Grimwold's new-to-you geeklists are the highlight of my month on the 'geek. They motivate me to review the new games I've played (and recycle my entries as comments), and they allow me to read the thoughts of some of the most insightful BGGers on new and classic games.

But the new-to-me list is inevitably full of first impressions. I'm interested in hearing how those games that seemed so great at the time stood up to multiple plays. Did you actually play them that much after the first month? Did a game you dismissed at the time turn out to be better in retrospect?

Add an entry with the same game you chose for the New To You Oct 15 geeklist. Link to your entry in that geeklist, then write down your thoughts on the game you chose a year on. If your impression of some of the other games you wrote up that month have changed, let us know about that too.

The hot game that month was Pandemic Legacy: Season 1. Has it stood the test of time?

I'll be starting these lists mid-month (except when I forget!), so we don't have to keep up with this list and Grimwold's (and several other monthly ones) all at the same time. You can subscribe to the announcement thread for reminders.

The Voyages of Marco Polo

Played 3 more times since last year, I can say that this has survived the test of time. The additional characters from the The Voyages of Marco Polo: The New Characters has given the game more options and replayability and I'm glad this smart game is in my collection.

Original rating: 8.5/10
Current rating: 7.0/10

Soulfall

This has not been played again since. This is really not the fault of the game since the original play was with the print and play copy of a friend who has not really joined my group again.

Three "new to me" games last October. None which faired particularly well.

Inhabit the Earth had a good initial run getting three plays at the end of October and then five more into November. And then that was it. My wife and I enjoyed the game, but it just got overshadowed by other games in November and we never got back to it. It may have had it's life extended had we played it as a three or four player game. I was quite curious to see how it would perform as one of the core mechanics is the leap-frogging movement across the continents.

Planet Steam got one play then and no plays since. It's not a bad economic game, but there are so many good economic games out there that unless someone really needs the steampunk theme to get them in the mood for an economic game, there's really no reason to play this one. I'd rather play Arkwright, for example.

While I'd had great hopes that Patchwork would be a hit with both my wife and I, after two plays, we gave up on it.

I'm sure the decision-making in this game can get quite agonizing if one gives themselves enough time to plot out multiple turns and anticipate the other player's moves as well. But as my wife plays fast and loose (and I have to play at her pace), the game doesn't really pull us in. And for me, Patchwork is also just a little too abstract for my liking.

Hadn't started adding items to the New to You lists last October, but thank you for letting me post here anyhow.

I've come to profess my love for The Other Hat Trick. Speaking of love, I can't help but compare it to Love Letter.

Like Love Letter, The Other Hat Trick is a 17-card deduction microgame. In this game, you are magicians trying to perform two card "tricks" that score a variety of points depending on the two "props" that are face down in front of you and the two other players.

Flub a trick and you must turn one of your cards over, giving the other magicians more information about the location of the props. Successfully perform a trick and you perform "slight of hand" by shuffling your two props with the additional prop in the centre of the table and thus hiding some of the available information.

Love Letter is fine. I play it occasionally with my kids, who have a lot of fun with it. But I've always hated the treacly story and Barbie doll artwork. The Queen has been thrown in prison, so you are trying to comfort the Princess by courting her? With The Other Hat Trick, the mechanisms fit the setting really, really well. I also find the game play much more satisfying.

The Other Hat Trick has its limits. It's for three players only, and not everyone is keen on playing these simple, tiny games these days. The Other Hat Trick, however, is available as a free PnP, so if you decide it's not for you, it won't be a big deal. If you do like it, Christmas is around the corner (sorry) and these make great stocking stuffers.

Another game I played for the first time last October is Port Royal. I've played it a handful of times since then and it's still coming out regularly. I bought the expansion for it at Christmas and never play without it.

Finally, there's Haggis. This hasn't been played as much as the other two--my partner is picky when it comes to games like this--but this will stay with us and come out again soon.

Last October, I was fortunate enough to play 10 new games and 1 new expansion. As is my custom I'll list them in decreasing order of current rating (games before expansions) and note any change in opinion or ranking along the way.

