Aug 8-15, 2016

My last normal week at home before the longterm travel to France. It let me get in one last(?) game night for a while. Add to that a trifecta of quick lunch games, and one more with my daughter's boyfriend Zac. It made for another good week of gaming. Heck I even managed to get out another Wargames To Go episode and record one for Boardgames To Go (to be posted in a few days). Then Lincoln surprised me by putting up the video for Welcome to the Dungeon that I was lucky enough to be part of. A good week!

I talked about this (well, learned about it) on my recent guest spot with Ronan at The Game Pit podcast. Simple as it is, I was a little unsure about how it really plays, and my first outing with the game group wasn't great. Fortunately I learned from that, and was ready with a better explanation when I tried again later in the week. This time it was much more successful. I hope to play with other people, too. Perhaps even my new space colleagues in France?

I've never played the original Castle Panic game, and don't know much about it. I assume this plays very similarly, just rethemed to Star Trek (original series). That's an IP/mythology I enjoy, and so was tickled when the individual missions within the game correspond to specific television episodes. Nice touch. The game overstayed it's welcome a bit, and we lost pretty badly, but I think it would improve upon a second play.

Another play with the new version. This time, to be honest, the players had some quibbles with the artwork. Two of the commodity suits (grain & spices) are a little close in color, but I think still better than earlier editions of this famous game. The perimeter score track is well-marked at the 5-point increments, but the individual points between are really subtle. Not a problem, but just a quibble.

Chris & Jen pointed out that this was perhaps the first eurogame I introduced them to...back in 2002! Now here we were, 14 years later, playing the same title as my unofficial (and temporary) send-off from the group.

Compared to the previous week, it showed the effect of playing with people who know the game. Very sharky, and it was all I could do to eke out a 3rd place position after being in last for the first two scoring rounds. Marcin was way out in front, and not by being lucky. Just better bidding.

Literally a lunch game, since we played it at a restaurant while waiting for & then eating our food. My opponent took a look at the skimpy rule/scoresheet and handful of dice, and was wary that this game was nothing. He quickly came around on it, and we had a great contest.

The game I played with Zac the night before flying to France again. He asked for it, and we picked sides randomly. He got the Axis, which was mostly new for him. I'd played the Air Marshal expansion before, but that was completely new for Zac. At the end of the game, he commented that the additional defensive boost from air units created a more static game. I think he may be right, and I may go back to playing the original. In this one, Zac's axis shot out to its expected lead, my Allies came back (also expected), but then a bunch of bonus scores for Italy and some late German surging opened a lead back up for him to win on turn 20.

I like sports sims/games, as long as they're fast & quick. Harry's is that title for baseball, but I'm still looking for it in other sports. Except for soccer/football, where Streetsoccer does the trick. I love that it's a real BOARDgame, too, where movement & position matters. I'm not a huge fan of the sport (we'll see if a year in France changes that), but I AM a huge fan of the boardgame. The passing game is its best feature, how the simple player & ball movement rules create something that feels like the sport. Our game was a 1-1 tie (feels about right, huh?), which went into extra time that my opponent won.

Plus, another Olympic tie-in.
