When I was hosting SGOYT last year in June, TOS had just came out and was one of the European favorite (if not THE favorite). Lots of posts with lots of praises (including mine). Unfortunately, the game in its current distribution state cannot receive all praises it deserves. Last year, it was almost impossible to find out of Europe and even hard to find into Europe.

To celebrate the 2016 European Football (Soccer) Cup in France (June 10th to July 10th)
-
TIME OF SOCCER GIVEAWAY CONTEST

Having no intent to depart from my copy that I love to play, I chased a copy for this thematic giveaway.
The distribution being worst than ever, it took me quite some time to find one ... in Italy. The copy is new and in shrink.

------------

Edit 2 - June 3d : it seems many people don't read the section below. I'd like to highlight an important fact:

REQUIREMENT TO ENTER THE CONTEST: YOU CONTRIBUTED TO SGOYT

Thank you.

---------------

Some things to consider to enter the contest:

if you already own the game or don't want the game, you're welcome to join the contest, although you will not receive the game, naturally. I have in mind to find a soccer themed object, during the soccer cup event, to send to the first 'already-game-owner or do not want the game" as a soccer-fan-prize.

if you don't own the game and would like it, you will be running to win the game's copy.

you are a contributor to SGOYT.
Edit June 1th: it seems this sentence must be clarified: it means you contributed to SGOYT by writing, at least, an item. My apologies to those to whom it was unclear.

shipping
For the soccer-fan-prize
, I'll keep the prize light and will cover entire shipping.
For the game, I will cover the first 10Euros for shipping. The box is heavy (lots of components). The winner agrees to cover shipping remainder.
I had no time to check for international shipping fees. I'm considering using French postal services, except if I can find something cheaper that can track a parcel internationally (suggestions are welcome).

---------------

The giveaway contest

To fit sport's theme, instead of a simple drawing, you will do some matches forecasts.

You'll have to forecast the outcomes of the three matches between French soccer team and its direct opponents during the first part of the competition. To keep things fair, if you are French or live in France - considering you might have more insights on French team than international participants - you will forecast other nations matches in the same Group (see 3 matches section below).

Note : you do not have to be a soccer fan to participate to the forecast nor to play TOS.
It's NOT mandatory to know something about soccer to play the game, which is mainly a management game, although knowing the organization of a soccer team adds to the theme and charm. The game can be played by non soccer fans as much as I can play Baseball Highlights: 2045 without knowing much about Baseball.

-----------------------

The Forecast part

First, you'll have to forecast the outcome of each match : winning team or tie.

At the end of the 3 matches, we might have several participants who accurately forecasted the outcomes. To do a tie-breaker, you will also have to forecast the number of goal(s) - if any - each team will score during each match.

An accurate goal(s) score will give you 4 points, each goal's mistake (compared to the team's final score) will withdraw 1 point. See example at the bottom of this item.

If, after doing the "maths", we've still got a tie, I'll use a die roll to declare the contest winners.

Note and advice : for those who don't have the slightest idea of the average score in a soccer match, I'd suggest to do some researches before forecasting 17 goals to 9, which are highly improbable figures, if they were ever scored in soccer competition History ... Also, you'll find some informations on the different teams on the official UEFA website (see link below).

-------------------

The 3 matches

The Soccer Cup is split in two parts.
During the first part (qualifications), teams are displayed into 6 groups. In each group, each team will play 3 non-eliminatory matches. The first and second bests of each group will be qualified for the second part of the competition, during which the matches will be direct elimination, up to the finale on July 10th.
If you wish to learn more about the Cup, the teams, etc... here is the link to the official website : http://www.uefa.com/uefaeuro/season=2016/matches/index.html#...

France, organizing the competition, is in Group A. The other members of the group are Albania, Romania and Switzerland.

