Every so often, I'll go over to someone's house and they will have a game which they are excited to play. They get it set up and explain the rules, and we begin to play... or we would... except I have to correct them on a rule they've either forgotten or misinterpreted.

The look of shock on their face as the realization of how many times they've played that game wrong... it's heartbreaking(ly amusing).

So, to help other gamers avoid that same shocking realization, I think we should make a list of rules you've either forgotten about yourself, or rules that you've seen others forget.

Teach these gamers to fish!

You can only use the actions on your Faction Board once per round.

Our first game we played that you could keep exchanging resources for Contact tokens as much as you wanted, and it made for some bonkers turns. Playing with the correct rule was still fun, just a bit slower and more deliberate.

One rule I've seen missed a few times from comments in the forums: At the start of Age 2 and Age 3, the player weakest in military at that point decides who goes first (so they may not necessarily actually take the first turn that age).

And, if military is equal at the start of Age 2 or 3, the player who took the last card in the previous age makes the decision about who goes first this age.

It probably doesn't make a huge difference overall, but you might want to make your opponent take the first turn if all the available cards will cost them a lot, or aren't at all beneficial to you.

For a long time we played the game wrong. You actually get money when you get a grant. We forgot this and it will influence the game play a lot. Because you will get less money the need to sell and get money out of it has a bigger role. We did not like to play the expert game in that time because you do not have the time to go for the money, because you will loose two actions with which you could also test. You need to publish more in the expert game so therefore you need to test.

Another rule I saw many people forget in this game is that for the first grant you only need to publish two ingredients given on a grant. After that you have to publish all ingredients shown on the grant.

I have two different rule breaks from playing with others:

1) Tied players divide the points for their tied position, then the following player gets the next position's points, rather than tied players add that and the following position's points and divide by two. He thought it was better to tie and knock down a leader better.

2) A player thought remodel actions were unlimited in a turn. He spent many rounds buying and storing tiles, then started to move them all at once to build his city. He was thoroughly angry when I pointed out he couldn't do that, so spent his following turns just remodeling. His wife told me I needed to state variants before playing.

There are no initial card in the discard piles.

It used to be the case, but it officially changed in the latest printing. Done to mitigate the first player advantage by removing a bit of drawing options...

The bgg gang made the mistake in the latest Gamenight video

When a flying monster in an Arkham location (including street locations) is called upon to move, it will move to an adjacent unstable or street location occupied by one or more investigators; if there are multiple such locations, it moves to the one with the investigator with the lowest Sneak. If there are still multiple choices, the players decide among them. the first player decides.

Only if there are no adjacent investigators in unstable or street locations does the monster go to the Sky.

There may be one or two other rules that are sometimes gotten wrong...

Recently I found out I was setting up the game wrong. You are supposed to separate the four different fields into two piles (you have two of each), shuffle each stack and then place one pile on the other. I was shuffling all eight fields together and wondering why I would never get the fields I could plant leaks on.

Today while looking in the rules for something else I reread the card distribution phase for the 2p game and realized I may be playing wrong and I was. Before every turn during the card phase you can choose to draw the top action card. I was playing that you could only do this once! Can't wait to play with the right rule, it definitely could've been worded better in the English rules.

Cheers all!

We never even seemed to be getting close to a win.

Until we read the rules.

As compensation for destroying a Curse, you receive a value-2 Element
card of your choice from the table, which you add to your discard.

We were making it unnecessarily hard for ourselves.

And Boss Monster 2! Probably my most misplayed game(s) I own.

1) Spell/Ability order is the biggest mistake done in this game. Active player resolves first, then each other player in XP order. I very much wish this game was played with 'last played spell resolves first' like 90% of other games.

2) Many other things to long to list here...

Might seem silly because it even states it on the reference card but;

- To build a house you must pay a worker (of the matching color)

My wife and I played about 10 games, sometimes with others before we realized you couldn't just flip the card over to build a house. You had to first pay a worker of the matching card color and then flip it over.

It made getting workers that much more important.

Another seemingly DUH moment in regards to canals;

- You must play the color card of the canal piece you are trying to build.

Don't ask why we thought every card could build a canal piece but we played about 5-6 games before going "oooooohhhhhh"...this really added strategy to which cards were selected each round.

Figured I would add these since WE were playing it wrong, others might as well...

This is more a rule I missed, more than a rule I got wrong: If you can't or don't want to use all of your available actions on a turn, you can skip one or more actions to get money: Skip 1 action for 1 coin, 2 actions for 3 coins, or 3 actions for 6 coins (I think; that was from memory).

Makes it a little easier to get that little bit more income you need to trigger enough building, without having to take out a loan.

And another I often forget: If you want to put down more than one worker on the same building on the same turn, it costs you 2 actions for the second worker, 3 actions for the third, etc. I played it for a while where it was just 1 action per worker on the same building, which makes it a lot faster to complete buildings (which actually makes a nice kid-friendly variant!).

Two rules I was taught wrong which took several games before I learned the right one:

(1) Your desert tile is returned to you after each leg of the race. The guy teaching it said it stayed there forever unless you moved it as your action.

(2) When a leg ends, the first player token is passed one player to the left, and that player starts the next leg. The guy who taught me said you just keep going in order between the legs. Looks like I actually was playing this right in the first place, and someone insisted on the wrong instructions!

(3) The rules don't actually account for flipping your desert tile, they just say you can place or move it. But they don't let you change +1 to -1 or vice versa (at least, not as literally written). This one wasn't taught wrong, but one guy kept insisting he could do it, so finally we shrugged and just let him, since it seemed so minor.

It's not terrible if you get these rules wrong, but it's better with the right rules.
