What is #GenCantSoloCon?
It's the biggest four day solo-con you've never attended at GenCant.

Where do I learn more?
Right here: #GenCantSoloCon 2016

How do I participate?
Want to share with the rest of the con attendees about your games, successes, and horrible defeats? Want to share in the GenCant Solo Con experience with everyone else? Want to win prizes, fame, and fortune?
Well, all the details about the prizes are on the other geeklist. But if you want to share with the world what you've been playing at the GenCant Solo Con, post it here.

Hello, all! I'm really excited to be back for another GenCantSoloCon. It was a lot of fun last year, and I expect it to be even more fun this year. I've got a lot more time on my hands this year to be much more involved and play more games, so I'm really excited to the convention doors open.
I've personally got a few games that I'm excited to spend some time on and still haven't. I've played the (only cry) campaign in the box for Warhammer Quest: The Adventure Card Game a couple times through now, just so I could play with each of the characters and the two expansion characters. The delve quest looks inordinately long, so I may try looking around for some fan created quests. (Any suggestions from other con-goers?)
But I definitely am going to be getting in some plays of Imperial Settlers. We've already reviewed it on the podcast, but I still haven't played through the campaign mode for the game (with the extra rules printed off Portal's website). I've got the rules and the game now, so I'm going to try to play through the whole campaign on Saturday (euro day).

What are you guys playing and excited to play? Let the world know. I've only got the two games "scheduled" because, in the past, I've seen people talking about other games and decided I wanted to play those too

Looking forward to breaking into a long pick up and deliver flight across the galaxy. I love this game but it's a real tough sell with a gaming group that prefers the new hotness. Makes for a real fun solo.

This will be the second year for me in the GenCantSoloCon. Last year was pretty fun playing alone-together with everyone cool
I'll be playing for sure leaving earth. Got it a couple of days ago and still haven't managed to get it to the table. After that I'm sure I'll get at least a play of Scythe (another new arrive), dawn of the zed third edition, hostage negotiator and my favorite Eldritch Horror goo
See you soon!

I plan on playing the six game Manager's Challenge of Bottom of the 9th during the Con. I'm also going to play Shadi Torbey's games (Onirim, Sylvion, and Castellion) in addition to learning how to play Friday.

8. Board Game: Warhammer Quest: The Adventure Card Game [Average Rating:7.56 Overall Rank:320]
I've been trying to work extra this week so that I can have the days during the con free, although beating last year's record of 72 plays seems unlikely if one of my friends draws me away to play Food Chain Magnate. Who knows, I can knock down a game of Race in about 10 minutes, and it is eligible for the last day so I might still be able to make a push.

The reason Warhammer Quest is my chosen game for this geeklist item is because I will be playtesting some more of my homemade quests for the game.

I also wrote some Matlab code to make the Agricola automa that someone posted in the Agricola's files a couple weeks ago easier to manage (13 decks is way too much to do physically).

Current Status
Total Number of Plays: 104
Thursday
Race for the Galaxy: 26 plays: L - W - L - W - L - L - L - L - W - W - L - L - L - L -L -W -L-L-L-L-W-L-W-L-W-L. Man I am rusty on this game. Sure I drew Old Earth a couple of times which is considered the hardest world to play against, but my two wins were just barely eking it out, whereas almost all my losses were blowouts. EDIT: Whoops, thought this would start at GenCon's local time, so some of my previous plays don't count and have been removed from this geeklist item. I played some more games of Race that I didn't submit entries for to make up for my plays before 12 am BGG time. Ended up getting the same overall record but in a different order, and my losses have been by somewhat smaller margins. Update 2: For some reason I do a lot better against the worlds that settle. Still barely scraping by. Update 3: Separatist Colony is supposed to be the easiest world to play against, but for some reason I do terribly on it. I mean there's not much you can do when it top decks both the 7 and 6 VP military worlds. Update 4: Finally beat Old Earth on my 4th try via Terraforming Guild and rushing cheap military windfall worlds by double settling almost every turn.

Seasons: 3 plays W-W-L Scepter of Greatness + 2 Ansung Longnecks to use it 3 times for the win. Been tinkering a bit with the Dummbot AI. I'm unhappy how on the highest level the modification to make the bot harder can actually make him easier, as if you can do enough card denial the bot won't have anything to summon.

Warhammer Quest: The Adventure Card Game: Homemade Quest Attack on Titan: 5 plays W-L-L-W-W I'm doing a quest where you have to have the boss be in a certain spot in your engagement slots, like how in Attack on Titan the titans are only vulnerable at the back of their neck. While it is making order of activation more interesting, right now damage is way too swingy, and I'm not sure I'm happy with how I incentivized exploration. Update: Still not my best designed quest, but looks like I tweaked it properly.

