My wife loves reading almost as much as I love gaming--almost. Last year, she embarked on a unique reading challenge which tasked her with reading 52 books in 52 weeks from a very specific list of criteria (http://www.popsugar.com/love/Reading-Challenge-2015-36071458). A few weeks ago, I realized many of the criteria could be applied to board games as well by simply changing the word "book" to "board game"! For example, 'a book with a number in the title' would become 'a board game with a number in the title'.

*Thus the 52 Game Challenge was born!*

I'll be tracking my progress as an item in this Geeklist. Feel free to add an item of your own featuring the best new game you played in 2015 and join me in my quest beginning January 1, 2016! (feel free to join later as well)

Note: some of the criteria were modified a bit from the original list to make them more applicable to board games. Also, while there are only 50 items in the list, #32 is "A game trilogy"--hence the 52 Game Challenge. Good luck!

1. A game that take 4+ hours to play
2. A classic game
3. A game that became a movie
4. A game published this year
5. A game with a number in the title
6. A game designed by someone under 30
7. A game with nonhuman characters
8. A funny game
9. A game by a female designer
10. A game with a mystery or thriller theme
11. A game with a one-word title
12. A game from a "system" (The Decktet, Looney Pyramids, etc.)
13. A game set in a different country
14. A game based on historical events
15. A popular designer's first game
16. A game from a designer you love that you haven't played yet
17. A game a friend recommended
18. A Spiel des Jahres winning game
19. A storytelling game
20. A game at the bottom of your to-play list
21. A game your mom loves
22. A game with a horror theme
23. A game more than 100 years old
24. A game based entirely on its cover
25. A game you hate that you've played at least once before
26. A game named after a person
27. A game you can finish in under 15 minutes
28. A game with antonyms in the title
29. A game set somewhere you've always wanted to visit
30. A game that came out the year you were born
31. A game with bad reviews
32. A game trilogy
33. A game from your childhood
34. A game with triangle-shaped components
35. A game set in the future
36. A game set in a school
37. A game with a color in the title
38. A game that made you cry/sad
39. A game with magic
40. A game illustrated by your favorite artist
41. A game by a designer you've never played before
42. A game you own but have never played
43. A game that takes place in your hometown (or as close as possible)
44. A game that was originally published in a different language
45. A game set during Christmas
46. A game designed by someone with your same initials
47. A game with 8+ players
48. A game with a controversial theme
49. A game based on or turned into a TV show
50. A game you started but never finished

A few clarifications:

1) The list may be completed in any order
2) The same game may not be used to satisfy multiple criteria
3) You do not need to fulfill exactly one category per week. You may play games at whatever pace you want, the goal being to complete the list by December 31, 2016

*The goal of the challenge is to provide a fun way to get people to play a wide variety of games, some of which may be outside their typical 'gaming comfort zone'. Feel free to modify the categories/bend the rules as necessary but don't immediately give up on the more 'difficult' categories. There are TONS of games out there--you might be surprised at what you can find!

I was going to do the 10x10 challenge next year, but this sounds more interesting. Not sure I can even find a game to fit a few of the categories though, e.g. set in my hometown, designer with my initials, which makes me sad. I hope creative alternatives will count.

