VOTING IS OPEN!
http://georgejaros.com/PnPGDA

THE inaugural
PNP GAME DESIGN AWARDS
2016

::: THE PNP GAME DESIGN AWARDS 2016 MAIN CONTEST THREAD:::

GOAL

The goal of the awards is to encourage the ongoing development of quality PnP games, to promote those games to new audiences, and to recognize excellence in PnP game design.

SCHEDULE

SUBMISSION: Submission starts and ends in January starts on January 1, 2017 and ends on February 15, 2017.
VOTING: Voting starts and ends in February starts on February 16, 2017 and ends on March 31, 2017.
AWARDS: Winners and finalists are announced in April.

ELIGIBILITY

The games eligible to be entered must be:
1. Freely available PnP games. *
2. Have had active development during 2016.
3. Currently have a WIP thread. **

Although there is no limit to the number of entries a designer can enter, you must enter your games if and when you think they are ready, as you will not be able to make any changes for the duration of the contest.

* Games entered into this and other board game design contest, or made publicly available prior to this contest are eligible. Games can and should be improved upon from the time they were entered into a prior contest. Indecent, inappropriate, unauthorized, or illegal games are not eligible.

** The WIP thread must be on BGG either documenting the game design, improvements, files, etc, or simply pointing towards a similar WIP thread outside of BBG.

LISTING

SCHEDULE: Submission starts and ends in January, 2017.

PROCESS: Designers will list their own games on the official webpage here:
E http://georgejaros.com/PNPGDA/
Or the official GeekList here:
E ::: THE PNP GAME DESIGN AWARDS 2016 ::: - Entries GeekList
Or in both places! (Moderators will keep both locations synced, entering in both locations will help us ensure your game data is accurate.)[/size]

VOTING

SCHEDULE: Voting starts and ends in February.

PROCESS: Voting will be done by rating games on a five point scale with 1 being the lowest and 5 being the highest ratings. Games can be rated in five different categories: Overall Rating, Innovation, Thematic Immersion, Art & Design, and Rules. Additionally, each voter will be allowed to enter the BGG Usernames of helpful playtesters. None of the ratings will be required, and games can be rated at different times (i.e. a voter can rate some games, leave the site, and return to rate other games later).

All Level 1 or higher BGG members who registered the year prior to the contest (2016) or before may vote. Voters will be required to submit their BGG user name.

AWARDS

SCHEDULE: Winners and runners up are announced in March.

PROCESS: Voting will use a proprietary rating system formula similar to what was used for the 2 Player PnP Design Contest on BGG in 2016. The ranking formula takes the Wilson Score (a binomial proportion confidence interval) of all a game's ratings and adjusts it with bonuses, penalties, and other adjustments based on things like number of ratings, standard deviation, difference between max and min ratings, etc. The formula used to calculate the base rating (before adjustments) is based on the one described here.

BEST OVERALL GAME AWARD

1. Best Overall Game

BEST IN CATEGORY AWARDS

2. Best New Game *
3. Most Innovative **
4. Most Immersive
5. Best Art & Design
6. Best Written Rules
7. Best Playtester
8. Best Beyond PnP ***

* In 2016 Best New Game will be for games that were initially made available in 2016. While the contest is open to older games that have had development in 2016, they will not be considered for this category.

** Innovation is subjective and can encompass mechanics, theme, design, or any other characteristic of the game.

*** Beyond PnP is for formally published, self published, digitally published, crowdfunded/ing, for profit entries and will not be eligible for the Best Overall Game award.

PRIZES

Geek Gold donated to the main contest thread or GeekList will be divided equally amongst the categories, with the Best Overall Game counting as two categories. Any Geek Gold donated to each category's individual post will be added to that category's total Geek Gold. Geek Gold will then be distributed to each category's winners and finalists in a 60/10/10/10/10 ratio. Ties in a category will have that award divided evenly amongst the winners, any remainder will be applied to the winner of that category, and any remainder from ties in that category will go to the overall winner.

We are looking for additional sponsorships of prizes. If you would like to donate a prize for this contest, or have ideas for prizes beyond Geek Gold, please Contact Us. Ideas may include media coverage (reviews, podcasts, interviews, etc.), publisher feedback, gift certificates, games, equipment, etc.

Any prizes to be awarded will be updated here:

200 Total Geek Gold to be distributed amongst the winners. From:
- - George Jaros - 200 GG
GJJ Games will do a Full Review of the winner of the Best Overall Game for the 2016 awards, as well as a spotlight post highlighting the other winners and runners up.

