VASSAL table #4 has the Mimigawa scenario of this one, which my opponent and I have been playing for quite some time with some long lulls. The latest one was me going to conventions, and him going to Japan on holiday and saying he'd be back in August. I said "don't worry, I'll have a file for you when you return." Hey, look, it's August. Guess what I haven't done yet!

VASSAL Table #5 has a 3 player game of JPTR in progress, we're in Spring, 1940. It's the 1st game for 2 of us. Me (Britain/USA) and the other Allied (France/Russia) player. The Axis player is more experienced, however he's had a rough go of it. He assaulted France and the Netherlands in Fall, 1939, along with Poland, however he didn't put a major effort into Poland, and it steadfastly refuses to collapse (although this may be the last turn it's that lucky). Meanwhile, while the Netherlands fell pretty easily, France has given as good as it got. Britain hasn't done much, partially because I've been building out the RN, partially because the French haven't needed a lot of help and I'm not at war with Italy.

I'm enjoying it so far, and it's working well with VASSAL, however there are a lot of rules to the game and I'm still doing a lot of page flipping as they aren't 2nd nature to me yet.

VASSAL table #6 has a live game played about every other Sunday (we were supposed to play yesterday and I was a bit under the weather). It's my 1st game of this, and we've only played a little over a year. I'm Jewish, so both sides are the bad guys as far as I'm concerned. So, I'm the Sassanid bad guys. I had a terrible attack in the 1st year, thankfully the Crusaders weren't able to press the advantage and I've recovered most of the losses. However, I made only very small gains against them (Gaza) in the 1st year, and more and more Crusaders are boarding boats back in Europe.

So far, so fun.

This is an old GDW game (1977) on the Battle of Dien Bien Phu designed by the great Frank Chadwick..it would be nearly 30 years since I last played it...

The campaign scenario is 55 turns long (each turn is one day) and the object is for the Vietminh player to take and hold every French strongpoint on the map while trying to avoid losses of more than 500 strength points..500 points is considered the casualty level at which Vietminh morale breaks (historically they lost 450 strength points or about 22 to 23 thousand casualties including nearly 8 thousand killed!) ..there are several shorter scenarios

Units are mostly companies for the French colonial forces and battalions for the Vietminh with other units representing heavy weapons such as howitzers and mortars provided for both sides..also there are 10 counters representing individual M24 light tanks for the French..

When the advanced rules are used airpower is included for the French..supply rules are kept pretty abstract in the basic game but if the airpower rules are used the French must supply their forces entirely from the air (about half of the French air units are C47s and C 119s) and the Vietminh forces are provided with anti-aircraft guns to help prevent this from happening..

From gallery of Atraxrobustus

The photo shows the game set up ready for the first turn with the Vietminh forces (red) poised to assault the isolated French strongpoint complexes of Beatrice (green) and Gabrielle (yellow)..the main French strongpoint complex around the airfield is circled in blue..the map should be visualised as a valley surrounded by heavily jungled hills (represented by the green areas)..the blue areas marked as swamps do not take effect until later in the game when the monsoons rains start

The grey cone shape fanning out from the end of the runway is the take off pattern for the small number of French fighter bombers and spotter planes that begin the game based on the map (as distinct from off map at airfields around the Red River Delta or on aircraft carriers in the Gulf of Tonkin)..it's bad news for those planes if the Viets can get a couple of AA gun units into that cone

Setup to play the first two-player scenario, playing two-handed as a wargame. Just to get the rules down, then will try the scenarios against the solo AI.

Interesting system, made to be quick to play (note squares vs. hexes with no difference in point cost diagonally or orthogonally. more to come.

This is a Jours de Gloire series game, based on the Triumph & Glory system, covering an 1811 Peninsular War campaign – specifically, Marshal Massena’s withdrawal from Portugal, and Wellington’s pursuit with a mixed Anglo-Portuguese army.

The game covers three battles, two small half-mappers and the three day-long titular battle. I haven’t studied the “Spanish Ulcer” much, and I’m eager to learn more about this long, bloody struggle which bears many of the marks of modern conflict, including guerilla warfare.

