This is my third year doing an unplayed list and so far i'm 1 for 2 in my attempts. The 2015 list was a failure but I was able to redeem myself with my 2016 list thanks to finding a local couple who my wife and I now play games with a couple of times a month. Now that I have the ability to play games more often, I thought I'd give this another shot in an attempt to really get my number of unplayed games down. Will I be successful? I don't know but I'll try my best to get the following games to the table in 2017.

Progress:
01/01/2017 - 2 of 17 played
01/21/2017 - 3 of 17 played
01/28/2017 - 4 of 17 played
02/11/2017 - 5 of 17 played
02/26/2017 - 7 of 17 played
03/12/2017 - 8 of 17 played
03/22/2017 - 9 of 17 played
03/26/2017 - 11 of 17 played
03/29/2017 - 12 of 17 played
04/08/2017 - 13 of 17 played
05/21/2017 - 14 of 17 played
07/30/2017 - 15 of 17 played
09/03/2017 - 16 of 17 played
10/08/2017 - 17 of 17 played

Got this for a steal on Amazon and after playing a couple of Feld's other designs, I'm hooked.

02/26/17 - Played this with our friends who had played a few times already. Like all Feld designs, there is a lot going on and many ways to score but the rules are straightforward so it's all about optimizing your play each turn. I enjoyed this game just as I have the other designs of his that I've played. There's a balancing act to the game and I did a pretty good job taking all scoring options into consideration, enough so that I came in second. What really hurt me was not advancing on the player order track for almost the entire game. I stayed as last to play each turn which hurt me when getting progress bonuses and buying goods multipliers for end game scoring. I don't know if I would have won had I moved up but it definitely would have helped. My copy of this game is still in shrink but I look forward to opening and punching out all the many cardboard chits and dropping cubes into the very clever cube tower.

I'm a fan of Pirate themed games and I've been impressed with some other titles by Space Cowboys. It's light weight and minis should go over well I think.

7/30/17 - This game is extremely confrontational so the group didn't love it. I liked it, partially because I won, but there was a lot of down time between turns that didn't force players to pay attention until their turn really. I would be willing to play this again but it probably won't see the table anytime soon.

I have the Farm Fresh Edition that was released in 2016 by Hyperbole Games. This has been near the top of my list to get to the table but it hasn't made it because I had to finish last year's list first. I'm a big fan of card games and take that is a definite favorite mechanic of mine so I know I'll enjoy this.

2/26/17 - Started off our game day with this because it was lighter than the other games we planned on playing. The rules are very straightforward and easy to understand so teaching this to even non-gamers would be a breeze. Everyone really liked the art but half of the group aren't really into take that style games so it wasn't as well received as I had hoped. I personally LOVED it, putting aside the fact that I stole victory away during the final turn by completing a 10 point crop and playing Farm Futures that gave me $1 for each crop card I had harvested. So I went from last at $25 up to $39 and won a very close game $39-$37-$36-$35. Games with a take that mechanic are some of my favorites because I like a lot of direct player confrontation. The funny art, straightforward rules, and take that mechanic will keep this on my shelves indefinitely.

Got this with my 2016 birthday Amazon dollars and I friends of ours have a copy so I know this will get played at some point. Dexterity games aren't the easiest to get to the table, despite my appreciation for them, but this is a must play.

03/12/2017 - Played a four player game of this with our friends, two teams, boys versus girls. We split the two scenarios we got through but had other games to play so a tiebreaker wasn't played. Honestly, I'm glad. I was incredibly disappointed by this game. Don't get me wrong: the production is great, the theme is somewhat immersive, and I get the appeal but it just didn't do anything for me. I really enjoy dexterity games but this one is beyond fiddly which really sucked out any of the fun I was having. Glad I didn't open my copy yet because this one is going on the trade pile in shrink.

Another 2016 release from Hyperbole Games is this really interesting poker style game with a wizardy magic theme. This was another game that I really wanted to get to the table last year but just ran out of time. None of our poker playing friends are local so it'll take some quick teaching to get others up to speed before busting this one out.

