Just arrived from KS. So far I've only played the basic game but some of the variations look interesting. Looks to be best in partnership. We only played a 2 player game so far so I'll update my opinion when I have a chance.

Other new things in my life a new game shelf for cardgames!

My new copy of the latest game from the Ragnars arrived! But I am away all week on a business trip. So it will be a bit before I can table it. I am always keen to see what the Ragnars release. This one might be the start of a category of games. It states it is their first "Quantum" game. Perhaps they have sibling games intended?

What's new is the beginning of the Meeples Choice Awards process!

This is a Games of the Year award I supervise every year for the Spielfrieks user group. I say "games" because the twist is we pick our three favorite games of last year. We're just getting ready to start the first round of voting. One exciting new thing is that we should have our own tailored voting application, coded for us by the very talented Wei-Hwa Huang.

Several Eclipsers help us out by participating each year. If anyone else is interested, all you have to do is join Spielfrieks, by sending an email to spielfrieks-owner@yahoogroups.com.

Guilds of London is Tony Boydell's latest creation. His last major Euro,Snowdonia, is one of my absolute favourite games. Guilds of London is looking like a winning game after picking it up at the UK Expo and having had two enjoyable plays. The first play was good, though in that game you are working out what all the various icons and cards mean. On the second play it moves smoothly and fast. There is a wonderful tension in the game provided by the neutral Liverymen, these guys have been lambasted by Rhado as being 'mean'. They are not mean, they are part of the gorgeous stress and feelings of gentle hostility the game creates.

Whilst not in the same suoer-league as Snowdonia I still think this will be around for some time to come.

And Tony, the designer, also writes the funniest and most creative daily gaming blog here on BGG. The man has a very creative mind which just doesn't stop thinking and working.

As Peter beat me to Guilds, I will go with this one.

It's a Time Travel game that actually has a time travel feel to it, unlike Steam Time and Temporum to name just a couple.

At the heart of the game is three rounds of play, which is the players playing the same day three times. One the first day you play three cards, on the second day you play the three cards you played on the first day in the same order and also three new cards which can be played before after or in between your original three cards.

You can probably guess what happens on day three. You play the six cards you played on day two in the same order and insert three new ones. This can be quite tricky as a card you wanted to play on turn one often does not look so good on turn three.

A word of warning, this game paralyzed two of our players. Both of whom claimed they did not usually suffer from AP. I know one of them quite well and can confirm that that is the case.

I had some bad news at work, one of my team mates has resigned and leaves next week. What is so bad about that? Well for at least a while, instead of being on call every fourth week, it will be every third week. So less gaming.

Currently in Santa Clara for work. And I played the invasion game for Race: Xeno for the first time last night.

Ironically, the day after hearing a comment at another table suggesting that the game would be better with Wei-Hwa in the box, I actually played the game _with_ Wei-Hwa. He was not, however, in the box, but instead carrying the box.

I'm going to do these one by one, as I haven't been participating like I should so these will make up for it

We really liked Agricola revised edition, noting that we are not hard core Agricola players. My two friends who are hard core didn't like it as much. The cards seemed balanced, we liked the extra addition to the board, and it played a lot faster than what we remember. I sold my old copy of Agricola, the only way to play that one fairly was to draft, and the game isn't high enough rated for me to take the extra time.

The jury is still out on this one for me. I've now played it three times and I'm still not sure if it is a keeper because it doesn't really engage me. On the other hand it does have some interesting mechanics so I guess I'll play it again to see if I should keep it.

My issue with it is an issue I have with a lot of games. While yes the mechanics are interesting they don't really interact in an intuitive way and I think that's what's keeping my enthusiasm dampened. And there's no theme tie in whatsoever, I mean none. So there aren't really hooks to keep me going.

I've enjoyed screwing around with people playing this game. It has a once around auction, so if I'm not the last player, many times I'll jack up the price just to make the last player squirm. It's amusing (yes I have a mean streak on occasion) to see the last person try to figure out if I'm serious or am I just messing with him.

It's also a good game I'm liking it very much. Refreshing to see an auction game where the auctions don't cause significant downtime.

I'm not sure that this is a keeper as the drafting isn't that engaging in the expert version. It's pretty multiplayer solitaire and there are better multiplayer solitaire games that I own (like Ora et Labora).

This was really interesting as a two player. I haven't played the original game in ages, so I'm not sure if the sand boxy nature of the game is also in that game, but it was unusual not to have an immediate goal when we started. Most games solve that with hidden objective cards, but you're sat down in the middle of the My Village sand box and told to find more points than your opponent. That's it. There's a lot of points to be found, and there's also hate drafting of the dice (hate drafting is a term from Magic the Gathering where you draft stuff to deny your opponent stuff), if only to cut down on the combinations available. The dice drafting is like Troyes but with more dice and I like that. I also like the inclusion of 'bad' dice, where you take a penalty (or can be offensive!) using the black dice. If you are trying to keep your guys alive, then you really have to consider whether or not you want to hasten their deaths by using the black dice.

The more I thought about the game after we played, the more I want to play again. We didn't play optimally the first time, so the second time through should see a good look at the strategy.

