Tasks and Challenges

This is the month for Welsh people all around the world to celebrate, the Six Nations rugby tournament is in full swing and the 1st March is St Davids Day in which we honour our very own patron saint. Being Welsh I would love to see this months geeklist be a celebration of all things Wales. So whether you want to play a game of Snowdonia or Ivor the Engine, provide us stories of visits you have taken to Wales or just want to post videos of some welsh choir singers I will leave it up to you.

As a reward I will use any GG donated to this and last months geeklist to provide funds for a Welsh Microbadge to as many people as possible who post to this list (probably drawn randomly) that includes a bit of Welsh fun.

Happy St Davids Day and get posting.

Picked this up a month ago and, along with Grand Austria Hotel, it has been a big hit.

thumbsup Best with 2
thumbsup Clever blend of mechanisms including drafting, area control, bonus management (cards you build), etc.
thumbsup Quality components
thumbsup Playtime around 45 minutes, good week night game
thumbsup Good mix of tactics and strategy (but definitely more tactical)

thumbsdown Great theme but highly abstract gameplay
thumbsdown Random -- that can be mitigated to an extent but not entirely
thumbsdown OOP in English. However, the game is language independent and can be imported easily enough. English rules available online.

Just got this in the mail and e were eager to get it to the table. I love 7 Wonders, my husband will play but isn't a huge fan. We thought the 2 player would eliminate the pressure of deciding on a card when everyone else is playing (which he doesn't like). It did eliminate that pressure, but unfortunately he was unable to build a large amount of cards that came up on his turn, and I was able to sweep up most of the blue cards.

Jury is out on this one, hopefully it was a fluke and is usually more balanced.

My favorite new to me game of the (infant) year. We played with the Hispania map from Concordia: Salsa

With the salt and without the Forums, I closed the game out laying all my houses, and won on the back of the Weaver card and the three salt cities.

Really enjoy the flow of this game and how timeless it seems

What a game! Involving and long but everything is logical and you can't see time passing by.

I'm so happy my other half loves it too! Great afternoons and nights in sight.

If you like deep civilization games, this one is for you !

EDIT about the plays:

So we had a first play yesterday with the "simple" rules, but we liked it so much that we played through the 3rd age even if we weren't supposed to. 4 to 5 hours length.

Today we played another one with the complete rules, meaning with war and aggression cards (no pacts because 2 players). Light additions in term of rules but now military unit production enters the scene and it changes a lot strategy wise. Down to 3h30 length now.

Really, really great game, very deep but still, it doesn't make your brain melt because you don't have to calculate things constantly; you can focus on what really matters : choice rather than maths.

This is a monster game with a fairly simple rule set. The interaction can be fierce but isn't nasty. That being said, it's definitely a game for players of equal skill. A newbie can be crushed by an (unforgiving) veteran.

thumbsup A heavy game that is great with 2 and scales well
thumbsup Exceptionally deep game play with a relatively simple rule set
thumbsup Fun, 50s-style clip art aesthetic with a sense of humor
thumbsup Excellent replayability since you play the players, not the game
thumbsup 30-45 minutes per player (depending on the players themselves)

thumbsdown Expensive as Splotter titles are small print runs
thumbsdown Board is very utilitarian
thumbsdown Massive table hog without clever, user-created upgrades (of which there are many including accordion trays, player mats, etc.)
thumbsdown Can be unforgiving, especially to new players

Even though it is in the same weight range (4.0) as Vital Lacerda games or Through the Ages, it is a lot easier to learn with a much shorter rule book.

A new month and an early weekend for us.
So time for a game, my gf picked this one for the evening.
Such a neat deckbuilder, very cool theme and plays extremely well with 2.
We struggled our whole game, never really felt in control.
We ended up losing while fighting our last monster.