1. A game that take 4+ hours to play - Sid Meier's Civilization: The Board Game, 23rd July
2. A classic game Scattergories, 30th April (Hope this counts: the game has been around forever, even if not in the Scattergories packaging)
3. A game with the same name as a movie - Revolution!, 2nd Feb
4. A game published this year - Unknown, 6th June (BGG lists this game as 2015, but I just got one of the first Kickstarted copies, so it definitely only came out this year)
5. A game with a number in the title - Red7 23rd July
6. A game designed by someone under 30 - Bohnanza, 9th September
7. A game with nonhuman characters - The Werewolves of Miller's Hollow, 8th April
8. A funny game - Snake Oil, 30th April
9. A game by a female designer - Marrying Mr. Darcy, April 14th
10. A game with a mystery or thriller theme - Spyfall, 7th April
11. A game with a one-word title - Therapy, 28th Feb
12. A game from a "system" - Durak, 1st May
13. A game set in a different country - Deception: Murder in Hong Kong, 6th May
14. A game based on historical events - The Grizzled, 16th Sept
15. A popular designer's first game - Dominion, 14th April
16. A game from a designer you love that you haven't played yet - The Castles of Burgundy, 14th June
17. A game a friend recommended - Concept, 29th April
18. A Spiel des Jahres winning game - Hanabi, March 1st
19. A storytelling game - Erzähl doch mal..., 3rd June
20. A game at the bottom of your to-play list - Tiny Epic Galaxies, 13th May
21. A game your mom loved - Scrabble, Jan 2nd
22. A game with a horror theme - Dead of Winter: A Crossroads Game, Jan 2nd
23. A game more than 100 years old - Whist, 1st May
24. A game you decided to buy based on the box alone - Quelf , 3rd June (I changed the wording slightly on this, since I've NEVER bought a game based on the box art. This is the nearest I could get. Not into shiny things - Hey, one of my favourite games is Innovation )
25. A game you dislike that you've played at least once before - Antidote, 24th June (Disliked it even more this time!)
26. A game named after a person - Rorschach, 13th May
27. A game you can finish in under 15 minutes - Coup, 8th April
28. A game with antonyms in the title - Love 2 Hate: A Party Game for Inappropriate People, 25th December
29. A game set somewhere you've always wanted to visit - Monkeys on the Moon, 1st May
30. A game that came out the year you were born - Acquire, 6th May
31. A game with bad reviews - Balloon Cup, 27th May (Such an under-appreciated game. Play it with the published rules, NOT as the designer originally intended, and watch your opponent sweat as you force them to play to help you.)
32. A game trilogy - Battlestar Galactica: The Board Game, Battlestar Galactica: The Board Game – Pegasus Expansion, Battlestar Galactica: The Board Game – Exodus Expansion, base game 24th May, Pegasus 4th September, Exodus 30th December. (Yes, I know it's 3 of a series of 4, but good enough, right? It was a trilogy until the last expansion came out )
33. A game from your childhood - Monopoly, 30th September
34. A game with triangle-shaped components - Trivial Pursuit: Genus Edition, Jan 2nd
35. A game set in the future - Machine of Death, 7th May
36. A game set (partly) in a school - Tragedy Looper, 16th March
37. A game with a color in the title - Black Stories, 30th April
38. A game that makes you want to cry - One Night Ultimate Werewolf, 30th April (Few things are sadder than figuring out exactly who has ended up as what, laying everything out oh-so-logically for the others, including an optimal voting pattern, where the good guys will be safe even if you are wrong/lying... and then having it ruined at the last minute by a player who says "I don't care what anyone says, I just want to vote for you".)
39. A game with magic Terra Mystica, 9th April
40. A game illustrated by your favorite artist - Dixit, 22nd April
41. A game by a designer you've never played before - Paradise Fallen: The Card Game, 8th April
42. A game you own but have never played - Funglish, 22nd May
43. A game that takes place in a town or city you've spent time in - Macao, 22nd April
44. A game that was originally published in a different language - Codenames, April 14th
45. A game set during Christmas - Letters to Santa, a Christmas themed variant of Love Letter, 9th Dec
46. A game designed by someone with your same initials - Escape the Nightmare (Gregory Carslaw), 2nd December
47. A game with 8+ players - The Resistance, 23rd April
48. A game with a controversial theme - Downsize, 13th August
49. A game based on or turned into a TV show - Thunderbirds, 26th April
50. A game you started and didn't finish - Risk Legacy, 4th June

Thanks for the original idea.

1. A game that take 4+ hours to play: maybe Clash of Cultures
We did an interesting play of Clash of Cultures, thanks to 3 quick players we only took 4 hours. The 2 others went for a big fight and I sailed to victory. I like this better with 3 than with 4.

2. A classic game: maybe Power Grid
Power Gridon 13/01: we played the Australia board. I liked it, but I will not play this game often, it may be a bit mathy.

3. A game that became a movie or will become one: Thanks for the suggestions, I read that Catan is planned and I am curious about that one

4. A game published this year: maybe SeaFall: let's hope

5. A game with a number in the title: 1830: Railways & Robber Barons would be great
Pandemic Legacy: Season 1 on 02/01: we won september

6. A game designed by someone under 30: to be honest, I do not know if I have those
I think I made this by playing Here, Fishy, Fishy! on 15/02 with my son. The designer looks young but I could not find her age, feel free to prove me wrong.

