A game that I once picked up for a massive discount, and one of the best buys I've done. We don't play it very often, but we keep coming back to it once in a while, mostly because none of us have figured out a ""best"" strategy to take. I'm usually bad at auction type games, but I still like this one.

I love the modular setup and how that impacts which tiles are available for auction. The once around nature of the auction is also not seen enough in other games.

It's funny, I thought I might have been overrating the game for as much as I've played it last year and then it made a significant jump up this year. By all means, I do need to play this game more, but I love the multiple paths to victory and the deck building element of it in which the cards have powers and endgame scoring that need to be taken into consideration.

rathstar wrote:
Every time I've played this game I've come away with a new appreciation for how great it is. There are so many different ways to get things done and you have to be proactive and reactive when unexpected things happen. You're balancing resources, building placement, card play, money, and new cards. All of that in the base game, but then there are some very well thought out expansions that provide new maps to tighten up the game at all player counts and tug at the parts of the base game that were slightly less interesting. It's hard to go wrong in the game but that means the challenge is to just do better than everyone else. This game also has lots of the best kind of indirect competition. You can be inconvenienced on the map and have to move further to get somewhere. You can be forced to pay more to build if you didn't get there first, but you can't be completely shut out of a city. You can lose out on a card you want if you don't pay attention to what resources others are hoarding and someone buys it before you. And during the game it's easy to tell how you are doing but very challenging to keep track of how well everyone else is doing so there are a lot of surprises. This is just one of the best games I've played.

This game has relatively simple strategies that largely rely on nuance. I don't really have an issue with that, and there's plenty of nuance, but I hit a wall after about 25 games (a combination of Yucata and in-person). The game shines for its different colors of track and how pushing them up contrasts with other various points-generating endeavors like the industry track. The bonus tokens provide some great strategic opportunities as well. The game is quite fun overall, and it's a nice worker placement.

This was the biggest surprise discovery for me because I thought it looked stupid when people ran a PBF a while back. Then Pete Vasi convinced me to give it a try at GenCon, and I fell in love. Somehow, two decks with only 5 different cards in them manage to have crazy levels of complexity and variety in strategies to play. I prefer to be Fremen in this one, but it's great trying to figure out what's going on too. Seriously an amazing game. I feel bad for taking so long to finally play it.

I played numerous games of this last year using PnP copies and the only thing that kept it off of my top 100 was the criteria that the games must currently be released (in the US). Now that the game has been brough over here (and the theme of it butchered), I can add it to my list! When I fit it into my list it seemed a bit low, but I couldn't justify raising the rating to an 8 (yet at least) and wanted to revisit it before I could decide whether it deserved to eclipse the next game on my list. ALl the same, this game is a real fun, light, and successful unique take on the social deduction genre (which becomes harder and harder to say as time goes on and the genre continues to see so many new releases).

I've actually had a couple of chances to buy this game, and have passed (despite decent prices)... but, what can I say, Space Alert covers the same thing, and, I haven't played that in ages either, so, why would I buy another game I'm not likely to play? I probably should have dropped this more, but, I really did like it...

The theme of this game is rather silly, but I still find myself getting into it. Who doesn't want to rob a train and shoot people? (Imaginarily, of course. Doing it in real life would be weird.) Anyway, Colt Express does a great job of incorporating some strategy and intriguing deck management mechanics with a fun theme in a very approachable family game. In that way, it's sort of the ideal Spiel de Jahres winner (at least for the modern version of the award). The character abilities provide a slightly different experience every time too, and it scales well.

This can be a fairly lonely game sometimes, and it can drag on with too many people, but, I think with 2 or 3 this is a really top notch deck-builder. Much better then scrabble. Which isn't saying much, but, hopefully being in the top 40 says a bit more. Check this game out if you haven't already!

The second largest drop on my list, this is yet another game that I really like but don't get to play often because the people I typically game with are less than thrilled with it (in this case it's due to the word game aspect of it).

The least that can be said about this game is that it was a fortuitous mash up of pre-existing genres which is evidenced by the smattering of word gamer games that have come out in the couple years since this was published. I am especially curious to try out the co-op variant of this some more.

