Welcome to the
Solitaire Games On Your Table Geeklist
For January 2017

Happy New Year! May your 2017 be filled with good tidings and cheer!

How The SGoYT Geeklist Works:

1 Play a game solo, any game in any manner of your choosing.

2 Post a geeklist item to this geeklist for the game that you played, and include any and all information about your play and the game that you played that you think might be interesting to your fellow solo gamers.

3 Read all about the solo gaming exploits of your fellow solo gamers here on the geek.

4 Participate in any contests, giveaways, or challenges that may be included in the geeklist.

5 Try not to spend too much money on new games that you read about on this geeklist.

6 Have fun and enjoy the comraderie of the wonderful online community that is the 1 Player Guild on BGG!

January 2017: Games, Puzzles, Contests, and Giveaways!

I have been a fan of puzzles and word games all of my life. So, now that I have been given the keys to this geeklist, I thought I would use this as an opportunity to create some fun puzzle contests for the SGoYT community. I plan on having at least four (and hopefully more) solo-gaming associated puzzle contests through out the month. I will provide a link to all of the new contests in the first geeklist item of the geeklist. Participation is encouraged—as there will be prizes for all of the contests—but not required. Let’s get the new year off to a great start!

Solo gaming has been thin on the ground until recently but I broke the drought with working some more on my solo variant for this.

I'd forgotten how fun this game was and I'm enjoying tidying up the variant.

I'm biased of course as it's an historical era I'm interested in, I'm also a sucker for the wonderful art.

The end is near

Students took MAPS tests today... I played at least 12 games while running the "confirm" game to keep their tests going. I was rolling poorly and had only one game that had all the rails make it to the mine (sorry I don't remember the score). After testing 10 students gave the game a try for about an hour. Quite fun.

I really love how much enjoyment I get out of this game that just needs one sheet of paper and a pair of dice.

Ok, so I didn't do as good as last game (when I scored 51), but not as bad as my first game either (when I scored 22).

I don't know, I thought I had put the stations in a good place when I drew up the board, but looking back, I should have known that wall of mountains with a Mine stuck up on top was going to be big trouble.

You only get two chances to modify dice rolls in the game, so you COULD say this game is very luck dependent on what dice you roll. But you have so much freedom to chart your own course as well (where you place the Mine and the Bonus Square and your stations and how you fill in your rail lines), that I feel it's got one of the better balances of dice and luck you will find in a game.

Today I finally tried my dry-wipe copy of 30 rails that I made in October...

Two games, the 1st being an appalling 28 pts partly as I forgot about being able to change each die once and so I only had 2 stations connected to each other, but managed to connect every station to the mine. Only when scoring up at the end did I realise that connecting to the mine isn't as profitable as connecting stations together and the bonus tile doesn't count for station to mine connections.

My second game I did a bit better, scoring 47 - in almost the reverse of my 1st game I connected most stations but only had one connected to the mine and no connected tracks used the bonus tile.

Good fun, but I should maybe make an A4 dry wipe copy rather than my portable A5.

After multiplayer wheeling and dealing it's time for some tense tactical action.
Replaying 'Retaking Vierville' again. I hope to play through all the starter kit scenarios and then move on to full blown ASL. I have a stack of scenarios that would run into the 100s. Should keep me busy for a while at least ...

Was enjoying the Introductory aspect of the game. Thought I had it in the bag until the nemesis drew some nasty minions and unleashes. I could of survived if my water line from my washer didn't burst. My apartment was completely flooded. It sprayed all over the place and soaked some of games. The people around maintenance didn't get here till 45 minutes later. This was around midnight when it happened. Lost Friday as I don't think it could be salvaged. Other boxes are warped a bit but most of it is OK. Not sure what I can back from the insurance company. Many of clothes and suits got soaked. Sigh... happy new year. It's 5 am now. They are vacuuming a lot if water out putting blowers around the entire place. No sleep tonight. Had to give myself a break. Take care all.

I picked this game up towards the end of last year. I'm into deckbuilders right now and the theme looked cool so I thought I would check it out.
Right off the bat, one thing that impressed me is that they packaged the cards in pre-sorted decks so that you could jump into the game as fast as possible.

Contrasted with other games like Legendary Encounters, where you have to spend at least an hour sorting cards before you can play, I thought this was a great system for getting started.
As for the game itself, I definitely enjoyed it although I thought it was a little uninspired. There are some really interesting mechanics, such as the lack of shuffling or having to pre-plan your spells to cast in future turns. There's also a lot going on, with managing your breaches (to power your spells), purchasing new cards from the offer and charging your character's special abilities.

