In December 2014 I have started a public commitment not to buy myself any new games in 2015. Almost 50 people joined that commitment - each on their own terms - some for half of a year, some with spending limit. A lot of people fulfilled their commitment but for everyone it was a good occasion to learn something about themselves. At least it was for me.

Here is the original geeklist: Public commitment: Not buying new games in 2015

Next year, we applied what we learned in Public commitment: Not buying new games in 2016

In short: owning 65 board games, almost 200 pc games (many of them never played) and many roleplaying games and having limited playtime with two small kids I was buying more than playing. I was thinking "thats what I need, that will make my collection complete!". Compulsive buying was my problem. On the other hand I was constantly trading games away, even after 1-2 plays.

This year I want to make such commitment again as I found it good for me.

I have made myself few rules:

* I can't buy (or back) computer, roleplaying and board games for myself.
* I can, but only if they wish so, give games to my wife and daughters
* I can trade games - I participate in math trade 2 or 3 times a year trading maybe 2 games each time - I suspect this number to drop with stream of new games going dry
* I can get game as presents - I have birthday in October and usually get 1 or 2 games.

In the same time I want to focus on playing and getting fun from games I own.

If you think not buying games for a year would be something good for you, just add the item to the list and track your progress if you want

The above rules are the ones that I plan to conform to - feel free to use them also or outline your own in the entry. If you plan to set yourself a limit - thats fine (but stick to it !!! ).

I know that jumping in is leaving your comfort zone - it is for me - but just sit with this for one minute thinking if it would be good for you.

And we have a microbadge: mb !!!

This post is to keep my rules and updates throughout the year

Here are my rules:
* I can't buy (or back) computer, roleplaying and board games for myself.
* I can, but only if they wish so, give games to my wife and daughters
* I can trade games - I participate in math trade 2 or 3 times a year trading maybe 2 games each time - I suspect this number to drop with stream of new games going dry
* I can get game as presents - I have birthday in October and usually get 1 or 2 games.

Updates:

January:
- Participated in Math Trade - traded away Agricola (+exp) and Libertaria, got Pandemic Legacy (which we already played to death with 16 sessions in 10 days - wonderful game, instant 10/10) and Arkham Horror Card Game (which I'm not sure if I'll keep or pass on 2nd round of Mathtrade - game looks great but expansion model + this commitment = questionable trade).

February:
- In second round of Math Trade I traded away AH Card Game and Le Havre, got Troyes and Pillars of the Earth.
- Received my backers GoG copy of Torment Tides of Numenera.

March:
- I started running in January and I just ran my first half-marathon - doing hard not to overspend on this new hobby. Kinda as a reward I have bought myself few games on Gog sale - Broforce, Everspace, Ori and a Blind Forest - definately against my commitment, but urge to reward myself was stronger...
- I lost my copy of Cyclades - I have borrowed it to someone, but can't remember whom.

April:
- Participated in Math Trade - traded away extra copy of Pandemic for Roborally (2016).

May:
- I have bought Stellaris as part Humble Monthly. It was on my wishlist for very long time. I already played it for 34 hours and really enjoyed it.
- Traded away Troyes.
- I have signed up for Warsaw Marathon in September to keep myself motivated for running.

June:
- Deleted my Gog account.

July:
- All quiet on collection front, but got really hooked by Ascension on my phone (just free base game, no expansions).

August & September:
- No purchases, even skipped Mathtrade. During vacations had few good occasions to play - mostly Castles of Burgundy with my wife and Codenames with friends.
- Just run my first marathon (<3:48), but I strongly intend to get no reward purchases!

October:
- Had birthday and got 7th Sea and Blue Rose RPG.
- Participated in Math Trade where I traded Five Tribes and Roborally for Ascension Dreamscape and Letters from Whitechapel - both great - big hits for me and my wife!

November:
- Took part in NaNoWriMo - great event where thousands of people from around the world try to write a novel in one month.
- I came across this book: This Changes Everything by Naomi Klein ( https://www.amazon.com/This-Changes-Everything-Capitalism-Cl... ) - it is really a game changer for me. We are on a roller coaster laughing and drinking and buying stuff and the track is about to end. I feel that if enough people start talking about it and acting like it mattered we would be able to to create critical mass against "What can one person change?" apathy.
- Took part in rebel.pl Autumn context and won the main prize (coupon for 250 pln = ~70$ = Pandemic Legacy Season 2)!

So didn't do very well in 2016, bought and backed more than I should have. I am going to do better in 2017 as I've set myself the task of not buying or backing any new games with one exception -

I am going to get Pathfinder Adventure Card Game: Mummy's Mask – Base Set for my birthday early next year and I will pick up any character or adventure packs that come out for it.

Let's see how it goes

Update: First trade of the new year, got Oceanos for Warhammer Quest: The Adventure Card Game.

Update: Traded D-Day Dice for Isle of Skye: From Chieftain to King. Got my Kickstarter versions of Vikings Gone Wild and Herbaceous delivered.

Update: My birthday today, I got Pathfinder Adventure Card Game: Mummy's Mask – Base Set, Pathfinder Adventure Card Game: Mummy's Mask – Character Add-On Deck, Pathfinder Adventure Card Game: Mummy's Mask – Adventure Deck 2: Empty Graves, Pathfinder Adventure Card Game: Mummy's Mask – Adventure Deck 3: Shifting Sands, Pathfinder Adventure Card Game: Class Deck – Gunslinger and Pathfinder Adventure Card Game: Class Deck – Warpriest.

Update: Got my Kickstarter copy of The Dresden Files Cooperative Card Game and I'm very glad I backed it as it's and excellent game. I also bought!? Legendary Encounters: An Alien Deck Building Game, I know I said bought but the reason behind this is I sold a lot of my The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game cards and decided to get the Aliens game with the money as it is one I have wanted for a while now.

Update: Got my KS copy of Unfair.

Update: Traded 4 Runebound (Second Edition) card expansions for a KS copy ofMartians: A Story of Civilization.

Update: My KS copy of 5-Minute Dungeon arrived. Wait ages for one game and two practically turn up in a week of each other .

Update: Backed Baseball Highlights: 2045 Spring Training edition on Kickstarter just to get the new expansions. Myself and my daughter's enjoy playing this game and so I didn't think adding a few new expansions to a game we play a lot was a bad idea. I might amend my rules slightly to take into account any expansions that appear on Kickstarter to games we play regularly.