7. A game with nonhuman characters: Dominant Species would be nice to play again
King of New York made me a winning monster on 10/02.

8. A funny game: probably Codenames
Potato Man is such a silly looking game. On 16/01 we played it. You seldom see a game that combines being funny and being tactical.

9. A game by a female designer: Bubble Bath Bunny for sure
Bubble Bath Bunnyfirst game of the year on 01/01, my son wants to play it all the time

10. A game with a mystery or thriller theme: Witness please
I did my own suggestion on 16/01 with case 7. 3 new players convinced that this is such an interesting game, even when we messed up badly.

11. A game with a one-word title: should be easy, maybe Temporum
Good to get Blueprints back to the table after all this time on 16/01.

12. A game from a "system" (The Decktet, Looney Pyramids, etc.): 504 qualifies without doubt, after my first 3 games (123, 475,689), I would like to do a random world.
We did world 841 on 09/03. I still find it amazing how well this system works.

13. A game set in a different country: Pax Porfiriana is such an interesting world.
Notre Dame reminded me not only of France but also of the fact that this game packs so much decisions in such a small timeframe.

14. A game based on historical events: Liberté needs to get back to the table.
I went for Dominant Species on 6/4, 4 player went almost at the pace I wanted it to go.

15. A popular designer's first game: does anyone know if there is such a game in my collection?

16. A game from a designer you love that you haven't played yet: Siena fits this description perfectly
I like almost everything I tried made by Friedemann Friese and I got to play Terra on 16/01. I bet he could design every type of game.

17. A game a friend recommended: I guess Patchwork fits in this category.
A friend in our club suggested 1714: The Case of the Catalans on 10/02 and I am always open to new games. It was a really long game and I thought the amount of choices to make was to small, but I liked the historical flavor.

18. A Spiel des Jahres winning game: we still need to win Hanabi with the rainbows added

19. A storytelling game: Once Upon a Time: The Storytelling Card Game no doubt

20. A game at the bottom of your to-play list: I must say I do not remember why I bought Dreadball: KickOff
On 09/03 we played The Game. I do think it's a forgettable game but it seemed to be the only really short game we brought to game evening. We always end with a few cards left, so maybe frustration pushes this one down on the to paly-list.

21. A game your girlfriend loves (I changed this category a bit): she adores Hera and Zeus
Memoir '44 is our most played game by far and we did a double go at the gold beach. We both lost as the allies, I lost worst.

22. A game with a horror theme: Dark Darker Darkest is something really special
I stumbled into a game of Cthulhu Wars on 6/4. That qualifies for sure. I really liked the atmosphere and the "minis". I lost as the yellow sign.

23. A game more than 100 years old: time for Go

24. A game based entirely on its cover: Abyss, your cover draws me in

25. A game you hate that you've played at least once before: I am hesitating to put Munchkin in here.

26. A game named after a person: Louis XIV qualifies for this one.
I know a lot of people feel Trajan has nothing to do with Trajan, but I disagree and was glad to revisit this game after 3 years on 24/2.

27. A game you can finish in under 15 minutes: it's been too long since I played Pentago XL
Orchard: The Card Game on 09/01: we had high fives when we picked the last fruit with the bird almost at the trees

28. A game with antonyms in the title: I guess this will be hard for everyone, thanks for Agricola: All Creatures Big and Small as suggestion, in different languages Bausack can qualify
We did build and sack buildings in Bausack on 24/2. Still funny after almost 30 years.

29. A game set somewhere you've always wanted to visit: King of New York but I hope the monsters keep quiet during my visit
Mafia de Cuba on 16/01 qualifies for sure, but I guess I am a bit done now with this type of social deduction games.

30. A game that came out the year you were born

31. A game with bad reviews: Rogue Agent can do, but I remember Kingdom Builder got a lot of bad comments also
We played Temporum on 13/1 and I really like it, even when we played it with 5 which is not the best player count I guess. Time travel is such a nice theme, and Tom Vassel is wrong when he says the theme is not there.

32. A game trilogy: Agricola, Le Havre and Ora et Labora feel like a trilogy to me

33. A game from your childhood: Playing Risk 2210 A.D. will feel like going back to Risk from my childhood, without the boring parts
Discovering Rhino Hero for the first time (without the kids, just to try it modest swung me back to my years as a kid, when I made card houses throughout the house.

