The idea behind these lists is to post what you're currently playing, or just played. It's interesting to see who's playing what, to see if people are playing the same things, and to ask questions that might otherwise be relegated to a forum about a game with the benefit of the responses coming from someone who has it fresh on their mind.

Here's last month's list: What We're Playing - April 2016

I've been RPG-deprived for quite a while, so I was very happy to get in even a little bit of playing over the weekend. We wound up without a lot of time, but the important thing is we got rolling on the game again when it was risking being so long that we'd lose interest again.

Playing an ongoing game set loosely in the Shadowfist world, but following an apocalyptic event that has destroyed the world in a future juncture. (For those who don't know Shadowfist, it involves time travel as a main world premise).

This is a game with just me GMing and Lisa as a player. Her character, Samantha (usually goes by just 'Sam') had been cut off from most of her allies (except for one, Zael, who got pulled along with her through a time portal) for a while. This play, they managed to find their way to a familiar place in the Netherworld (an inter-time place used for time travel in the Shadowfist world) and finally reunite with their teammates. They had brought along a friend they made in a past juncture, who is being very overwhelmed by all the things in the modern world. (He was also more than a bit horrified when he was left to assist Zael with some work and she began pulling (cybernetic) limbs off a dead body to use as parts).

The reunited group set out to get answers from the Jammers, who they know were behind a devastating explosion that may relate to the cause of the future cataclysm. They evaded Architect patrols and reached the Junkyard, where they tried to explain to some Jammer leaders about what was going on. One Jammer - a cyborg Orangutan was getting increasingly nervous as they talked and made a run for it. They managed to capture him (though one of them was rather beaten up in the process) and get a lot of answers.

And I realize most of that probably made no sense.

Flash Point: Fire Rescue is a co-op game (which can be played solo) where the object is to use your fire department crew members to rescue people from a burning building. It's a grim theme, but an exciting game.

Since this game is on my Hardcore 10 x 10 list, I plan to play it at least 10 times this year. I own the base game, and several of the expansions which provide more characters and boards (and rules pertaining to them).

Unless stated otherwise, the games below were played solo using 2 or more characters, using the "experienced" (advance) rules.

NOTE: Loss conditions are losing at least 4 persons, and/or having the building/structure collapse by using up all 24 damage cubes before rescuing at least 7 persons.

May 1, 2016
d10-1 Base game, Side 1 of the base board. Recruit difficulty level.
3 firefighters: Driver/Operator, Hazmat Technician, Generalist.

Victory! 7 rescued, 1 lost, 2 left on the board.
5 of the additional Hot Spots were on the board, but the building took minimal damage (from black cubes).
I continued to play afterwards, and rescued the final 2 people.
All POI's cleared, building intact with 10 damage, fire spreading quickly.
Final Victory: 9 rescued, 1 lost.

May 5, 2016
d10-2 Base game, Side 2 of the base board. Recruit difficulty level.
3 firefighters: Driver/Operator, Paramedic, Imaging Technician.
This board is tricky because there are only 2 initial openings to the outside, and the inner doors are mostly clustered together with usually only one opening per room.

The 1st explosion blew off two doors! The game's off to a good start!

I chopped an opening into the right wall early on to create an extra exit for the rescuers, but it only helped bring on the building collapse sooner.

Loss! Building collapsed! 6 rescued, 4 lost (2 in the collapse; 1 blank POI unplaced). 1 Hotspot unplaced. 2 Hazmats disposed of, 1 left on the board.

May 5, 2016
d10-3 Base game, Side 2 of the base board. Recruit difficulty level.
3 firefighters: Driver/Operator, Imaging Technician, Paramedic. (I switched the firefighter order from last time.)

Loss! Building collapsed! 6 rescued, 4 lost (3 in the collapse; 1 person and 1 blank POI unplaced). 2 Hotspots unplaced. 1 Hazmat disposed of, 2 exploded. (I needed at least 2 more rounds to win.)

May 10, 2016
d10-4 Base game, Side 2 of the base board. Recruit difficulty level.
4 firefighters: Driver/Operator, Imaging Technician, CAFS, Paramedic.
(which adds 3 Hotspots at the start, not 2 like the previous games with 3 firefighters).

Victory! 7 rescued, 3 lost, all POIs cleared. 3 persons were already lost when I only had 5 rescued!
I continued to play to get all the firefighters out, which created a bit more damage.
1 Hazmat disposed of, 2 left unexploded. 2 Hotspots unplaced.

May 10, 2016
d10-5 Honor & Duty expansion, subway station board (no vehicles). Recruit difficulty level.
4 firefighters: Fire Captain, Imaging Technician, Paramedic, Generalist.