Update: Traded Fallen (Kickstarter version) for Galaxy Trucker: The Big Expansion, Tiny Epic Galaxies, Lords of Waterdeep and Lords of Waterdeep: Scoundrels of Skullport. I also bought Sylvion and here's why. I pre-ordered Nautilion at Christmas as a present but it still hasn't arrived in the country yet so I have decided to cancel the order and get the other game instead.

Update: Recent trades, Shephy for Oh My Goods!: Longsdale in Revolt and Oregon for The Castles of Burgundy: The Card Game

Update: Traded Mice and Mystics for Specter Ops. Got Star Realms and Star Realms: Gambit Set for Father's Day. Have slipped a little though as have backed Deep Space D-6 and 1066, Tears To Many Mothers. I was disappointed when I missed the D6 Kickstarter so jumped at the chance to back the 2nd edition as I really like solo games. 1066 just looks great, can be played solo and company is UK based which is rare so I try and support them when I can.

Update: Sold Ghost Stories and bought Cottage Garden with the money.

Update: Slipped quite bit recently as backed Fire Rescue: Tragic Events, Mint Delivery, Heirs of the Wizard King, and Penguin Brawl: Heroes of Pentarctica. I mainly backed these either because they where cheap and from my country, solo playable or for games we play a lot. I also sold a lot of my Heroes of Normandie stuff just recently so decided to back Gloom of Kilforth: A Fantasy Quest Game as I was disappointed I couldn't back it last year as I didn't have any spare cash.

Participated in the 2016 pledge with mixed results, but it did give me a new perspective on gaming and the buying/selling/trading of games in general. Because of my new perspective on games and gaming I am all in to try again in 2017. My rules for 2017 are going to be as simple as I can make them:

1. I cannot buy a new game - board, card, dice, miniature, computer, or otherwise - for myself unless I sell or give away two games first.

2. I can buy one expansion/accessory for games I already own per month after I have finished assembling/painting the items on my project table. (I do not expect to have the project table cleared before the end of 2017...)

3. I can buy games as gifts for others or as donations to charitable organizations.

4. I may receive games and expansions as gifts so long as the gift is unsolicited by me. I cannot hint or suggest that I might want or like one.

5. Any games which I do not play at least twice before the end of the year must be given away or sold and do not count towards buying a new game as outline in number 1 above.

My hope is that keeping it simple will make it easier for me to be successful in keeping to the rules I set for myself. I also hope thiw will allow me to spend more time on actually playing games in 2017 rather than worrying after how to acquire new ones or if my collection of games is the 'right size'. After all, I am a player of games not a collector of games.

One other thing I did differently this year was make my wife aware of this commitment. She is a non-gamer who is loving and gracious enough to allow me to be one. Any shortcomings I have with these goals I will own up to and discuss with her in the hopes it will improve our relationship.

Chaz

January Update

1. No new games purchased and I parted ways with a couple of the few remaining video games I had on hand. Will likely keep the remaining four as they are good for filling in those times when I cannot find anyone who wants to play a game.

2. Did not meet expectations on this one. Picked up several pre-built/pre-painted buildings for my wargame terrain collection. The prices were simply too goo to pass up.

3. Have not given any gifts or donations in the form of games this month.

4. My friends and family have very actively supported my goals this month by not getting me anything.

5. Of my 41 boardgames I played the following this month:

X5 Dominion: Intrigue
X5 Konexi
X4 Dweebies
X3 Cathedral
X3 Chess
X1 Catan
X1 Perry Rhodan: The Cosmic League

Not a bad start to the game playing for the year with 5 of my 41 already played enough to be kept. Hopefully, the monthly boardgame night I am hosting and having a son who is something of a gamer will help bump these numbers up.

February Update

1. No new games purchased for myself this month.

2. Managed to get through the month without falling of the wagon.

3. My eldest son caught the WarmaHordes bug so I helped him get started off by getting him the Menoth starter and a couple of extra warjacks.

4. And since no deed should go unpunished my son got me a Trollbloods starter and a dire troll. In reality this gives us enough to play each other as we learn the rules (even if it means my painting station is now overly full again...).

5. Of my 41 games I played the following so far this year:

X5 Dominion: Intrigue
X5 Konexi
x5 Magic the Gathering
x4 Chess
X4 Dweebies
x4 There's a Mouse in the House
X3 Cathedral
X2 Condottiere
x1 Battle Line
x1 Carcassonne
X1 Catan
X1 Perry Rhodan: The Cosmic League
x1 Star Trek Ascendancy

This means roughly a fifth of my boardgames are safe from attrition at year's end and I managed to keep to my goals meant to limit my spurious spending on games which I am quite happy about. Also not shown here I got more than two plays in for D&D (not to hard since we play a couple of times a month) so my roleplaying outlet will remain intact as well.

March Update

1. While I did not purchase any new games during March I did download a few video games I had previously purchased from GOG or the App Store. Mostly word games and other games which can fill in a few odd minutes here and there throughout the day. While this might be something of a cheat it does help me not buy anything new (and helps keep my mind engaged during boring bits of the day...).

2. Did pickup a few models and rulebooks for existing games this month. In part this was because of a 25% loyalty discount which was getting ready to expire and in part because of an update to the Flames of War rules and a restock of the Trollbloods book at my FLGS.

3. I was not as generous this month as I should have been. I think I need to find a way to improve on this.

4. My friends and family continued in their support of my efforts to not overload my game shelves. I really have mixed feelings about this, but am glad to have their support.

5. Of my 41 games I played the following so far this year (games with new plays are marked by asterisks):

*x6 Magic the Gathering
*X5 Battlefleet Gothic
X5 Dominion: Intrigue
X5 Konexi
x4 Chess
X4 Dweebies
x4 There's a Mouse in the House
X3 Cathedral
X2 Condottiere
*x2 Qwirkle
x1 Battle Line
x1 Carcassonne
X1 Catan
X1 Perry Rhodan: The Cosmic League
*x1 Runebound (Second Edition)
x1 Star Trek Ascendancy
**X1 Twilight Struggle

A fairly light month for gaming for me. Life just got really busy and overly messy this past month. Still, I was able to carve out an afternoon with a friend to play several games of BFG (which was so much fun!) and an evening to play Twilight Struggle with my best friend/gaming opponent (not technically one of my games but it goes on the list because of the quality of the game). Still struggling with the thought of giving up more games if they do not get played even though it is early in the year. Of course, I set the rules for myself so I really have no room to complain.

