Kublacon is one of the larger California gaming conventions taking place in the San Francisco Bay Area over Memorial Day Weekend. Long ago, I used to live in the area and attended every year. I think I went to the first 5 of them dating back to when they were called Manafest.

I live in San Diego now, so heading up is quite an undertaking with work and family committments, but I enjoy it so much that I consider it my "One" weekend to be a little selfish and attend guilt-free. My wife is very understanding and frankly probably enjoys the time off laugh

My first game of the con was this Kickstarter game on Friday morning. It had recently successfully funded and one of the developers had set up a table in the atrium open play area to demo the game. I was walking by and was invited to join in. It is a pretty fun and fast card game where you try to score victory points by defeating monsters, while your opponents try to do the same. There is a lot of take this and take that where you try to boost your cards, and your opponents counter them just enough to have you fail your objective so they can pick up the easy points. We played a demo version, but I have to say that I was impressed with the card quality and art of the game. I may pick it up when it is ultimately released.

Flying in from San Diego, I didn't have an opportunity to bring a lot of games but I brought a few small ones in a box about 1/2 the size of a shoebox. Arboretum is one of the ones I brought with me. I love this little medium weight filler and played it 5 times over the weekend between heavier games or just whenever I had a spare moment and some willing players. I got in two 2-players, one 3-player and two 4-player games. It is great at all player counts.

My first real pick-up game of the con was on Friday. Walking by, I see the tell-tale orange flag of a game looking for players. This is one of my favorite games so I was happy to sit down a play a 4 player game. The pace was unusually aggressive and the map very tight with mountains dividing the board leading to a lot of blocking and heavy area control. Really enjoyable and competitive game.

This was my first play of this game even though I own it. I had just learned the rules, and did a short solo run a few days before the Con so I was happy to see a game looking for players. I gladly sat down for a session with two experienced players and one other rookie.

I don't know what I can add that hasn't already been said, but this is a really neat and well thought out game. Every part of the game seems to mesh together flawlessly. I really like the simultaneous rolling so everyone can start planning their moves. It really speeds up the play time.

I only wish there was at least some player interaction besides the first player turn track.

Even so, I definitely want to play again soon.

I got in a great session of Orleans with the 2 experienced players from my Burgundy game before. I was eager to try this out since I backed the recent Kickstarter based on some reviews I had read but had not played it. Really good game where you make a production engine, not with cards, but with tokens that you draw from a bag.

It took me a while to get into the mechanics of how the multiple scoring tracks work. I paid too much attention to that and essentially ignored the actual placement on the board so I ended up a distant third.

Good game and can't wait to get my copy.

I've been playing Shadowfist since it launched in the mid-90's and it the only CCG I still play. I played in two tournaments over the weekend. The first was the classic "Final Brawl" tournament on Friday where all cards ever printed are fair game. I won the classic format tournament on Saturday and was crowned CA champion. Yay me. I got a nice plaque, 15 KublaBucks and some promo cards.

I played in the modern format tournament on Sunday and got soundly spanked so there you go. LOL.

I love this game and wish I could find more local players in San Diego.

The Saturday highlight was getting to play my favorite game, Dune. Although it is my favorite game, it had been at least 15 years since I last played since I have only been back seriously into board games for a couple of years. I talked one of my friends from my college game group into coming to the convention to play this for old time's sake. I recruited 4 more friends prior to the con and set a play time. It was glorious. 4 hours of glorious where we only completed 10 out of 15 rounds and had to call the game because people had to leave. There were 3 new players which slowed played as they learned the rules and tried to grasp strategy. Everyone seemed to have fun but it did drag on. I played the Guild which is a faction I had never played before. Good times.

Sunday morning I tried out Dogs of War. Interesting game and my first play. You are mercenaries and assign your pieces to both sides of local battles to gain immediate and end game advantages. Your opponents are doing the same which results in a see-saw type of effect throughout the game. I thought it was ok, but I didn't find it to be very fun. The pieces and production were really nice though.