34. A game with triangle-shaped components: I know Twilight Imperium (Third Edition) has them

35. A game set in the future: Android is a game that really intrigues me, I hope I get some people together to play it.
On 10/02, we played the quick and aggressive game of Nexus Ops, wow, I love it.

36. A game set in a school

37. A game with a color in the title: Black Stories is easy, but I would like to try Red7

38. A game that made you cry/sad: I guess Freedom: The Underground Railroad has a theme that can make me sad and I really want to try it.
I played Imperial 2030 on 11/03 (dust level 4 years+). I forgot how frustrating it is when you build up a move and someone takes the country away, then you build up with another country... I do like the game, but it always has those moments I go shakesurprisecry

39. A game with magic: Seasons is having a chance to be a game I play in 5 consecutive years and I love it every time I play
Weird magic on 16/01 with Voodoo. I was literally under the table laughing with tears, but this game may be a bit to silly for me for repeated plays.

40. A game illustrated by your favorite artist: Carson City and Troyes are both works of the same great artist
I played Loony Quest and when I found out the illustrator also did Earth Reborn I concluded this can qualify. I think his style is really vivid and I like that.

41. A game by a designer you've never played before: I would like to play Core Worlds for this category
I never heard a thing about Heinrich Glumpler, but when Dicke Dämonen hit the table on 16/01 I was intrigued. I would not say no to another of his designs.

42. A game you own but have never played: it's weird but Catan: Seafarers is on my shelf for years and never got out

43. A game that takes place in your hometown (or as close as possible): I should find Hamburgum: Antverpia

44. A game that was originally published in a different language: Copycat is such an overlooked game
Polterfass qualifies as it is never even published in dutch. We played on 10/02 and I won by being a bad person.

45. A game set during Christmas: I guess playing BANG! The Bullet! with Santa as one of the characters will be the closest I will get

46. A game designed by someone with your same initials: Warehouse 51 seems to qualify

47. A game with 8+ players: Mascarade will be the one I suppose or maybe Die Kutschfahrt zur Teufelsburg

48. A game with a controversial theme: I want to play Chaos in the Old World for years now but somehow we never have the right amount of players, it's a joke in our game group.

49. A game based on or turned into a TV show: If someone asks me to join a game of Firefly: The Game

50. A game you started but never finished: World of Warcraft: The Boardgame and Twilight Imperium (Third Edition) are the 2 "big" candidates for this one

Progress: 29/52

I'm not going to restrict myself to doing one game each week. I have weeks/weekends where I get a lot of plays in. Then I have really dead weeks/weekends. So, I'm just going to try to get all 52 done, in any order, and not necessarily one a week.

Here's the checklist!:

2. A classic game
3. A game that became a movie
4. A game published this year: Isle of Skye: From Chieftain to King
5. A game with a number in the title
6. A game designed by someone under 30
7. A game with nonhuman characters: Blood Rage
8. A funny game
9. A game by a female designer

16. A game from a designer you love that you haven't played yet: The Gallerist
17. A game a friend recommended: Ponzi Scheme
18. A Spiel des Jahres winning game
19. A storytelling game
20. A game at the bottom of your to-play list: Diamant
21. A game your mom loves: Codenames
22. A game with a horror theme

52 Game Challenge

I stumbled upon this challenge and thought it would be great fun. However, after comparing the original list to my owned games I feared I had to purchase quite a few games I might not be interested in at all simply to meet criteria. I also don't want to play too many games that don't interest me and members of my group at all even if we can borrow them from someplace. But I loved the idea, so I added in my own additions to make a list of 52 categories.

During the year I will play a game from each of the 52 categories below, not counting a single game for multiple categories. It's actually a bit similar to what I tend to do for the Advent Calendar challenges, but it also has things on there that I never would have thought of without the provided challenge list. I look forward to trying them all.

I will mark each category with a and the name of the selected game as I go along.

Play the following:
1. A game published this year Fabled Fruit

Done!

This challenge did what it set out to do: got me to try some games that I never would have played otherwise. Some were old favorites that I never seemed to have time to play, and others I thought I would never like and was pleasantly surprised. And there are those few that will probably go back into the closet for another decade and never be missed.

Thanks, Ben!
Fun accomplished!