Hope everyone else is able to draw some meaning from their commitment. I know I am and I like to think I am better for it.

Chaz

April Update

1. Had a major set back in not buying things as the PS3 gave up the ghost and we replaced it with a PS4. Purchased several game titles along with the system; not a hardship but not in the spirit of my commitment.
Consider this a family purchase but still...

2. My son and I went on a mini spending spree to round out our respective Warma-Hordes factions even though we have not managed to get a game in yet. Set for our first couple of tries at the system this month.
Look forward to spending some time with him while he hands me my hat.

3. bought a PS4 for the family (not really a charity buy, but a bit of a stretch...). Also gifted some new games to people in the hospital. If nothing else I hope it helps pass the time while they are there.

4. Beginning to think this part of the commitment will be the easiest one to keep.

5. Of my 41 games I played the following so far this year. Games above the line are safe from being purged. Games with new plays are marked by asterisks:

*x8 Dominion: Intrigue
*x7 Chess
*x6 Battlefleet Gothic
x6 Magic the Gathering
x5 Konexi
x4 Dweebies
x4 There's a Mouse in the House
x3 Cathedral
*x3 Condottiere
x2 Qwirkle
*x2 Ticket to Ride: Nordic Countries
------------------------------------------------------------------------
x1 Battle Line
x1 Carcassonne
x1 Catan
*x1 Firefly: The Game
x1 Perry Rhodan: The Cosmic League
x1 Runebound (Second Edition)
x1 Star Trek Ascendancy
**X1 Twilight Struggle

Managed to get in a few more plays over the month and, maybe more importantly, have managed to schedule some games for the coming weeks and months with friends who have overly full schedules between work, family, school, etc. It will be good to see some of my friends at the table given how busy everyone seems to have gotten over the last several months. Looking forward to getting in more time at the table especially near the end of this month since I will be off for a week.

Chaz

May Update

1. No new game purchases this month, but I did continue to reduce the size of my collection. Am debating about whether or not to limit myself to a single shelf worth of boardgames. Given my disdain for things which sit around unused this is looking more and more likely.

2. Picked up a few things, a rulebook, the odd miniature, and expansion for Firefly, to roundout existing games but nothing for new games.

3. Gave several games away to younger gamers I know in the hopes they will be able to get more enjoyment out of them than I was able to (due to family, work, life, etc.).

4. My eldest son bought me a starter set and the hard cover rulebook for Warmachine. Was both unexpectedly generous of him and quite welcome.

5. Of my 36 games I played the following so far this year. Games above the line are safe from being purged. Games with new plays are marked by asterisks:

x8 Dominion: Intrigue
x7 Chess
x6 Battlefleet Gothic
*x6 Condottiere
x6 Magic the Gathering
x5 Konexi
x4 Dweebies
x4 There's a Mouse in the House
x3 Cathedral
*x3 Qwirkle
x2 Ticket to Ride: Nordic Countries
------------------------------------------------------------------------
x1 Battle Line
x1 Carcassonne
x1 Catan
x1 Firefly: The Game
x1 Perry Rhodan: The Cosmic League
x1 Runebound (Second Edition)
x1 Star Trek Ascendancy
*x1 War of the Roses: Lancaster vs. York

Almost feels like a gaming drought this past month with only a single night of gaming managed; even with a week's worth of vacation in the mix. Going to have to do something about this and soon.

I managed to do fairly well in 2016. I sold, donated, gave away or otherwise whittled games from my collection. Last year I mostly managed to stick to only buying games from the proceeds of selling off games. There were a couple of exceptions but on the whole I managed to do what I hoped I would. Don't aim for perfect or going cold turkey, pretty good can be more than good enough.

In 2017 I won't be buying games with the proceeds of sales as I have almost nothing left to sell. Next year needs to be about evaluating gaming options, resisting temptation and making a few sensible purchases that help me to get what I want out of gaming.

Given my experience in 2016, I'd strongly advise others not to set hard and fast rules for the 'challenge'. Don't necessarily limit yourself to x games or whatever.

Go with the flow and make sensible decisions as you find your life or circumstances change as the year goes on. By all means approach the challenge with an honest determination to achieve a certain something but also cut yourself a little slack.

Guidelines for Purchases in 2017:

+ Must be good/best with 2 players
+ Medium to medium/heavy weight/complexity is the sweet spot
+ Historical/farming/science/natural history themes are most appealing
+ Fantasy and sci-fi themes are not that appealing to us
+ Must NOT be too fiddly or need extremely precise interpretation of rules/actions
+ Preferably not too mean/not too much 'take that'
+ 60 to 90 minutes play time preferred
+ Must have good replayability (expansions are ok to add on if necessary)
+ Solo mode is a bonus
+ We like games that use dice in creative ways and have truly multiple paths to victory

Definitely Buying in 2017:
Arkham Horror Card Game expansions.

Bought in 2017
January: Arkham Horror Card Game - Dunwich Legacy expansion
February: Arkham Horror Card Game - The Miskatonic Museum, Railroad Revolution (birthday gift)
March: Arkham Horror Card Game - The Essex County Express
May: First Class, Lorenzo Il Magnifico, Oh My Goods, Port Royal + expansion

Games I'm thinking about:
Rule: New games must be played within 4 weeks of purchase (exceptions for unavoidable circumstances apply) or they have to be put up for sale immediately!

+ Fields of Arle expansion

Games removed from wishlist in 2017
Games that I have been thinking about that I've decided not to buy for one reason or another (mostly because I just don't need them).

The Manhattan Project: Energy Empire, Orleans, Eldritch Horror expansions, Sherlock Homes expansion, Nautilion, A Feast for Odin.

Unplayed Games - the list of shame
My list of unplayed games. Most of these have been set up and solo tested by me but I haven't followed through and taught them yet. We have partially tried out Amerigo but didn't finish it. Realistically, if any of these aren't played in 2017 then they should probably be sold. I'm thinking about introducing one new game each month.