Loss! 4 Victims lost! Fire raging, 2 Hazmats exploded.
(I kept playing to see if I could rescue anyone else.'
Final Tally: 5 rescued, 5 lost (and all blanks discovered). 3 Hotspots unplaced. 5 Damage cubes left. 1 Hazmat disposed of, and 2 exploded.

May 10, 2016
d10-6 Honor & Duty expansion, subway station board (no vehicles). Recruit difficulty level.
4 firefighters: Fire Captain, Imaging Technician, Paramedic (switched later for CAFS), Generalist.

Victory! 7 rescued (+ 3 blanks). 1 Hazmat exploded, 2 unplaced.
I continued to play to try to get everyone out.
Final tally: 7 rescued (+ 5 blanks), 3 lost. 3 Hazmats exploded. All Hotspots placed.

Games day Saturday!

Started off with a quick game of Between Two Cities. It was very close; four players had 54 points, and the winner had 55 points.

Then Theomachy, which I'd been wanting to play with more than 2. The bidding and deck building is pretty interesting, though we had problems with how to play. The default mode has player elimination, which doesn't appeal to us. There's an alternative "epic" mode with scoring and no elimination, but it takes longer. So we played the epic mode but just ended when the first player was elimination. This whole player-elimination thing may be a big problem for getting the game played more.

A quick game of Fairy Tale as a filler waiting for other players to finish their game.

Legends is a new one for us. A light game of card collecting and time management. Fun and fast-playing.

Taught Factory Funner. Really enjoying this game; I like it a little bit more than the original.

And an obligatory game of Tajemnicze Domostwo to wrap up the day. We won on the last turn!

Spent mother's day with Lisa, her mother and her brother. We just hung out and played games; and Lisa and her brother made dinner for their mother. We played a lot of light games.

We played several games of Qwirkle Cubes, which Lisa's mother was happy to win all of. In one game she got a Qwirkle on her first turn - never seen that happen before!

Also some Martian Dice and Cardline: Animals.

And one game each of Factory Funner and La Boca. We played with the Hard cards in La Boca for the first time - some were quite tricky!

We recently got our Dragon Expansion stuff for Defenders of the Realm, along with another hero pack. Darin and I decided to try it out - we used all 4 new generals, and a mix of the new heroes. Darin just used the Dragon Rider, and I tried the Druid and Monk.

We got our butts kicked. Four times. In four tries, we killed a grand total of two generals. We were overrun (no minions to place), corrupted (last taint crystal placed), and had minions overrun Monarch City. It was brutal.

I don't really feel like messing with the Darkness Spreads and Hero decks to add just one or two new generals at a time, so we'll just have to figure out how to beat these guys. I'm sure we'll manage to do it at some point.

While Darin was playing Battletech, I went to a friend's place to play boardgames. Randy suggested Yedo, as I had never played it before. Part of why I hadn't played it is because he's always described it as "like Lords of Waterdeep" and I found LoW to be pretty meh. I didn't think it was that similar, other than having to complete quests. I quite enjoyed it Yedo.

Randy won this, and I came out of nowhere to finish a really close second (I think 2 points behind). Shevaun finished a little ways back in third.

I was the only person to even draw a black (hardest) quest. I finished it on the last turn, netting me 8 points. The action card I acquired from completing it also let me activate a location twice, and I had a disciple at the docks. Being able to buy points there twice instead of once was a big help, but not enough for me to catch Randy.

I started Saturday afternoon off with some mini golf and ice cream - an excellent way to spend a warm, sunny afternoon. Then we headed back to my place and I taught Randy and Shevaun Mage Knight. Randy had played a couple times before, and Shevaun had only watched a video.

We did the full cooperative scenario, with Tovak (Randy), Arythea (Shevaun) and Wolfhawk (me). Shevaun seemed to pick the game up fairly quickly, given how convoluted this game is. She did have one really rough round though - no movement at all for the first part of it, eventually spending non-movement cards to move. Then she finally got all of her movement cards, and had no good cards left to use at the locations she wanted to go to.

We won the scenario early in the final round. The three of us assaulted the city together, taking it easily.

We were supposed to have Numenera Monday evening, but Darin was (and is ) still struggling with the chest cold. I left him at home and joined the others for a couple board games.

First up was Dragonwood, which I hadn't heard of. It was a fun, light game. Collect sets of cards to then use to Strike (numerically consecutive cards), Stomp (cards with same value) or Scream at (cards of same color) monsters. You could also acquire enhancements (ie +2 to Scream) the same way. Occasionally an event would come up, affecting everyone. The monster cards all had point values that more or less scaled with the difficulty of defeating them.