I also thought that it was interesting that your character's can't actually die and the real target is the city that you're protecting. If your heroes loses all of their hit points, they just become weaker and your city becomes more vulnerable.

I played the game twice using the suggested starting decks and I won both games by a fairly healthy margin, which is concerning. I didn't feel that my city was especially threatened in either game. There are some nasty cards in the nemesis deck but I was able to counter them without sacrificing too much.

The theme of giant monsters threatening a subterranean city is very cool but the artwork is fairly generic. Lots of spiky monsters and wizards in robes and tunics. I wish they would have gone with a more unique aesthetic for the game rather than standard D&D fare.
***
My immediate impression is kind of "meh." Still, I had fun and I definitely feel the urge to play the game more. There's a lot left to explore in the game with two more nemeses, 6 more mages and a whole deck of cards for the hero offer that I haven't even cracked yet. I don't regret getting it but I don't think it will usurp the other deckbuilders in my rotation (Shadowrun, LOTR and Legendary Encounters: Alien)

Just had a pretty close game against Rageborne with 2 mages. 1 was exhausted and still able to participate enough to bring him down to zero health with Gravehold was at 3.

This is a fun deckbuilder that has great replayability. The art isn't amazing but the game is solid.

Another KS purchase.

Played against the Rageborne.

Lost really badly (this seems to be a habit with my solo gaming - still I have fun). I think what got me was the draw of minions. I'd managed to hit Rageborne for about 10 but the town kept getting hits. Before I knew what was happening I was defeated.

I definately need to learn to get rid of basic cards as I kept drawing weak cards. Enjoyed it though.

Had a tense game today against rageborne with two mages. There was a moment where each Nemesis turn he drew 3 consecutive minions. 1 with 11hps, 9, then 5. I'm not sure how I survived without those minions hurting us or Gravehold too much.

Drew a minion in the latter part of the game that had 16 health while Rageborne was at 9 hit points and Gravehold was at 3 health. It was down to 3 turn order cards. 2 of them where for each of the mages and one for the nemesis. The minion's persistent ability was that Rageborne unleashes twice. He had 3 furies and would strike on the next nemesis turn. I was lucky and drew a mage turn. Had a shard that would allow the other mage to use a prepped spell. It did 4 damage and then the mage whittled Rageborne down to 2 hp. Then the moment of truth. 50/50 chance. would it be the mage or the nemesis. I won.

Another PnP game and a really good one it is!

A spy game deckbuilder that reminds me a bit of Thunderstone Advance (with the advancing line of enemies), but has a very cool Mission Structure that means you have to adjust your deckbuilding strategy and your deck on the fly. It also cleverly uses the enemies (called Obstacles) in a dual fashion. You need to acquire some of them to make your deck better to achieve Mission Goals, but you also have to just Knock some out in place to keep the alarm level from rising too high.

The deck has a five Mission structure. You have to beat all five Missions to win the game. Each time you beat a Mission, you get a reward (an item or a new rule to make the game easier) but you also add more difficult Obstacles to the Obstacles deck.

I printed out the low-ink version. I actually think the low-ink version looks pretty cool on its own merits and certainly saves my black ink cartridge. Here is the game set up for Mission One with my first hand displayed.

For Mission One, I need six Hide value on one turn and my initial deck has only 3 Hide and 5 Punch, so I need to defeat some Obstacles and add them to my deck to be able to get that 6 Hide value. All while keeping the Alarm value from getting to 50.

It's all very thematic as well. You sneak around to find a Map to the complex (Mission One rewards you with the Map - permanent 1 Hide value every turn) then for your next Mission, equipped with the Map, you need to find a Guard Uniform (an Item added for Mission Two) and you need 6 Punch now to knock out a guard to complete Mission Two.

So your deckbuilding you did for Mission One doesn't help you for Mission Two. But there are cards that allow you to fine tune your deck and Punch Obstacles you can add as well.

Here is the set up for Mission Two:

You see I now not only have the Map, but I have also picked up some Chloroform that will allow me to Knock Out or Disarm (take into my deck) any one person obstacle.

I passed Mission One with only 36 Alarm value, but lost Mission Two when I hit 50 on the Alarm scale and I could not tune my deck fast enough to get the six Punch I needed in one hand.

I am ready to go back and try again very soon. I love this game so far. All the cards have very cool thematic abilities (the Guard Dog will advance in the Line to be next to people etc).

I have read that there are optimal strategies that make this game very easy and beatable every time, but for a free game, if I get 7 or 8 plays out of it (or more) to find that optimal strategy, it will be worth the ink and cardstock.