Robin Crusoe: Adventures on the Cursed Island, Trajan, The Gallerist, La Granja, ZhanGuo, Signorie, Notre Dame, Keyflower, Ginkgopoli, Concordia, Castle of Burgundy, Amerigo, + Viticulture (played 2/1/17)

Same as before, 2 games, maybe one expansion. Except last year I used up my extra expansion on an RPG by Jason Morningstar.

So 2017 is just 2 games.

As of today, I'm thinking its gonna be between

Ricochet Robot
Samurai
Kingdom Builder
Through the Desert
Some Dominion Expansion
Loupin' Louie

My wife instead of two games for the year she'd let me buy ALL dixit expansions to date. I'm seriously tempted by that too...

I will participate with the following rules, which I already obeyed in 2016 — so I should do pretty well.

My rules for spending:
d10-1 Only spend what my gaming budget allows
d10-2 Budget started with CHF 0.- (that's $ 0.00 ) on January 2016
d10-3 Only way to improve my budget is by selling games (or receive vouchers in game-stores)
d10-4 I'm allowed to receive games as gifts
d10-5 I'm allowed to speculate with my gaming budget and buy games with the purpose of selling them with profit
d10-6 Shipping cost are part of the game cost and are paid with my gaming budget

I have to say that they worked really well. I'm not jumping the hype-train at all and ponder longer about a game (and ideally try to play it) before buying it.

Current budget: CHF 110.-

This is a bandwagon I can get on and be fully supported by my wife! My personal rules:

1. I am allowed to back one kickstarter game in 2017. This is because I will likely support Founders of Gloomhaven if it looks as good as I hope it will.
2. I am allowed to participate in Secret Santa 2017.
3. I am allowed to buy games for other people at birthdays and Christmas only if they really want the game.
4. I am allowed to receive games for myself for birthday and Christmas as gifts or use gift money to buy games - but I have to sell/give/trade from my collection at least twice the value of the game.

I want to make it more restrictive, but I think this has the best chance of surviving the year with #4 in place...

robot

October Update:

I have not strictly kept to my rules, but more I have been changing my mindset (which is really why I was signing up for this anyway).

1. I have ended up backing one kickstarter (champions of midgard) with an all in pledge, but decided to skip Founders of Gloomhaven in the end.

2. I still plan to participate in Secret Santa, so that is the same.

3. I have bought some games that are now in my collection for specific people. I picked up Cave vs. Cave for my wife, and I picked up Welcome to the Dungeon for my kids.

4. This is where I can't say I have been the best. I have so far traded/given away 24 games or expansions and received only 11 games back since making the commitment. Doing good right?

Then I succumbed to a flash sale (Darn you CoolStuffInc.com! ) and bought The Gallerist, Fields of Green, Notre Dame 10th Ann, Pandemic Legacy Red, Imperial Settlers Aztecs & Why Can't We Be Friends for a huge discount. I also picked up a copy of Police Precinct 2nd Ed. for half off during a freak Amazon price flux and bought a BIN auction of Android Netrunner to play with a friend. My (current) final indiscretion was to pre-order Charterstone because I wasn't going to pass that up. So, my record is more like 24 outgoing to 19 incoming.

Not what I was hoping for going into this, but actually I am feeling pretty good about it. I have about another 10-15 games that I am going to put up for the Jack Vasel Charity this year, and anything that doesn't go in that auction will be donated somewhere locally. The big difference is that my wife and I have been steadily going through the entire collection and playing stuff we haven't touched in years (sometimes ever). We now go by the guideline that if she isn't really enjoying a game after 3 plays then we will probably get rid of it. I am also following the guideline that if I haven't gotten a game to the table at least ONCE in the last year - I need to ask myself why and either start playing it again, or find someone else who will enjoy it themselves.

Cheers all and I raise my glass to those who have continued on this challenge, even if it hasn't turned out as planned.

End of October Mini-Update

Just signed up for Secret Santa again this year, but this was allowed. I have also started putting some of my trade games up for the Jack Vasel Charity Auction. A Killer Bunnies and the Quest for the Magic Carrot lot of the blue box and 6 other expansions (Auction Item 173 I think), and a trio of Fluxx games (Pirate, Family & Zombie editions) as Auction Item 174. If you read this and are interested in those - Go Bid! Help me meet my goals and support an awesome charity at the same time!

I have never participated, but I like the spirit! I've got a complementary initiative at the moment (zero waste), so "unnecessary" new games are definitely out (see below).

Mine will be a sporadic commitment, as I intend on attending GenCon in August, and this promise will be shattered in that week. But maybe I can put a limit on GenCon and stay true to the list...hmm....

Here are my rules:
* I can't buy board games for me or anyone else other than at GenCon
* I can't trade board games until after GenCon
* I can give games away to the local FLGS for credit
* I can use store credit for used games only
* I will spend no more than $200 on games at GenCon

We'll see how it goes.

This commitment is being carried over from last year since it really helped me make good purchasing decisions. I got rid of 4 boxes of games, picked up a few new ones and some expansions and really got a lot of play out of what I already own.

I have no place to store what I have, and never enough time to play what I have, but the new shiny thing always needs a good home, so here is my commitment.

Every day that I have change in my pocket, I throw it in a change jar on the shelf. Dimes and quarters get rolled eventually, and this is my game budget for the year. (Pennies and nickels go back into the cup holder in my car.)

My starting balance for the year is -$15, due to a late year purchase of a Lord of the Rings LCG deck. That gives me the complete Dwarrowdelf cycle, so should be enough to keep me busy for a while. Trades are OK, but the shipping cost comes out of the budget.

New rule-

No credit! I must have the money saved up before I can purchase. This should help deter impulse buys. (I totally failed at this rule)

Exception-

I can purchase Advanced Squad Leader materials as I like. There are a couple of big releases coming out this year, each of which would consume my entire game budget otherwise. ASL is my #1 game, this is always money well spent.