Friday
Samurai Spirit: 6 plays W-L-W-L-W-L second game took way too many risks with Katsushiro's ability and ended up having him die in the first wave. Third game Gorobei managed to discard 2 6's and a 5 with one of his kiai triggers, and from then on the game was basically won.

Warhammer Quest: The Adventure Card Game: The Thieves that Would Steal the Sun: 4 plays L-L-W-W. This originally started off way too hard, especially since the enemies I thought would fit with the theme the most were the level 3 ones, whilst the special rules for this quest makes it hard to just rush the endgame. I ended up increasing the length of the peril track and trimming down the number of locations needed to explore from 4 to 3.

The Siege: 4 plays W-W-W-W. Loosely based off of the 4th book in the Guardians of Ga'Hoole series. As the name suggests it has kind of a tower defense aspect where you are defending multiple locations from losing all of their progress. Had to increase the difficulty a bit while not making the beginning too swingy, and while I won all my games the last two were really close calls.

Ghost Stories: Nightmare Difficulty: 7 plays: W-L-W-L-L-W-L My high win rate is partially due to me choosing the powers that I believe are the strongest. I tried something I hadn't thought of until some guy who played the game for the first time mentioned: using the combination of the Hermit tie (-1 qi to defeat a ghost) with the Tea House( +1 qi, tao token and ghost). While you are surging the ghosts a lot faster, you are basically trading 2 actions and a weak ghost for a tao token and get rid of a strong ghost, which with blue's ability to also fight ghosts is quite a favorable trade. While I think the killing power of blue camping the Herbalist Shop is stronger, this strategy gives you more flexibility of dealing with things you don't currently have resources for, or ones with impending nasty effects. Afterwards, I tried using the blank tile as a proxy for the promo tile. While the scouting was useful for preparation at times, I am still adjusting to it, and it seems like the game is a lot harder if it replaces one of the tiles that I like to use a lot.

Saturday
Agricola: Interactive Deck Campaign: 8 plays 51, 65, 67, 71, 76, 81, 85, 89. Despite getting this game from a trade, my Interactive Deck was still in shrink, so decided to finally try it out.First game struggled to get an engine going not knowing how to use the new cards. Second game Layabout let me not have to feed anybody till round 7, + Fruit Tree & Chicken Coop minor improvements to get me 15 food and 2 points for very little effort. From then on, by keeping Layabout I had a ton of time to prep and basically always family growthed to 4 people as fast as the game would allow me, giving me a surplus of actions. Note that I made things slightly easier on myself by taking out the cards that have absolutely no use in a solo game, and might have made a few mistakes along the way. Also afterwards I noticed that there were some cards from the easy deck that had been packaged with the interactive which I played with, but definitely didn't try to use those cards to my advantage.

Agricola Automa: 1 play: 45. Tried the Agricola automa and while it was nice that it prevented me from just building up resources like crazy, it wasn't really better than the normal solo version per se. The thing is while I do like an AI that gets in my face, this one just felt random compared to the strategic blocking/draining of resources of another player. Therefore it doesn't lend itself well to a play for high score, because my high score can be really be affected by RNG besides my own skill with making do with my minor improvements/occupations. Also, the way the automa plan works out, it still felt like a lot like a solitaire puzzle because you can still figure out what the automa's actions are to some extent, only the puzzle is now more tactical rather than strategic. Might play it once in a while to mix things up, but not going to be a mainstay.

Star Realms App: 25 plays W-W-W-L-L-W x 18,-L-W. Oh god solo GenCanters, you do not know what you have unleashed by letting me count app plays (luckily Agricola keeping me preoccupied will slow me down for a while). I only have the free version of this, but have played over 1000 games since the start of the year. Since the easy mode almost never destroys my non-outpost bases, I make it a bit harder on myself by never buying them. That can be problematic at times though, as in one of my losses, the AI got the 4 money ship on their first turn, which allowed them to buy Brain World on the third turn to start scrapping their deck like crazy. Meanwhile, a bunch of non-outpost bases clogged the trade row, so I was unable to get enough attack to destroy the AI's bases. Afterwards went on a long win streak, but eventually could not beat by record of 23 (although that streak did not have the base-buying restriction I now impose on myself).

Sunday
Star Realms App: 5 plays W-W-W-W-W

Race for the Galaxy: 10 plays: W-L-W-W-W-L-L-T-L-W Got my largest ever victory, 60-34 vs. Doomed World while starting with New Sparta. I drew Drop Ships first turn to get enough military to put big military worlds out, whilst Doomed World's extra settles just fed my ability to place them out quickly (including one turn where Doomed World double settled, and I at 5 military top decked a 5 cost military world that gave me +1 military to allow me to play the 6 cost military world that I also top decked. Since Doomed World was settling for me I could consume trade my green/yellow goods for cards, playing 2 6-cost developments, while the bot only got one of their 9 point development chips out.