04/08/17 - With my birthday being yesterday, I decided that as a present to myself, I would demand that this get played. I decided to teach the four of us the classic version of this game that strips away every except the basic spells. Even without the advanced spells and being able to use the Owl cards, I enjoyed how it played. Christine said she really enjoyed it and wanted to play it again soon so that's an automatic win in my book. I can't wait to try the full version and really start exploring it deeper.

I got this early last year during one of the Barnes and Noble clearance sales. I love abstracts so I'd love to give this one a go very soon. It's ability to play up to 4 players helps the chances of getting this one to the table.

01/01/2017 - Played a 4 player game of this with our game group. Everyone seemed to be looking to maximize their score and not worry about blocking others, which end in 2 people maxing out all of their columns. The two of us that didn't came pretty close. More aggressive blocking in future games might make this play better.

One of only two Kickstarter games on this list, Karmaka, has a really interesting theme that grabbed me. The art really put it over the top, causing me to back it without really knowing if the gameplay was worth it. From the reviews since it's release, I'm pretty happy with having pledged even without playing it yet.

03/26/2017 - Our friend Shawn came over to play games with us so I was able to get this to the table against him and Christine. The artwork is BEAUTIFUL and is almost enough of a reason to keep it no matter how the gameplay is. I thought the game definitely has something there with the simple mechanics but as Christine said ”it felt like we were playtesting rather than playing a finished product”. I tend to agree with her there. I don't know if maybe it plays better at just 2 or if 4 would be a better fit. I would like to give it another shot now that I know the cards and their abilities but I don't see anyone asking to play this anytime soon so it'll be on the trade block until that happens or a good trade comes through. Disappointed that this wasn't better.

HABA had a great sale going on last year right after this was nominated for the 2016 Spiel des Jahres award. I grabbed this for me and a bunch of other titles for the kids. It's definitely lighter than the designs I've been enjoying lately but I've heard good things.

02/11/17 - Played this with Christine and our friends in a four player game. The game is very straightforward but it didn't take away from having to make meaningful decisions. I inadvertently cut off one of my explorers from being able to move but it ended up being a blessing in disguise. You aren't likely going to be able to get all four explorers to their temples so just focusing on getting two of them to their temples before anyone else is a good strategy. I was able to get a third explorer to their temple late for a couple points but that was enough to pull out the victory with 25 points.

Those Barnes and Noble clearance sales had some really great titles, including this one which I snatched up the second I got to one of the tables. I had been to a handful of stores during a trip to NY to see family but was finally able to snag it after going back repeatedly. It won the 2015 Mensa Select award and other titles who've won that have been favorites in our house, so I have high hopes for this one.

03/26/17 - Our friends borrowed this a few months back and we needed something to fill in the gaps between some longer games so I proposed this since they had played it before, allowing us to jump right in. As expected, I like it right away. The games moves incredibly fast with four players and thanks to getting out to an early lead, I was able to pull out a close 2 point victory. I like how simple the game is and I immediately jumped on BGG to add the expansion to my wishlist, something I rarely do. I'm really glad I put in the time to go back and find this one.

The longer this list gets, the more money I realize I spent at Barnes and Noble this year. Got this for less than $10 and it's supposed to be a great game to play with your spouse I hear. The lady and I will have to give this a spin over lunch sometime.

03/22/17 - Christine and I played this before it was time to give the kids baths which was huge because we never game, just the two of us, when the kids are awake. We quickly realized why because the second we set this up, the kids were all over us despite not wanting our attention for a good hour beforehand. ANYWAY...the game is super simple but a lot of strategy comes from such a simple rules set. I got demolished, scoring exactly 0 points in the first game. The second game went my way after I was able to triple down on one color to score 57 points, 73 overall. It's a neat little game that plays quickly and definitely allows you to make meaningful decisions every turn. I think this one is a keeper.

This is a substitution because I gave away my copy of Jarl: The Vikings Tile-Laying Game. I got this for Christmas and have been wanting to play it since I originally saw pictures for it on Twitter. Since it's a two player abstract, I figured it was a good replacement.

9/3/17 - Christine and I played a game of this while the our two younger kids were entertaining themselves and the baby was asleep. The setup and rules are extremely easy but like any good abstract, it definitely makes you think. Only having 5 cards in play that rotate is a really unique mechanic. Christine wished we had more choices but I think the fact that there were two pairs of cards that were very similar. I could play this game over and over and even see it displacing one of the games in my top 10.

