where this was played this month, but didn't in the end. Ironically, I ended up in Rome later in the month, staring at the actual Trajan market... It's reportedly a heavy euro with a lot of options that resulted in a comfortable winner in the June session. More to be explored, it seems.

This one first hit earlier in the year at one of the College cons, and did get a couple of plays before going quiet. It returned with a new owner in June, taking on a solo play and not finding himself particularly impressed. He reported finding it more fiddly than fun, but also willing to try again with different combinations of characters to see how it goes.