I'm hoping to play a bunch of print and play games and perhaps some 'commercial' (what's the proper terminology here???) ones as well. I've recently discovered Agent Decker (free to download from the game's BGG page) and really enjoyed it - a nice challenge, clean graphic design and good theme integration.

Thanks so much for organising Julius and Travis - I enjoy listening to both of your podcasts.

Looking forward to this. Enjoy everyone!

Alright, I ran through three rounds of the first mission, and what a blast! Each game could have gone the other way if it had lasted one more turn. I won my first game as the Soviets by 1 point, then lost the next two as the Germans, again, by 1 point.

During lunch at work today, I played a couple of rounds of Battle for Hill 218 on my phone, crushing the AI. It's too bad this app isn't on the App Store any more, I love this quick tactical game!

Well, I went to Gencon last year but moved a bit farther north to finish my schooling and cannot justify it this year so, why not join this as an excuse for me and the Mrs. to take a few games for a spin!

*Everything subject to being played solo in case of work schedule!*
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thursday: We will play some Lord of The Rings.

First play was a Solo game of Runebound 3rd Edition!
The equipment draw was sensational, I turned Lord Hawthorne into a damage dealing monster and even the glorious terror of Margath the Terrible could not withstand the onslaught!

Runebound was my first game since my wonderful girlfriend was called into work and I told her I would not journey into Middle Earth without her.

The girlfriend came home late from work but we were able to sneak in to round of Lord of The Rings LCG- We're playing The Road Darkens in campaign mode *her decision on where to start...* We were readily wasted the first game, but, thanks to hobbit ingenuity and much pipe smoking we squeezed out a victory and have finally crossed Bucklebury Ferry!!!

------------------------------------------------------------------------
Friday: Pandemic? I think its about time to dust it off and get a couple of plays in!

Got three games of Pandemic in! Two victories and one close but crushing defeat, mostly due to card drawdown sadly.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
Saturday: Possibly Pandemic some more? I might make this a free day for whatever games I want since I don't really have any other Euro's and many games to play.

Sunday: Elder Sign, still have most GOO's to defeat.

Well alright, first year participant and can't wait to give this con the best crack I can.

New to the shelves Frontiers will be front and centre. Card game? Sure, makes sense and I'm glad to be back in the mage knight system.

After that the slew of events will hopefully include Viticulture, Space Cadets Away Missions, A Touch of Evil, Shadows of Brimstone, Suburbia, Port Royal (w/expansion), and Xia with it's newly created solo mode.

Very much looking forward to the con and while I wish I could see you all there, it'd be very weird if I did.

Time to pre-register for the event. Can't wait! Had a lot of fun at last year's shindig. Expecting more good times again.

Peloponnes Card Game has been a recent hit at my game table, so that is the likely candidate for Card Day. Fun, challenging, and quick to play. Currently playing at Level 2, with one win and one loss.

And I hope to keep the good vibes flowing throughout the weekend.

A big THANKS to 1P-Podcast, LPC, and the sponsors for giving us soloists something extra special to look forward to every August.

Enjoy!

DAY 1: CARDS

Core Worlds: Got annihilated by the AI. And loved every minute of it. Lost 27-42.

Peloponnes Card Game: Followed that up with a solid win against another AI. Long live Pylos! Win 21-16.

DAY 2: CO-OP

Gem Rush: Played a two-player co-op session. Thought I was doing pretty well...until I added up my scores. Couldn't get out of the lowest victory level. Bummer.

Star Realms x2: Decided to try out the co-op rules for the first time against the Nemesis Beast. Dang! That's really hard. I got walloped in both sessions: -2 to 57 and -15 to 51.

DAY 2: PNP CHALLENGE

Mech Capture x2: Two plays of this fun, little game from this year's Solo PnP Contest. Lost 7-9, then won 12-9.

Elevenses for One: Another great solo micro game. And this time, I served tea to my Lady with a minute to spare. Cheers!

A Night in Deepwail Manor: And to wrap up my PnP Challenge, one of my faves. A fun, press your luck card game with cool theme and art. I didn't score so well though as my children were scared off in the second round. 33 (17+0+16)

DAY 3: EURO

Limes x2: Nothing screams "Eurogame" like a themeless tile-layer where you place meeples to score victory points...and it's so good! Unfortunately, I shouldn't have watched the Olympics while playing though, as I scored my worst two scores since owning the game. 57 and 50 (pro rules) blush

What a fun idea! My inlaws will be here this weekend, so I may not get any gaming in. We have a lot of activities planned (fun ones!). But, if I do get any play time it would be if I get up early enough on Saturday and play this (which is the euro day).

I will follow along as I can though. meeple

A little solo D&D and maybe some DC Deckbuilding Co-op variant on solo will happen Sunday night. Maybe some Dungeon Roll, too. Haven't played that in a while.

I've been meaning to break out my dry erase binder and get some solo games played, so this seems like as good an excuse as any.