I picked this one to end our evening.
We didn't like it's big brothet but the both of us do like this one.
We introduced Agricola: All Creatures Big and Small – More Buildings Big and Small to the mix for the very first time.
We both created a small farm with some buildings and stables. Big boosted meadows. My gf went heavy into cows and sheep. I went for horses, sheep and during my last turn snatched enough pigs to get a point there.
I ended up with the victory.

Very cool how by adding just 4 buildings to the mix the expansion gives some cool new strategies.
Alot of fun in a very small box.

Our second time playing and once again I lost. Not common around here for me to lose multiple times in a row unless it is a dice game because those things hate me. I only lost by a single point though so it was extremely close. Once again though I ran in to an issue of like 4 turns in a row just sacrificing to get myself moving forward again. She mostly was able to avoid sacrificing just to try to get something that was going to work or resources and she had a card that by the end let her get access to every buildding she could have built, while I was sitting at the end of the game with half of mine sitting off to the side and nothing on my board I could have built.

Was still fun, though I called it about half way through that I was going to lose....though she never believes when I say that as I do usually have things lined up in my favor in games to pull suprise point jumps at the end where it matters. Definitley planning to keep this one in the collection now that I did finally get a hold of it and appears to be one we can have a pretty good competition between us with.

Amanda and I both love this game.
Scores are usually close, I squeaked a victory 91-89.
I was inspired to make a foam core insert for this because of the amount of tiles. Set up is now a breeze and I think that greatly increases the chances of it getting to the table.

A tight resource system with virtually no luck. Love this game.

Had a bad start off and couldn't get anything for about halfway around the track hardly for buttons. So it made it pretty hard to keep up. In the end I lost 18 of my 20 points for 2 points. And she lost 32 points, but with the 7 point bonus and all her excess buttons ended up at 18. So about the same difference in score. It was fun though trying to find a way around my issues for the way it started and happy I did have less exposed spaces than her at the end at least.

She got off to a good start and was ahead in points for most of the game, but I managed to pull off a win in the end as the one person (forget the name right now) gave me a bonus point for each meal made after him and was just enough to push me over after creating my third meal. Ended 16-13 so it did come down to the wire.

thumbsup Deck Building (almost always fun to me)
thumbsup Interesting combos
thumbsup Making the meals automatically culls the deck since you remove the cards for the ingredients used
thumbsup Different theme compared to most deck builders

There aren't any major negatives I can think of right now. In our few plays so far it seems like most times we are wasting our first turn purchasing a fork unless something really good with spoons is available for purchase. So maybe we should just start with a fork in the deck as a house rule.

We had to pick up our vacuum from the shop today, which just so happened to be a few miles away from my FLGS. We stopped in and as I was doing my usual walk through making mental lists of all the things I would buy if I won the lottery, Jana (my wife) says to me, "Can we play Viticulture today?"

I was surprised as usually she doesn't make game suggestions. She saw it on the shelf at the store and it must have just triggered the need to make some wine!

We decided to add one of the modules from Tuscany. Being the Essential edition, we were already playing with all of the Tier 1 modules except for the Patronage cards. These cards didn't really change much of the game, although mine helped keep me grounded and focused as I needed to end the game with the fewest buildings.

Jana didn't even bother with hers because she wanted to focus on other stuff.

Surprisingly, I won! This is the first time I won in Viticulture against her. I'm not quite sure what I did other than I didn't expand my winery fast like I usually do, and I didn't go after visitor cards as much as I have in the past.

The next game we play will be with the extended board, which I'm both nervous and excited about. Hopefully it plays well with 2 people.

Viceroy is a charming puzzle pyramid building game.
The two player isn't as interactive as the 3-4 player game, but I like it that way. More ability to plan, less likelihood that you will get stuck.
The fantasy theme, a tad abstract, has wonderful artwork to enjoy as you build.
Each turn you will get to pay to place a character or law card, these give you a benefit, short term or long term, your choice. Many ways to engine build, set match, collect victory points. Lots of thinking on the fly, otherwise the AP could get significant...
I am sure at least one of the characters has some Welsh background, they are a very diverse bunch.