INTERNATIONAL participants : the 3 matches, you'll have to forecast, are:
June 10th : France - Romania
June 15th : France - Albania
June 19th : Switzerland - France

FRANCE - FRENCH participants : you will forecast matches, in the same group, in which France doesn't play.
June 11th : Albania - Switzerland
June 15th : Romania - Switzerland
June 19th : Romania - Albania

The deadline to forecast ALL 3 matches outcomes is June 9th evening (Paris time zone)

After the 3 matches, by June 20th (maybe later if I've got many ties to consider or other priorities - overworking - at that time) I'll do the "maths" and will announce the winners.

--------------

Forecast Example :

Let's take another match to simulate a forecast: UK - Wales. The match will take place on June 16th.

My forecast is:

RUNNING FOR THE GAME (or FOR THE SOCCER-FAN-PRIZE)
June 16th match
winner = UK.
Score = UK : 3 goals / Wales : 2 goals.

Sorry Ian ....

I would appreciate if you use this bold format to enter your forecast.
Likewise, please specify if you're running for the game OR for the soccer-fan-prize.

I expect to read many sideways comments under this item, it will be easier for me to spot the forecasts.

Example (following)

Let's say the match's outcome is UK = 3 goals / Wales = 0 goals.
Ouch. Sorry again Ian

My score for this match will be :
UK accurate score = 4 points / Whales 0 goal instead of 2 = - 2 points. My total score for the match = 2 point.

Hope you will have fun participating. Good luck.

mbmbmbmbmbmbmbmbmbmbmbmb

UPDATE : Time for entrant’s recap, so far (2016/06/07)

If your name doesn’t appear in the list, either I did a mistake (please, let me know by GM. I’ll correct that in the final list) or you never contributed to SGOYT (according to your profile)

Few days left to enter, if you wish.
I’ll publish the final list with all the forecasts after the deadline : June 9th evening (Paris time zone)

mbmbmbmbmbmb

UPDATE : TOS contest : entrants forecasts - 2016/06/10

I double checked, but you never know ... (if I did a mistake, reporting your forecasts, let me know by GM please.

First match : tonight 9 p.m (Paris Time).
Good luck to all.
Let the game begin !

mbmbmbmbmbmbmbmbmbmbmbmb

2016 / 06 / 15

Second match : tonight 9 p.m. (Paris time)

According to a large majority, France should score a win; the main interest being to know how many goals on each side. Or we might all have a huge surprise...

mbmbmbmbmbmbmbmbmbmbmbmb

2016 / 06 / 19

Current status before the final match :

Third and last match : tonight 9 p.m. (Paris time)

The quality of the game produced by the French team is pretty low - even if the won their matches at the end - and I mainly watched the matches untill the end, just to follow the constest's outcomes. I can't wait for tonight's match to know the final outcome.

Good Luck

Sorry - I can't participate in the contest. Until my daughters started playing last year, I knew nothing about soccer. I still don't know what off sides is. I just cheer for my kiddos.

I am currently running through my second game with this (the first was learning). I am now into the second civil war, and the first went quite well. I think I prefer one deck game as this runs a bit long with all three, but I will finish this one out. I like it.

I am trying to always rotate a solo game on my table in the basement. This one should finish up soon.

Well, the game box is on my table, anyway. The contents too. But I've been playing the game on the computer, using Keldon's AI.

I bought RftG back when it was new, planning to play it with my wife. But it looked a little complicated, so I bought the first expansion, thinking I'd teach it to myself first and play solo awhile. I did, a little. But then I got sidetracked, and the game just sat for years.

Now I'm back. And I think I'm starting to catch on.

If my interest holds, maybe I'll open the box and try playing Race for the Galaxy: The Gathering Storm against the "robot" again.

Played this about three times. First two times I messed up. First with player board actions and second with production mishaps.

Third time was a charm with the Appalachians where I won 50-43.

I really like how this game compares with Imperial Settlers. The use of contacts to limit activities works really well to balance the game. This is an Imperial Settlers killer for me.

thumbsup really enjoy the grittier theme
thumbsup contacts keeps resources from steamrolling out of control
thumbsup two expansions in the master set (use one at a time) improves replayability
thumbsdown sorting is difficult because they use words rather than symbols to identify the sets and the type is very small.

