03/05/2019: I've updated my Top 50! The cutoff for this list was just after the start of the year, so there are a couple of games we've reviewed since then that haven't made the list. Maybe next time.

I plan on including a BPPP rating for the Top 10 games. Games that appeared on the list previously will note their previous place. Below are games that fell off the Top 50 altogether. Enjoy!

Without a doubt my favorite game. I will play this back to back, five games in a row, without question. I could lose each of those five games, and if asked to play a 6th would instantly agree.

I love the engine-building, the satisfying combinations of resource generation and point-cashing, supported by intuitive play and quick turns with simultaneous actions. I can even bear the take-that elements when other players raze your boards, despite not being the biggest fan of PVP games.

Remarkably, despite having purchased all the expansions to date (barring the new Allies expansion), I generally am happy with the base game and find some of the expansions unnecessary clutter.

Unreserved recommendation.

A close 2nd to 51st State and an easy challenger to the top spot depending on my mood, Terraforming Mars is an excellent engine builder and great fun. In my mind, the only way to play this game is with the drafting option; otherwise, there is too much luck that detracts from the simple elegance of the otherwise tight resource management. I haven't played any of the expansions, but, again, I don't feel compelled to. I am more than satisfied with what the base game does.

Despite the flaws with some of its components, I continue to be enamored of Patchistory and look forward to every time I can get it to table. Its combination of long-term strategy, engine building, and puzzle assembly means there's always something going on. I never feel like I'm just waiting around (despite the fact that you do often have to wait to make a decision until previous players make theirs). There is a ton of player interaction, and I love the way that the war track serves as both an aggressive and defensive mechanism - there's a bit of Cold War element here in trying to determine if someone is building up their military to come after to or to defend against you.

The heart of the game, and for me the most fun, is, of course, the tile laying. The process of auctioning off the tiles, integrating them into your landscape, and developing your engine is extremely satisfying. Early rounds where it seems not much is happening can lead to later rounds of big plays, and since all your resources are hidden there is nothing quite so satisfying as surprising someone who hasn't been paying attention to your actions with some major move at the end.

The game has a little bit of everything and pulls it all together remarkably well.

Holding on in the top 10 but dropping a little, I feel about Caverna now the way I did then: A fantastic game I don't get to play enough because of the intimidation factor of so many bits.

There's something about a well-done game of a thousand bits that's extremely satisfying. Caverna offers a plethora of paths to victory and play options; it's a point salad of the most beautiful kind. I wouldn't call it an engine-builder per se, but there's certainly a momentum to the game - small early actions, chosen well, are necessary for late-game big choices. The interaction among players can be mean sometimes, though there's rarely good cause to take an action simply to block another player, so its rarely arbitrary or ruthless to steal an action from someone else. The choices are hard, with a constant tension between the need to feed your existing family and attempting to grow it, allowing more actions that in turn require more resources to sustain. Its incredibly satisfying to come away with a big score, though it's also easy - especially for novice players - to get trapped in a rut early on and never recover.

Point of note: Without the custom inserts I built for this (and which you can buy from many insert providers), the game would be much lower on the list due to set-up alone. The inserts mean I can just pop this puppy right onto the table and get playing with only a few card deals and organizing the room tokens.

Extremely solid game.

Escape from the Aliens in Outer Space changed my mind on hidden movement games. Probably the best of the genre out there, it's also one of the scariest games I've ever played. There is real tension when the endgame is approaching and you can feel the aliens closing in - or when you're a hungry alien and you can almost smell the hapless astronaut.

This game also has the great benefit of being super-easy to teach and plays well at all player counts. I have played with new and experienced gamers alike and everyone has come out pleased with the experience.

Dark Moon has jumped up in my estimation and solidified its place as my favorite hidden role/social deduction game. The expansion adds quite a bit to the gameplay, but mostly its ascension is due to base game continuing to be fun and engaging after many plays.