Finally got my hands on this, and I really liked it. The not-much-talked-about-but-keeps-producing-the-hits designer Simone Luciani was co-designer on this game and it shows. I felt there were a number of ways to win, yet the game is pretty tactical, which I like. I'm shocked really that there's no US publisher, I wonder what's going on there. I like the replayability that the various boards give, Marco Polo could have used that as well. We only played two player, but I'm sure the game would shine with more.

Definitely a keeper.

Here's everything for the last 3 weeks or so. 2 conventions, and a few others.

BGG.Spring!

N/A   Race for the Galaxy: Xeno Invasion NEW!
 N/A   BUS NEW!
 N/A   Karuba NEW!
 9   Indonesia
 N/A   Imhotep x2 NEW!
 8   Glory to Rome
 N/A   Garbage Day x3 NEW!
N/A   Watson & Holmes: From the Diaries of 221B NEW!
N/A   Warhammer Quest: Silver Tower NEW!
 N/A   Siesta NEW!
 N/A   Port Royal NEW!
 N/A   Mottainai x2 NEW!
 10   Power Grid
N/A   My First Stone Age NEW!
 N/A   Mmm! x2 NEW!
 N/A   Leo x2 NEW!
 N/A   Dead Man's Draw x2 NEW!
10   Twilight Imperium (Third Edition): Shattered Empire

I thoroughly enjoyed BGG.Spring. I've never attended BGG.Con without friends. My first time going, I went all by myself, but then ran into several people I knew when I got there, so I've never really had the solo feel. Although we did manage to welcome some new people to our games, and help them enjoy the convention. One of the did a good write up here:

BGG.CON Spring 2016 - Games Played

The Spiel des Jahres games were novel. The kids games made for great late night entertainment, especially when someone started live streaming our game of Leo on periscope, and the pressure was on to perform! I can't remember if we won, but it was entertaining.

The highlight was the friends I played with, but after that, Indonesia and Twilight Imperium made for great times. I taught both, and teaching Indonesia at BGG.Con might become tradition. Although with the reprint, perhaps many more people will already know how to play.

Salt Lake Gaming Con

 8   Mysterium
 10   Brass
9   Race for the Galaxy x4
 9   Lewis & Clark
 8   Glory to Rome
 7   Carcassonne
 8   Railways of the World
 9   Hive x4
 8   The Castles of Burgundy
 N/A   Blood Rage

SaltCON sponsored the board game area for the Salt Lake Gaming Con, and as such, I was called upon to manage the game library. I got enough volunteers that I was able to play a lot of games. Mostly favorites.

I brought my kids for a day, and they were mostly interested in the video games. They were overawed by the Occulus Rift virtual reality system that they got to try, and they are already making plans to combine their Christmas lists to get one. (They won't, that thing is still too expensive. )

There was another great moment there. Harkening back to my youth, my brother tells the story of when my family attended a fun center, and I was hanging out in the arcade. My mother knew I was in there, but didn't see me, among a crowd of rough looking teenagers (I was probably 12, or 13) and she asked my brother Joe to check on me. He wormed his way into the crowd and found me, in his words, "kicking everyone's butt at Street Fighter 2." That has become a family legend.

So imagine my surprise when I went looking for Annika, my oldest daughter, who is 12, and found her playing Street Fighter 2 at a retro gaming booth on the SNES, and according to the commentary of those standing around, "kicking everyone's butt" who challenged her. Proud papa moment. thumbsup

One other note, I finally got a good look at the Black Box edition of Glory to Rome, and can I say that it is terrible? Hard to read, symbols are poorly done, the whole game turns into a sea of gray on the table. The colorful first edition (which I own) is definitely my preference.

Family Camping

 N/A   Spoons NEW!
 N/A   Codenames

We also had a family camping trip, where my parents, brother and sisters and their families all got together in the Uinta mountains. I brought a lot of games, but Codenames was the only one I played. It's a fun game, but "best party game ever" is a far cry from my experience. It's one I only suggest because I think other people will like it, and it accommodates a large group, and easy to let players slip in and out.

Spoons is a family tradition, played with a standard deck of cards. Good times!

I've had a very busy time the last month or so, so I'm feeling good to not have any plans for the next few weeks. Hopefully I'll make it back to the local NUGG night, and get some other good gaming in.

Oh, back in May I was able to play Roads & Boats 4 times, 4 weeks in a row. It was great to finally be able to get several plays in, and see the different strategies emerge, and really start to look at the efficiencies you can develop. Great game! I'm going to pick another game for the next few weeks and see if I can get several plays in, to get that deeper exploration feel.

YOKOHAMA x3 NEW! Have played with 2 and 3 players. I'm not sure I'd want to play it with 4, could be too much down time and there is potential for AP. It's very interesting with the modular board.
Through the Ages: A New Story of Civilization
The Ravens of Thri Sahashri x4
YINSH x2 Anticipating the reprint of the Gipf Project we have played a few of these again
GIPF x2
Wolf & Hound NEW! Want to try the advanced cards. Cutest thing ever

Trick of Spy NEW! Not a deduction game but more of a wagering game, interesting and I had such bad luck in my guessing shake