Food Chain Magnate -- (1 last October; 6 plays since) _9_ (up 1 tick in rating; no change in position)
(images by jmdsplotter & Percatron)

I've really enjoyed exploring Food Chain Magnate: it surprisingly volatile, permits a significant variety of viable choices, and - to my eye, which I acknoledge is not remotely a universal opinion - looks really attractive on my table. Better still, I've now played with at least three different groups of people - and all have found it fascinating. Definitely a hit.

Volta -- (6 last October; 5 plays since) _7⅔_ (no change in rating; up 1 place in position)
(images by Martinus & HilkMAN)

This is fast, simple, and evocative. It's a lovely design, and one I enjoy putting out for friends and family. I'd be very suprised if I wasn't still playing this years from now.

Haspelknecht -- (1 last October; 3 plays since) _7⅔_ (down 1 tick in rating; down 1 place in position)
(images by BaSL & henk.rolleman)

Really enjoyed this the first time out, then noticed that it was all about the developments. And yet, the last couple plays - with that in mind - have been interesting, too. So while I don't think I like it quite as well as my initial blush of enthusiasm, I'm still pretty positive about its viability as a game - even if the theme doesn't quite shine through as clearly as I'd first thought.

The King Is Dead -- (1 last October; 1 play since) _7⅔_ (no change.)
(both images by Dunc)

Very nice reimagining of King of Siam. The presentation is attractive, and the game is clear and engrossing. I'm enjoying this one.

Traders of Osaka -- (1 last October; 1 play since) _7⅓_ (no change.)
(images by W Eric Martin & ultreia)

Don't own this one yet, and I find myself still tempted by it. It's clever, and also not quite as straightforward as I'd first thought: there appear to be opportunities for subtlety here, which is fun.

Moongha Invaders -- (1 last October; none since) _7⅓_ (no change.)
(images by W Eric Martin & Shiny Blue Robot)

I liked this one quite a lot more than I'd expected, and yet found myself disappointed with the large and plastic-heavy new version (as compared to the earlier simple mostly-wooden-bit edition.) Oh, sure; I (mostly) knew what I was getting myself in for when I signed up for the kickstarter. But I was still surprised how much less usable the plastic bits were compared to the blocks.

Pack of Heroes -- (3 last October; none since) _7_ (no change.)
(both images by Phil81)

Sadly, son #2 lost interest in this one as the month wore on, and I've not convinced him to give it another shot. It's quite cute; but I don't have many 2p play opportunities ather than with the youngster: most of my gaming is with larger groups!

Mysterium -- (1 last October; none since) _6⅓_ (down two ticks in rating; no change in position.)
(images by W Eric Martin & MisterPoncho)

May have overrrated this one. It had a lovely ambience, but I found it felt perplexingly not like a game. I did things, and stuff happened, and it isn't clear to me (in retrospect) that there was a strong tie between those two things.
While I'd play without complaint if it were important for others, I think also I'd be entirely content to not play this one again.

Moongha Invaders Two Player -- (1 last October; none since) _6⅓_ (no change in rating; up 1 place in position)
(both images by Shiny Blue Robot)

Again, it didn't quite amuse son #2; and I've little other opportunity for 2p gaming. It's cool; but not quite as compelling as the multiplayer version.

Drakon (third edition) -- (1 last October; none since) _6⅓_ (no change in rating; down 1 place in position)
(images by spellen & UndeadViking)

Random, chaotic; and mercifully short enough to not dramatically overstay its welcome. It's not quite my style, but I could imagine playing again were it called of me.

Istanbul: Mocha & Baksheesh -- (1 last October; none since) _6⅔_ (up 9 ticks in rating; no change in position)
(images by W Eric Martin & kalvisk)

A pleasant expansion for a game that I didn't find that engaging in the first place. And so as this provided more of the same, it didn't manage to vault Istanbul into the range of things that I'd actively desire to play. In fact, were I to play Istanbul again, I think I'd not have any particular opinions as to whether the expansion was a benefit.

Thanks again to my youngsters, the BAP attenders, the Monday Lunch folk, and the Wednesday Night gang for some great game experiences.

PAX

What I said then:
Quote:

I really like Biblios. Joel Eddy, a while back, billed this game as a Biblios Killer. It is not. I think Joel also came to believe this as he sold Pax and kept Biblios. Pax is still a decent game, though. But it is not as interactive nor does it have as much tension as Biblios. Pax does come with solo rules and I have had fun playing it solo. For that reason alone, I think it will remain in my collection.

