There are so many people who do wonderfully kind things here on BGG - giving away games, buying a geek an avatar, donating to the Jack Vasel Memorial Fund, flying across the country to help a fellow geek, and the list goes on and on. It's easy to say "Wow, that person is so generous" and move on, as if that is a trait only given to a few. Yet, we can each be generous on our own terms in our own way.

Here, I am challenging myself and any of you that wish to join me to a week long challenge of small (or large) acts of kindness and generosity. Each day, I will intentionally do something kind this week. Join me?

Some small ideas to get us started:
Send a card or postcard to an elderly relative.
Give a larger GG tip than you normally would.
Buy a coworker a cup of coffee.
Donate to charity.
Let someone go in front of you in line.
Give your significant other a massage.
Call your mom or dad, tell her that you love her, and don't rush off the phone.

NOTE: Please feel free to join this challenge at any point. There is not magic time requirement to being kind. You can even do a second week at some later point if you so desire.

Day 1, Sat, June 6: Purchased something for my mom on Amazon. She had given me a gift card there that she got for a survey to use as I please, so I did some research and got her something back with it. Cost me nothing but a bit of time.

Day 2, Sun, June 7: I thought my act of kindness would be to buy lunch for one of the homeless people we usually see after church. However, they weren't there. However, I think that doing this made me already a bit open to ways to be kind. I gave Jenn a short head massage this morning after her shower, offered my seat on the bus to someone limping, and helped someone carry a bag down the block so that they could get out of the crowd. My official one for today, though, was giving Jenn a short foot massage this afternoon.

Day 3, Mon, June 8: Mondays are apparently hard for acts of kindness. But I made myself sit down to look for photos for a present for someone. I'm really glad I did, since it brought back some fantastic memories. Plus, I also found some really beautiful photographs I took. Also? I was darn cute when Jenn first met me!

Day 4, Tues, June 9: I talked the catering lady into leaving us the snacks from the previous meeting instead of throwing them out. Then I carried the leftovers back the two blocks to our department.
(Somehow this one feels a bit like cheating, since I also had one of the snacks. But I could have just taken it for me and not worried about others.)

Day 5, Wed, June 10: I gave my backup pedometer to a coworker for work's summer walking challenge. I also tried to treat our admin to yummy ice cream, but she insisted on buying her own.

Day 6, Thurs, June 11: I got out of bed 30 minutes early to cut Jenn's hair this morning.

Day 7, Fri, June 12: I gave the better seat to Jenn, despite kinda really wanting to keep it myself.

I'm glad I did this week. It was easier in some ways and harder in others than I thought. I had hoped to do more things out of my norm, but maybe that's not the point. I may try again in a couple weeks.

Lovely idea. It's going to be a busy week, so I may not be able to update daily, but I'm going to do my best! I chose Patchwork because just the other day my mom took the time to sew a pretty new dice bag for me, just because she's nice.

Sunday: Didn't complain when we had to go BACK to the hardware store because the enormous piece of wood we bought was the wrong size. (I was really annoyed, but stayed positive so my husband wouldn't have to deal with my grumpiness. )

Monday: Went and got a milkshake for the little girl whose house we are painting. She was very polite and offered to get us waters and iced tea. In the afternoon a milkshake sounded good and she was very happy to get one too.

Tuesday: Bought lunch for my parents. We had sandwiches. They were delicious. One of the major benefits to living in town is we get to spend a lot of time together.

Wednesday: Took a Dr Pepper with extra ice to my assistant principal. We've had a TON of changes come to our school and I'm really grateful that he's sticking around and keeping things together.

Thursday: Helped my best friend and her husband load up their moving truck. Sad to see them go. Wish they'd moved in the winter and not 100% humidity. Haha.

Friday: Helped my dad clean up their house before a dinner party just because I was over there hanging out already.

This is a lovely idea, Rose! Let's see how much simple goodness we can bring into the world.

Day 1 June 6 2015 - Put together and mailed a "get well" box of homemade goodies for my elderly aunt who just got home from heart surgery. Included some items that will help my uncle (who will be taking over the cooking chores while she recovers) make some quick but tasty meals.