It was fun - a good filler game.

The other game we played Monday was Witch of Salem. I hadn't really heard much about this game before. It's yet another cooperative game using the Lovecraft mythos. I really liked this. I'd say it sits between Elder Sign and Eldritch Horror in terms of game weight and length.

I really liked the mechanics on this one. It was challenging and we just squeaked out a win, with the Necron marker one space away from killing us.

Soccer Replay is a 2-player (but can be enjoyed solo by playing both sides), roll-dice-look-at-chart, Soccer simulation that concentrates on the highlights of the game. It doesn't look like much, but it's fun to play. I own quite a few of the expansion sets (leagues and championships).

I am continuing the 1930 World Cup replay that I started last year:
http://boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/182184/item/3570289#item35...

...and here is the link to this year's reports:
http://boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/200075/item/4296217#item42...

I am using historical starting line-ups, but, of course, the results will not necessarily be the same, and then in later rounds, the match-ups may also be different.

May 12, 2016
d10-1 Group 1: Argentina vs Mexico 2-1 (actual result was Argentina 6-3 on 7/19/1930)

Mexico took an early lead, with Carreno scoring in the 7th minute.

F. Rosas broke up some dangerous play by Argentina in the 19th minute.

In the 59th minute, Argentina's Chividini make a late tackle against Mexico's Amezcua, resulting in a penalty kick taken by M. Rosas, but the Argentinian goalkeeper, Bossio, made the save!

Argentina tied the game in the 77th minute with a goal by Demaria.

In the 82nd minute, a close range shot by Varallo won the game for Argentina.

May 12, 2016
d10-2 Group 2: Brazil vs Bolivia 0-1 (actual result was Brazil 4-0 on 7/20/1930)

The only goal scored was in the 11th minute by Bolivia's Sainz from a corner kick by Ortiz.

Brazil kept possession of the ball for most of the game, including several corner kicks and shots on goal, but couldn't score.

May 12, 2016
d10-3 Group 4: Paraguay vs Belgium tie 0-0 (actual result was Paraguay 1-0 on 7/20/1930)

Scoreless game, although both teams had chances.

May 12, 2016
d10-4 Group 3: Uruguay vs Romania 0-2 (actual result was Uruguay 4-0 on 7/21/1930)

The first goal was scored in extra time at the end of the 1st half by Romania's Barbu with a hard drive into the corner of the net.

Romania scored again with a close range shot by Robe in the 66th minute.

In the 78th minute, there were exciting plays by Uruguay with rebounds and volleys, but the ball was finally cleared by Romanian defenders.

May 12, 2016
d10-5 Group 1: Argentina vs Chile tie 1-1 (actual result was Argentina 3-1 on 7/22/1930)

Chile's Chaparro scored in the 34th minute from a Free Kick as the result of a penalty for a late tackle by Argentina's Olandini.

In the 48th minute, a corner kick by Chile's Arellano led to a shot on goal at the goalmouth by Subiabre, but Argentina's goalkeeper, Bossio made an excellent save!

Argentina's Varallo tied the game in the 74th minute with a header.

Next are the Semi-Finals and the Final. Historically, these were the actual results, but I will be playing different matches, based upon the results of my previous games played for the 1930 World Cup (see the results above and also the link to the Soccer Replay games played last year for the earlier matches in the tournament).
Argentina vs United States 6-1 (7/26/1930)
Uruguay vs Yugoslavia 6-1 (7/27/1930)
Uruguay (final champions) vs Argentina 4-2 (7/30/1930)

Here is how the championship Semi-Finals and Final played out with my Soccer Replay replay. (No 3rd place game was played in the 1930 World Cup because Yugoslavia refused to play it, and the United States' team got 3rd place by default, so I am not playing a 3rd place game, either, although the semi-final teams are different.)

May 14, 2016
d10-6 Semi-Final: France vs USA 1-2
(actual result was Argentina vs USA 6-1 on 7/26/1930)
In real life, the USA's Tracey left the game at halftime because he broke his leg in the 10th minute (leaving the US team a player short for the second half (no substitutions allowed).

France's Delfour scored first in the 18th minute, but McGhee tied the game before the 2nd half in the 38th minute.

In the 62nd minute, the US scored the winning goal when Auld scored directly from a corner kick!

May 16, 2016
d10-7 Semi-Final: Romania vs Bolivia 2-0
(actual result was Uruguay vs Yugoslavia 6-1 on 7/27/1930)

Romania dominated the game, scoring 2 goals in the 1st half: Desu in the 27th and Stanciu in the 38th minute -- and almost scored again in the 74th with a free kick by Kovacs (the result of a foul on Raffinski by Valderama) which was headed clear by the Bolivian goalkeeper.

