Hello and welcome to the February list.

It turns out that this year is a leap year, so what will you be playing on your free day that doesn't even count towards ageing? (I think that is how it works..)

And don't forget to take photos of your weeping, vanquised opponent.

Failed experiemnt or misunderstood Mark Herman banger?

I'm not quite ready to start the game yet but it is on the table and ready to go. I just need one more pass at the rules withouth falling asleep. That's not an idictment of the rules, mind you. The rule book is fine, I just need to read it again.

I'm looking forward to this one. I've got the article in Battles mag to accompany the game and I'm feeling quite pro-Herman at the moment.

Just playing my first game of Triumph and Tragedy with my two sons. The first three turns the Axis took control of most of central Europe and Turkey. My older son, playing the West, said that the game was boring, and my soviets quietly built up.

Then all hell broke loose in 1939, with an Axis invasion of Western Allied protectorate, Denmark, and an initial assault on France. Seeing the trouble the West was in, my soviets declared war on the Axis for fear that they might take two capitals (Paris and London). Both my sons were now fully engaged, the previously bored West player was on the edge of his seat as Paris fell and he desperately struggled for survival as USA sympathy for the British ebbed away.

My soviets managed to draw some of the Axis forces east to defend key resource points.

Axis submarines marauded throughout the Baltic and North seas, while an Italian aircraft carrier task force blockaded the Southern Atlantic and other Axis forces seized the Mediterranean trade routes. British fleets were unable to suppress the interdiction perpetrated by the Italian carriers, but did manage to retake Paris.

The soviet advances into Eastern Europe accelerated with the deployment of heavy tanks, but eventually lost momentum due to a lack of anti-aircraft capability.

The Axis retains the lead as we enter 1943, but all the major powers are depleted in strength, and the blockade of Western supplies continues to take its toll. Axis agents continue to influence US policy where there is little sympathy for the British plight.

Very enjoyable game - all three of us are keen to continue and already discussing different strategies. It looks like the West is the hardest to play well, at least for my son who doesn't know enough of the history to have protected his supply routes effectively.

Board Game: Invasion 1066: The Battle of Hastings
Nice to try something with a little less chrome now and again. This fits the bill. A good tight rule-set with enough wrinkles to keep me happy.

At first sight the tactical options for both sides seem limited, but having played it through once, I can see where quite a few strategies could be tried even with the historical set-up. The option of including some pre-battle maneuvering with the second scenario will add to replayability.

First battle ended with the Normans breaking the Saxon middle and grinding their way to victory. The Saxons had looked to be odds-on for victory at the midway point, but some fortuitous dice-rolling and the intervention of William and the Papal Banner broke the will of the defenders. Harold tried to save the day, but it was not to be.

Still plugging away at Tarawa, trying not to forget various rules. I'm fairly nicely set up at turn 12 in the mid-game (famous last words...) and got a lucky break with the next wave being ordered in early.

They're not on the beach yet though.

I've restarted the campaign. So far I've just completed the first turn. Glider and paratroops landed relatively intact and unharmed. However, the beach landings were brutal.

This has been filling up my wargaming time of late...very clean implementation of the POG CDG system in the Spanish Civil War. Attention to detail by the designer is fantastic, player aids etc., are a pleasure.

Took us a little while to land on successful Nationalist strategies, but now they've won the past two games and it's ON. This one is the latest in our long line of CDGs that occupied our attention for several months.

As mentioned above, I'm starting turn 5 as I post this. Hopefully I'll finish the short scenario tonight or tomorrow. I'm getting used to checking dots, and the system makes sense, although I'm probably screwing up a few things. While I'll need to clear off that table, it won't be long until this gets back on it.

I'm trudging along with my 1st sub, which barely made it back to port once (2 hull boxes before dying, and I needed to roll a lucky 4 to escape escort detection) and I still haven't hit 100K tons, although I'm close. I've made a few errors. Notably, I forgot to take an extra month for refit on 3 patrols for some minor hull damage (in my mind, 1-3 hull damage was free). I caught up those months later, however it did disrupt the timing of some of the patrols and I was firing at some ships with crappy 1939-1940 torpedoes when I should have been using 1941, so my tonnage might have been higher.

It's 1942 now, and it's getting more dangerous out there. Will I survive? We'll see!

Finally, on Table 3, Scenario 20 is set up. I should make more progress on it, too. The Germans have had a rough go on Fog of War rolls and are behind schedule, however their troops are a lot better than the Soviets, so we'll see if it's enough to counter the Soviet entrenchments and minefields.

On turn 2 of this one, I'm the Germans, and finally getting an idea what to do (the road movement rules really make this wide open). Alas, my opponent was snowed in at MMP's Winter Offensive last week, and just got a file back to me the other day, so it can move forward again.

My live VASSAL game of 1914: Glory's End still didn't progress in January, mostly because of me. We were supposed to play last Sunday, however I gave myself food poisoning (I won't make that mistake again) and had to cancel. Hopefully we make some progress this month.