Very impressed with this cool game.

Dave

Finally gave this a try after putting it together last month.
I really like this solo Deck Building game even though my first two games I lost horribly. My spy was apparently last in his class at spy school.

Did a PnP last weekend and gave it a go today since I'm stuck at home in an ice storm.

After a few trial runs with Mission 1 I gave it a full play (and forgot to take pictures).
Mission 1 Alarm level 34
Mission 2 Alarm level 44
Mission 3 Alarm level 45
Mission 4 Utter faillure

I think I'll be giving it another play after dinner tonight.

Game 2
Failure on mission 1

Game 3
Failure on mission 1 (apparently trying to sneak in chain mail)

Game 4
Mission 1 Alarm level 27
Mission 2 Alarm level 49 (close call)
Mission 3 Failure (couldn't collect 7 cards due to poor choices in Mission 1)

Just into Mission 2:

I'll admit it. I don't feel much like submitting a game session report. I received news that a good friend from high school passed away suddenly and unexpectedly yesterday.

I had played this game early afternoon yesterday (before hearing the news). It was a fun game that reminded me why I enjoy this title.

This was a regular solo game but I did play using the travel die. The story telling aspect of this game works well. The encounters book is a great feature and the theme is fun and different.

Agents of Smersh is a nice story telling game.
It adds a clever theme to good mechanics.

Fun quick deck Builder that will also play well with up to 4 people.

While looking in he back of the rules there is a section for a Cooperative game called "Time's Running Out" which lends itself to also play with only 1 player.

Cards that would effect others only give gold now and while every turn in the main variant will lose one card to keep up with this in a one player game you lose 2 cards from the main deck every turn instead.

Plays well this way and I also changed it so that all cards go to destroyed pile only instead of displaced to make it harder.

My first playthrough like this ended with me able to purchase the last Elite with only 3 cards left in the main deck.

This is one that I will definitely play again and as it had a small footprint I can play it while waiting between calls at work.

Played the solo campaign on my iPad as I was trying to drift off to sleep. I was on the second year and needed a 55. Well I got a 43 because I had to take a 15 point penalty for 5 beggar cards one year as I made a major tactical error and miscalculation. My only complaint of the iOs port of this game is I just can't see the entire layout as I play. Having the entire board in front of you just makes it easier to see the big picture which in this brutally tough Euro is pretty key. I love the iOs port just for it's simplicity and making setup a non issue. It has the solo rules and campaign built in so it is a true port of the solo experience. It has it's plusses and minuses though. Scrolling to see everything and flipping pages is the big minus. Having zero setup and the solo campaign is the big plus.

iOs version is a truly excellent port that has the solo campaign integrated but if used to the physical game- seeing everything takes lots of scrolling and flipping pages.

Over the course of last week and the weekend, I managed to get Agricola back onto the table. I played 5 Family games, 1 E Deck game, and 2 I Deck games. I forgot how damaging it could be if you don't get your food engine going quickly.

This is the beginning of my attempt to play all of my Uwe Rosenberg games this year in Honor of the 10 Year Aniversary of Agricola.

Very slowly getting through the solitaire campaign. I agonize over my moves in most solo games, and Agricola is worse for it because of the devastating penalty for errors. For game 4 I started with Wood Cutter (extra wood when taking wood), Carpenter (cheaper rooms), and Tutor (points for occupations), as well as 8 food.

My hand had a lot of clay power with Clay Hut Builder, Geologist, and Loam Pit. In stage 1 I put that stuff down, as well as Seasonal Worker to get some free seeds. Turn 4 I picked up the 12 Wood, so as to be able to build rooms if stage order cooperated.

At this point in the write-up I realise that I have horribly cheated due to the 3 Wood accumulator actually being 2 Wood for solo, which is not marked on the board . I had enough spare food/animals and a couple turns not taking useful actions, that I think I could have compensated with the only difference being the Joinery bonus points, but wow I really wish that would be marked.

Wish for children didn't come until Round 7, but at least stone was Round 5. I used Day Laborer to get a Vegetable here, and built two cheap rooms along with two stables (Mining Hammer would provide two more later), and renovated to clay.

Stage 3 I picked up the next kid along with a loom for some food, with animal Tamer + stables letting us keep a few sheep around. Possibly Fishing was taken here.

Stage 4 once 6 Reeds built up, took those and build two clay rooms (the other 2 Reeds needed for eventual renovation + acorn basket). Added the last child. Going to 6 rooms was good because with the Animal Tamer, it's possible to fit a maximum scoring animal set in only 4 tiles of pasture. Maybe Clay oven was here?