What I say now: This game Biblios it ain't. My opinion dropped further and I unloaded it for free.

Tiny Epic Galaxies

What I said then:
Quote:
I enjoyed this one at first, but it got repetitive pretty fast. My copy will probably find a new home fairly soon. The dice are really cool, though.

What I say now: I see so many comments along the lines of 'So much game in a small box!' I think people's expectations must be extremely low when they see a small box. I've seen many small box games far more interesting than this. My copy is in a new home and I won't be visiting the Tiny Epic series again.

The Builders: Antiquity

What I said then:

Quote:
This game as well as its predecessor get compared to Splendor quite a bit. Splendor is quicker, more interactive, and more elegant (I know, taboo word). Builders is decent, but turns can get quite puzzley as it is an action point system and extra actions can be purchased. You sometimes have a lot you want to accomplish on a turn and you may need a while to map out a way to get it done. Due to this, I will likely never play this with more than three and may try to cap it at two players. Even so, I would not be surprised if this were gone from my collection by next year. I'm keeping Splendor, though.

What I say now: Yep, I was right. This game didn't stick around long. Turns are slow and solitary. I found it more boring every time I played it.

Wow. That was not a good month for new games.

Timeline: Star Wars (1 play then; 0 since) I correctly identified in that GL as basically disposable. Timeline: Events (6 plays then; 2 plays since) is more breakoutable but fundamentally a little too simple for us, I fear.

It's maybe a little disappointing that I haven't played Twixt (3 plays then; 0 since) again, but I get to play so many abstracts and this being a connection game means it's not one of the ones that most appeals to me.

And I at least win some sort of award for prescience for correctly prognosticating that Blue Moon Legends (4 plays then; 1 play since) would indeed find itself given the boot by Magic: The Gathering (1 play then; 16 plays since). I'd like to try picking up BM to work through with another playing partner, but, you know, there's only so many card games in the year.

As it was Essen month i played a lot of new to me games.

Codenames
Quote:
I love it. It's unique, it's great; it's my favorite Essen game so far.

That's what I wrote back then. Since then I helped creating the (official) Hungarian edition and played the game 30+ times. It's my favorite game published in 2016. Nothing's changed.

Das letzte Paradies
I still think it's a very interesting and good game but after a replay last week I can see even though the rules aren't complex, it is rather hard to understand the critical points of your decisions before first play so I guess many won't play it a second time. Too bad, i still like it.

RevoltaaA
It's good fun even though people I have played it with were divided over this one.

Tokaido
One more play since, this time with my wife who also enjoyed it (admitting the look of the game did matter a lot).

Hengist
A 2-player game with terrible wording of the rules... I'm not sure it gets really good (only a 'not bad' 'short family filler') with proper rules either so it's moved to my trade pile.

Stingy
This simple little game could go to my trade pile as well, but it won't - first of all it's such a small box that it does not take much space, and second, it's going to be a good tool to teach this and that to my kids when they are the right age.

Amphipolis
Quote:
I'm not very impressed, (...)
I need to play it with family to see how it works with them; right now my rating can even be called optimistic. 6

That's what I wrote back then. Then I played it with family. And again and again. Because they liked it. They enjoyed it. We enjoyed it. lack of novelty aside, I must say this game works fine as a 20-minute filler for families.

Five Tribes: The Artisans of Naqala
Still like it. It does not make the game better so you might pretty much call it unnecessary but it adds further possibilities (and colors) without making the game weaker which is quite a feat.

Camel Up: Supercup
Yup, it makes the game better for gamers and not worse for families. More options, a bit more influence on the outcome of the race, I like it.

Sort of hard to answer this one. In a sense no, it hasn't stood the test of time because the game has a fixed lifespan. But I still rate it very highly, and if there were more story to go, I would easily be playing this some more. I'm also highly looking forward to Season 2.

Then: 10/10
Now: 10/10

SHH is interesting, and I enjoyed it, but hasn't hit the table since. This game might actually be so physically small that I just forget it exists. I should bring it again some time.