We finally got some gaming in as a couple tonight, playing Port Royal with the new expansion that Bethan received as a mothers day gift. We took both the Competitive and Cooperative modes for a trial run.

We really enjoyed the new cards which added a nice bit of variety to the game in general and the contracts offered a fun new way to get some extra money. We didn't find that the contracts had a big impact on our competitive game however only getting me one coin and Bethan nothing. They did come in to play during the cooperative mode as they are the main scoring mechanic. The game converts to a timed run through trying to complete as many contracts as you can before it expires and then checking your ranked score. Contracts can be fulfilled in a number of ways such as having certain people in your tableau, completing expeditions among others.

thumbsup Nice variety of extra cards
thumbsup Coop mode is a nice touch
thumbsdown Contracts maybe not used as often in two player games.
thumbsup Game is as fun as ever.

As a tie in to the Welsh theme, did you know that many famous Pirates came from Wales. Bartholomew Roberts (Black Bart) and Henry Morgan were both Welsh.

Well isn't my wife a lucky lady. What good mother wouldn't want to don her hard hat and design a city on Mother's Day.

After explaining to Amanda that this is exactly what she needs for Mother's Day (Flowers too). We excavated Quadroplois from its shrink.

Quick rules explanation and we were soon dumping toxic waste in parks ( yes seriously ).

Amanda hates box topping ( scores on lids ) so I was thrilled to see a generous score sheet. ( I like to look back ). Snowdonia is the only other game we have sheets for.

First game I won 54-37. After scoring Amanda had a better grasp on the game.
Second game was a tie 42-42 ( Didn't check for tie break rule ).
Third game was 58-47 Amanda got the better of me.

The placement of the architect reminds me of Targi, or a similar feel.
Set up is a breeze due to a fantastic insert.

The "Classic" Game involves just 16 decisions per player and this game packs so many choices and variability into those turns its a gem.

There is also an expert version included which we haven't touched yet, adds two more building scoring options and a twist on the selection mechanic.

Oh and if you don't want to dump toxic waste into the parks they have included some playgrounds to add

Had my first game of Gloom with 2 friends. Its a funny game and I enjoy the story telling aspect of it. Its interesting as well how long people will spend telling the story before placing the card.

As my one friend went on like he was reading a novel but his wife just gave brief funny story. Its still enjoyable and quirky, and as a bonus I won.

I ended up with two questions;
d10-1 How long do you spend telling the story when you play a card?
d10-2 and when you play an untimely death card on your first play, can you make a second play with an event or modifier?

After few months, finally it made it to the table this weekend.

I was with a villain deck and my wife played only heroes. It was interesting and actually a better experience compared to what I've remembered.

thumbsup custom dice... lots of them
thumbsup superhero stuff
thumbsup scalability - while I do respect that limiting the number of heroes/dice and lower the HP is limiting the game itself, but I just love that we can play shorter games when we have less time.

thumbsupthumbsdown loads of special powers. On one hand it's great and adds to the variety, on the other hand even if you just play with 4 characters each + 2 action cards, you have to remind yourself for 10 possible effects every time you field or attack. As we are not playing this regularly we're not so familiar with them and constantly missed few.

thumbsdown rulebook. The playmat explains the rules better than the rulebook.

As an addition, as my son shows growing interest in this game, my lovely wife made some new dice bags so we finally have proper ones
I also hope that we will play it more in the future (so I could justify booster packs sneaked in to some orders...)

thumbsup We love the art work and like the theme of trying to build the city.

thumbsup Learning the game is relatively easy.

thumbsup It is fun trying to figure out the best path to victory. There seem to be many and with all the variation in buildings and guilds, the replayability value should be high.

thumbsup We also like how you can use the different types of guilds to make the game friendlier or more cut throat if you choose.

thumbsup We found the 2 player variant easy to use and not objectionable. We wouldn't mind playing with more but do wonder if it would make the game longer than we like.

thumbsup We barely scratched the surface on our first play so we are looking forward to expanding our strategies in our next plays.

thumbsdown All the components take a lot of room on the table!

thumbsupthumbsup To all the people on BGG who helped me make the decision about whether to buy this game. I got the expansion from a friend but didn't have the base game and asked for comments to help make my decision to purchase.

