I've got some Vassal games on the go. Maria continues..

My French were roughed up by the Pragmatic Army in Flanders and I'll be losing a general this turn. It will be a scramble to stop the Prags from really pushing their advantage.

Over in Bohemia I scored a minor victory over the Austrians but I think they are trying to lure me out so they can use their Hussars to cut my supply and then hit me with a bigger, meaner army. I'm not having it.

We lost out warlord player but found a new one pretty quickly so this game will continue. I'm the government. The coalition spent all my money on soldiers that I can't afford to use. Time for light corruption.

We're starting turn 2. My English are aiming to subdue the Scots (no French intervention) and get cracking on murdering a string of women whilst trying for an heir. Charming stuff.

The Hapsburgs just moved a big kill stack to Metz so I think their war with the French is about to kick off. I fancy an irresponsible European war at some point so I'll be watching this one closely.

Soloing my first campaign. Daring fate to repeat itself, the Allies came ashore in the Dieppe area, gaining a foothold on two of the three beaches and losing two divisions on the third, failed beachhead. The Germans, in what seemed like good luck, drew a Motorized Reserve support chit on beachhead 1, but when the Allies rolled a 10 on the initial combat, it became clear that it was really a stroke of Allied luck, as the 12th SS was ground down and completely destroyed. The best strategy is to roll well, right?

The next few turns felt right, with the Allies slowly building up and grinding forward, while the Germans were able to make sharp counterattacks, getting within a hex of the Commonwealth beachhead before being pushed back.

Seen below is the end of the Allied turn 7, when things went sideways for the Germans. The Panzers to the south are weakening, but Hitler is happy enough that they can be replaced for now. The real crisis is that the Americans blew across the Seine, unhinging the German line and leaving no way to close the gap. The Germans will have to withdraw quickly in order to avoid a Falaise.

I am really enjoying how simple and smooth the rules are and yet there is just enough chrome that the game feels historically appropriate.

Playing the campaign game of this now. I quite like the system and think it works okay for early or late period WWI.

I'm experimenting with trying photo video DARs for this one, which I've been tinkering with for the past year or so, and I'll post them a bit later.

I made some house rules for the Stosstruppen, though. In normal moves they pay only +1 for exiting ZOC for the first ZOC, otherwise +2 like everyone else. In exploitation they pay only +1 for first two ZOCs. They pay only +1 for overrun in exploitation otherwise +2 like everyone else.

My opponent and I are working our way through the Spanish expansion now, as we tackle all the C&C scenarios in historical order. Throughout the series, I've been playing as the French and my opponent has been the various opposing nations. Surprisingly, I think I've found the Spanish to be one of the more difficult nations to battle against. Although my win rate is fairly high, every battle has been a hard-fought victory.

This game has been sitting on my shelf, unpunched for more than 2 years. With the new rules finally updated, translated to English, and posted, I'm finally getting the game to the table. I doubt that I'll be able to get a face-to-face play in this month so I'll see if I can adapt Stuka Joe's wonderful solitaire CDG system to this game. If not, at least I'll have some fun pushing the beautiful counters around the map.

So this is what I spent my weekend doing...

In an effort to keep up with getting all my unplayed games played I busted this one out.

I'll preface this with saying that this game is seven years older then me, and by some margin the oldest wargame I've ever played. After 30 minutes of trying to figure out the weird inverted CRT I played through the first five years of the First Punic War scenario. Here is how it ended at the start of 259BC.
From gallery of RAVENBURG

By the end of the fifth year the Carthiginians had taken control of the region of Sicily and blocked the straights of Messina but all of the fleets were now deployed on the map and were about to get swamped by the Roman Navy.

I had a lot of fun and would consider this a keeper to play through the full scenario or Second Punic War. The rules were a slog but they were mostly full of carefully described things that no-one gives a second thought about today.

Playing the Bloody Battle of Tilly scenario which has a lot of stuff packed into a small area. I'm not sure about the 8-9 hours quoted for playing this scenario as there is a lot happening each turn. GTS does a pretty good job of showing the importance of terrain and there's good narrative for each tiny battle over a bridge, hedgerows, or small village.

I finally wrapped up Empire of the Sun and have another game on the table. The copy I have belonged to a late friend of mine (Jim Maddox) who passed away ten years ago next month. I guess it is fitting I get it to the table in memory of him. I got to use my C4 counter cutter for the first time after I punched the counters out. Now, I am in turn two after doing a restart after making a rule mistake with close combat.

I haven't played this game in a couple of years and yesterday when I glanced at the game shelf, it beckoned to me. I played this game a lot when it came out in 1981. I would occasionally play three games in a row.
The five Mexican assault columns have a choice of six different entry areas. Playing solo, I draw chits to determine who enters where.

After placing the Texan cannon, the Mexicans decide their entry areas and then the Texan defenders set-up. I skimmed the rules and I'm ready to go.

I'm hoping to do a session report. I always say that with the best of intentions but it has never happened yet. No self-discipline!

and I played Stonewall: The Battle of Kernstown.

From gallery of jwquinn

The game's excerpt description:

This game is a grand tactical, regimental simulation of the Battle of Kernstown, March 23, 1862. The players recreate the encounter between Major General T.J. 'Stonewall' Jackson's Confederate Valley Army and Brigadier General James Shield's Division, part of the Union Army of the Potomac.

I wrote a session report. If any are interested, it may be found here on BGG at the following link:

https://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/1614277/aar-fun-challen...