Bolivia's Bustamonte nearly scored in the 80th minute but the Romanian goalkeeper, Lapusneanu made a great save to keep the win.

May 16, 2016
d10-8 Final: Romania vs USA tie after 120 minutes 1-1
(actual result was Uruguay vs Argentina 4-2 on 7/30/1930)

A rough game with fouls committed by both teams.

In the 37th minute, a professional foul against Romania's Wetzer by the USA's Tracey results in a penalty kick which scores a goal for Romania.

In the 45th minute the USA's Brown scored a header to tie the game.

In the 2nd half, there was a late tackle by Romania's Steiner against Florie in the 69th minute. And in the 100th minute (in overtime), Romania's Wetzer was again fouled by Tracey in the USA's penalty area, but Wetzer missed the penalty kick!

Since the game was still tied after 120 minutes, a rematch was scheduled for the next day, according to the 1930 tie-breaker rules.

May 17, 2016
d10-9 Final: Romania vs USA 1-2
(no Final game rematch was played historically in 1930, but if there was, it would have been on 7/31/1930)

The USA's Patenaude scored in the 12th minute with a header.

Romania tied the game in the 28th minute with a close range shot on goal by Desu.

But 5 minutes later, the USA team took the lead with another header, this time by Gonsalvez in the 33rd minute.

In the 2nd half, Romania tried without success to score again, and the United States won the championship final 2-1!

========

Since I need one more game of Soccer Replay to complete my 10 plays for the 2016 Hardcore challenge, I decided to replay the 2006 World Cup final game between Italy and France which, in reality, ended with a Penalty Kick shoot-out (and I hate when that happens! ).

May 18, 2016
d10-1d10-0 2006 World Cup Final game: Italy vs France
(actual result was Italy vs France 1-1 tie after 120 minutes, then Italy won via a Penalty Kick shoot out, on 7/9/2006)

There were many goal chances and corner kicks by both teams and some great saves, but Zidane's swerving drive from the goalmouth in the 53rd minute scored the only goal of the game.

In my replay, France wins the 2006 World Cup championship!

So I finally went to one of the local game meet-ups! Better still, it was within walking distance! Even better than that, this was the first game I got to play, along with its expansions Eldritch Horror: Under the Pyramids and Eldritch Horror: Forsaken Lore. Abhoth finished us off just as we were finishing the second mystery, but that was entirely in keeping with the theme.

I really enjoyed this. I like the global scope and the streamlined mechanics. If I weren't already so heavily invested in Arkham Horror, this would be a must buy!

This is the other game I played at the meet up, with two other players. We had to call it a bit early, as everyone was heading off to a massive, local second hand game sale.

The randomized set up gives this one some replayability, but it suffers from a bit of a 'meh' factor, at least for me. Another Euro / Pointsalad. It's not bad, and I'll happily play it anytime someone wants to, but I don't think I'd ever ask for it or recommend it.

Because I'm very silly, I'd made an Avengers "Love Letter" game. So of course we had to bring it along to play while waiting for the previews/ads to start at Captain America: Civil War. Lisa won every round.

I was disappointed with the movie though. Which seems to be how I usually feel about movies lately. There might be a lesson for me in there...

Light on gaming this weekend.

We did play two games of Legendary: A Marvel Deck Building Game. Same set of cards; we lost the first play (playing co-op) and wanted a rematch.

Two games of Roll for the Galaxy.

And one game of Die Siedler von Nürnberg. Had not played this in a while. Its got some interesting twists on a Settlers game, but I'm not crazy about it. Its a very mean game, and there's a lot of competing for majorities where 2nd place gets nothing (while probably spending a lot of resources to have gotten 2nd place!). Its also a very "cramped" game - there are only 50 possible points available in the game, and a player needs 13 to win.

For people who really enjoy the highly competitive/very cramped feel, its probably a pretty good Settlers variant.

It uses a deck rather than dice for generating numbers; I don't feel like this actually helps the luck factor all that much. For example, in this play, we kept drawing the 6's and 9's early in the game. One player was on a 6 and a 9, and got a huge pile of resources early - which she promptly used to get on the other numbers, so that when they came up she was there to, while people moving onto the 6 and 9 later got nothing out of that run through the deck since they had already come up. That player absolutely clobbered everyone.

I've been slowly assembling the figures for this, and decided I had enough to give it a try; I just played a solo game as both sides to get a feel for the rules. Had to have stand-ins for a few models. (There's just over 50 figures in this, with several pieces each. Its taking a while to build it all!)

