A quick review of the Indy Con Ambassadors' day trip over to Columbus,OH and Origins 2015.

I had not made the trip to Origins since they moved the date from Late June/July 4th week to the first week of June. This ad nothing to do with protest and everything to do with when my Brother and his family came out to visit us each summer. They odds were ever in my favor this year so I put the word out to out local gaming group.

We left Indy right around 7:20 AM. And we entered the Buckeye State a little after 8:25. We were making pretty good time until we had to stop TWICE at rest stops.

After Christy was done mopping the floor with Denise in Summoner Wars. we broke out Category 5 aka 6 Takes on the Kindle.

I'm normally not a fan of games ported to electronic format, exception being Elder Sign. But this weekend was all about trying new things, even wearing chain-mail underwear.

I think more fun from our reactions as we tried to out screw each other by our card placement.

In the end I won due to my :chaos gaming" and placing the 104 card as my first play.

We rolled into town about 10:10 and we got lucky finding a parking spot after navigating the Parking Zone wasteland.

Origins is a will call or buy on site Con so I was a little nervous about how long we would have to wait.

I think we were in line for only 5 minutes. It took me about 10 minutes to get my badge do to a refund error. You heard that right. I was owed $18. I had no idea why. Turns out eh $20 board game ribbon I bought was returned to me because the $2 event ticket I bought caused a system error.

Huh

While we waited for Troy to go back to the car for his cell phone we hit the dealer hall....and it was nice and EMPTY, relatively speaking compared to GenCon. There was lots of demo space in all of the booths.

One of the first places we walked by was the foam weapons armory. I just had to seize on the opportunity to hit someone up side the head with a foam pipe.

After window shopping with the ladies we split up and I went back to Z Man.

I was interested in this one based on the theme. Artwork was great and the guy running the demo was awesome but this one is not for me. It left me blah

I almost missed this one because I keep forgetting that Greater Than Games (Dice Hate Me Games) & Greater Than Games (Sentinel Comics) are now the same company. There was no GtG banner.

It was odd playing a Co-Op that was not comic booked themed.

This one has potential. I really liked that each Spirit had something different to bring to the game.

I try not to but new games during Con Season without playing them first. It just makes sense. But I pre ordered this one a few weeks ago because I knew it would sell out before I got to Origins, it did on the first day.

There was not a copy for play in the Stronghold booth but I found a copy sitting out in the event hall. I was very lucky to walk by as a new game was just starting and they had one empty set left.

This is everything I hoped it would be. Instead of being card driven like Battlestar Galactica: The Board Game you choices are influenced by your dice rolls. It makes it that much ahrder to bluff your way during the game.

So glad this one is showing up in July.

I really like Spartacus: A Game of Blood & Treachery. I though cool Marvel plus Spartacus+mechanic = awesome. WRONG This had none of the fun of the original. No bidding on upgrades like weapons or shields. And thought they tried the special house powers really did bot fit in with the combat phase.

They game also felt cheap. Lots of cardboard. Yes there are four painted Clix Figures but they really don;t come into play until the end of the game.

After a quick lunch and getting hit upside the head with a copy of VivaJava: The Coffee Game: The Dice GameI met Troy back in the Hall for an event, Large King of New York. I was a little bumbed I was hoping for the huge standees that are 4 ft tall, but as I found out later that would be GIANT KoNY not Large.

I still had fun playing, we hit with a 2 energy card that really made the last have of the game interesting.

I like this version but it's not going to replace King of Tokyo ,and all of the expansions, in my collection.

After we were done with our event and after I RAN back to retrieve the bag for of games I left at our event we watched the start of Mayfair's new Trek game. We both went "blah" and headed over to the dealer hall. After we parted ways I went back to the event hall and scored a seat to try a demo. I should have gone with my first observation. This just felt like an attempt to ca$h in on the Trek name.

After we were done with the Hall we all met in the open gaming area. While the ladies played some new games I turned to Twitter to find a good place to eat. Hands down everyone said Barely's.

http://www.barleysbrewing.com/

I wasn't going to add this to the list I mean craft beer is craft beer but the sandwich I had kicked ass. The Hobbit's Delight. 1/4 lb all beef hot dog, covered in chili, beer cheese and topped with deep fried mac n cheese. Yes I survived.

The picture below isn't the best but whats shown is a 1/2 portion remaining as well as some GOOD Blood Thirst Wheat

After dinner my Plaid Hat Games fan gurl realized the delaer hall was open for 5 more minutes so we ran back in so she get asome autographs.

After we were escorted from the Hall we all gathered in the Rio Grande room and played some Concordia. I need to give it another play. Between sitting upside down and not hearing the rule on scoring with card multipliers I lost pretty badly.

There were some deals to be had but since I spent most of the day hauling around Elysium and what ever games Christy threw into my bag I really was no interested in haling any more dead weight.

I really wanted some Meeple Source stuff but its just so damn expensive for what you get. The Brain tokens would have been awesome for Zombie Dice but I would have paid more for the brains than I did for the actual game.

I did pick up these heart tokens for Love Letter. They only set me back $4. The Broken Token

The Coasters from Stronghold were Free

Final thoughts

Origins is the kid brother of summer Cons, it's the one the rest of the World ignores and that's OK. Lets keep it our little secret. IMO it's not worth getting a 4 day badge, a 1 day visit works just fine. You can see everything you want in the dealer hall in about 2 hours and then spend the rest of the day open gaming or doing events.

Next year, we are going back,I would like to get a room for Saturday night and just relax have some more Blood Wheat beer and play more games.

They say it's not what you play but who you play the game with. The same is true of road trip buddies. You guys weer a blast. Denise dropping the F Bomb made the ride home that much better.