Stage 5 was filling out the farm. Finally at this point I took around 12 clay, building more cookeries. Also built the Drinking Trough to make it possible to fit more sheep for the loam, and easily breed animals before getting the last stable. Sow/bake to support the food a bit, and had to take 2 Cattle for breeding.

The 5 actions for Stage 6 / Round 14 were well-planned in advance: take 6 Stone, renovate + CCC fireplace, cattles, cultivate, build joinery. Eat some spare animals, sell a clay, etc.

Final score 87 with target 62, but removing 2 for the Joinery bonus and taking a beggar for some fudge, so let's call it 82. Next game will start with 10 food and I chose to bring along the Seasonal Worker, hopefully less cheating will be involved.

Cards in upper right were brought into the game, the upside-down ones on the right were not played, the rest should be in play order but some may have shifted for the photo.

I'm familiarising myself with this newcomer in my collection, it's a PnP from Hollandspiele that can be ordered from wargamevault. I'd rate the pnp difficulty as very easy!

Going through the rules, I'd say this is a quite sophisticated solo wargame. I'm not a wargamer as such so I can't compare it to other games, but apart from a few questions that I either figured out myself or found answered on BGG it wasn't very hard to get the flow of the game.

The rules are written with great care. The strategy is for us to figure out - but here is an article to get you started:
https://hollandspiele.com/blogs/hollandazed-thoughts-ideas-a...

The game after setup. The system with the cups is really nice - depending on the actions you take and other events in the game, tribes and tribal leaders are randomly moved from one cup to another, changing their allegiance and making sure they will end up in your lap soon! The game flows quite well, and the battle procedure is understandable. Now, to win on the other hand...

1 Player podcast did a review of it here:
1P 114 - Wargames

and here it Low Player Count with an interview of the designer Tom Russel:
Travis Gets Heavy - Capstone Games & Hollandspiele Interviews

Hollandspiele has also released the very interesting An Infamous Traffic by Cole Wehrle that can be ordered as a PnP, but that one is not for solitaire play.

This is a nice solo wargame that is cheap to buy and easy to PnP, and you support a small publisher in the process - win win!

After a few resounding losses I never thought I would win this game, but this time it would be different!

To win this excellent solo wargame about Agricola's conquest of Britain, you need to win a nasty battle called Mons Graupius, and have a steadily increasing set of victory points after each game round.

Before this game I have lost every time because of the VP requirement and haven't even been close to fighting the battle of Mons Graupius. But this time I took it slow, building up settlements, and in fact passing quite a few rounds (passing means no battles or harassment of any kind, so you get a victory point and a beneficial restocking of the tribal cups). This seems to have been the winning strategy, I ended up with 82 point, seven more than what is required

This is how the Battle of Graupius looks like. Firstly, you need to engage the caledonian tribal leader in battle (upper left), which is a bit difficult since you don't know where and when he will turn up. In this game he was a far up north as you can go - difficult to transport two legions up there.

Secondly, you need to win the actual battle (deployment in upper right) which was twice as hard as the hardest normal battle you fight, so you better arm up! I got lucky with the dice rolling, and I have figured out some of the tactics of battle now. The trick is to put less experienced forces next to experienced ones so that they get support and encouragement!

A really nice solo wargame for a great price!

Also played this one last night. I seem to do the same strategy each time. I scored a 27 which is consistent with my 26 and 26 from the last two plays. I've read that it's possible to get upwards to 60 points with this variant!

End game state:

Have a few spare minutes so it was time to bring this back on the table for the 1st time in a few months. The rust showed. In the 1st 2 rounds I took 2 Objectives, but used my replacement troopers to do so, and also had 3 troopers get killed.

So, with no new troopers and 3 dead ones, I got into a death spiral. I eked it out for about 6 more rounds, but way before I got halfway through the Mission Deck I had to take all of the Disorganized cards-- I can't even remember the last time that happened.

Moral of the story-- replacements are far more important than Objectives in the early going. Plenty of time to score points later.

Played this little gem. Realized I had missed one of the winning conditions, namely going through the allied deck. That makes a difference. I've probably won more games than I thought in the past.

I like this deck building game. Like many deck builders you sometimes have to throw away a card. Somehow it's a little more difficult to sacrifice Pvt R Fermier than a random blob ship.

I also like that it plays quickly and doesn't take up too much table space. It's a perfect game for those ssmall time to fit in a game.

I played three times and won twice.