Then: 7/10
Now: 7/10

Operation F.A.U.S.T. is another light bluffing filler game. It's perfectly passable, but the genre is so crowded and my tastes have shifted a bit since I got this. Unlikely to see more play.

Then: 6/10
Now: 6/10

Because my list was so short this time last year, I might as well talk about the new expansions too:

The Hound's Tooth is still one of my go-to ships in Scum (who are also my go-to faction.) I love this ship - it comes with a plethora of crew slots, some serious bulk and a 180 degree firing arc that helps mitigate its maneuverability issues somewhat. It's always one of my first choices to slot into a list.

Then: 10/10
Now: 10/10

I like Argent, and Mancers of the University is more of the same. I think I would always include the expansion if able. However, the base game doesn't hit the table very often and the friend who really pushes for it moved and is no longer part of my local game group.

Then: 7/10
Now: 7/10

Codenames
Quote:
My preorder copy of Codenames came in this month. I didn't realize when I decided to preorder it how quickly it would go out of stock, but I'm definitely glad I did. Codenames is a pretty great word/party game. The clue giver is a tough part to play, and you might run into a little AP, but that's why they include the timer in the box. We played this 3 times in a row the first time I broke it out and everyone really enjoyed it. It's heavier that it seems, but it's super easy to teach and doesn't take long to play it at all. Definitely a win.

Codenames is a really good game. It still comes out pretty frequently, and it's been a hit with almost all of the people I've played it with.

Rating Then: 7.5

Nations: The Dice Game
Quote:
I learned Nations: The Dice Game on yucata this month, and played it a couple of times. It's pretty light, even for a dice game, but I enjoyed it more than many other dice games I've played. I find the roll once per round, take one action per turn mechanism to be a pretty interesting one. It leads to some tough decisions and interesting action combos. There's not a lot of direct interaction, but you definitely need to pay attention to what the other players are doing. I don't think I'd ever buy this game because I don't really have a group that it would appeal to, but I would happily play it.

Nations: The Dice Game is... Fine. I would play it again. It's not a bad filler. It's not something I'm going to run out and by or ask for.

My pick last October was Reef Encounter which I did manage to play another time in 2015 and have sadly not had the chance to return to it. RE seems to be a tricky game to get played as the heavier euro crowd has largely moved on to newer, shinier games while the 18xx/Winsome crew would rather just play those games. Still, for me Reef Encounter is a deep, tense experience and one that I'd be happy to play more frequently (in person, I do play the occasional online game).

Rolling Stock - I've only managed to play this another time or two. I like it, but not sure I can manage to play it enough to improve at it. I should probably pick up a physical copy some day.

I enjoyed Paris Connection, The Last Spike, and Fresh Fish quite a bit and have played them many times. Paris Connection being the slight favorite. 18?? has not really resurfaced in the wake of several excellent 18xx releases.

I did not love The Gallerist and repeat plays only worsened my opinion. I haven't even thought about The Game since playing it the first time.

As I feared, Prosperity didn't have the staying power to hold up over time. Only one play last December since the 6 plays in October for the list. I've gone back to Suburbia a couple of times since then. I need to give it one more try, but it may go on the trade shelf.
Set up for four.

Rating: still d10-7 out of 10.

A year ago, I chose Gettysburg (125th Anniversary edition) as my best game of the month. Has it stood the test of time, not really. Would I play it again... absolutely but my main war game opponents are my son and my Bro-in-law. My son is in high school now and is just too busy with friends, sports and school work to play a war game with dad. My Bro-in-law has had changes in work that keep him traveling/too busy to get together with me. I would love to have it hit the table again some time.

The one that has stood the test of time and only as a solo experience so far is Brew Crafters: The Travel Card Game. I have gotten this out occasionally to fill some time playing solo. I don't break it out often but do enjoy it when I do play.

I've also played Tournament Express a few times in the last year as well. This game is strictly solo play and just some dice rolling fun.

I have not played Regatta since last year. I really haven't found the right group that would enjoy this. I might have to drag it out for my Thursday night game group. Maybe do a "retro-night".

This was my top game for October 2016, but now would be second on the list. I’ve played this twice more since last October, but after a few games, it felt very much like a Leacock game (a ‘moving around with a time pressure trying to keep on top of events before winning/losing’ game) and although I’d happily play this again, it probably isn’t going to make it to the table any time soon.

