After a morning game of Scythe, I decided I needed something really thinky to finish out the day. This game definitely fits that bill.

Played the short scenario (1965-1967) as the Viet Cong against the US, NVA and ARVN bots.

The first coup card showed up very early, only three cards in. This left a long sprint to the second coup card, which took until about card 15 to show up. By that point I was struggling to keep both the NVA and ARVN factions from crossing their victory threshold. The NVA in particular were a challenge as we had a large part of the country between our main forces.

Heading in to the third and final coup card, both the NVA and ARVN hovered just beneath their victory threshold. I managed to keep them both from winning at the beginning of the coup card, and pulled off a final score of VC +8, NVA -3, ARVN -4 and US -17.

Here is the scene around Saigon at the end of the game, where I had a significant presence.

This was my first time playing as the VC, interesting challenge and very different from playing as the US.

Been playing through this solo to learn the rules. It's a hard slog. Lots to remember, but absolutely satisfying so far.

and I are continuing our exploration of Confederate options in this one. We are on our 4th play of it. After our initial game (see earlier post in this thread) where the attempt was made at a more or less frontal assault on Prichard's Hill, the following options were tried:

Game 2
From gallery of jwquinn

An attempt was made to drive up the east side of the map. This would require smashing through the Union cavalry and 2nd infantry brigade rather quickly before the Union could react with their activation limitations. While the Union cavalry were decimated, the 2nd infantry held on and help arrived in plenty of time to stop the Confederates in their tracks. Back to the drawing board for attempt number three.

Game 3
From gallery of jwquinn

There is a north-south pike running up the center of the map just to the east of Prichard's Hill. The Confederates decided to try to run Cavalry and an infantry brigade up the pike The cavalry made it with no problem, but the slower moving infantry were caught in a vice between the Union 1st on the hill and the Union 2nd to the east. Again, the Confederates were unable to carry the day, though they did manage to get their cavalry off the north edge of the board for VPs.

Game 4
From gallery of jwquinn

This time the attempt was made to head toward Sandy Ridge on the west side of the map and then head north. Though a more historical approach, and though we are still playing this one, it is appearing that once again the Confederates will be stopped. They do have cavalry running around in the Union rear, but they are understrength due to an early lucky shot by artillery. The main Confederate force has made it to the wood hexes running east-west at about midway but are now blocked and outnumbered.

So, we are still in search of a solution. That solution might be in the Confederates rolling better than average, or the Union worse, or some combination. This is not to say we are not having a lot of fun with this game and the system. We are.

set up Sicily II on his basement table. I went over Sunday night and we have started the campaign.
I am playing the Allies and started with the invasion rolls. Most went well until I did the western US beaches where very low rolls lost ships and troops.

I arrived to see Nick had the game ready to go.

This should take a while to finish, but it sure looks like lots of fun to come!

Nick or I will put updates below as we play.

Finally ! This one reaches the table. Doing the fifteen-turn Drive On Mozhaisk (scenario 4). The 19th Tank Corps has ceased to exist, the 18th almost so, but the Germans have suffered heavy losses - two of the dreaded A2/D2 results from the Assault CRT. The German plan for this turn is to try to take Uvarovo and press up the highway : the Russian plan is to concentrate around Rogachev and hope to counterpunch. Only the fourth turn, but already it's looking dire for Germany.

Bosworth on the table, although this one has a bucket of dice resolution system which I realise I don't like at this scale. Tudor advance is a bit shaky at the early going.

Played a great game with . The game went back and forth. It started with me rolling horribly and losing ground, but finally started to make progress towards Germania. I made a move to retake over a fort that I had lost (I played the Romans) and I lost 3 legions giving some serious points to the Germanic tribes. Final score was Romans (me) 15 to Germania (Ken) 21. Had a great time even thought I lost.

I was reading something about Antietam this morning and got the urge to play something small and quick on the battle. This is the only Blue & Gray folio game I own. It was always my favorite because I'm more than a bit obsessed with the battle and although this is a very simple game, it does play with a reasonable resemblance to history.