Update 1/1/17- starting balance -$15.
Update 1/19/17 - rolled $15, so balance is now 0.
Update 1/31/17 - nothing purchased in January.
Update 2/25/17 - rolled $25, nothing purchased so balance is $25. Auctioning off a very old RPG so trimming the collection a bit. Unlike last year, I don't get to add the money to my budget but that just balances all the ASL I will buy this year.
Update 3/21/17 - rolled another $10, still no purchases. Just enjoying playing what I have. Plus, un-retiring this year has reduced time to spend lusting after new games. Balance is $35.
Update 4/1/17 - rolled another $10, balance hit $45, enough for one of the games on my list- Burgle Bros! Order placed, total, with shipping is $44.98. So balance drops to $0.
Update 4/10/17 - Rolled $5 just so I could buy the Onirim app. Balance is $4 and Onirim comes off the want list.
Update 4/30/17 - Rolled $10, nothing bought. Balance is $14.
Update 5/21/17 - rolled $20, but not enough to cover the purchase of Space Cadets : Away Missions. Amazon had it on sale for $43, so I gave myself permission to fail a bit. Balance is -$9.
Update 6/11/17 - Rolled $15, so back in the black. Balance is $6. WBC next month so it may all go to hell then. We'll see.
Update 6/18/17 - Another fail, and I'm pretty happy about it. Reprints of the Hunt for Gollum series showed up at my FLGS. Since I've been chasing these for the last 6 months, I snapped up the ones I was missing. balance is-$31.
Update 6/30 - Rolled $10, so current balance is -$21. It's about to get worse though, since I entered 3 games in a math trade and postage counts against my budget. And WBC coming up in 3 weeks... Removing Legendary Encounters - Aliens from the want list. Gradually lost interest I guess.
Update WBC 1 - Played Scythe twice and cant decide if I like it or not. I can see why people do, it is very well crafted and a tight design. But I'm not big on engine builders so there needs to be more to the game to keep me into it. There is more, but is it enough? No game bought, and I sold three boxes of games at the auction store. Just need to stay strong when the dealer's room opens later today!
Update WBC 2 - Just realized I spent the week walking past Terraforming Mars and wondered why. Didn't try to play it, and the chances of getting to play it after leaving here mean I don't need to own it. Terraforming Mars and Scythe come off the want list. On the other hand, got a chance to examine the contents of the Roll for the Galaxy expansion and was impressed by the content. Wish the price was a bit gentler though.
Update 8/4 - Rolled $25, balance is -$12.
Update 8/26 - Rolled $15, to get my head back above water. And decided to buy myself a birthday present. Attila the Hun: The Roman Empire in the East. Balance is -$47.
Update 9/20 - Rolled $10, balance up to -$37. Traded an extra copy of Hannibal for Terraforming Mars, which both of us are pretty satisfied with so the best kind of trade, and as a bonus no shipping.
Update 10/20 - Rolled some coins but bought a used videogame, so balance is still -$16. Also went to ASLOK and spent $200+ on ASL stuff but that is my one exception so I have no regrets. The nice thing about ASL is you can always sell it for at least what you paid, at least the MMP and better 3rd party products.
Update 11/18 - Rolled another $20, so back in the black at $4. Which isn't nearly enough since War Time was just released. I playtested that 5 or 6 years ago and it's great to see it finally make it into print. That plus another Leaving Earth expansion. Can I make it to the end of the year?

The Want List, now featuring trending thumbs!

Mage Knight

Roll for the Galaxy : Ambition Expansion: thumbsup

War Time

Leaving Earth Expansion II

And just for fun, picked up the Cup of Cthulhu at the Corning Glass sale yesterday. I'm not even a Cthulhu guy, just couldn't pass up something so unique. Fear this!

And fear my inability to upload an image that doesn't come out sideways! C'mon BGG, would it be so terribly hard to add a rotate button instead of the 267th emoji? Sheesh.

End of 2017 Recap

With the year winding down, it's time to look back and evaluate how it all went. I'm not in this challenge to save money; I spend plenty on this hobby and don't consider it wasted at all. I do have some guilt about games I own but will never play, and just a cluttered house in general.

Assuming I don't have a late purchase, I will finish the year in the black, with maybe $30 or so available. Starting with a $15 deficit, it looks like the year was a success. Not counting ASL stuff, here's what I bought:

Burgle Bros, played many times.
Onirim (digital), glad I got the iPad version because of all the shuffling. It's OK but for a dollar I can't complain.
Space Cadets Away Missions, started hot but cooled considerably and will probably sell at some point.
LOTR card packs, which I enjoy but find overpriced or under-enjoyed, not sure which yet.
Postage for a math trade, Ottoman Sunset. I enjoy it for a quick dip into history.
Attila the Hun: Roman Empire in the East. Desperately wanted, yet it sits on the shelf unplayed... this is why I still need this list.

On the bright side, I did sell off three full boxes of games. See you all in 2018!

In for year three.

Alright, here is my first shot at my rules:

10 new games. From any source. The two kickstarter games I expect to receive in 2017 are included in this count, so that really leaves me 8 games. (In reality, I will be happy if I can keep it down to 12 new games)

- Exception: And games my sons receive as gifts for major holidays/birthdays will not count towards this limit. I already have a personal rule that I don't want to buy more than one game for each of them for birthday/christmas.

- Exception: Simple PnPs are not included. ( this includes things like Utopia Engine, 30 Rails, or Delve: The Dice Game).

-------------------------------------

1) PitchCar ( purchased 1/29 )
2) at the gates of loyang ( purchased 4/25)
3) nemos war ( kickstarted jan 2016, arrived 6/29)
4) midnight legion: Operation Deep sleep ( arrived 6/20, gift )
5) 7th Continent (arrived 8/5, kickstarter)
6) 7th Continent Expansion on Kickstarter ( backed 10/11 )
7) firefly: the game (11/15?, sold 11/29)
8) foe hunters ( 11/19)
9) pandemic legacy season 2 (11/25)
10) spirit island (11/30)

I'm going in the shallow end here.

We are having our first baby any day now. I realise that my life is about to change in ways I cannot even comprehend.

I think this list is a great initiative, and somehow I need to get on it. However, I've more or less already stopped buying games. I still buy expansions to games I love and I plan to buy games at Essen. Oh, and maybe SeaFall.

I chose Cthulhu Wars for this entry because I jumped on the Onslaught Two Kickstarter campaign a year ago and so next year will begin by me getting swamped by wierd plastic minis. And so I come to the essence of my situation: My wife and I have a spare room for hobby activities. This room contains games and sowing materials to fill at least two specialist stores (I'm exaggerating). In about a year or two, this room will (hopefully) become a children's room.

Last year I did my first venture into trading games here in BGG. I traded away a Chainsaw Warrior and a Chaos Marauder for a Chaos in the Old World. While this is not exactly getting rid of games, it's a baby step for me because it's the first time I've ever done anything like this.