One of the things I like best about Dark Moon compared to other such games is there are situations where its beneficial for one of the baddies to reveal themselves right out of the gate, particularly at higher play counts. Rather than giving the good guys an advantage, the Infected now have an agent sowing chaos and becoming a focal point around which even more debate and acrimony can arise. This is especially useful in playgroups where one or more players don't enjoy the "deduction" component of social deduction. They can come out early without worrying about compromising the experience of the game.

As I mentioned in my Episode 134 review of the game, Feudum is a beautiful and complicated mess. The rules are almost unnecessarily byzantine. There's too much to do and too much to remember. But the game is gorgeous - easily one of the most beautiful things you'll ever see on the table - and despite, or because of, its flaws is compelling, like an itch that just won't go away. The game is frustrating but I just want to figure it out. I've gotten a rule wrong almost every time I've played which just makes me want to play it even more. I own all the expansions but I can't see myself ever using them because good goddamn why would you make the experience even more confusing?

It's a remarkable accomplishment and not for everyone, but an experience you should try at least once.

Study in Emerald falls, but only slightly. My favorite Martin Wallace title, I acknowledge the theme - based as it is on the Neil Gaiman book of the same name - is a major driver for me. I know there is a 2nd edition but I've no interest in playing it. Everything that others have cited as things the 2nd edition fixed are things I loved about the 1st edition: the complex deck building, the punishing scoring mechanism, the confusing board. It is one of the few area control-style games I enjoy, and it has just enough social deduction to make for interesting table talk without overwhelming the core mechanics of the game.

Legendary jumps into the Top 10! This is the deck builder by which I measure other deckbuilders. I know that some people like the other Upper Deck Legendary titles better, but I have not played them and have never felt compelled to leave Legendary: Marvel behind. There is a ton of content keeping the game fresh, it's one of the only co-ops I really enjoy right now, and the Marvel theme means my daughter will play it with me and it's largely accessible to almost anyone who pays any attention to pop culture at the moment.

If you get into the game, I highly recommend using one of the random set-up generators out there. It makes the game easy to get to the table and forces you to explore mixing and matching hero teams and antagonists.

Dominant Species is my favorite ugly game. It's the meanest game I've ever played, one of the longest games I've ever played, a game that has made me give myself a time-out due to enraged frustration at the end of the game, and yet a game I come back to time and time again. It's ugliness emphasizes its mechanics and the need for smart tactics - it doesn't try to lure you with bright tailfeathers or a soothing warble, this game is out to eat you.

No surprise it's published by GMT - this is just as much a strategic war game of area control as any other, but one in which you are fighting a war on many fronts, not the least of which is the rapidly expanding ice cap of the board itself.

I recently played this with two 15 year old and was thoroughly whooped and had an amazing time doing so.

My favorite zombie game by a long shot. Dead of Winter has everything you could possibly want from the genre: tension, mounting dread, never quite being sure if you're able to win or not, a plethora of personalities, ruthlessness and betrayal, and occasional heroism.

If Dead of Winter was nothing but the round-by-round pressure to survive coupled with the need to meet the end-game condition, that would be solid enough (and, as an aside, this play style can be found in Salvation Road if that's what you're looking for). However, the addition of the personal goals and the possible inclusion of a betrayer ratchet the paranoia - and enjoyment - up immensely. The personal goals are enough to make a player think carefully about what resources they are going to contribute to the group to meet immediate goals, but I've rarely played where these goals cause players to put the entire group in jeopardy. The inclusion of a betrayer goal, however, causes even seemingly minor decisions to become fraught with paranoia. The doubts and suspicion among the players becomes as important as the tactical decisions being made as to where to send characters and what resources to seek out.

Of course, the Crossroads cards seal the deal, providing the opportunity for interesting and compelling narrative arcs without overdoing it.

If you've listened to the podcast, you know my feelings on the inclusion of Sparky the Stunt Dog in this one. This feels to me like a misstep; in causes some of the Crossroads cards to become incoherent, and punctures the seriousness of the atmosphere the game otherwise excels at creating. With the addition of the Long Night expansion and the inclusion of yet another animal, I have resigned myself to Plaid Hat's decisions, though these weird choices will likely see the game dropping spots in the future.