8 Seconds
By: George Jaros
A Buckin' Press-Your-Luck Rodeo Game

Players: 1 to 8 Time: 10 to 30 minutes Ages: 5+
Description: 8 Seconds is a press-your-luck dice and card game for 1-8 players about the action and excitement of bull riding in a rodeo. Roll your dice and match your moves to the moves of the Bulls. But beware the rodeo clowns! There are only two on staff, so if you roll a third Rodeo Clown you’ll have to fill in and you won’t score your Bull!

Components consist of 8 dice, a deck of 28 Bull cards, 30 Foul Tokens, and 8 reference cards.

Dice can have one of five different values on each face: Turn, Buck, Kick, Blank, or Rodeo Clown. Rodeo Clowns are kept, Blanks are rerolled, and everything else can either be kept or rerolled.

There is also a deck of 28 Bull cards. Each Bull requires 3-7 dice to be placed on it. Players must match their dice rolls to the moves indicated on the cards (turns, kicks, and bucks) in order to successfully ride the Bull. At the start of a player's turn they draw three Bull cards and then roll the dice. They can reroll dice as needed, according to the rules, until they either get Bucked Off (have three Rodeo Clowns, or too many Rodeo Clowns to successfully ride a Bull), choose to Dismount, or successfully Ride a Bull. After each roll, including the initial roll, the player must discard one of the their Bull cards before they can reroll. If they successfully ride a Bull before getting Bucked Off they'll get to collect that Bull card and earn the points indicated.

Throughout the game players can also earn Foul Tokens that let them reroll Rodeo Clown dice, gain extra Bulls to attempt, reroll without discarding a Bull, or earn extra points at the end of the game.

The game goes until one player has successfully ridden three Bulls, and then everyone else gets a final turn. The winner is the player with the most points in Bulls and Foul Tokens.

The Riders - Mini Expansion - The Riders is a mini expansion for 8 Seconds that adds a bit of variety by giving each player special abilities. At the beginning of the game each player will get to take on the role of a character. Throughout the game players can use their characters' special abilities to affect their turns and drive their strategies. The Riders includes 20 different characters.

Golden Buckle - Mini Expansion - The Golden Buckle mini expansion adds several Golden Buckle cards that require all eight dice to earn. At the beginning of each game four Golden Buckles are laid out. If any player successfully completes a Golden Buckle they may acquire it, and still Ride a Bull. Golden Buckles provide various rewards, from extra points to special Foul Token bonuses and do not count toward the three Bull end of game trigger.

Vegas Showdown - Full Expansion - Vegas Showdown adds betting to 8 Seconds! Now, when you're not trying to ride a bull, you can place bets on the outcome of your opponents! Each player's turn also includes two rounds of betting that don't slow the pace of the game at all. After the rider reveals the three bulls each other player can place a single $2 bet by playing a card face-down. Once the dice are rolled the gamblers can place a second $2 bet, either on a separate outcome or doubling down on their original bet. When the rider finishes the ride payouts are collected from the bank, lost bets are returned to the bank, and the rider has a chance to make a few bucks, too! This is by far the biggest change to the game in months and it's turned 8 Seconds into an incredibly great time! Give it a try now! Vegas Showdown adds five cards per player (including a reference card), three variant cards, and a set of poker chips.

CivMint
By: George Jaros
A game of Develop-mint, Advance-mint, Move-mint, Arma-mint, Govern-mint, and lots of Enjoy-mint and Excite-mint!

Players: 2 Time: 60 minutes Ages: 10+
Description: CivMint is a micro civilization building game with a branching tech tree that fits in a mint tin. The game is a combination of area control, resource management, and civilization development. There are four development tracks: Religion, Government, Culture, and Technology. There are five resources to manage: Wood, Stone, Metal, Food, and Money, as well as Combat Power that is used to give you an edge in battle. Each civilization has four aspects to manage: Military Might, Civilian Happiness, Economic Growth, and Population Size. There are also seven types of units that players can build and use for various purposes, represented by D6 dice: Settlers, Villages, Cities, Infantry, Cavalry, Artillery, and Ships (identified the same as settlers, but on water spaces).

As a player researches different developments their civilizations will get different benefits. Depending on how a player chooses to develop their civilization they can focus on military, knowledge, or economic strategies.