Where this probably lost out was because of Pandemic Legacy arriving on the scene, and in the process, putting me off Pandemic (and its derivatives) for some time.

Baseball Highlights 2045
Number 2 last year, but definitely should have been number 1. I’ve played this 15 times since last year, and that excludes all plays on iPad. I also played in a friendly BH2045 cup event, and have really enjoyed the game. It’s good to have a success story on these lists for once.

This game went on to be voted ‘Game Of The Year 2016’ in my local group, and deservedly so. A rich and interesting game, and that’s without any expansions.

The Grizzled

I’m not sure why, but I haven’t played this since last year, and also haven’t seen it appear at my local group. It was an ok experience – nothing special, but also nothing terrible.

I said last year I felt it was forgettable, and it seems that has been the case.

Tumblin-Dice
I haven’t played this since last year, and haven’t missed it at all. Too much luck and nastiness for me – If I’m playing a dexterity game I enjoy something with skill like Crokinole, or fun like Flick ‘Em Up and Pitchcar.

Not for me.

Ignis is a fine little combinatorial abstract, where the goal is to push your opponent's tiles off the board. It reminds me more than a little of Abalone. We've continued to play it throughout the year, and it now stands at a total of 25 plays, with a fair chance of making it into my h-index list by the end of this calendar year.

As mentioned in last year's entry, I had an ulterior (or supplementary, at least) motive in acquiring this game: The board looked like it would be perfect for Mega-Volcano, and it is. We've played just a few more games of Mega-Volcano with the Ignis board than we have games of Ignis.

I played 14 new to me games last October. 2 of them are now in my top 10 and another 2 in my top 50, so I would say it was a pretty good month for new games!

The winner

Plays in October 2015: 1
Total plays: 22
The winner is the beautiful and amazing Evolution. It is a light, almost family-style game simulating, well, evolution (you wouldn't have guessed it, right? ). It may not be as strategic or sofisticated as Dominant Species or some other games but it just clicks for me and a lot of my gaming buddies (hence the number of plays). It is probably the most beautiful game I own. It gets played in an hour. It works perfectly at all player counts. It can get very mean, nasty and downright evil. It has a high level of strategy for the time it takes to play it. Those are all the reasons that make this game my no. 2 game of all time.

Stood the test of time

Plays in October 2015: 5
Total plays: 15
Blood Rage could very well have been the best game I have ever played. If I haven't played Cthulhu Wars. So, BR is "only" in my top 10. It is the most clever game made by CMON. It is also one of the best produced ones (probably THE best from CMON). But the important thing is the gameplay - area control combined with drafting? Amazing! I have yet to meet a person who would not like this game.

Plays in October 2015: 2
Total plays: 21
Takenoko is a game that everyone loves. It is THE game that gets played when we can't agree on what to play, just because noone ever said: "I don't want to play this". It is beautiful, light but with meaningful decisions, relatively short and quick to set up. Top 50 game.

Plays in October 2015: 5
Total plays: 13
Tiny Epic Galaxies is a small-in-box but big-in-gameplay game. It is very interesting and different from other games we own so it gets its special place. Everything the box promises, the game delivers - easy entry, small footprint, high strategy and replayability and short play time. The only beef I have - I can't win it. Still, in the top 50 for me.

Plays in October 2015: 1
Total plays: 8
Mysterium is the cooperative version of Dixit (sort of). It can be really fun with the right group but it can be really dull with a wrong one.

Want to play again but did not get chance

Total plays: 1
Enigma is an interesting game that works more like a puzzle. It is very clever and I am terrible at it but I would like to get my brain another chance.

Total plays: 1
I actually liked Ultimate Warriorz more than King of Tokyo but unfortunately, KoT is better known so we keep playing that one. But someday, I hope I get to play Ultimate Warriorz again...maybe if I bought it?

Would be willing to play again but wouldn't miss it if I didn't

Don't want to play again

A slow month, with only three new to me games, and I suppose I'm cheating a little by selecting an expansion as my favorite so far, but Tuscany is just incredible, Chris (my wife) and I have played Viticulture three in the last three days since we started in on this expansion and it just keeps getting better. I got us Pandemic Legacy for Christmas (Christine's not on BGG so no worries about spoiling the surprise) and the semi-legacy nature of Tuscany has me excited to try Pandemic.