I got this one set up to play before I head off to work tomorrow. Not my favorite solo VPG but it is quick to set up and play. Also it has been awhile since I played it.

I did just get Dawn of the Zeds third edition but not ready to tackle that yet. Still reading through the rules.

I do not know much about soccer on the pro level. I prefer NFL football as my favorite sport.

I will be playing this for June. It is a recent purchase for me, and I've only tried two small scenarios to get a feel for the rules.

It plays quickly so I can get through a scenario in one sitting. The rules are relatively easy to get to grips with, but I need to get the most up to date version downloaded/printed. Lots and lots of status counters seem to nearly sink my ships, but I like the way a coherent narrative emerges.

Looking forward to trying some of the larger scenarios this month.

The Glorious 1st of June (1794) seems an appropriate start .

9. Board Game: Friday [Average Rating:7.20 Overall Rank:337]
I've been meaning to play this game for a while since I love deck builders, and one of the games that got me into the hobby was designed by Friese (Power Grid). As this was I think my 11th deck builder, I thought I was good at the genre. I was wrong. Six games later on the easiest setting, I have yet to encounter the pirate bosses, let alone beat the game.

I made some sceanarios for warhammer quest tACG in May, and hopefully soccer will not distract me too much from making more.

Speaking of soccer, I only have access to watch international soccer here and there, but support my local Seattle Sounders in MLS. While the level of play in MLS is not as high as the major European soccer leagues, it is improving rapidly, it is fun to support a local club, and it won't get better without support. Unfortunately the Sounders recently sold our best player to China, and have struggled this year as a result.

Excited to watch copa america that starts in a few days, but worried people are a bit too overconfident that the US will get out of its group. For Euro 2016 due to liking Irish folk music I will be cheering for Ireland, though considering they lost their 3 games 4 years ago by a collective 8-nil my expectations are not high.

I finally got around to making up a set of Maquis, I'd tried the android app but had no idea what was happening.

I've played a few games now, both physical and on the app. The game is really hard. Until this game, the best I could get was a very occasional draw.

I got in to work early today and played a game and I think I won!!! This is the first game I've won, though I probably did something wrong.

Planned to get a game in to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Battle of Jutland, as this is an event in the game.

I didn't quite get to play it on the day (31st May) as the clock had ticked past midnight when I started....... whistle

It was a good game. I used a couple of variants (to player advantage!), but I was still defeated due to a collapse of national will (officially a crushing defeat) with just 2 cards remaining......

First game for me this month is Fields of Arle, the sandbox masterpiece of Uwe's farming designs. A lot more open and a lot less stressful than his other harvest games (Agricola, Caverna, Le Havre, Ora et Labora etc) the game has been talked about as a labour of love for him, and it really feels that way (which is a good thing - the German version even came with a thick historical booklet on the area, which one fan is currently translating - it's a very interesting read!)

Loading Dock is still my all time favourite building, and as it came up in the mix again it was a must buy. I decided to focus more on buildings this time, and finished the game with more points in buildings than I have in any other session. On the other hand my points in other areas were a bit lacking, but that is the nature of an open ended game - you invest where you feel necessary. I also decided to invest in tools more than I usually do, but didn't capitalise enough on it by the end of the game - a lesson for next time.

Final score - 107. Not too bad a score

thumbsup Solid solo game, as it was designed for 1-2 players.
thumbsup sandbox design means there are many things to do and many paths to follow
thumbsdown farming theme isn't for everyone.

Still highly recommended

With a little time on my hands I decided to have a go at defending the kingdom. Semi-randomly drawing heroes, I ended up with Cleric and Barbarian, with the Epic Foe being the Fire Elemental (ouch - this guy is from the kickstarter mini-expansion that I got off BGG, and he looks to be a pain to defeat. If the desert falls at all, then there will be no hope of defeating him), and medium difficulty level. Locations were semi-randomly setup, and then we were ready to go.