This game was not for us. We rented it and played it at both 3 and 2-player so I thought I would post it in case it appeals to others.

thumbsup Solid crunchy medium-heavy Euro
thumbsup Good interaction
thumbsup Works with 2

thumbsdown Unpleasant and unnecessary theme given the thematically disconnected gameplay. It could have easily been prospectors in the California gold rush or oil companies in an oil rush or colonizing Mars, etc.
thumbsdown Disconnected pile of mechanisms. They are all integrated but, at the same time, don't really connect, especially thematically.
thumbsdown Better at higher player counts. With 2, the stock investment options are limited (push one up hard, ride the coat tails of the other player's stock push).
thumbsdown Average component quality although the ink wells and diamonds are fun.

This game has been highly praised so I'm sure others will appreciate it. But it just didn't work for us.

Got another play in over the weekend with my lovely wife. I jumped out to a quick lead drawing a couple of order cards that I could fill without a large cellar, I maintained that lead for another few years...got down to where I jumped up to 20 points by giving a tour with the wine tasting, She somehow managed to score 7 points in the winter season to finish with 21 points...Ugh...sooooooo close! I've yet to beat her 2 players yet (I did manage to beat her an my 11 y/o in a 3 player game), but I will not give up trying.

Love this game.

We were on vacation last week and although I brought a few games for us, this is the one we played. This has become my favorite short 2-player game and my wife likes it quite a bit as well as she actually chose it among the options I brought.

We split 2-2.

thumbsup Good travel game
thumbsup Easy to teach
thumbsup Short play-time
thumbsup Lots of decisions
thumbsdown Theme is thin
thumbsdown Too big a footprint to play on a plane.

What Fun!

The Scientists must capture 3 baby raptors or put the Mother Raptor to sleep while the raptors are trying to hide 3 babies or eat the scientists.

This game is very quick to set up and simple to learn and plays in 20 minutes or so. There is a lot more to pay attention to then I first realized so this will be a real challenge to master.

The raptors easily won this game, but the scientists will be a lot smarter next round.

Playing with Ambassadors expansion, using the "Power Hungry" base card set up. We play using the Llopis/Entwife 2 player rules, where after you draft and place your card, you draw a card from the deck and then discard a card before passing.

My wife took it too me this game, Winning 81-71. We like the flow of this game and the sense of accomplishment with your space station, though it is quite a table hog.

We had a great game of Imperial Settlers last night, it was still a bit slow as it was my second game and the Mrs' third. I decided to select the barbarian faction and the Mrs chose the Japanese so whilst I was amassing meeples and the Mrs had plenty of fruit.

She was busy getting points early with the fruit whilst I was amassing resources and buildings and trying to keep up with my temple cards. I got lucky and destroyed her Japanese castle that provided points. In the end I used my Saboteur to steal a final fruit she needed which made the difference between the Mrs Winning and our actual Draw

thumbsup It has a sold theme that links well to good game mechanics
thumbsup It plays great with two players or four
thumbsup The factions feel fairly well balanced even with the difference in complexity when using them.

thumbsdown It is a thought intensive game that needs to keep planning what you will be doing otherwise the game slows down a lot
thumbsdown The Japanese/Egyptian Factions seem pretty complex which makes learning the game a bit more challenging
thumbsdown We were not exactly sure we are playing correctly even with the rule book open on the table. Mastering the basics is ok but getting to grips with all the extras is challenging.
