This was the game that pushed me over the edge, to start Boardspace.net. It's fine to play by email, where you have infinite time to plan your move - but the real challenge is to play and develop those elegant combinations in real time.

LOA was my original internet gaming project. It's a great game that only requires a checkerboard to play. I wrote a standalone java program, and ran a yearly PBEM tournament for years, but I always intended to have a realtime version "someday". I adapted the existing Applet for use at Boardspace.net so it was quickly available as game #2.

Plateau is a real mind-twister. The more you think about it, the less you know about what would be good strategy in any particular situation. If your play is predictable, you will surely lose! Plateau is another game I enjoyed playing by email, but found myself spending hours analyzing each move. Realtime is better.

Yinsh is proably the easiest of the project Gipf games to learn to play, and is probably also the easiest to contine to play casually, without feeling the obligation to study it to death. Planning a long term strategy is so difficult, a first order approximation to a strategy feels fine.
