A group of my friends on here decided to complete geeklists following themes every so often (Boomer top 10 list challenge!). Here's my list for what I consider the top 10 game expansions.

All board game expansions fall into one of two categories. First is the "more of a good thing" in which it just provides more content for added replayability through more possible combinations (think more characters, locations, enemies, etc.). While this new stuff might introduce some new mechanics to the game, it doesn't fundamentally change the basic gameplay. The second type of expansion is the "new wrinkle" which introduces new mechanics into the basic gameplay of the game (often through modules that get added in).

For my list, I picked expansions that fall under the second category only. I figured if I had picked ones from the first it would not only be hard to differentiate any given expansion for one game over another and it would basically just be a rehash of my favorite games as these are the ones I generally buy these types of expansions for as they see heavy enough play that I'm looking for added replayability without changing the game itself.

In all fairness, I haven't played a ton of expansions that would qualify for this list as I don't often replay games enough that I feel a need for an expansion over buying a completely new game. That being said, it means I'm pickier about the expansions I think are worth buying and I would recommend buying any of these expansions if you like the base game.

As far as ordering goes, I tried to order the games by how essential I consider the expansion to gameplay first and how much I enjoy the game second (as I found it impossible to just rate based on #1 since it basically was comparing apples to oranges).

Honorable Mention Lords of Waterdeep: Scoundrels of Skullport

I've only played this expansion once and it was three years ago now, but I remember the corruption taking a game I found entirely underwhelming and forgettable and giving it a hook. I subscribe to the mantra "a game shouldn't need an expansion to fix it" and I still find LoW inferior when compared to a large number of worker placement games, but it's a good expansion that took a game from "wouldn't bother to play" to "could play".

#10 Battlestar Galactica: Exodus

BSG is too long and repetitive for my tastes, but I will play it on occasion so long as it's got the Cylon fleet board. I couldn't care less about Pegasus, but without the fleet board the Cylons are nerfed because you just have to jump away and it wipes the slate clean. With the fleet board, the Cylons are an omnipresent threat that just won't go away.

#9 7 Wonders: Cities

I'm one of the few that doesn't like Leaders. I think there are some leaders that are just so much better than others and the 1-2 extra coin cost doesn't help balance that. It's frustrating to play in a game when you get stuck with the crappier leaders because you feel down and out before the game has really even begun. Babel just was too random for me to like. I like Cities because it introduces some more flexibility in resources and added avenues for points that feels more balanced than Leaders does to me. It also is a nice jolt of newness into a game that can feel stale if you play base too often.

#8 Cosmic Encounter: Cosmic Incursion

More aliens is always good when it comes to Cosmic Encounter, but this is the expansion that introduced the Reward Deck which is something I never play without when I play Cosmic. The Reward Deck introduces some real incentive for forming defensive alliances which is a very welcome addition. Plus it ups the game-breaky screwiness factor even more which is always fun.

#7 Machi Koro: Harbor Expansion

Machi Koro is a super fun game but since all cards are available at all times in the base game it becomes very samey after playing a handful of times. The Harbor Expansion introduced some much needed variety in cards and also gave some real incentive for pursuing a two dice strategy which wasn't very present in the base game.

I would rate this higher if their solution for introducing the new cards (shuffle them all together and make sure you have 10 unique at all times) wasn't so terrible. To guarantee a much better distribution of cards, I recommend playing with the 4-4-2 variant I saw suggested on here where you shuffle up all the 1-6 cards in one pile, the 7+ in another pile, and the purple in another pile. Deal four cards from both the 1-6 and 7+ and two from the purple following the Harbor expansion rules. This prevents the game from getting bogged down by a bunch of high cards coming out early and also seems to balance things out a bit more so one person generally doesn't just run away with the game because great cards come up on their turn.

#6 Roll for the Galaxy: Ambition

More planets is always good, but the new dice and events are great additions. The black and orange dice help with opening up your options. The events help give you direction in the planets and developments you take during the game as well as even more flexibility and protection from crappy rolls. Plus it's easy enough to explain that I always add it in when available, even with new players.

#5 Flash Point: Fire Rescue - Urban Structures

For my money Urban Structures is the best Flash Point expansion to get as it adds some new mechanics and extra complexity without super complex rule additions or any added fiddliness in set up or play. For ~$10 you can't beat what this does for replayability.

#4 Escape: Traps

I love Escape, but normal base Escape is too easy. Expansion modules help with that and I found a good level of difficulty that hit that sweet spot of narrowly losing or winning with under a minute left on the clock at most and often in the final countdown. This involved adding gems for the next player count as well as the max number of quests and curses and treasures.

I've played this expansion five times now and have found it provided a comparable level of difficulty with only adding in two time chambers and two trap rooms and no extra gems. While the other expansions are fun and I will still play them, for ease of set up and play to difficulty level, this expansion gives the best payoff. Plus it's still fun to play and promotes collaboration!

#3 Suburbia Inc

There's a lot in this small package. The new tiles are good and the borders are a very welcome addition. If you like Suburbia this is pretty much a must buy. I always play with this, even when teaching because it's that easy to explain and grok.

#2 King of Tokyo: Power Up!

The only bad thing I can say about this expansion is that it feels like they purposely left it out of the base game just to make more money than they would have including it in the base game (who makes a game with different characters and doesn't have variable playing powers?!). Evolution mechanic is great because it gives you something to do when you roll lots of hearts and don't need them or are in Tokyo. The only time I play without this is when playing a copy that doesn't have it.

#1 Room 25: Season 2

This expansion is so good. More rooms that are awesome and add new depth to play. Your different characters actually have variable player powers now which are cool! Adrenaline is great to provide you with an extra boost and some flexibility at a critical juncture. Plus, it's easy enough to explain to new players so you can always play with it (which you're going to want to do).