And so I come to my (baby step) rules for 2017:
* I can only buy SeaFall or expansions to games I own (Essen is I may buy one game as an exempt from this rule but try to get a grip of yourself in the messe and I may commit to one kickstarter campaign of a game that I do not previously own).
* When I trade I must do trades that reduces the number of games I own. Failing this I cannot do trades that increases the number of games I own.
*During 2017 I must do at least one trade or sell at least one game during the spring and one trade or sell during the autumn.

Writing these rules I see that they will not help me in the long run to accomplish my goals. Rather, they are a "tutorial level" for 2018, and hopefully I'll learn something about myself in the progress. When the day comes that my unborn child need a room if its own, I can either have an exquisite (and small) game collection in the living room, or a large (and unwieldy) game colletion in our storage. I know what I'd prefer.

May update:
So, my son Eugen was born December 11, 2016. Suddenly we're in late spring. I don't know what happened with time but life really starts anew when you're a parent. It's like my previous life, only better!

Since both me and my wife are gamers, we have managed to invite some friends over and play a game now and then. It works for now.

I have broken my rules once; I found an old copy of Age of Renaissance on eBay that I just 'had to' buy. I've also commited to the Bios:Origins kickstarter but only the upgrade kit so I consider that a legit investment according to the rules.

Having a weekend by myself (the first since my son was born) I'm going over my old collection and all games that I need to sell to reach my goals. I've decided to try to sell some games through the BGG Marketplace - I'm more comfy on this site than on eBay - and see how it goes. This means that my initial goals of trading games might not be met but should I sell a game I'd count that as a trade.

Also, the Cthulhu Wars Onslaught Two items is coming any week now - if it comes before I've cleared out the room sufficiently, Cthulhu and friends will honestly have to live in the cellar until I'm done with this.

July update:
The Cthulhu Wars kickstarter finally came, a year and a half after the kickstarter ended. Oh boy, the shear amount of stuff. My wife jokingly playes around with the phosphorescent Great Old Ones, making them march in line to different children's tunes. She now has that serious look on her face when she's talking about the state of the hobby room/future children's room though. It's time to gear up and get some stuff out of here.

I've managed to sell a game in the first half of the year, so my spring-goal was a success; I've sold my copy of Descent. This means that I tried the waters of the BGG Bazaar but my initial impression is somewhat negative - the cost to ship games outside of Sweden is just far big. I'm now putting up seven games for sale in a domestic market on facebook. Hopefully this will be easier sells.

Due to me breaking the rules earlier this year, I'm "punishing" myself by scrapping Seafall from my "permitted to buy"-list. Maybe next year! I'm still buying more than I'm selling - thus far I've bought the Breakthrough expansion for Memoir'44, I've ordered some GemChips, I'm in the Bios: Genesis/ Bios: Megafauna kickstarter and I got Codenames as a gift.

But I've also identified several games that I'm ready to get rid of. Since my problem is about shelf space and not money, my final solution if I cant get the games sold is to give them to charity. But I'd prefer if my games would find a place in a loving gamers home.

September update:
Sold several games on the domestic trade group on facebook. This seems to be the way forward and I'll keep selling during the autumn. Essen coming up but I don't expect to buy anything. I'm not going - that's a good way not to buy - but I might have "mules" ready if anything extrordinarily exciting shows up.

October update:
Ok, so I've invested in the 7th Continent kickstarter, all-in. But I'm not buying any games in Essen this year. I'm changing the rules as I go along. I'm trying to substitute rules that would give the same payload of games.

This is a fun thing, let's do it!

Playing more games helped me to refine my tastes, and to spot which game I may like, and which games to avoid. I'm still learning, butI'm getting better with each passing day (or so I hope).

My rules (similar to others', but hey, we're family! ):

* I can buy, or back, games only with my budget.

* My budget consists in cash I made selling games. Or on every penny I can spare from my usual, day-to-day, spending.

* I can trade games - I love participating in Math trades! (shipping is paid with gaming budget)

* I can get game as presents - I have birthday in February.

*I need to have enough cash to participate in JVMF 2017

To be honest, I started this trend in July. But let's do it in style in 2017!

I wear my Halloween costume all year round!

I started a modified version of this challenge for 2016, and was reasonably on pace, but eventually stopped tracking it because I realized that I didn't particularly care about my stated goals as long as my purchases were reasonable.

These were my three variants of the challenge for last year:
*Buy no new games or expansions at all, except for one new game and some new expansions chosen in advance for each quarter.
*Spend no more than a dollar per day on board games.
*Buy no more than one game per month.

These were some issues that I had with my previous challenge:
*I actually don't care about absolutely minimizing my expenditures; I'd rather pay slightly more to purchase a game from a local store rather than online.
*I don't see buying games as an intrinsic problem; I'm more concerned with balance and moderation. Going to the opposite extreme of buying almost nothing doesn't contribute to balance or moderation.

So upon reflection, the actual issues that I want to address are these:
*I want to make sure that we're not buying new games faster than we can play them.
*I want to make sure that we're playing games in depth, rather than moving on too quickly to the next new thing.
*I want to make sure that our game collection isn't growing in an out-of-control fashion.

In other words, there was one major factor missing from my previous challenge: any consideration of what I'm actually playing. To achieve balance, my purchases should be in line with my plays. And so I've devised a new version of the challenge for this year.

This Year's Challenge
I'll allow myself to buy one new game whenever:
*A previous game in our collection reaches 10 plays for the year, or
*We decide to get rid of a game.

Based on current numbers, this would have allowed me to purchase about 15 games this year, not too far off from last year's game-per-month rule. But the new challenge will be more responsive to my actual gaming situation.

I'm not going to worry about expansions this time; it was a bit of a pain last year to decide whether a small expansion counted as half a game or what, and I don't think we ever had a problem with out-of-control expansion purchases. So I'll just continue to buy expansions as I see fit.

Here's to balance!

Games Played 10 Times
Race for the Galaxy
Flash Point
The Game
Pandemic Iberia
Jump Drive
Kingdom Builder
Star Realms: Colony Wars
Dominion (Empires)

Games Purchased
*Pandemic Iberia (December 2016)
*Jump Drive (husband)
Kanagawa
Orient Express

Difference (purchases earned but not yet made): 4

January
*No new games purchased!
*2 pre-ordered (Pathfinder) expansions arrived; not relevant for this challenge but worth noting anyway
*1 game ordered at the end of December arrived in January because our mail was being held while we were out of town
*1 game (Race for the Galaxy) reached 10 plays

I think I could probably justify purchasing a game by excluding the December purchase, but I'll try to hold off anyway.