This is a game of a team of elite marines battling a horde of alien-human hybrids. The sides are very different; to give an idea of how different, the first scenario is basically a straight of battle. The marines need to kill 25 hybrids to win, while the hybrids only need to kill 2 marines.

In this case, the marines got to 24 kills, only failing to win because a tough hybrid made two luck armor rolls. Then the hybrids were able to kill their 2nd marine and win the game.

I enjoyed this. It's pretty light, but its fast playing and exciting. Its not as overall good as Space Hulk (third edition), but does a bigger variety of troops involved and possible more interesting genestealer/hybrid player play.

My first play of this in quite some time! I played the solo version, using the red taoist, and normal difficulty. I've beaten normal playing Yellow before and his bottomless pockets ability was invaluable. I've been trying to beat the game using red ever since, with no luck. I also used some of the ghosts from the Guard House expansion, though not the Guard House its self.

Tonight was no exception, though I don't feel I did badly. I was two ghosts away from the incarnation when I lost my last Qi and the game. I'm getting close to ninety plays now, and I still enjoy this beautiful, incredibly challenging game every time.

Still not sure how much skill there is to this (though Crossroads does add more choices!), but its a fun game anyway. Satsuki the orphan won, but not by much.

I've managed a few digital game plays including Star Realms, Ascension, Suburbia, Patchwork and Lords of Waterdeep, but Will and I managed to make it to our monthly game design meeting yesterday. Yay!

We played a new-to-us prototype of some designers who've recently joined our group. Very much liked it and most of our feedback was cosmetic graphic design, so they've definitely been working on it a lot when there's not much in the way of gameplay or mechanisms changes to suggest. I look forward to trying it again as they add a few things to it.

As for us, we got our next game to the table. In the Ruins is a archeology themed dice & card game with the focus being luck mitigation through tableau building. That may not be the best way to capture it, but you use dice to dig up artifacts, study them and then display them. You can abilities from artifacts on display as well as points. The person who has the most points wins the games as they've proven to be the best archeologist and they are approved for the grant money. I so botched that description, but I'm trying to type quickly and it's been since last year that we playtested it, so it's been a while.

Good news is that our partner Ben Haskett likes it and so he took the prototype and will do his publisher thing with it like fixing up the graphic design and make the next version of the prototype which we can move forward with getting the next level of feedback. If it goes well, it'll be the next one we Kickstart, next year.

I've missed you all so much, as well as missed playing games, but that's hard to do when everything is packed up. But we're settling in well and I hope to get it most of the way done by the end of the month.

And if any of you are interested, here's a pic of the Kallax shelves we bought and moved our games in before moving the rest of the way in: https://twitter.com/EuroGamerGirl/status/733724104981774336

I hope I'll have some more to post about soon as we're planning to get back to Imperial Assault at the end of the month. Yay!

We tried this for the first time last week. We really enjoyed it. Its a fairly simple worker placement game. But whats neat about it is that while you take turns, there are no distinct rounds where certain things need to be done. You place, move, add meeples as you want. When you use them, they are "exhausted" and then you can stand them up whenever you are ready. I think this game would work with any of our game groups since it seems like it would be less prone to AP.

We played this last night with two friends that hadn't played before. They picked it up really quickly and we all had a good time with it. In the final rolloff, I though I had just enough dice to pull ahead of the leader, until I realized that I couldn't roll a 6 on my final die, which was the green one which has no 6 laugh

Edit: Welcome back Sarah!

I got the 2nd edition of this game as a gift from Sapper_SB earlier this month. The solo rules are freely downloadable (and they also come with the expansion set).

I played a couple of practice games which I didn't finish due to the solo rules being holey and ambiguous in places, but managed to find the clarifications across several threads in the forums on boardgamegeek.

Here is a link to the updated 2.0 base game rules:
http://boardgamegeek.com/filepage/115774/ancient-terrible-th...

If you are planning on playing this game SOLO, I suggest reading the following threads:
https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/1487485/forgotten-secrets-r...

https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/1498990/solo-game-map-explo...

https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/1521503/could-someone-post-...

in addition to the official solo rules found in the expansion:
http://boardgamegeek.com/filepage/117820/ancient-terrible-th...

BEFORE attempting to play.

The game looks like it will be fun, and I plan to play some "whole" games solo soon.

May 23, 2016

Played 3 solo games and won them all fairly easily. I have posted a request for confirmation/clarification of some of the solo rules.

I forgot to mention that we finally just shuffled all of our Timeline decks together and played several games that way. It was great fun! It was great to get the variety. The one person who didn't really want to play it ended up being the person who kept suggesting that we play it again

I'm not sure that we'll ever separate the cards into their respective decks.