Ok so Tuscany isn't even remotely a legacy game. It still easily stood the test of time, and has become one of our favorite games, with 8 total plays since October, and there are still modules we haven't played through yet. This was the real beginning of my love of Stonemaier and they haven't let me down yet.

Quote:
Fury of Dracula (second edition)
In the spirit of Halloween this was our meetup title this month. I made the terrible (and never to be repeated, lesson learned) mistake of massively overpaying for this about three months before the reprint was announced, but I have to say I really liked this game, and if we hadn't discovered Tuscany it would be a shoe-in for favorite game of the month. We just had such a great time playing it, so thematic, so while the cost will always rankle me a bit, I'm happy to have this in my collection.

We are actually planning a get together this weekend to play this, as Halloween always puts me in the mood to play this. I also now own the third edition just to remind me how stupid it is to pay over value for out of print games. I may actually come update this entry after we play again, but I do remember enjoying this.

Quote:
Summoner Wars: Master Set
The last game we tried this month. I really like it, but Christine really, really doesn't like this kind of game. So while this will stay in my collection, as I really liked the ease of the rules and the depth of the game, this was the death knell for Netrunner and Mage Wars, as they will just never hit the table. Summoner Wars is quick enough to teach that I will keep it around for plays with some of our gaming group though, and I may even look into some additional armies, as I enjoyed the game a lot.

Traded this away, Chris really dislikes this style of game and it seems silly to keep a game that will never get played.

Last Year's List

Robinson Crusoe: Adventures on the Cursed Island

7 subsequent plays. Current Rating: 8.0/10 [No change]

Somehow I still enjoy this game despite the fact that after 8 solo plays I have yet to win it. I did have to take a break from it for a while though as my last couple losses were extremely demoralizing - played really well, the cards and dice just didn't cooperate. So that is my one complaint, is that there are games you just can't win. But even despite that, it is a super fun game. It is highly thematic and the difficulty is more good than bad. I actually have it on the docket to play multiplayer in my game group coming up and I am anxious to see how it plays with more than one. The only thing I am struggling with now is, do I upgrade to the new edition? laugh

Wow - this time last year was a great month for new games. Three games that I rate very highly and have all been played multiple times over the year.

Codenames
Initial rating:
Current geek rating: 10
Plays in first year: 59

Great little word-based party game that works well with gamers and family alike. The only people it doesn't work well with are people whose native language isn't English - and even they can have some fun, although generally you need them in larger teams!! Brilliant idea, and one I can see will still be tabling regularly for some time to come.

7 Wonders Duel
Initial rating:
Current geek rating: 9
Plays in first year: 29

This is a great 2 player implementation of 7 Wonders, but do find it lacks the replayability of the original, and some other 2 player games I own. After 29 plays I'm still enjoying it, but really replayable 2 player games in my house tend to see more like 50-100 plays in the first year - this has started to get stale now, and although I still play it most months, it's an every month, not every week/games session game.

Star Realms: Colony Wars
Initial rating:
Current geek rating: 10
Plays in first year: 101

Only the fact that it's effectively an expansion stopped this being my game of the month this time last year. I loved the original, and I love this as much, if not more. It has the advantage that my husband is better at it, whereas the original I could win comfortably, as the pacing is just slightly different and suits his playstyle better. Brilliant 2 player game, and so easy to get out and just play several games in a row - and so portable for holidays too.

This was my geeklist from a year ago - New to Me October 2015

I'm noticing a trend... the longer I'm in the hobby the harder it becomes for new games to stay in my collection. This month only 1 out of 5 games I bought still remain. I still enjoy trying new games so this doesn't bother me and when I find a new game that sticks around in our collection it's a real winner.

Games That Stood The Test of Time:

Elysium is now my favorite new to me game from October 2015

Elysium, 8 -> 8/10 (owned)

4 plays since October 2015

I haven't had as many plays of this as I would like, partly because I'm not sure the game is quite as good with two compared to three or four. However; every time t hits the table I have a great experience, the variability of the different decks really changes how the game is played and which strategies you will try. Both of my kids enjoy this one as well and there is a fair amount of player interaction especially when going after bonuses, deciding which columns to use and making sure you aren't handing someone the game by allowing them to get a group of cards that will score oodles of points. To some up the interaction it is both in card denial and directly stealing from other players or forcing them to take a broken legend tile. There is a great engine building component with some innovative mechanisms (I really enjoy figuring out when to move cards from your active tableau to your Elysium).