Afterwards, we got to try out Endeavor, which is a game that I had heard a lot about, but have never gotten to play since it is out of print and no one in my local group seems to have a copy.

I thought it was very good, and balanced. I tried to abuse the slavery cards and got suitably spanked when it was abolished soon afterwards which I thought was pretty thematic. Nice play of managing resources and area control.

We played this with 4 rookies and one experienced player (who owned the game). One rookie player won quite handily with lots of workers out auctioning the rest of us every round.

I hope this gets reprinted as I would love to own a copy.

This is another of the small games I brought with me. Meuterer (Mutineer) is one of the original role selection games along with a goods trading game. You sail around the ocean trying to sell goods at various ports while trying to maintain (or take!) control of the ship.

The Captain has to walk a very fine line to keep everyone scoring just enough points to keep them in check and but still maneuver to stay ahead points-wise. Inevitably, the line is crossed and there is a mutiny and someone else tries to take over. Really fun.

I taught it to 3 other players and had a blast.

I got into a pick up game of this on Sunday before one of my Shadowfist tournaments. It is a goofy Ameritrash type of game but it was decently fun. You essentially wander around the board, collecting components that you need to escape the scenario while trying to avoid the serial killer. The killer gets stronger as the game goes on so it gets tougher and tougher. The scenarios have multiple endings depending on what happens. It felt a pretty random but I had fun with it. I got murderized while trying to escape the scenario with one other player while leaving every one else behind. Serves me right, I suppose.

Got this one in around 11 pm on Sunday after my Shadowfist tournament. It is quick little card game where you play cards trying to build trains with various matching rail cards (color and/or number). There are some bonus cards that mix things up. It was light and enjoyable, although it felt a little like UNO, which I'll admit to enjoying.

Wrapped up Sunday night (really early Monday) with a game of Colosseum which I had reserved earlier from the lending library. We started playing at 1 am and didn't finish until 3am! Yow. Neither of us had ever played it before so we learned it as we went along. Luckily someone stopped to watch who had a lot of experience with the game and was able to answer our rules questions.

Really neat game where you compete for resources on the board and need to stage elaborate productions for the enjoyment of the Roman Colosseum crowd. You auction for groups of items like torches, poets, gladiators, lions, horses, cages, etc. to stage your productions.

There is also a board component where you can increase the size of your production area arena to encourage more fans and nobility to view your productions. You gain prestige and money to fund future productions with each show. It found it very thematic that you can repeat productions for money, but it won't increase your prestige which are your victory points. You have to decide when it time to leave the safely paying production to try something new. All that in a finite number of turns.

Really fun and beautiful looking game. Sadly out of print.

Another of the small games I brought with me. I'm a big Fleet fan and taught it to two others. Things were a little bleery after only a few hours of sleep, and I set up the deck incorrectly so the premium cards started showing up way too early. One of the players had bought an early Processing vessel and was able to out earn the both of us starting turn 2. The early auctions had 2 of the 3 licenses being premiums which the other two of us couldn't afford and the player with the Processing Vessel was always able to outbid us on the only affordable one available.

I didn't realize my mistake setting up the game until too late, and it ruined the game. Too bad since I think it is a great game.

My last game of the Con. I had a few hours to spare before having to catch a shuttle for my flight. I was taught this game about building the London Underground. It is essentially a pick up and deliver game where you try to design routes that encourage a very lazy commuter to use, which scores you points.

Very fun puzzle to solve, with some slight blocking, but not too in your face. We played 2-player which was fairly open, and I can see how blocking would be much more of a factor with more players. Sadly, another good game that is out of print. I enjoyed it enough that I may need to find a used copy somewhere.

After that, it was time to head home for a vacation from my vacation. I had another great time at this Con and got to play something like 25 games over the weekend, including two tournaments and the rare 6-player version of Dune along with several out of print games. I also was able to reconnect with some old friends that I don't see often enough and made a few new ones. Good times. I will definitely be back next year.
