I've been slacking on my Top 10 list creations but fortunately I was recently inspired by another geeklist on WWI strategic games. Realizing that I had at least 10 of the 14 listed I've decided to publish my own take on the ones I found worthy enough to add to my collection.

I like gaming WWI, as I've perceived that there's less to deal with in terms of details such as unit types, formations, and politics. But the reality of the matter is there is no less amount of detail to contend with in games about this war over any other. You still need to deal with the planning, production, logistics, politics, and execution on a scale when it was harder overall due to lack of more modern technology.

Anyway, here's my take on good WWI games that deal with the grand scope of the war around the globe. No specific battles, no games unique to ships or aircraft, and no co-op's.

And remember, "It won't be over til it's over over there".

MY META-LIST OF ALL MY TOP 10's GEEKLISTS IS HERE: Something for Everyone!

I'm a fan of CDG's and this one did a top notch job in presenting the war in the west in that format. Still it didn't cover the whole enchilada but that was remedied with the follow-up Persuit.

This one rounds out the global experience of things when combined with PoG. Still, it's an exercise by itself focused on the Near and Middle East. Get this along with PoG for a near-complete WWI experience driven by card play mechanics.

Primarily this covers primarily the war in Europe, but the deluxe version depicted also throws in The Great War in the Near East so you can experience the whole package using the same rules set.

Despite some production and rules issues that have been cleaned up post-production, this one is touted as one of the best strategic games on the war. It certainly qualifies as a monster game on the topic.

This is a more recent entry into the competition. Despite the map colors (which I find make it easy to distinguish areas of conflict) I like the clean transport lines depicted on the maps. The politics allow for more free-form negotiations. But overall, expect to find a lot of details from specific leaders to named ships and flying aces.

This one gets a major facelift in 2016 and it's a monster. Lots of detail and full coverage of all aspects of the war. The only thing lacking is a "kitchen sink" counter but it would be hard to locate in the over 1600 counters that come with it. There's a bit of a sandbox aspect to this as would be expected with the WiF game engine. Things don't really need to follow historic lines and outcomes may be different than history shows.

Another one that I have a soft spot for due to it's low chit count and easier rules. It primarily covers operations in Europe over the course of the entire war. I guess I'd put this in the "retro" category given it came out in 1975 and I remember seeing it as a teen but never picked up this one until years later.

I love this game and regard it as one of the best Weuro's on the subject. It does a great job of depicting the tug-of-war in the different theaters. I should try to get this to the table more often as it plays quick and satisfies.

Der Weltkrieg series did a phenomenal job of breaking the war down into different theaters. But if you want to tie things all together and have a lifetime to play it all out, then get this game in the series.

And to round out the list, one of my favorite Ameritrash games on the topic. I've had great fun playing this one but don't expect a short game. On average it takes a full day of play with a full compliment of players. Expect to roll "buckets of dice", so a dice tower comes in handy as well.