If you haven't had a chance to try this one yet I highly recommend it. Also my daughter was 10 when she started playing this and has a few wins under her belt.

New York 1901, Initial rating -> 8 (sold)

6 plays since October 2015

For me this game has stood the test of time since I am always willing to play it. However; my family and gaming friends are not as enamored with the game as I am. After not getting it to the table for 6 months I decided to sell my copy. Still a game I'd recommend for families, especially if you're looking for a great gateway game that is as simple rules wise as Ticket to Ride.

Games that haven't stood the test of time:

Tiny Epic Galaxies, 6 -> 6

I did enjoy my one play, but there is something I just don’t like about the overall aesthetic of the Tiny Epic games which keeps me from seeking them out to play/buy. I’d be more tempted if it was a full sized game with better/larger components. In regards to TEG I’d much rather play Roll for the Galaxy which while different shares enough mechanically and thematically to scratch the same itch.

Tokaido, 8 -> 6

Dropped my rating because after reflecting on my one play I realized that as awesome as the artwork is and zen the play experience can be there just isn’t enough going on to entice me to play it again. The decisions seem too straightforward which, in my opinion, would make repeated plays somewhat boring. Not a game I’d refuse to play again, but also not one I’m seeking out.

10 Days in Asia, 6 -> 4

I enjoy the 10 Days series of games, but so far this is my least favorite map and not one I want to play again. My original thoughts go into more detail and since they haven’t changed I won’t rehash them here.

Ashes: Rise of the Phoenixborn, 6 -> 4 (sold)

My intial thoughts held true and Ashes didn’t see another play before being sold. To summerize my previous problems with the game I didn’t find the decks well balanced against each other making deckbuilding a priority. I appreciate even more the excellent job Plaid Hat did balancing the different factions in Summoner Wars where deckbuilding wasn’t a necessity. Also, at least with the initial factions, strategies seemed very straight forward if played with the prebuilt decks. All in all I really liked the mana system, but for me Summoner Wars is hands down the superior game.

Camel Up: Supercup, 6 -> 4 (traded)

This expansion just wasn’t for me. This is a game we pull out with our family and friends and I’m not interested in adding more modules I have to teach since it takes away from how streamlined Camel Up is. For us the base game is perfect as is, but if you typically play with gamers it definitely adds a few more strategic options on you turn.

Catch a Falling Star, 4 -> 4 (sold)

Whether or not my kids were influenced by my thoughts on the game, To Catch a Falling Star quickly faded into the background and Animal Upon Animal has kept coming back to the table when looking for a stacking dexterity game. The next one I’m interested in trying is Riff Raff.

Mars Needs Mechanics, 6 -> 4

My thoughts haven’t changed (dry, procedural and boring) nor have I played this again.

Sun Tzu (I have the older Dynasties version), 4 -> 4 (sold)

Sold without regret, neither my son nor I enjoyed the mechanics of this game. While mechanically different I much prefer Battle Line if I want to play a head to head game with some bluffing and misdirection in it.

Ghooost, 2 ->2

Original thoughts still stand, this game felt like a convoluted version of Uno gulp

Thanks for reading and feel free to ask any questions.
Cheers,
Will

It looks like October was a mighty fine month with 4 new games that all managed to pass my test of time in one way or another!

I've played Between Two Cities 12 more times in the past year and it has definitely passed my test of time. Being easier to teach and faster to play than 7 Wonders while being just as scalable and fun has been a big part of that. I understand why this has fallen flat for a lot of people, but luckily my group really gets into the partnership aspect of Between Two Cities that makes it unique and we keep having a lot of fun with it when it comes out.

Agricola: All Creatures Big and Small was my top choice last year as I'm a worker placement nut and its a great 2 player take on the genre. Of course as it only supports two players it hasn't been played enough to retain the top spot on this list. On top of that I have yet to play it with anyone but my kids so I haven't really been able to explore it all the competitively either. Still, every time I play with them I get excited about the possibilities and would recommend this as a fine choice for anyone who enjoys worker placement games and regularly plays 2 player games.