The first cycle of the deck had the bulk of the attacks distributed between the Ruins, Plains and Desert, with all 3 enemy cards coming out before I had an opportunity to move my defenders. That's not too bad I reckoned - makes keeping them in check a little easier. Unfortunately things went down hill from there.

First Dire Enemy was the Wraith (Ruins), turning up at the end of the cycle, when I had no one there, and the defenders on low health. Second Dire enemy was the Sea Serpent (Coast), shifting my defenders off their designated locations, and leading to the Ruins getting overrun. The fall of the Ryuins spelled doom for the capital, and the continual onslaught saw the Capital fall a full round and a half before the Epic Foe even arrived.

Outcome: Defeat

Ah well ^^

Oooof! This is a tough one. Managed a win, w/ a friend & on our 1st play, vs. Rhan-tegoth. So far though I'm 0-3 vs. Rlim-Shaikorth. Trying to balance adding storm markers w/ completing the adventures & trying to get gear for part II is quite the task. Though having a 100% solo-fail rate counts for something, right?

Enjoying this expansion. The special adventure cards add a way to mitigate the time track which is a nice(necessary?) out. I'm having a tough time finishing Heart of Darkness- the final extra adventure though. The Ancient Ones included are sufficiently prickly. The overall challenge is high, for me at least, and I'm looking forward to experiencing all the new adventures.

I decided to leave this out after my last play. I set it up again before I went to work so I could just start playing when I got home.

Decided to play a merchant on this go around, using the excellent solo variant in the games file section. It has you make a event deck of 15 cards as a timer, and you can't earn glory by stashing gold.

I won!

It got a little dicey in the middle of the game as I had Blackbeard and another pirate chasing me down at the same time. Luckily I had a glory card that allowed me to evade Blackbeard, and I was able to flee the smaller sloop.

The game ended with me doing a mission to deliver a governors daughter across the board. When I arrived in the Havana sea zone, my missions destination, a pirate sloop descended on me.

We exchanged a few shots, and I started to get the upper hand. The pirate decided that the fight would not go in his favor and attempted to flee. I was having none of that. I relentlessly pursued him and sent him to Davy Jones Locker, earning my ninth glory point. Completing my mission was my tenth and victory.

thumbsup Love the theme. Age of sail has always been an interesting subject to me.
thumbsup Once I have the rules down it flows pretty quickly.
thumbsdown There are a lot of combat rules I have to keep re-checking.

I've been playing a lot of Onirim and Sylvion recently. I'd say I play at least one of them most nights of the week.

Onirim.
Last night I played a couple of games with Steps and Glyphs - so basically having to find 12 doors in a row - and it's really tough. I have done it in the past but nowhere near last night. I seem to find I have to move through the deck a lot in the early stages when I'm not getting the cards I need and can't afford any spells!

Sylvion.
I'm slowly progressing up to the higher levels in this.

The other night I beat the advanced game with the betrayals expansion; and I realised I forgot to even use any of my single use powerful cards! Also discovered the powerful combo of a deck with a fair few fish and owls in it - I was able to draw up over half my deck several times in the game and absolutely destroyed he elementals.

Anyway last night I was feeling cocky so added in the pawn to try that. I'm not sure if it was the cards I drafted or the elemental but I lost. It was very close and as I played it I ended up with 1 damaged forest card at the end... It was either taken more damage or use my deluge of elephants (which according to Shadi doesn't allow you to draw cards from destroyed fountains... If only I had one more tree).

Castellion
Castellion should be arriving in the post today!! I'll be sure to post a few plays

thumbsup I really love this whole family of games. They are so fun and each is unique.
thumbsup Quick to set up
thumbsup Look amazing

A Remarkable Pacifist Draw At Rouke's Drift!

I followed my usual tactics when playing this game: get the barricades constructed as quickly as possible, move mountains to remove any -1 DRM even if it means leaving a building on fire at night, and unless cards are desperate then get the Reserve Platoon established early.

So far so good. The Reserve Platoon bit proved tricky because I didn't draw the officer that allows you to ignore the hand limit (apologies, I can't remember his name!), which is always a nice card to get early. He never actually made an appearance in this game. Nevertheless once all the barricades were built I was able to get the Reserve Platoon established.