We enjoyed the game and started another one immediately, switching sides. We are thinking we might do Pea Ridge: The Gettysburg of the West March 7-8 1862 next (well, Steven just bought the game so I am assuming that is what we might be thinking - ).

and I met up in Joliet, Illinois and played scenario 5 of Genesis: Empires and Kingdoms of the Ancient Middle East called "The Return of the Assyrians". This scenario is essentially the last 3 turns of the campaign game. With 3 players, Babylonia sits out and is off limits. The three active empires are the Hittites (Steve), the Egyptians (Joe) an the Assyrians (me) as determined by a random draw.

All 3 empires begin the game rather well developed and expanded, and trying to hold on to the territories they have won preceding the game's beginning and grab up a few more. The territorial control of the three powers meet in Canaan.

This is a good scenario to finish in one sitting, which we did. 3 turns long, but not a short game and with plenty of opportunity to do lots of things. Each turn is divided into 4 action segments for each player, the first determined by initiative and the final 3 determined by draw of a chit. So, each of my "3 turns" was divided into 4 action segments, each consisting of a major move, 2 minor actions and a recruiting action. In practical terms, 3 turns is more like 12 turns in terms of movement.

We had a good time with this. Things went my (Assyria's) way to a large degree.

One
From gallery of jwquinn

Each turn covers a century of time, so each battle fought really represent more a series of campaigns into an area rather than a single event. The Hittites suffered some revolts in their cities which slowed them down and, to a large degree, took their attention away from the area of Canaan. Both the Egyptians and the Assyrians took advantage of the situation and moved more power toward the center as well as built monuments in their home cities and walls on their frontier cities. The Hittites did as best they could in that regard. The VP level at the end of the first turn ranked first Egypt, followed by Assyria and the Hittites. I do not remember the exact numbers.

Two
From gallery of jwquinn

The Hittites again suffer bad luck due to an invasion of the Sea People which further sidetracked them. The Lybians invaded Egypt, but the wise Pharaoh had left rather strong garrisons in western Egypt. The invasion was stopped dead in its tracks. Both the Egyptians and Assyrians continue their building programs and conquering neutral cities. Then, toward the end of the turn, the Hittites suffer another invasion; this one from the minor kingdom Arzawa to their west. They take a Hittite home city and destroy the monument that had been located there. The Hittites attack but are unable to dislodge them. A plague sweeps through Assyria wiping out some peasants, but more importantly, lowering their manpower level. The century ends with the Egyptians still in the lead; the Assyrians second and the Hittites third.

Three
From gallery of jwquinn

The Egyptians are hit at the turn's beginning with a series of revolts. Seven Egyptians controlled cities attempt to throw off their Egyptian overlords. Egypt devotes the rest of the century to putting down the revolts. The Assyrians are able to attack into Egyptian cities on the frontier without fear of reprisal since the Egyptian armies are busy putting down revolts. The Pharaoh did send an assassin to kill the king of Assyria, but he was negated by the Assyrian appeal to Amun-Ra (its good to have powerful friends in high places). The three centuries of game time ends with the Assyrians passing the Egyptians and taking the lead by a good margin. Final score: Assyria 52 VP; Egypt 44 VP; Hittites 38 VP (as best as I remember... these scores are very close if not completely accurate).

I must admit the cards were much nicer to me than to Joe or Steve. I am pretty sure that made the difference. I do not think the Assyrians could have caught up with the Egyptians in VPs without that Egyptian revolt at the beginning of the final turn, and I do not think the Hittites would have fared as they did had they not been subject to several terrible events.

I think we all liked the game quite a bit. Joe said he preferred it over The God-Kings which we played a couple years ago and is somewhat similar.

Been playing through this one with my friend James. Got all the "tutorial"
scenarios done and are now playing the Big Ones. Yeah.

REAL gamers play with all the rules - God help us!

System seems to integrate very well. Play becomes almost second-nature
the more one gets into it. Kudos to all concerned for getting it this way.

No easy victories in this game. German AT fire is fierce and deadly.
British Arty - especially the 25 Pounders - can really mess up someone's
day. Stay the Sam Hill out of the Fields if you can. Yeah. Only BAD
things happen in Fields.

Hmmmm. Sounds Historical.

If you have played/liked Panzerblitz: Hill Of Death (Hill 112) and/or
Canadian Crucible, give Dauntless a go.

Right now the Germans have most of their force on the map, however accurate Soviet artillery fire and fire from the T-34s in the town have cost them 1 PzIV step and a couple of infantry steps.

This one is set up on table #2, where it's been set up for a couple of weeks. I really need to start moving the counters, and I've been busy with other things.

I played the intro scenario, now I'm doing a DIY scenario in the jungles. Right now my cat is winning because table #3 is the one that's not cat proofed and she likes to lay there. The beatings will continue!

On VASSAL table #1 is the Cactus Thorns scenario of WL, which is coming to an end. Right now it's a draw, I'm attempting to eke out an American victory, however the Japanese bombers refuse to spontaneously combust, even when I ask nicely. When this one wraps up we're moving on to the Coral Sea scenario.

VASSAL table #2 has this on it, I'm the Germans and we're starting turn 6 and I think I'm in pretty good shape. However, I haven't looked at the US turn 6 file yet!

VASSAL table #3 has this one, where I'm the Israelis and we're on turn 9. I've pushed hard into Syria, and could capture enough Syrian victory hexes this turn to guarantee a tie or (with a bunch of luck) a win. However, both armies are pretty beat up, but the Syrians seem to have more fresh troops coming and I'm facing the powerful 3rd Armored Division.

My opponent believes he may have pushed 1 turn too long in Israel, and that might be the case. It's my 1st game of HoC, so I'm not sure. It is startling how much more the Israeli flexibility is influencing things now that I'm in Syria. That extra exploitation phase is huge. And just the fact that virtually the entire Israeli army is exploit-capable while only about 1/2 (maybe 2/3) of the Syrian army is makes a big difference.

Fun game, I'll definitely want to play it again.