Its rare I deem a game to have stood my test of time when I haven't played it again in a year... but Barony is such a game. The lovely, chunky wooden playing pieces aside, I quite enjoy how well it distills 4x-ish gaming into a quickish, lightish, abstractish package. Unfortunately, despite this travelling to game night and back with me quite a bit it hasn't been a good fit for my group. Or I should say its too much like a very light version of some of our favorite games to be a very good wind down when we're done playing them (ie: "Hey! Now that we're done grubbing out hexes and beating each other up in Scythe who wants to wind down grubbing out hexes and beating each other up in Barony!?"). I imagine the coming expansion to extend play to 5 players will help a lot too... so since I'm so excited to play again if I ever get the chance Barony has passed my test of time well enough.

My favorite co-op is Pandemic... and if I'm going to choose a light version of it I'll play Forbidden Island. Forbidden Desert is pleasant enough, but I really miss the "smart deck" that stacks itself against you from the other games. Not that the randomly wandering storm isn't menacing... its just that when it consistently fails to hit you where it hurts or gets stuck in the corner I feel a little let down.

That being said my kids think Desert is fantastic. Putting a flying ship together is way cooler than collecting treasures and keeping everyone hydrated seems to keep their interest better than keeping an island from sinking. So, since its so much fun playing with them Forbidden Desert has passed my test of time as a pleasant family game.

STOOD

ONE NIGHT WEREWOLF - it still the winner, sitting with 9 plays. Is a game that requires a good (and big) group to work, but when you have both, it can be a blast.

Rating then: 8.0
Rating now: 8.0

LEGENDARY ENCOUNTERS: ALIEN - just one more play, but one that served to keep my opinion of it high. It is challenging, allows for some timely cooperation, and is thematic - there is little more to ask.

Rating then: 7.5
Rating now: 7.5

MEXICA - haven't been played again, sadly. It still is a smooth game, one that pits players against each other nicely and offers a good deal of options each turn. But is one of that good games that is lost in the noise.

Rating then: 7.5
Rating now: 7.5

CODENAMES - was played a few more times in our end of the year reunion, then a some more later on. It is just easy to get it to the table, specially now that it has a portuguese edition. Not a favorite of mine, but is good and quick enough that I'm willing to play costantly.

Rating then: 7.0
Rating now: 7.0

SORT OF STOOD

CASTLE PANIC - is a game I wanted to play more, but since I don't own it, nor am I able to play with the owner frequently, I wasn't able. Therefore, it stays in a grey area of stooding.

HAVEN'T STOOD

ILLEGAL - wasn't played again and I don't miss it at all.

Rating then: 6.5
Rating now: 5.5

IKUSA - has some nice mechanics and beautiful components, but these were put in a slog of a game, one that can last for way too much time and can have huge downtime. It isn't a surprise that I didn't play it again.

Rating then: 6.0
Rating now: 5.5

FLEET - no more plays and no desire to repeat.

Rating then: 6.0
Rating now: 5.0

And that was it!

Regards,

Looks like I forgot (or didn't have time) to make a list last year but looking at my personal list it seems I had loads of new to me games.

Cornwall is just the kind of game I don't mind having too manh of. Light, tile laying, simple rules with something interesting each turn and very quick. I've played it loads this year and wil continue to. Nothing innovative at all, just a fun game.

Other games I've played and enjoyed since:

A Fake Artist Goes to New York - great pictionary type party game. Preferable to all others in that genre
Antarctica - Argentum Verlag keep making some grat games (this year it wasn't quite ready). I enjoyed this a lot and have played it quite a few times but it might not last too much longer.
Rome: City of Marble - another tile layer. Enjoy this a lot.
The Bloody Inn - slightly regretted not getting this at Essen last year, and perhaps should have picked it up at this one.

Only played once, but would like to again:

Manhattan TraffIQ
Eight Epics
RevoltaaA
504 - well 3 times I guess, but all in one sitting.
Ponzi Scheme

Meh:

Guns & Steel
Signorie
Butts away! Heroes
Siggil
Perfect Alibi
Celestia