This was on sale on Amazon and since I've heard so many good things about it, I had to get a copy. As I've said before, I love card games so I'm always happy to add another great card game to our collection.

01/28/2017 - Got this to the table with our group and I really enjoyed it. I ended up coming in second despite taking quite a few cards because I kept snatching all of one color up to avoid taking their face values. This is a pretty clever design that I can see playing with anyone, gamers and non-gamers alike. This will be one of those games that stays on my shelf for years to come. As a side note, the artwork is quite beautiful.

I wasn't actively looking to get this but it was on my wishlist with a bunch of other Felds when a trade offer came in and I was happy to accept. I know this was reimplemented/rethemed by Jorvik but I'll be more than happy to try this version out.

03/26/17 - I let our friends borrow this game upon request and they were willing to teach it to use despite them not liking it very much. This game is not like the typical Feld games people are used to. There isn't a ton of scoring and there's more "confrontation" than many Feld lovers would prefer. I happened to enjoy it, putting aside the fact that I won, because I like bidding games. What I really liked is that the bidding mechanic was different than ones I've seen before. Placing your workers to increase the bids on cards so you can try and force your opponents to spend more than they'd prefer or even price them out to get something on the cheap is brilliant. Repeated plays of this game would definitely benefit because of the way the cards are set up in a certain order before the game starts. Unfortunately I don't know how often I'll get to play this, if ever, since my group didn't care for it. I still plan on keeping it though.

I got this, the last game on this list, and one other in a trade for Ortus Regni, which I won in last year's Rummage-O-Rama Giveaway. This card game that plays pretty quickly and looks beautiful will likely get played on a lunch date with the lady one of these days.

01/21/17 - Played this over lunch with my wife, she won 55-51. It came down to the last cards in the last round. I got cornered into giving her 5 or 7 points for the win. Drafting is one of our favorite mechanics and this played quickly so it'll see more plays. As we get familiar with the abilities of each card, we'll see how much replayability it has.

The second Kickstarter game on the list and one of the games I'm most excited to play. I LOVE trick taking games so this was a near insta-back from me. I've never played an 18xx game before so I'm hoping this will at least give me a taste of what that's like to see if I want to pursue them.

05/21/17 - After month and a half of busy weekends not gaming really, we finally got a game day in with our friends. I was able to get this to the table despite trick-taking not really being a favorite mechanic among the rest of the group. I made a minor mistake in the rules explanation that I don't recall saying but it didn't impact the game too much. I liked how the trick-taking mechanic works where in alternating rounds, all players are still involved in some way, one by either getting share of a specific line or by adding a piece of track to a line but getting to decide which side of the line to place it. Kelly pulled out a victory despite not really being that interested and the lines just working out in her favor. The general consensus was that it was interesting but it'll need a few more plays to see if it's worth keeping.

I see this get mentioned from time to time being mentioned as a favorite of some of the people I follow on Twitter. I was able to get it for pretty cheap in an auction so why not take the chance? Simultaneous action selection games are really hit or miss with me so let's hope it's the former.

01/01/2017 - Got this to the table with our game group and it didn't disappoint. Of the simultaneous action selection games I've played, I think this might be one of my favorites. The fact that each player plays each hand is a really interesting design feature. This one will stick on the shelves for a long time.

This one checks a lot of boxes for me: card game, drafting, deck building, and an Egyptian theme. I haven't played the original but this one is standalone and I've been told that this one doesn't play as "negatively" towards other players so I think it'll go over better in our group...even though I love take that style games.

10/08/17 - I was starting to set this up to play solo, so I could better explain how to play if I ended up enjoying it, when Christine walked into the dining room and asked if I was going to play this by myself. Not if she was interested enough to sit down! I explained the rules and we made our way through without much of a hiccup. I definitely had the advantage, having played more deck builders and significantly more games of those deck builders than she has. The game does some interesting things but repeat plays will show how good this game really is or not. We both found some combos pretty quickly that worked out well and the lack of take that made for an enjoyable experience for Christine. We both enjoyed it and would like to try it again, if we like it enough to keep it then I'll probably get the first game in the series to combine with this one.
