You are once again invited to take part in the monthly Golden Turtleback miniature painting contest.

The contest has kept its original name in honour of its founder David Anderson (turtleback). It's usually run by Cerith Morgan-Jones (Bastion of insanity). I'm merely keeping the contest going until Cerith returns.

Please give this geeklist a thumb to help get it to the front page, and click on the images you thumb and give the actual images thumbs up as well !

The more contestants the better! New painters are more than welcome!

RULES

1) Add the game of the miniature(s) you painted as an item to the list. Insert the image(s) in the body of the entry. Use the format [imageid=xxxxxmedium] where xxxxx is the id of the picture.

2) The image you submit must have been uploaded during July 2016. Gallery images are okay but submitted images are preferred.

3) One entry per person. You may submit images of a single miniature or a group at your discretion.
You may, however, use either:
up to two 'normal' pictures of your entry, usually, the front and back of the miniature(s)
OR
one image of a montage/collage of your entry.

4) You are the artist. Please do not submit miniatures painted by someone else.

5) Make of the mini, scale and paints you used are appreciated.

6) The contest will end on 31 August 2016. The winner will be the picture with the most thumbs. Winners will appear in the next months’ list.

7) Users can thumb as many entries as they like.

In the interests of maintaining a level playing field for all entrants, if an entry does not conform to the above rules, it will be removed. New contestants will be notified beforehand so that they can edit their entry or submit another one that meets the criteria.

PRIZES

I'm reliant on tips to offer prizes. Any tips received will awarded as follows:

1st place: 35%, plus an exclusive microbadge! mb
2nd place: 25%
3rd place: 15%
Encouragement Awards: 25% (will be given to non-placing worthy entries with a bias to new participants.)

One random thumber will receive 5 !

Two heroic droids. I have elected to paint them as if they are in the middle of an adventure rather than in pristine condition aboard a space station so they look a bit 'knocked about' and weathered. Both could no doubt do with a nice oil bath.

Front:

Rear:

This pair was painted with Vallejo, GW, Foundry and P3 paints and Vallajo inks and GW washes. Star Wars fans will realise that according to the 'history' of the Star Wars: Imperial Assault period C3PO should have a silver leg rather than a red arm, but it's a bit of colour and the Little Fish like it so it'll stay.

Dark Stone Hydra - Shadows of Brimstone

This is one of my favorite models from the expansions for Shadows of Brimstone.
This is the first time I tried filling in gaps after a model was assembled. Also first attempt at custom scale patterns paint job ( Each Hydra head/body has it's own pattern). Took a lot more time than normal, also not that visible in the photos shake

But hey , I got it done in time for the contest!
Front:

Top down:

Miniature :
Multi part miniature from Shadows of Brimstone - Hydra. Lots of gaps needed to be filled ideally with green stuff . I just used mud paint to fill in gaps.

Paints used : Reaper paints
Primer : P3 white
Washes : Secret Weapon, P3 Armor Wash
Stirland Mud texture paint : Games Workshop ( https://www.games-workshop.com/en-CA/Mud-Basing-Collection)

I finally got inspired to do miniature painting so been working through my Shadows of Brimstone heroes and (eventually) monsters. Boy, I certainly picked the wrong game to start with considering all the minis I got now (and more coming in Wave 2)! Special thanks to my friends Chris and Zac for helping me ease into the painting hobby.

Painted Resin Heroes (Orphan, Drifter, Outlaw). Painted with Army Painter.

Another mass unit that just got in on the last day of the month.

Given it is hard to see a miniature amongst so many I'll put in the ones I liked in detail

Standard Vallejo paints. Not a lot of super detail on them but pretty good for a rabble. Lots of time but now my Goblins are almost done. Made from a mix of Battlemasters, old GW, even older GW and some locally produced miniatures from a company that was around back in the late 80's and bits of the 90's.

Manufactured by Privateer Press, size is 30mm, painted with Army Painter Warpaints, basing with Army Painter tuft and Hobby Round snow flock.

After painting so many Trollkin, this mini was a refreshing change but somehow I still stuck with lots of blue...

USS Tuscaloosa - Navwar 1/3000

USS Tuscaloosa (CA-37) was a New Orleans-class heavy cruiser of the U.S. Navy. Commissioned in 1934, she spent most of her career in the Atlantic and Caribbean, participating in several European wartime operations. In early 1945, she transferred to the Pacific and assisted in shore bombardment of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. She earned 7 battle stars for her service in World War II. Never damaged in battle, she led a charmed life compared to her six sister ships, three of which were sunk and the other three heavily damaged.

Hello all.

I stumbled across this competition when it appeared on the front page of BGG, well done thumbers.

These are the big monsters from Blood Rage, by Cool Mini or Not, I'm not sure of the scale. I've painted them with paints from different sources, including hobby paints purchased at a garden centre.

I'd like to think I can be a regular contributor to the competition, but my output rate is low and slow.

My entry for this month is from Defenders of the Realm. The miniatures are Dollar store army men quality (the retail price is $1 a figure), so perhaps that might garner a few thumbs.

If you click on the image and select "large" or "original", you can see I added a few premium touches like reflections to the coal black eyes (white mark + hippo gray corners) and hippo gray on the sword demon's toes. I wanted to use Object Source Lighting on the demon with the flaming sword; but given the model's small size, the orange glow looked silly and eliminated my ability to conceal low quality aspects of the model such as the arms and torso being a single, solid piece of plastic. The same principle is at work with the large demons - it's one solid piece of plastic, but you wouldn't realize it on casual inspection because I covered up the portions that didn't belong to the arms with dark paint.

Here's the image to prove I painted the whole demon army (original base game plus the minions expansion). I used a matte lacquer finish on the cloaked figures after I took the photos to cut down on the shine:

I'm looking forward to the day I can photograph a game board packed with 260 painted DOTR miniatures. You can see my DOTR progress in my gallery.

These miniatures are from the Secret Weapon Miniatures "Malice RPG" Treasure Set. They can, of course, be used in other boardgames and roleplaying to replace 2D treasure chest tokens and whatnot. I'm using them for Descent, because some of them are also small enough that miniatures can share a space with the treasure. For new painters, they're an excellent painting project (no eyeballs to paint!). At the moment, you can only get them on the SWM website, but I hear SWM will have them available as part of their current game tiles KS.

This is my first entry into the Golden Turtleback contest, and, indeed, my first ever picture posted on BGG (I just made my account yesterday)! I painted this up to look like San from Princess Mononoke.

I used a mix of P3 and Citadel paints and used an airbrush to prime the mini and to paint the body of the wolf.

I've been painting Zombicide very on-and-off since last year, after almost 2 decades away from painting. Last week I finally decided to change tack and finish off a whole set of zombies in one sitting. Decided to set them up with the only other fully finished figure I've done; Wanda.

I used Formula P3 paints exclusively and used liberal amounts of P3's Brown Ink for the blood stains/gore effect. Certainly not up to the calibre of the remainder of the list here but still proud of my efforts returning to this side of gaming!

All of a sudden, I realized I'd uploaded images of my painted Zombicide: Black Plague to BGG last month. So finally I'm able to participate in this contest amongst such fine painters again (it's been a few years since I did this).

I pledged in the Black Plague kickstarter because I really wanted to paint those miniatures. There's quite a lot of them, so I've still got a long way to go...

The figures were painted with Games Workshop Citadel paints, and varnished with Army Painter Anti Shine Matt Varnish. I made the acrylic bases myself at Fablab Leuven.
