I recently posted a "Best Of" series of videos over my YouTube channel and BGG Blog. You can check it out here:

https://boardgamegeek.com/blogpost/49323/best-games-2015

But one question that's been asked a few times is, "What about your best fillers or your best lunch games?"

I didn't really have many stand outs in that area. But, I realized revisiting my notes for the year, that I actually mentioned several of "filler" games in my Best Social Games list. I then revisited the other filler I had marked down as standouts, which wasn't a lot, but I did end up with a list of 10 games I feel are solid.

It's interesting to me that I gravitated more toward social fillers than I have in the past. I think it's part industry trend and part "me". There wasn't as many traditional fillers... or at least "amazing" ones.

Did I miss any? Add 'em!

Honorable Mention

We had a lot of fun with this one during our lunch hour at work. We got close to about 20 plays with it. I feel it needs an expansion to kick it into "great game" stature. But, as it is, it was definitely and worth the ~15-20 plays of it.

My favorite of the Tiny Epic series so far. It has a lot of very interesting "chewy" elements to it. Plays like a more elaborate dice placement Euro game in about 1/3 of the time. Another lunch time hit.

Crazy silly "drawing(?)" game. It's themed like a Super Mario Bros. or Metroid style video game. Lots of variability (and replayability) with all the levels in the box. It's just a "fun" game overall. If you can track this one down, do. If not, you can find it's smaller scale cousin, Doodle Quest pretty readily.

The was a kind of end-of-year surprise for my lunch group. For my end of year video, I put it in as the #7 Euro game. It really does pack quite a bunch in it's short play time. So much so that I feel it competes on a equal level with some of the meatier medium-weight Euro games out there.

This is another one that straddles the "filler world". It hearkens back to other co-op/solo filler games like Space Hulk Death Angel and Red November. It made my top Ameritrash list in the #7 position. It's fantastic system.

The Grizzled is such an oddball to classify. It's very much a co-op filler, but it has a fantastic social deduction aspect that reminds me loosely of Hanabi. It helps to play with the same group several times, or even with experience Grizzled players.

A lot has been said about Spyfall. It's one of the most unique social deduction games out there. It can be a disconcerting first couple of plays and it's fallen flat a few times for me, but when it goes off, it's beautiful to behold.

This the main game that was overlooked in my Best of Year video. I did make mention of it a ramble-y section of the video that I edited pretty heavily. The video was over an hour with it in. But, Arboretum is an excellent "Lost Cities Killer". This is one that re-surfaced several times over the year, and I recommend it across the board.

For me, this is the undisputed social deduction champ of 2015. I know a lot of folks haven't had a chance to play it yet. It's basically a combination of Concept, Codenames, Mysterium, Clue, and The Resistance. Sounds terrible or amazing. It's amazing. It also happens to be extremely thematic.

This one gets bonus points for being an Ameritrash filler. I know Warhammer Quest: Adventure Card Game is on this list too. But, that's a co-op! There are basically zero good Ameritrash filler games that are competitive and relatively deep in tactics. More bonus points for the Return of the Jedi/Queen's Gambit theme.

My favorite filler of the year! A quick simultaneous-auction-pricing tile-laying game that works for two or more. Simple tile laying reminiscent of Carcassonne, with scoring combos for each game that add a combinatorial explosion of replay value.

Yet, the secret simultaneous selection of one tile to discard, price two that you must buy if not sold to others, coupled with the option to buy from others, just makes for a fantastically interactive game, not experienced since the likes of Witch's Brew or For Sale.

The 2014 filler game Port Royal has proved hugely popular with my gaming group. Its mix of skilful strategy and push-your-luck has seen us play it zillions of times over the past year.

The expansion Ein Auftrag get noch ... (Just One More Contract ...) actually makes this filler game slightly quicker, as it is now somewhat easier to reach the endgame trigger of 12 victory points.

Similar to Sushi Go, but instead of the point salad variety players can alter how scoring goes. The order in which those cards are picked are placed in reverse order. This means the first player might grab something to boost their score by a lot only to have the player picking last and thus placing first screwing them over. Great art and theme as well. Scoreboard is kind of lacking as it is three cards you combine. I like the KS birdhouse though.

Joel, I know how much you hated Qwixx. But Qwinto is quite different and may be something you actually like. The active player gets to choose how many and which dice (out of 3 possible) to roll. Hence the active player chooses which rows are available to players for possible scoring on his turn. The size of the number you are hoping for also factors into how many dice you choose to roll. You get to place the sum of the dice in any space on any of the colors of the rolled dice. The spaces do not have to be filled in order, however, each row must maintain ascending order from left to right. Columns also have a sodoku type requirement and there are bonuses available in certain columns. The way rows are scored is pretty cool: one point for each filled space unless you manage to fill the entire row, in which case you get points equal to the number in the rightmost space. In the forums, there is an online link for a scoresheet you can use on your phone so all you need is the three dice. There are a lot more decisions to make here than in Qwixx and the push your luck is much more integrated with calculated risk. It is not just "roll and take the best you can get" that is in Qwixx. It's worth a try.

I like the look and mechanics behind this one for a filler game. You are only playing the last 3 outs of the game and it not only has you guessing pitches but also a quick dice rolling phase to simulate running the bases. There is a lot of luck involved but it has strategy too. It is light, quick and looks great! The only drawback I see is that it is only 2 player so it wouldn't be a good filler for a group. It would work will in conjunction with a player elimination game though.