The game that I'm most tempted to buy at the moment is Tyrants of the Underdark.

February
*No new games purchased!
*1 pre-ordered (Pathfinder) expansion arrived; not relevant for this challenge
*No games reached 10 plays (but we logged another 10+ plays of RftG)

Phew, my resolve held out and I didn't rush off to buy Tyrants of the Underdark (though I would still like to get it). I think we're now close enough to our second set of 10 that I can wait a bit longer, so I'll say that the December purchase that arrived in January *does* count as Purchase #1 for this year. In other words, the purchase that I "earned" by reaching 10 plays of a game has already been used up by that new acquisition. So I need to reach 10 plays of a second game before I can purchase another new game.

We're at 7 plays of The Game and 5 plays of Dominion, so it shouldn't be too long. But I'll try not to use up all my allowed game purchases immediately, because I know there will be more new hotness (and tempting sales) in the second half of the year.

March
*No new games purchased!
*1 pre-ordered (Pathfinder) expansion arrived; not relevant for this challenge
*2 games reached 10 plays (Flash Point and The Game)
*2 purchases earned and not yet made

The challenge continues to go well. Somehow knowing that I have the flexibility to purchase some new games actually makes me less likely to purchase them, because I want to save and enjoy the purchase space that I've earned. So I'm very happy with how this challenge is going overall.

I'm still tempted by Tyrants of the Underdark, but the temptation is weaker than at some times in the past. I'm also somewhat tempted by Kanagawa, more on the basis of the artwork than the gameplay.

And I know I need to save space for some future purchases, notably Pandemic Legacy 2 and Orient Express, both of which are expected later this year.

But I'm still quite satisfied with the games in our collection, and there's plenty more enjoyment to be had there. I think it helps that we've been playing with other people once or twice a month, enjoying their collections, which means I get to try plenty of new games. And just this past month I played a couple of new-to-me games from our own shelves, Five Tribes and San Juan, both of which I enjoyed and plan to play more. Plus I'm newly optimistic about Pandemic Iberia, my one purchase this year so far (technically late last year); we just tried one of the historic disease variants and it made the game much better.

In terms of numbers, there are a few more games that could potentially reach 10 plays before too long: Dominion (7), Pandemic Iberia (4), and San Juan (2). That San Juan number is still low, but considering that we were playing it as a substitute for Race for the Galaxy, which has already reached 24 plays for the year, I'm reasonably optimistic.

Tracking Update
I'm no longer going to do the monthly updates, for various reasons including space considerations. Instead I'll just make a list above of which games I've purchased and which games have reached ten plays. I'll post a comment when I have something extra to say.

Sounds good. I'm on a mission to remove 100 games or expansions from my collection. I've already, in just few weeks, removed 65. Of course, any benefits from that will be ruined if I get new stuff, so...

I'm not saying I'll buy just five games in 2017, but that's the spirit: for each game I buy, I will consider "if I were to buy just five games this year, is this one of them" and only buy if the answer is yes.

Maybe I'll end up with just five games, maybe less and definitely not much more.

Also, I will limit review copies asked to the games I really want.

Expansions to well-loved games get a free pass and are not counted, but even there it's never an automatic buy but a question of "will this add value?".

So here's the score so far (updated Oct 22nd):

Games I've bought to keep:

– Terraforming Mars. I tried the game before I bought it.
A Feast for Odin. Bought untried, fortunately turned out just as interesting as I expected.
Twenty One. Visited Amsterdam, wanted a souvenir, bought a copy of this.
John Company. Placed a preorder for this game, because it seems to hit so many keys.
Mombasa. Enjoyed this a lot when I tried this, and got a good price.
Nusfjord. Preordered; a new Uwe game, with lots of good things about it.
Transatlantic. Also preordered, because Concordia is such a good game and I want to see how Gerdts has developed it further.

Games I've bought for temporary use:

Exit: The Game – Secret Lab. I wanted to give the escape room games a go, especially as Exit won the KdJ. I bought a used copy. After making the decision, I ended up playing a different Exit game and found out these are quite fun, so definitely a worthy purchase, especially as this won't be lingering around in my collection.
Unlock!. Another purchase for my professional interests, and another temporary game that will leave the collection once it's been used. This one I bought new.
Escape the Room: Mystery at the Stargazer's Manor. Again, another temporary escape room game bought used to be played and sold off. (Got a review copy for the Finnish edition, too, so played that. The Finnish copy I already gave away, and the English copy I've arranged to trade for a Exit: The Game.)

Expansions and upgrades to old games:

– Monikers: SU&SD expansion + other two expansions with it. The price was a fraction of what they usually are, and this is my favourite party game.
Concordia: Britannia & Germania. I like Concordia, and this should make it better with just two or three players.
Brass: Lancashire. Will sell my old copy of Brass and replace it with this.
Hero Realms: Character Packs. Bought the full set. I've played Hero Realms more than 60 times this year with my son, so no doubt about this.
Deus: Egypt. I'm a big fan of Deus, so I wanted to see what the expansion was all about. It's fine, I guess - nothing super special though.
Terraforming Mars: Hellas & Elysium. A big favourite of mine, and an expansion that seems quite useful.

Trades

– Concordia. Traded for this after looking for the game for a while. A good exchange: traded 1-for-1 and even got money in the trade.
On the Underground. Got this highly wanted and highly priced game in trade for Zertz – had to buy a new copy of Zertz, though, as I didn't want to get rid of my old copy.
– Lautapelaamaan math trade had me trading nine games and 6 euros of money to receive six games and 40 euros of money. Of those six games, one will be given as gift, one will be sold soon for profit and four will join the collection, at least for now. Update: after playing the games I found out only two will join the collection permanently.

Games I'm thinking about buying

An Infamous Traffic and For-Ex. Buying from Hollandspiele is expensive, but these two pique my interest a lot.

My game budget is currently 177 euros on the positive side: I've sold more than I've bought.

So, I'm just going to make it a straight budget equation.
$45 per month plus any money I make selling other games.

This is a reduction from 2016 to the tune of 25-50%.