The storehouse was set on fire fairly early on but I was able to put that out and I got lucky that it caught fire again almost as soon as night fell. My plan to try and extinguish the fire towards the end of the game was thwarted by the Seniority Debate chit which returned most of my leaders to my hand. It was closely followed by the Relief Column to bring the game to a close.

The remarkable thing about this game was that I survived without inflicting a single casualty on the Zulus! I rolled such a ludicrous amount of 5s that I was able to keep all the iButho away. The closest the Zulus reached was the 0 space where the Reserve Platoon were waiting for them! The few times I did roll a 6 was when I had a -1 DRM before dealing with low ammo or before the storehouse caught fire at night.

So despite surviving - a rarity! - I only managed a paltry 23 for a Standoff: the only points added to the 20VP for the Zulus not reaching the Victory marker were 2VP for the hospital not being on fire and 1VP for a non-medal Hero in play.

A truly awful display of British marksmanship for the annuls of history. Sadly a significant amount of wildlife, mainly passing birds, were killed on that fateful day. One member of the inDluyengwe iButho got a nasty graze on his knee while trying to avoid being hit by a falling vulture that had been slain by British rifle fire. The only VC of the day went to Private Clarke, the cook, who after the fighting created the most fabulous stew from all the dead wildlife. Someone had to get a medal for something!

My goodness I always have fun with this game!

thumbsup This game always creates interesting stories.
thumbsup The small footprint (I have the zip lock edition) and quick play time make it extremely portable.

thumbsdown Like most SoS titles there is an element of luck involved. This particular session report should nicely illustrate this point!

Well my first attempt at Marty's challenge did not go as planned (although it did go as expected). I lasted 1 whole turn before Cole started bleeding-out. Marcus revived him but 2 turns later Marcus started bleeding out. He managed to crawl to Cole, who had found the helicopter in the first location, before the entire horde charged in to attack Cole. He didn't last long and both were bleeding-out.

Scores:
Drones (3) = 9
Wretches (1) = 2
Ammo = 10
Total = 21

blush I was just about to submit this when I realised I had set up the first location in reverse shake Good job it wasn't a high score.

Well I'm glad I changed to the correct layout for my second attempt shake

I did even worse this time. I only managed to make it to the second room of the first location. These attack dice are way to deadly and people complain about the die in Space Hulk: Death Angel – The Card Game. I may have to leave it for now and come back to it next week.

Scores:
Drones (1) = 3
Wretches (1) = 2
Ammo = 11
Total = 16

thumbsup - Really enjoying this game so far.
thumbsdown - The dice are too strong for the berserker.
thumbsdown - There is not enough room in many areas for berserker or several smaller locusts.

Just received this as a birthday pressie so was keen to hit the table with it.

Lotr TCG is a well respected deck-builder with superb theme running through it.

Over Hill Under Hill is the first of the saga products for the set.

These sagas replicate the events of the books of The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings within the TCG. This particular saga is centred on the adventures of Bilbo Baggins and a bunch of Dwarves

All the usual suspects are included; Gandalf, Bilbo, Lots of Dwarves and of course the protagonists; Trolls, Goblins, Gollum etc. A special set of items, Treasure cards are also included. This means you can obtain Sting, Glamdring .et all; to supplement your deck building in later scenarios.

The first and third quests have interesting mechanics to make them seem more like the real thing than just another quest. The one with the trolls is by far the most difficult, but is also pretty short.

The first scenario and the one I played is We Must Away, Ere Break of Day.

Here Bilbo and crew must outwit the very BIG Trolls and avoid getting tied up in sacks and subsequently eaten.

My deck was the one recommended in the saga rulebook and had the heros Gimli, Tharin, Ori and Bilbo.

The scenario is quite challenging as the Trolls are triggered all at once and can easily overwhelm you if you are not careful.

Which is exactly what happened to me!

Time to try again later today!

thumbsup Great theme
thumbsup Rewarding game play
thumbsdown Need to invest in the base set and can get expensive real fast!