The gimmick of pointing guns simultaneously at one another still hasn't lost appeal with me. I love the moment of seeing what everyone chose to do. The meta can be strong in this game. Man, this is another one I need to introduce to my family.

clublock wrote:
Cash and guns is a really fun party game. Everyone loves pointing guns at people, that's hilarious. But, with some groups, this game can really fall flat. The mechanics and nature of this game are confrontational, which is hilarious with the right group, but, often results in a blood bath with the wrong group. Which is also hilarious! So, that's not really a problem... but, games where take-that mechanics involve people tanking a game aren't exactly well designed. Sure, the issue is social, but, the mechanics allow for the social approach of burning people to the ground. Which is funny! Really! But, when it happens, it might leave for a fun time, but, it does not leave for a fun game play experience, which are two very separate things here. Very rarely does this game give both.

I haven't played this nearly as much as I've played Ascension for various reasons (e.g. that I got the Ascension iOS app for free back when it was still $4.99 for the base game but Star Realms base has always cost money), and I'm not totally sure what I think of it. I quite enjoy it, and it seems in some ways more skill-based than Ascension, but it also feels less wide open and thus a bit less interesting. It definitely has the major advantages of being quick and small, and it feels more like Magic: The Gathering (entirely logical, considering one of its designers was a Pro Tour player), so it's easy to introduce to fans of that. There's no doubt, however, that it's a solid entry in the deckbuilder genre, and I'd love to try its expansions at some point.

If you've read the Hanabi rules, I mean really read them, then you know that even if you get 2 points you didn't really ""lose."" Beyond Baker Street takes the essence of Hanabi and wraps it into an exciting game that is sort of about trying to solve a case before Holmes does. It differs from Hanabi in interesting ways, the most obvious of which is that you no longer need to play cards in order, but you still need to play the right cards. Games feel really tight without much room for error, but they also don't feel downright hopeless like they do in Hanabi sometimes.

ljtrigirl wrote:
It doesn't take Sherlock Holmes to deduce that Beyond Baker Street completely murdered Hanabi and then buried it in the back yard. Hanabi had reached this state of solved that I got bored playing with other people that had semi-mastered it and was just annoyed playing it with people that weren't at that level that I just stopped playing completely. But Beyond Baker Street takes that same mechanism and adds in variable player powers, more than just sequential colors, and an opponent to face off against. Plus, the theme actually matters and adds to the game.

I doubt I'll ever play another game of Hanabi, but I'll definitely play Beyond Baker Street!

Theme alone probably puts this on my list, if I'm being honest. XCOM, and you can play it solo?! It's actually not great solo, but never mind. I love the idea of an application controlling part of the game. It's sort of like a more modern version of those older electronic games from the 80s and 90s, just leveraging the electronics you already have! This game focuses on the strategic side of XCOM. (appropriately, I feel, given how many good tactical games are around) Each player is a different department head and carries different responsibilities, giving it a sort of Space Cadets feel. However, the time limits imposed by the game don't really fit. Why are big-picture strategic decisions being made with such tight time pressure? And I say this as someone who generally likes time limits. The game does, however, nail that gut-wrenching feeling of helplessness when your best soldier gets vaporized. That's a feeling I know only too well.

A gift from my wonderful and oh so generous Secret Santa this year, Above and Below is a delightful little game. I'm a little worried that the players that arbitrarily get luckier on the scenarios they encounter are the ones that win this game, but I've still got a bit of fun ahead of me exploring the scenarios even if that is true (and even if randomness is a factor, it's nice that there is some nice meat there unlike with other storytelling games).

This is simply a classic Euro. I'm often not a big fan of open-information hardcore Euros, but El Grande has some really innovative mechanics, from the bidding with cards for turn order to the different numbers of caballeros on those cards to complicate the strategy a bit. I've probably played this most of the classic Euros since I have friends and family who quite like it, and it was also the first legitimate Eurogame I learned, to my memory. It has so much room for strategy, and, somewhat rarely for a Euro, it's self-balancing and allows ganging up on the leader. This will continue to be a well-respected trailblazer, even if it falls off my personal Top 100.

