After we all had so much fun with the 52 Games Challenge 2016 by garbagerunner, here is the new edition for 2017. I loooked through the popsugar reading challenges of 2016 and 2017 and added some ideas of my own and of olafslomp to create new categories for our games.

I order to join the challenge create an entry in the GeekList, where you can track the games played. The Challenge starts on January 1st 2017.

A few clarifications:

1) The list may be completed in any order
2) The same game may not be used to satisfy multiple criteria
3) You do not need to fulfill exactly one category per week. You may play games at whatever pace you want, the goal being to complete the list by December 31, 2017

And here are the categories:

1. a game with an App or another electronic device
2. a game designed by a person of colour
3. a game by multiple designers
4. a political game
5. a game with an animal on the cover
6. a game from a genre you usually do not play
7. a game published 2017
8. a game involving a mythical creature
9. a game involving travel
10. a game with a subtitle

11. a game that always makes you happy
12. a game including food
13. a game set in a steampunk world
14. a game set during wartime
15. a game with a bad rulebook
16. a game where you can play a character with a different ethnicity than yours
17. a game set around a holiday other than christmas
18. a game to take on a trip
19. a language independant game
20. a game from a genre/subgenre you have never heard of

21. a game based on mythology
22. a game from a licensed franchise
23. the first game you see in the game store/game café
24. a game that takes place on an island
25. a game for which at least five expansions have been published, using one of those expansions
26. a game with a pun in the title
27. a game with a snowy theme
28. a game with a theme based on a movie
29. a game with a month in its title
30. a game ranked in the BGG top 50

31. a game that was one of the first 50 added to the BGG database
32. a game that uses at least 10 dice
33. a game that uses an hour glass
34. a game with seven or more words in its title
35. a game by a designer who only published one game
36. a game that features a map of the world (earth) on its board
37. a print and play game
38. a game you got as a gift
39. a game you bought yourself
40. a game owned by someone else

41. a game that has won the Golden Geek award for best board game of the year
42. a game with a beautiful board
43. a game with at least 100 different cards in it
44. a game you have owned longer than 2016, but didn’t play in 2016
45. a game depicting itself or another game in the game
46. a mass market game
47. a game with a character, that has your occupation
48. a game with the main colour blue on its box
49. a game with a year number in its title
50. a game based on a graphic novel/comic

51. a coop game you have played but not beat before (alt.: beat your old high score)
52. a game including a river.

*The goal of the challenge is to provide a fun way to get people to play a wide variety of games, some of which may be outside their typical 'gaming comfort zone'. Feel free to modify the categories/bend the rules as necessary but don't immediately give up on the more 'difficult' categories. There are TONS of games out there--you might be surprised at what you can find!

I dabbled with this challenge last year but didn't really commit, so I'm hoping I will SURVIVE it this year.

There are several categories that will definitely be a stretch - I'm hoping that I'll get inspiration from what other folks play!