The Blue & Gray quads were the first SPI Civil War games I bought back in 1975 and I recall how thrilled I was to get games on eight different battles.

So I set it up and this is what it looks like:
From gallery of No Expectations

I probably won't do much today. Will play tomorrow.

I have set out to play a solitaire session of Panzerkrieg: von Manstein & HeeresGruppe Süd. I own the Avalon Hill edition. I am going to start at the beginning, as that seemed like the logical thing to do, Scenario 1 - Kiev Pocket. Several thoughts...

1. Yes, the hexes could be bigger. I get that AH tried to shrink this game down a bit to fit in their bookcase format, but it's an awfully tight squeeze between counters!

2. No, I haven't clipped a single counter. Since I'm not sure whether or not I'm going to enjoy this game (the reviews are somewhat mixed), I've decided not to invest the time into clipping over 500 counters until I've determined if this is a keeper for me.

3. The scenario book that came with the game is next to useless for setting up the game. The maps appear to have supposed to have been in color but are printed in black and white, and the lines that are supposed to delineate certain conditions (including land from sea!) are difficult to read. Luckily, someone on BGG posted PDF's of revised set up cards that greatly improve the situation. Similarly, the original rulebook required quite a bit of errata, but yet again, another helpful BGG user revised the rulebook to incorporate all of the errata. If not for these two helpful geeks, this game might not have been playable at all!

- thanks June for the rulebook revision!

- thanks Yamazaki-san (publisher of the most recent version) for the updated scenario cards!

3. I have only the vaguest idea what I'm trying to accomplish with the Axis, who will be the aggressors in this scenario. So, I've done what seems to be sensible and have grouped my panzer divisions into 3-division stacks and plan to blast through the Russian lines and see what happens.

So far, I've completed the Axis set-up. Next, I will take another look at the Axis to make sure I'm satisfied with the arrangement, and then set up the Russians. It's a little odd to set up the attacker first and defender last, but that's what the scenario card says, so that's what I'm doing!

Just finished up two solitaire runs with my first ever wargame. The first session resulted in a Soviet victory with the Germans knocking on the gate but never truly threatening; and the second, when I actually bothered to apply the mud rules, saw them fair even worse.

Couldn't have asked for a better introductory game, though, and I guess I have you lot to thank for that, particularly for the in-depth AARs on smaller, simpler, shorter games over on his blog.

Another attempt to build up the East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere. Knocked out the Brits, but China and Mac were playing hard to get. By the Mid War deck I was firmly into resource management. That was actually working pretty well, until this situation greeted me:

Board Game: We Must Tell the Emperor

The sub campaign, with its bad DRMs for Oil, really mess you up. If Oil drops to zero, you can only use 1 action vs a Front each turn. that just isn't enough once the Fronts start knocking on the Home Island's door. ...and once you have a -2 DRM for Oil via the subs, you need a 5 or 6 just to get Oil up from zero. No good options when That happens.

The game ran on, through most of the Late War deck. Thankfully I hadn't seen B-29 Fire Raids yet, but Leyte Gulf, Battle for Okinawa and finally, Great Marianas Turkey Shoot did me in.

When I first went through reviews and videos for this, I was genuinely excited about the prospect of something relatively simple to get to grips with wargaming.

But as I picked up the box, I saw Richard III staring at me, telling me his game and all its extras would have longer legs.

I don't think I can say I made a bad decision picking up the earlier game, but I do wonder if I made the right one...

I picked up a copy of this at a convention here in Las Vegas back in March and the counter sheet was so badly blurred that it was unusable. Steve from Blue Panther got me a new sheet at CSW Expo, and now the game has been sitting around. It looks to be pretty fast playing, so I'm going to give it a spin later on because I'm bored today (and it's not like I don't have 3 other games set up I could be playing).

As a way of taking a running start at FAB:Golan, I brushed off Bulge and started a solo game. My German initial attack was an absolute disaster, so I may whittle it down to the tournament scenario rather than the full campaign. :-)