Day 2 June 7 2015 - When a precariously placed item that I had warned my husband about finally took a tumble and made a big mess when it hit other things, I held my tongue instead of saying an "I told you so" and cleaned up the mess. Later in the day while my hubby was out working on priming the garage, I bought him out a big cup of ice and a bottle of cane sugar Coca-Cola (he had his big bottle of water already but I thought an ice cold Coke might be a refreshing change.)

Day 3 - June 8, 2015 Contributed to the Geeks Doing Good 2015 fundraiser campaign on Indiegogo. It's run by Worldbuilders, a charity started by author Pathrick Rothfuss and they donate the money collected to Heifer International. It makes me happy knowing that the money I'm giving will help people become self-sufficient and maybe even allow them to pay it forward to someone else in their village.

Day 4 - June 9, 2015 Ended up with a wicked sinus headache and we had something to do after the hubby got home from work, so I thought I probably wasn't going to get anything accomplished today. We went out for supper and as we were heading out to the car when done, I noticed a pile of several bills of cash on the ground. Since I was carrying the leftovers, I had him pick it up and look. It was $60! So he went back into the restaurant and gave the money to the hostess with an explanation of where in the lot it was found. They were totally impressed that we turned in the money, but that's just how we were raised. So despite this evil headache, I managed to do something good at least.

Day 5 - June 10, 2015 Finally got off my butt and got a Get Well card and cheery letter prepped for sending to Meerkat. Had some fun with Photoshop (actually GIMP) and a card program for making the card. It'll be winging its way to her tomorrow morning once the hubby mails it.

Day 6 - June 11, 2015 A friend at the CSA farm we have our share from offered us some excess "lunchbox pepper" (those tiny sweet colorful mini bell peppers ) transplants since they had more than was needed. We'd picked up a bunch of them Wednesday night and today I offered some of them to my parents. Once I see my next door neighbor, I am going to offer some to her too. I hate to see homeless plants and those peppers are awesome so I'm spreading the joy.

Day 7 - June 12, 2015 The above mentioned friend at the CSA farm has an obsession with bacon, so when during our travels I spied a bottle of Bacon Chipotle BBQ sauce, we bought it for her. Today, the first day of the summer CSA, we brought it to give to her as a surprise. She was totally psyched and we stood around chatting about all the things she wanted to try it on. It seemed to really brighten her day.

I really REALLY enjoyed this week, Rose! It was fun thinking of others and seeing how happy it made them. I hope to keep trying to do this as much as possible. Thank you so much for starting the ball rolling. By doing so, you've multiplied kindness many times over! *hug*

Alright, I'll join.

Saturday (6/6) I was at a board game party pretty much all day - so I couldn't post then, but I can now.

6/6 - Helped clean up a spill when a child knocked over a jar of pickles at the party. I was first on the scene and reacted fast - grabbing the rolling jar and hunting down towels. Later and grabbed a bowl for the same child as her icecream sandwich melted (but before it could collapse on the game we were playing!) Later in the evening when my husband was super tired, I made tea - usually we trade off steps when making it, but I did it all to let him rest.

6/7 - Did all the dishes and cleaning before 8:00 am, before the temperature reaches 80+ degrees today! And so that my husband can take a bike ride and not need to worry about helping clean the apartment before we host a board game party this afternoon.

6/8 - This wasn't planned (I had another idea for what my little thing would be)... but I helped describe to someone in the RPG design forum how to make aged paper textures for their game, as well as provided a link to a site where they can download aged paper textures for free to use in games.

6/9 - I called my dad for our weekly chat. I was supposed to call him yesterday (Monday nights are usually our time to talk) but I was busy making dinner... and with a 3 hour time difference, by the time my dinner is done, he'll be in bed. He's coming out to visit us in August, which will be fun.

6/10 - Mailed the earrings I made by request for my sister, to my sister. I should have mailed them out last week, but I'll just come out and say that I'm lazy, and it's been so hot lately I didn't want to walk to the post office in the heat. But they are mailed now, woo! I can't wait to hear how she likes them once she really sees them (as opposed to just looking at the photograph.)

