An Advanced Gameplay Review is all about the gameplay. It tries to give you insight into the mental process of a player after more than at least ten plays. I also try to make sure that it doesn’t get bogged down in rules minutiae or component talk. IMO, those are only interesting if the review provides gameplay context.

Most games on this list are either solo-only or soloable, because I mostly play solo.

I explain why this game design is properly tolkienesque. But not only that, the fact that it has grown over the last 7 years has actually made it such a game that if it was the only game I had, it would still be enough to keep me busy for years.

I hear March of the Ants is an under-rated game. The fact is, it hits the nail on the head on many counts :

1. Euro-style VP-salad, and yet not a beat-your-own-score solo game
2. An engine builder that plays in only 4 rounds
3. Euro-style game with a modular map
4. True solo
5. With the expansion, a new solo mode that completely renews the experience

In the spirit of its theme, it is an expectation-defying game. Advanced Gameplay Review - March of the Solo Ant

There might be a misunderstanding about this game. It's not maths-oriented. It's about budgeting and testing. Great educational tool.

As the title suggests, I didn’t have anything bad to say about the game... Shame on me.

I would describe it as “deck-building with a micro-managed timer.” Lots of character combinations make this a very replayable game with an interesting learning curve.

Fast-playing epic with a cool end-game à la Galaxy Trucker and great storytelling potential thanks to the interesting character system (exactly one good and one bad characters per player).

The gameplay is just as unique as the historical theme. If there was only one game that would justify an “Advanced Gameplay Review”, Navajo Wars would be it.

I wanted to try a hex-and-counter wargame. This is not exactly the game an experienced wargamer would think of first when you say “hex-and-counter wargame,” but I wasn’t disappointed.

This review is a thank you to the designer. After spending some time with the game, I had so much to tell, I think it shows.

Would Napoleon play this game ?

I got this one because of its infamous difficulty. I like a good challenge, and I was a little let down by Dawn of the Zeds (Second edition) in that regard. After about 10 plays, here’s my report :
