There are probably a couple of dozen titles covering the Spanish Civil War in its entirety, and not a few are highly regarded: Javier Romero's The Spanish Civil War (GMT)and David Gómez Relloso's Crusade and Revolution (Compass Games) being two that spring to mind. The same can't be said for the representation of individual battles within this fascinating conflict. Few such titles spring to mind and if they do it is perhaps for the wrong reasons.

I've dredged the bottom of an obscurer barrel of wargaming and rustled up 15 titles depicting individual battles and offensives of the conflict. It seems inexplicable that such engagements lack gaming appeal, which leads one to the conclusion that they have been done poorly or that the confrontations are difficult to simulate. Many of these titles rate poorly and most are neglected. Is this cause and effect, or have I unearthed some hidden gems? Most of these titles lack forum posts, let alone reviews and session reports, so, with the exception of a couple of titles that look like dogs, it is hard to tell whether they are poor games or just lack appeal.

So here is a list of games on SCW battles and campaigns. Feel free to add to it, comment on it or elaborate on any of the titles if you have played them. Many could also use some love, even tough love. It's better than no love.

CTV: Santander 1937 is a simulation of the Italo-Nationalist offensive in Santander in August 1937, in which the Italian expeditionary corps (the C.T.V.) played a key role.

Interestingly, this antiquarian piece of wargaming has proven to be one of the higher rated amongst these titles. It covers the initial decisive campaign for Madrid as do a couple of others here.

I own it and spent too much on it. It is an intriguing puzzle of a game with its ZOC rules and stacking restrictions. Unfortunately, the game is dry and sports unspeakable artwork.

The title, which is a straightforward, classic wargame with hex maps, attempts to simulate four different campaigns of the Spanish Civil War: Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia and Teruel. Around 200 unmounted counters represent divisions (but actual scale changes between scenarios) and supporting elements (aircraft, artillery, and tanks).

Combat resolution is quite original, resulting in "damage counters" being inflicted on the target, up to the combat factor (whose value is function of troops quality), at which point capabilities decrease radically. Periodically, the right kind of replacements remove some of the damage, resulting in very durable units but fiddly stacks.

All other aspects of the game are quite classic, from movement to victory point based on geographical objectives.

This is a wargame, dedicated to a not well-covered historical event, with an original incremental losses mechanism with four pages of basic rules.

El Eco de los Pasos, recreates four campaigns of the Spanish Civil War:
Madrid (October 1936-March 1937),
Teruel (December 1937-February 1938),
Valencia (April-July 1938)
Barcelona (December 1938-February 1939)

Division-brigade level and 3-7 days per turn.
4 DIN A3 maps, 468 counters.

This one isn't obscure, but only because Perry Moore designed it. It seems to have its champions, but not enough to tempt my charitable side.