Urza47 wrote:
When I first put this list together, it seemed obvious to me that Caverna would be higher than Agricola. But after having played it some, it’s flaws stick out a little more. Don’t get me wrong, Caverna is an absolute gem. A flawed gem, but a gem nonetheless. It wouldn’t be #11 if it wasn’t. I eventually concluded that if I were to play Agricola again today (which I would like to, as it’s been a while), the flaws of that game that were addressed by Caverna would come into sharper focus and I would wonder why I had ever doubted it.

The main improvements that Caverna makes are related to flexibility. There’s a lot more ways to get food, and it’s generally abundant enough that starvation isn’t a concern. Furthermore, most action spaces are several actions in one. (explicitly so for some with Agricola parallels) There’s also rubies you can get that be redeemed at any time, for almost any resource. A whole new mechanic is weapons: you can equip your dwarves and send them on expeditions; they’ll bring back a number of different items of your choosing, with options becoming more diverse and valuable as they increase in level. (yes, your dwarves have levels)

But the reason why I’m still pining for Agricola a bit, is that Caverna doesn’t have any of the cards that Agricola does. There’s no dealing or drafting of buildings or special abilities. Instead, there’s a wide variety of room furnishings that are static and available to everyone. This leaves the ordering of additional action spaces and the timing of harvests (unlike Agricola, the timing of these “feed your family” phases aren’t static) as the only random elements in the game. It leaves me wondering when (or if) the game, or at least the first few turns, will start feeling stale. There’s nothing to push you toward strategies outside your comfort zone except competition and opportunity cost. I haven’t yet gotten to that point, but it feels almost inevitable. But I’ll cross that bridge when I get to it. At least for now, I’m happy to put Caverna this high on the list.

There are no further expansions planned for Caverna (I don’t have the mini expansions, but would like to get them.), which saddens me, as I think this game with Agricola-style occupations would be amazing. The game will also go as high as 7 players (and has specific action spaces for use in a 7-handed game), which sounds ridiculous, but it’s something I’d love to try once.

Yet another ""great game I played once but haven't played since and its now been like two years"". I had a very high opinion of this game when I first played it, and, I didn't buy it because, hey - $90 is a bit steep. I figured it would go down in price. I saw it recently in a shop for like $170, and then again in a different shop for $145 (the box was damaged too). So... I guess this game has gone down in rank due to the price, really. Because that is goddamn ridiculous. I don't care if that's not fair - I want this game, but, I am not made of money.

This is probably my most played game of the last year, so it felt like it needed a big jump. And I listed Viticulture because I don't know how I feel about Tuscany yet. I feel the game loses a lot of it's tightness. I generally find it a struggle to get enough money early in the game and with many of the modules, it is so much easier to gather funds.

I definitely prefer playing with the advanced visitor cards though.

This game took a huge drop because it feels mostly played out now. By that I don't mean that I overplayed it, but that I don't think it has much more to offer me.

I didn't like that everything was always available in the base game so I was happy to buy the first expansion that changed that. But then I wasn't happy with the random swings due to card draw and how the game could slow to an almost stall if all high numbers come out at the start, but someone came up with the 4-4-2 variant on BGG (which has since been adopted as the mechanism for the Target exclusive version) which fixed the pacing issue.

My two main issues with why the game has dropped are: it plays a bit too long with the expansion (and, while it is much shorter, the base doesn't have enough variety) and I don't think I've seen a player win since adding in the expansion that didn't have a Tuna Boat. With the Harbor I don't understand how it isn't OP aside from the fact that you can't guarantee you'll be the only person to be able to obtain one.

contig wrote:
I have only played the base set, but I enjoy the building from the ground up, and getting more money as the game goes on. The passing of the dice (and getting something on opponents turns) is one of the thing I enjoy in Catan. There is a fair amount of luck here, but also enough strategy to make it work out.

Love: Getting a large amount of money on fairly common numbers, and the landmarks that give you basic powers (like rolling an extra die, or rerolling)
