Every so often, I do one of these lists, and it tends to draw a lot of attention. That, or somebody else does one. I find they are great eye candy, and an excellent way to share the news about unusual or fairly uncommon games. Sometimes, they even help shake loose a few games that might otherwise not be traded.

Here are a few of the games on my wish list, many of them having been so since the last time I did a list like this, and perhaps before that. As before, I'm trying to limit myself so that I don't bore you all to tears. Will likely add other games as I remember them or discover them.

Admission up front: I love a game with well crafted components. Aesthetically pleasing games really give me a warm and pleasant feeling. That said, some of the games on this list are completely about content. Not much else going on for them.

Wanna add your own? That'd be great. Tell me about that gem or twelve you're aching to get your hands on!

Format is Alphabetical, since people ask for that every time anyway.

Wooden semi-abstract about the Battle of Actium, a subject near and dear to my classicist heart. (No, I don't agree with the theory that the battle didn't happen. Your mileage may vary.)

While the designer's other games come up once in a great while, I've never seen one come up, aside from a drop into a "rare and collectible games" math trade. Wish there were more of such things, but I can understand that people are nervous about trading such things.

This one isn't so much availability as... well, logistics might be an appropriate name on multiple levels.

I like harsh economic games. Most are not harsh enough. Antiquity is close, but there's something still "stable" about it. Or there's Indonesia, where you can't even go bankrupt.

But then there's this game. One I've never played, but apparently is so harsh no one has ever said they've won by the actual conditions. Where one's economy is unstable by itself, let alone with regard to other players. And where building an army has a cost in risking one's own survival just for constructing units. But if someone starts building an army, wouldn't you have to, too...?

The problem is, I don't have anyone else who'd be interested in this, and I'd have a hard time justifying the price for a game I can only play solo, when I've also heard it's just too much solo. It might not, with some kinds of minor computer assistants (which I have the skill to make), but there's always the risk.

And so it doesn't happen. I've even thought of/tried making my own similar (computer) game, with even more insane logistical detail, but that's even more expensive in time.

A unique game from the early Mid-Century period in game design. Essentially a travel game that uses a board that moves, sort of gimmicky, but inspires some warm memories from former owners, and is apparently not the world's worst game.

A very neat concept, done in both terrestrial and space based versions.

Semi-Abstract about lining animals up at watering holes for the perfect shot. I have seen two copies (both of the wood edition) come up for sale. I was ready to pull the trigger on one, but was talked out of it, by someone whom I suspect ended up buying it (yeah, yeah, I know... I was naive).

Became somewhat famous on the Internet after a commercial for the game went viral decades after being produced. Yes, it's real, but it's extremely rare, and I've only ever seen a copy offered once, and that one with missing pieces. I've scoured markets, thrift stores, auctions...nothing. I suspect a relatively low production run combined with the rather violent mechanics of the game may have done most copies in!

Edit:

There's a copy listed on BGG that has since been edited to say it has a slightly chipped ball, but it's otherwise complete. High price, but tempting.

An intriguing, very beautiful abstract game by a producer known for a variety of lovely, wooden games. The "Black Elephant" version is quite a bit rarer than "White Elephant," but recently a few copies have come onto the market. Unfortunately, my funds are low. Perhaps I'll get lucky and one or two will still be on the market when I have the quid again.

My favorite movie of all time had an unofficial, highly unauthorized board game.

Reviews are mixed to be charitable. Mostly it's just something people have because they are fans and collectors of rarities; that said, at least some say there is a game here. Who knows?

Copies pop up every great once and a while.

Bet you haven't seen this one. A few have, but it's not very well known.

This is a dexterity game, featuring a little China shop in miniature. Players control the proverbial bull, a top, trying to score points, if I understand it, by doing as much damage as possible.

Said to be quite amusing, and very nice to look at (which is something I have an admitted weakness for.)

So, why so hard to find? Well, aside from a somewhat low print run, it's often confused with not one, but two, other games with the same name. Even so confusing, in fact, that sellers and ebay alike often list this as being the same, when it turns out they have a copy of the other game, which is nothing at all like this one....

Still uber rare. Still impossible to get. Still not going to be reprinted, and still being sold at hugely inflated prices. Some of us were tracking prices a few years back, and at one point they had topped $800. I put a large bid on a copy a couple of years ago with five minutes left to go. Price had trebled from my offer by the end of the auction.

Unfortunately, the odds of making a fan copy are low, because the owners don't want to share the rules manual, citing various reasons from ethical and reasonable to simple greed ("You won't buy it if I share the rules!") Full disclosure: if the game is as good as I hear it is, and if the stories I hear about it are true, this game designer would borrow the -hell- out of elements he likes. (Ethically of course.)

So, the main attraction for me here is the art and subject matter. Chiromagica is a Victorian "fortune telling" game. Essentially, it consists of a large, glass plate covering a magnetic spinner, which reacts in different ways depending upon the question asked of the "seer", questions being in the form of paper inserts.

These do come up for auction from time to time, but I've never seen one in the flesh. Cruelly, there's a maker of miniature board games for dollhouses who makes this game in 1/25th scale, and that occasionally pops up on Etsy and Ebay, causing brief heart flutters at the chance of acquisition.

I'd truly love to have Chiromagica in my collection, both as a gamer and an Historian. Maybe one day I'll get lucky.

This one really intrigues me and would love to track down a complete good condition copy. The idea seems fabulous though I'm not sure if my group would ever play it. Sounds like it takes many hours to play.

There was a little discussion about a reprint awhile back but I guess that would be unlikely. If they ever released scans of the game it might be fun to do a full graphic redesign of it.

Ordinary chess... I'm sorry to say it, bores me to tears after years of playing. Courier Chess... really intrigues me. A very old variant, dating to the early thirteen century. Sets do pop up once in a great while, but they aren't cheap, and to have a proper chess game, I want a proper chess set - in this case, a courier chess set.

Still, I was able to get a copy of Shatar, so this is theoretically possible.

An interesting WW1 based semi-abstract published by Nestorgames. Too expensive when it was initially available, I decided I would pay the price a few weeks ago, only to discover that it's out of print, with no info on when it'll be available again. I could possibly make my own copy, I suppose, if I could snag the rules and felt brave. My hand made maps for Dune and A Game of Thrones have been big hits.

This has, for many years, been at the top of my want list. It was the last game, so far as I know, produced by Theta, a German company that produced beautifully crafted games in unusual forms. Some were good, some where bad. Very mixed views of Horus, but my main attraction to the game are its theme (bidding on items to place in an early Pharaoh's burial), and the sheer beauty of the game and its components. As a bonus, some owners of the game have actually told me it's a better game than others might feel.

Perhaps 25 were made... I'm told the actual number may be lower.

I have never seen a copy of Horus for sale or for trade. I've been contacted regarding it three times: in each time, the individual offering the trade has subsequently disappeared without corresponding, even when given personal contact info, so I'm fairly convinced that Boudicca (the wife) and I are being trolled. Apparently the primary issue with trading Horus is that it's rather large, and rather heavy; also, those who have it truly love it and generally don't want to see it go.

Needless to say, I'd happily consider realistic offers from people who -actually- want to trade or sell the thing.

Cool game though!!

a children's game from Germany. Why am I interested? each player is trying to become the Devil's top chef (and you thought Gordon Ramsey was tough!), you can sabotage other player's meals by including milk (Since milk is anathema to Satan?) and it has a cauldron from which Satan may pop out! A pretty safe bet this will never be released in the United States. It sounds like something I have to bring to one of the game nights we have Thursdays in a local bar.