The first battle is Foz d’Arouce, 15 March 1811. It is a small-scale rearguard action in which Marshal Ney, commanding the tail of Massena’s army, is in the middle of crossing the Ceira River, which is near overflow and thus can only be crossed by a single bridge and at a small ford. Late in the day Wellington arrives, and seeing that Ney has foolishly delayed crossing one full division and a brigade from another, orders his two lead divisions, the Light Division (left column) and Picton’s 3rd division (right column) in a surprise attack as night approaches. The Allies had automatic first activation and drew the next two as well. Here is the situation early in Turn 1:

From gallery of DerTroof

The Light Divison has already used both its activations, but Picton may be able to close with Marchand's left flank before nightfall.

Although Ney seems to have his back to the wall, the Duke may have bigger problems, as this is only a four-turn scenario and three of the turns are night turns, when offensive operations are more difficult. The Allies will have to close quickly to achieve victory, which is won by destroying French units on the near side of the river, and/or possessing one or more VP hexes around the village (marked with blue bingo chips, currently in French possession).

From gallery of DerTroof

The Duke watches the attack unfold from a hill in the center.

In the actual battle the famed 95th Rifles infiltrated into the village and had to be driven out by a charge led by Ney himself.

From gallery of DerTroof

Look closely...it's Sean Bean!

The French ended up escaping, but suffered heavier losses than the Anglo-Portuguese force.

Played this for the first time face to face. Group of six. Played 6 hours and got to turn 4 before I had leave.

Was the Papacy and while I was able to get troops into Bavaria and Bohemia, I was only able to burn one heretic debater. My dice skills were poor to say the least.

Vassal/ACTS/Cyberboard is a great fix (like methadone) but the real deal is F2F with this game.

BRAND new to wargames, and decided to try this one out as our first go. My cube mate and I wanted a wargame would could play a turn or two of a day, as a brief distraction from work. We're on the 3rd scenario now and we're starting to get the rules down. Very cool theme. We're also finding it very hard to only do an activation or two, as we want to just play whole turns (or scenarios!). Super fun!

Sorry for the potato image, that board is so glossy, it's very hard to photograph.

I've currently got Vassal-mania but it can never replace my love of slowly playing through a solo wargame, just taking as long as it takes during spare moments. It's a lovely past time.

So I set up WTF1940, which I played earlier in the year and enjoyed despite getting a rule here and there wrong. It's not a complex system but there are a fair few little exceptions to remember and I don't always do that.

Anyway, I'm a couple of turns or so in and as with the last game I'm struggling to get the Germans over the river with any sort of urgency. It turns out I'm no Rommel, which is probably a good thing. It's a very nice, if slightly fiddly game, game though. The delayed combat results mechanic, in particular, is excellent. Top magazine game.

Simple system with certain strategy for both sides.

Some rules are similar to 1776 series. Cavalry rules need abit of learning to use them in proper.

Currently trying this game a few times. Very average feel for the moment. Will give a final evaluation soon if possible.

Just finished the second scenario with a narrow US victory even though I wasn't able to clear the village. I forgot how nice the programmed instructions are for (re)learning the game - great rulebook. My only gripe is that the hex sides are really hard to make out in the light/heavy jungle terrain (at least for my old eyes). I really like the addition of the Bushido rules which attempt to represent the tactics of the Japanese in the Pacific.

Our Monday night live-vassal gang is still running through the Barbarossa scenario of WIF. It's interesting watching three experienced wargamers who are new to WIF play this. I'm restraining myself from offering more than a limited amount of advice (and being the rules guru), and I'm realizing I have different assumptions and expectations (having played a lot of WIF) than Bill, Steve, and Doug.

Played the first two firefights last night.

I think it's the sign of a healthy system that the changes made to bring the system to the PTO are largely organic ones (new terrain chart, new damage chit mixes) and only a couple of out-and-out new rules.

Both of the firefights we played had unusual victory conditions that we struggled with. FF2 in particular is supposed to be an American attack to take a village, but the US starts with 1 VP and the Japanese can only gain VP by killing US units, so there is no incentive for the Americans to actually attack.

Overall a solid addition to the system, but as always keep an eye out on the firefight design.

Setting up this again after my War Room was dismantled so Junior Snr could stay with us.

Have a ftf play of this coming up so all good. Am probably more excited by this system than I have been by anything in wargaming for a while. More modules, more modules...