So, does anyone else ever get to this stage and then think, "You know what - I can't be bothered"? Been waiting for a few hours of peace to get this out and relearn it... and having put it out, I'm craving something a little more immediate.

Sigh.

Inspired by the newly announced 1PG Bowling League and by Koinskyz sports games theme for June, I finally looked into this game despite having read IzNibz & Ian's many postings of it over the years.

What a great game. I scored 130 which funnily enough was my average way back when I used to bowl regularly. A LONG time ago.

So simple but very clever at the same time. I love the way the rules cleverly and simply implement the cascade of pins. With only twenty playing cards. So clever. So simple.

In the game you select a single card (from one of the three ball piles) to knock down 1, 2 or 3 pins.

To be able to knock down pins the total of the cards representing those pins must add up to a total that has a final digit that is the same as the value of the single card you selected for the turn.
E.G. A player selects an 8 card from one of the Ball Piles and therefore needs to try and make an 8, 18 or 28.

The back row pins cannot be knocked down on the first turn of a frame and the central pin cannot be taken out on its own on the first turn of a frame.

On future turns any new pins or pin combos knocked down must always have at least one pin that is adjacent to a pin or pins that have already been taken out. This is the clever (but simple) recreation of the cascading effect. EDIT: Once you clear a spot, all remaining turns have to start adjacent to a previously removed spot and the pins targeted have to be adjacent to each other.
(For more detail take a look at Sid Sackson's Bowling Solitaire - A Detailed Review.)

Time for a little interactive fun as a little indicator of the gameplay.

EDIT: I used give you the following ball cards (you choose the order you use them) to get a strike with the pins in the photo below: 4, 4, 6, 7

How would you do it?

Remember - it is 3 pins maximum per ball card, back row cannot be targeted with the first ball, all subsequent pins or pin combos must have at least one pin adjacent to a pin that was already removed, central pin cannot be removed on it's own on the first turn.

Use spoilers below so others can join in and I will add my spoiler later on.

Have fun - at least I can check whether I'm playing it right. whistle

EDIT: Good job I did check as I was playing wrongly - so here's a link to an instructional video.

While I have played other board games alone, this is my first game designed to be played by solo.

I have always enjoyed WWII sub PC games (Silent Hunter), and so I thought I would pick this one up. So far I love the game. It can take a while to play a full campaign (4-5 hours) if you are not sunk, and there is a lot of dice rolling involved.

The major issue with the game are the rules. Unless you are on the BGG forms, or search the Internet, you are not going to know about the official game erratas, the third one just came out May 24th. One of the major issues in the rules fails to mention on your paper log a patrol takes two months plus at least a month to refit the sub. The rule book makes it look like a patrol is one month plus the refit. This can lead to playing more missions than would be historically possible.

Even with the rule issues, its a great game if you enjoy sim type games.

So in an effort to not be a bad teammate I wanted to practice my bowling skills some more.

Plus I knew this was right up Cindy's alley.whistle She was interested as soon as i started playing. She asked some rules questions and searched a you tube video because I wasn't clear enough. 14 years and counting and what makes sense to me and how I tell it is not what makes sense to her and how she hears it. There could be a whole other geeklist on that topic though.

I played 8 frames and she helped on about 5. I finished the last two this morning while Sam was eating her oatmeal and talking to me. She started counting combos too so it was definitely a family effort. Scored a 144 so my average has climbed to 135.

Also I just wanted to make the first page this month.

Started June off with another run through of Uwe's crazy (in the sense of so many options) worker placement.

I never particularly go into a game with a preconceived notion, but this time the anytime buildings Carpenter's Workshop and Colonist's House called to me. This meant I needed to focus on animals. I managed to end with three stables and 8 horses, 8 cows and 9 sheep. I also managed more travel than usual and built the Castle and two blue buildings. In contrast, I only used the Master space once and query whether it was worth it!

This felt like a good run through and when I counted everything up, I had managed 121.5 VP, my best yet.
