I built this list to figure out which games to buy/try that my wife would enjoy playing with me. The initial criteria were from 2/5/04, and I've dated each criteria as I've added them.
1. Simple mechanics. A turn should not take too many steps and require too many decisions.
2. Quick to learn. The game has to "prove" itself in the first session.
3. Game should not last longer than 60 minutes.
4. Playable on a soft, limited-area surface; i.e., in bed. (low significance)
5. We should interact; i.e., our game play should not be independent.
6. Reasonable chance for either of us to win; i.e., the game doesn't particularly favor any particular skill of mine/hers that she doesn't/I don't have.
7. No tile placing games. She just don't like 'em. (3/9/04)
8. Fiddliness is a minor negative. Too many little pieces or having to shuffle cards too often counts as fiddly. (4/17/04)
9. We're starting to consider "event" games that don't necessarily satisfy the first 4 criteria. (1/21/05) I've moved this to another GeekList: http://tinyurl.com/4754y.
10. We're finding that my Wife enjoys games like Ticket to Ride and Puerto Rico and gets too stressed over the end-result oriented Lord of the Rings or Memoir '44. So for future games, we're going to concentrate on Tactical over Strategy games. (6/7/05)

The official 2-player variant is working out very well for us. It's an interesting game since the only element of luck is the plantation set. We've just tried the additional variant of randomizing the 12 regular violet buildings and it definitely introduces a new twist.

We play a modified 2-player version that gets us done in an hour. 16 plants are removed; Step 2 occurs when someone builds a 6th plant; 3 power plants max per player; and we end at 12 plants. The official 2-player version is just as fun, but takes about 90 minutes. More than 2 players and you really are looking at the estimated time on the box of 2 hours.

The game is a lot of fun and quite often it comes down to a tie with the cash difference between the two players (and even the top two players in 3+ player games) being within 10 Elektro. The game is relatively simple; the complexity lies mainly in the decision making.

It's a fun abstract strategy game. The balancing effect of loosing a ring whenever you accomplish capturing a row of 5 works well.

We've played Pegasus Bridge three times now and it's great fun.

-----

I had assumed incorrectly that my wife would not be interested in a war game, but while I was reading the rules she said she would be really interested in a game with minature soldiers and tanks. Booya! Never assume!

Faidutti (http://tinyurl.com/6puo4) rates the complexity level at 2 out 5, so I have some pretty high hopes for this game.

Criteria #8 gets a work out with all the little plastic trains and the deck of many, many tiny cards. But the game is fantastic. Very quick to learn and light-weight without being simplistic. We've played about a dozen times and my wife's enthusiasm for this game is on par with the enthusiasm she had for San Juan.

With this game (which satisfies all the 6 criteria - 2-player version only uses 2 of the 4 game boards) and Carcassonne - Hunters and Gatherers, I think we've determined that my wife just doesn't like tile placing games. So, this is now the 7th criteria.

We've settled in on removing the Libaries and reducing the Guild Hall bonus to 1 point per Production card. It now feels that the number of strategies has opened up and choice of strategies depends on what cards you're getting and how your opponent is building. Essentially, it feels like a richer 2-player game with the modifications we've made.

-----

We've now played it over 100 times and we're still nearly even with neither of us ever getting much more than 4 games ahead. We have made one alteration to the rules: The Guild Hall only gives One point (instead of two) for each resource card. Otherwise the Guild Hall was too powerful.

-----

We've now played it nearly 40 times and it's our current favorite. My wife and I are dead even at 20 games a piece.

-----

Very cool first two games. It satisfied all the criteria and was lots of fun. And it totally smokes the similar Citadels as a 2-player game.

So now, having played it correctly, I would say it perfectly meets the 6 criteria above. Being able to draw from the discard strongly satisfies the interaction criteria. That this game was fun, even without this interaction, is a testament to the game design.

-----

We enjoyed this for a while, but I started finding it too abstract for my tastes. The sense of an expediation was lost to the pure mathematical structure. Also, we play almost independently of each other. Sure, we look at each others cards laid down, but it has reasonably little effect on the strategy. I still think this is a very cool game, but it is the reason for criteria #5.

I like this game a lot. She thinks it's boooooring... I haven't ventured to buy/try any other tile placing games because of it.
Criteria #4 has sufficiently low significance, that we're willing to not satisfy it for the right game; e.g., Mah-Jongg. Thanks for the comments... I've amended the above description.

So far, we think San Juan (which has similar mechanics) is superior.

-----

Well ranked and recommended, we've played it a couple of times. It's a bit fiddly what with having to shuffle the eight character cards every round. It feels like it will get better over time - right now, though, it feels like it's just converting money into stored money (on the cards). As a two-player game, it doesn't feel as strong as Wyatt Earp. The art work is very nice, but the cards are a little on the cheap and thin side.

The 2-player version is pretty enjoyable. I can see it's a very different game considering there is no trading. The luck factor is significant, but it's a very quick game. We've kind of burned out on Lost Cities, and this is a pretty good replacement. The bean theme is fun, too.

-----

Simple card game for $8, so we gave it a try. After one play, it felt like an uninspired cheap game. The mechanics are no more complex than Lost Cities, but it just doesn't have that something special. Perhaps it's better when there's more than two players.

We're about 10 and 9 with Sauron starting at 15 (the easiest). It's sometimes too much stress playing this game, which I think is a testament to how great this game is.

-----

We've played a couple games of this now. It's a bit long, but it really adheres to the theme and we're definitely going to play it more. We managed to destroy the ring on our second attempt with a score of 74. We'll have to see how this game holds up over time and whether the addition of the Friends & Foes expansion will increase its fun and longevity.