6/11 - Today I donated 1/4th of the clothes we have piled up to donate. I walked to the nearest clothes donation bin and placed them inside. This means I have three more trips until all the clothes we want to get rid of are gone - but it's a start! It also means more space in our closet for games!

6/12 - Today was a lazy day. I was very productive yesterday, so today I decided to relax. And I still got in some acts of kindness - and I'm not going to count the courteous advice I gave a potential designer in a train-wreck of a design thread... mostly today's acts of kindness revolve around food. I'm making mashed potatoes for my husband for dinner (his request) and he is very excited for them! And, for a surprise, I'm making cinnamon rolls for breakfast tomorrow. Usually I'm too lazy to make them ahead, which means waiting extra long for breakfast when we do have them, but this time I'm all prepared!

06/06: So for the next two weeks my parents, who are both 74, will be in the process of moving to Memphis. To save a "few" bucks, they are essentially moving themselves. I enjoy helping in these situations, knowing full well that they couldn't possibly do the heavy lifting between the two of them. So yesterday, my sister and I disassembled the bumper pool table and hauled it up from the basement and out to the garage. It was a beast.

06/07: Today, my brother-in-law and sister came by and helped me move the Hammond organ upstairs from the basement. And then the sleeper sofa. Did I mention that the stairs include a turn of about 150 deg? And then the monster of a leather couch and loveseat were removed from the main floor along with the dining room hutch. We did get some good food and margaritas for our efforts!

06/08: So today I offered to buy lunch for my two staff. They declined my offer because they didn't want to have lunch without me, so they took a rain check. Since that didn't quite work out, I simply told them how much I appreciate all of the hard work they do to make my day run smoothly.

06/09: Bought lunch for my staff. They really work hard and I don't tell them enough how much I appreciate what they do. ALSO, my brother recently competed in his local Scottish Highland Games and did really well (2nd in the caber toss). He's been trying to lose weight this year, so when I saw some pictures from the games, I complimented him on not only how well he performed, but how good he looks having lost nearly 40 lbs.

06/10: Sent a text to an estranged friend. We have our differences, but is it worth remaining out of touch?

06/11: One of my patients that came in to see me is 90 years old. She looks 70, and I told her it wasn't just how she appears, but the fact that she still wears a great smile.

06/12: Helped a friend out of a pickle before her missionary trip to Kenya. Hoping it's a safe trip for her.

06/13: Going with my brother-in-law to St. Louis to pick up some games. Picking him up in his car (my sister dropped it off to me) and filling the tank without his knowledge.

This is a fab idea thank you Rose. I tried to put this up yesterday, but failed, so here goes.

Had a weekend of no internet access, so here is s big update!

10/6/2015
I lent my shooting line tent (a pop up tent to hide you and your stuff in when in inevitably chucks it down) to the student club (who have their main competition this weekend, when it is supposed to be rather wet).

11/06/2015
I'm cat sitting for my friend (and was yesterday to) today I cleaned out their litter trays yuk bought them (more) toys to play with and stopped them squeezing through the gap in the balcony

12/06/2015
I helped someone on to the (right!) train with their luggage, let a panicked looking women infront of me at the ticket office queue and gave my friend some support on dealing with a mutual narcissistic bully we know, on what turned out to be a very, very delayed train. But hooray for awesome briefing weekend for Sri Lanka!

13/06/2015
I helped write some more training plans for when we are in Sri Lanka recruiting and training Guiders and I thought to get up and makes sure my friend's dishwasher was filled and run before the morning.

14/06/2015
We went to the park in our downtime, I helped my friend overcome her fear and go on the zip wire, and gave people a lift up to the bits they couldn't quite reach on the climbing frames.

15/06/2015
I bought a tin of dog food, sandwich and bottle of juice for a homeless guy and his dog. I've done that before but this time I wrote a wee note too (I'm still too cowardly to engage strangers in conversation

16/06/2015
I went to pick up some resuscitation manakins for Guides on Thursday so they can finish their first aid badge. And made dinner

17/06/2015
As a bonus today I am helping my friend get new sight marks after her arrow rest snapped.

It has been a lovely week, thank you for the excellent idea.

*incase anyone was worried I picked Pandemic because it is a co-op game and good deeds and happiness spread through the world