Thought I am worried because I want to Cthulhu wars when the new core set launches early next year.. and I think that's 200$+

How do we keep each other accountable?

Very clever challenge you've come up with and one that I find interesting enough to join in on.

As a recent university graduate, my life is ahead of me and I'm planning to move in with my girlfriend before the end of the year. This will do massive damage to my overall budget, but I look forward to live with someone I really love.

A reduced overall budget means also a reduced board game budget. And I already own over 100 games (which are played regularly thanks to my girlfriend who was not originally a gamer), so it makes sense to cut back on the buying.

Therefore, I issue the following rules:
-I can't buy board, card, dice games in all their forms except at Spiel 2017 with a limited budget of €400. This includes accomodation, food, drinks and travel to Spiel.
-I can trade and sell games. If sold, half of the "profits" go to my savings account and half can be put into the Spiel budget.
-I can get board games as gifts AND I can buy them to be used as a gift. This is a rule focused on BGG Secret Santa 2017 (which will be my second time as a Secret Santa)

Small note: I am not easily convinced when it comes to buying board games. Therefore, I do not regularly buy games, but a collection of 100+ titles is more than enough as I am a gamer, not a collector.
Consequently, I tend to buy games a few times a year and mostly at Spiel. Over there, I buy new releases but also hunt for good deals on older titles that are on my wishlist.

Good luck to all participants!

This is my second crack at the "not buying new games" challenge. My previous attempt was for 2016, and that went extremely well for the first 10 months of the year, then fell apart in November. I almost made it to the end, but buying one game lead to buying another, and then I wanted to make the free shipping threshold ("look how much I saved!"). Ugh.

But 2016 was still a big success: I bought fewer games than I have in years, I stayed away from Kickstarter, and I played more games than I have in a long time.

So let's see if I can come up with rules that I can stick with for the year:

- no new computer or console games (I have a massive backlog as it is)
- buying iPad games are ok, but only using existing iTunes balance
- I can buy at most two new games, and can only use Christmas gift money
- I can ask for two games at most for each of my birthday and Christmas
- buying/receiving expansions may count as a partial game if they are small
- LotR LCG expansions are exempted (this is a weakness I need to work on), but I must make a better effort to play the game in 2017
- new games must be played at least five times in the first couple of months after opening them
- and NO Kickstarter games!!

Once I post a November update to my 2016 "no new games" entry, I may come back and modify these rules. I need to ponder how I fell off the wagon after doing so well for so long...

Kickstarter games bought ages ago, but should arrive in 2017

War of the Ring Anniversary Edition (ok, not really KS)
The 7th Continent
Cthulhu Wars: Onslaught 2

Games I might buy in 2017 or ask for as a gift

Runebound (Third Edition)
Through the Ages: A New Story of Civilization
Arkham Horror: The Card Game
Warhammer Quest: The Adventure Card Game
Akrotiri (waited too long, can't find now)
The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game expansions

My rules:

* I may get games as gifts.
* I may buy 2 games for myself in 2017.
* I may buy a 3rd game as a weight loss reward.

We shall see how it goes . . .

Game 1: Expansions for "Time's Up: Title Recall" 1/12/17

Game 2: "Dragonwood" 4/6/17*

*But ~~ other "cheating" listed below.

Game 3: (Off the wagon) "Seven Dragons" 4/9/17
I was on a Dragon kick. I also played "Emerald," which had
simply been resting on the shelf until now.

Game 4: (First bounce after falling off the wagon) "Sagrada" 4/27/17
Eye Candy, and Dice combo was more than I could resist.

Game 5: "Treasure Hunter" 5/10/17 I still really struggle with mid
weight or light games that seem to be a great deal.
(Under $20, especially.) That's my weakest point.

Game 6: "Poseidon's Kingdom" 5/17/17 $52.00 at Miniature Market
** sigh ** Have looked at it for years; and could finally justify buying.

Game 7: "Get The Cheese" 5/26/19 Unreleased little card game at
BGG.Spring Con. (The artwork reminds me of Remy in
"Ratatouille")

Game 8: NOT A CHEAT! As a gift from my game group friends, I got
"Harry Potter Hogwarts Battle" which I LOVE. 6/6/17

Game 9: Phooey. "Trekking the National Parks" I played this one at BGG.Spring
con, so at least I already know I really like it. $56.59 6/29/17

Game 10: "Africa" Very old Knizia game. Fell into the "hard to find" trap. $63.19 7/14/17

Game 11: "Ranglin' Rabbits" I love GameWright dice games! $9.93 8/18/13

UPDATE: I gave away "Sagrada," purchase #4, as a birthday gift to a friend. So, my number of games purchased should probably go down by 1.

Game 12: "Portal of Heroes" Impulse buy. Inexpensive, and looked interesting. 11/13/17 It's been so long since I bought a game, I'm not too worried about it!

Game 13: "Obsession" I backed the Kickstarter for this Jane Austen-esque game. I make no apologies for this one. IT'S JANE AUSTEN!

(Edited to put the numbered slots in for my purchases, 'cause I saw everyone else doing it, and it's cool.)

(Edit 2: Purchase made. Has anyone else already violated their rules, and fallen off the list? )

(Edit 3: Purchase 2)

(Edit 4: The Horrible Truth)

(Edit 5: Seem to be on a mini-binge lately)

(Edit 6: Cracking under the strain)

(Edit 7: One buy at a .CON isn't too bad, is it?)

(Edit 8: Thanks, Guys!)

(Edit 9: Like I said, phooey.)

(Edit 10: soblue )

(Edit 11: blush )

(Edit 12: I think not buying is, finally, kicking in! Hooray!)

(Edit 13: IT'S JANE AUSTEN!)

I went for an entire year in 2011 without buying games, but my old habits are creeping back. I don't buy as many games as I used to, but I still have too many games that have remained unplayed (or played only once). Here are my rules for 2017:

1 I still have some money left in my gaming budget, but I am going to start at $0 in January (and no more purchases for this year) and can only buy games once I have sold games to put into the budget.

2 I can back Brasil if it goes up on kickstarter in 2017.

3 I can add $100 to my budget if I reach my goal weight. This would be a great incentive for me.

4 I can receive games as gifts.

5 I can put $10 into my gaming budget for every 5 games I play that are currently on my unplayed (or only played once) list.