CivMint has a simple, straightforward tech tree to provide a relatively simple gameplay, yet offers a depth of strategy and multiple paths to victory. Each of the four tracks (religion, political, culture, and technology) has only two branches. The two branches of each track will have strategically opposite goals, e.g. Religion has endings in either Atheism or Monotheism, Political ends in either Communism or Democracy, Culture ends in either Education or Economics, and Technology ends in either Gunpowder or Scientific Reasoning. Each development has thematic benefits and penalties throughout the rest of the game.

Units can be built and upgraded using resources that are gathered from the spaces on the maps. Points will be awarded based on combinations of developments researched, areas controlled, and resources obtained. There will be several end-game triggers, including reaching a certain number of advancements, conquering an opponent's capital city, or building a powerful economy.

Dungeon Hack: The Dice Game
By: Joseph Propati
Dungeon Hack is a Solo Dice chucking, Dungeon crawling, Dice Placement, character advancing, card game.

Players: 1 Time: 45 to 90 minutes Ages: 12+
Description: Dungeon Hack – The Dice Game: is a Solo Dice chucking, Dungeon crawling, Dice Placement, character advancing, card game. You’ll take [4] first-time adventurers’ [Fighter, Cleric, Thief, and Wizard] through a randomly generated dungeon with Rooms, Junction Rooms, Corridor Rooms and Corridors. You’ll have to organize your party with two characters in front and two in back just how you would normally travel in a 10’ wide dungeon corridor. The [4] “Multi-level” Character cards allow YOU to decide your party’s order. This creates Front Line attackers/defenders as well as second line defenders. Your characters will advance to the next level once they’ve accumulated enough experience killing monsters.
You’ll explore dungeon corridors and rooms, fight monsters, try to avoid and disarm traps, discover gold and magical items, and complete quests. Each turn you will roll the dice, evaluate your choices and perform your actions; destroying monsters, resolving traps and traveling deeper and deeper into the depths of the dungeon till you finally reach the ultimate goal – The Giant Red Dragon.
If you can stay alive and escape the dungeon with at least three of your party members, you earn the right to live as heroes; enjoying the spoils of victory.
Lose two or more of your party and you lose the game; becoming the next tragic story told at the local inn of a group of intrepid heroes seeking adventure and glory who never returned from the Red Dragon dungeon.

Les Petits Pirates
By: George Jaros
A Game of Piracy, Plunder, and Buried Treasure

Players: 1 to 4 Time: 30 to 60 minutes Ages: 8+
Description: Ahoy matey! The pirate life may seem glorious, but it’s actually quite hard work. You know, only about 1% of us pirates are successful enough to make a name for ourselves. We can’t all be Blackbeards and Sparrows. But even for a lowly working class pirate there comes a time when retirement looms on the horizon. A smart pirate knows when it’s time to save toward retirement. It’s important to bury a bit of treasure to ensure you have something to look forward to. There’s no sense in spending everything on rum and gunpowder today if it means you can’t enjoy a decadent pirate retirement someday!

Mint Works
By: Justin Blaske
Minty Fresh Worker Placement

Players: 2 to 4 Time: 15 minutes Ages: 8+
Description: Mint Works is a light and straight forward worker placement game. Its compact size makes it easy to put in your pocket and take it anywhere. Its simple rules make it easy to introduce new players to the genre of worker placement.

During the game each player will have a limited amount of Mint Tokens, which represent their workers.

Players will use these mint tokens to earn more tokens, take first player or buy and build plans.

Plans are how players earn points. Some plans will only give points, others will give extra powers to the owner.

Once any player has at least 7 points earned (or if there are not enough plans to refill the stock) the end of the game is triggered. The game will then be over at the end of the current round.

Whoever has the most points provided by plans they have built wins!

Paper 'Mech
By: Chris Alton
One page, one player, one mech. One tough challenge.

Players: 1 Time: 30 to 45 minutes Ages: 10+
Description: The time is now. Our enemy have been attacking us for weeks and we cannot hold out much longer. Our scouts report that a large force is en route to our location. We would have liked for you to have more time to train but we must use the 'Mech now, before it is too late. They do not yet know that we have salvaged this technology, so the element of surprise is with us. Rest assured that as soon as you make yourself known, they will throw everything at you. Hold them back, cover our escape, and luck be with you...

The Solo System
By: Chad Mestdagh
Solitaire artificial intelligence system that can be used for a multilude of games.

Players: 1 Ages: 10+
Description: The Solo System is not actually a game, but rather an artificial intelligence that can be applied to many games.

It is composed of 4 decks that simulate different parts of an artificial intelligence's decision making process. It requires a bit of interpretation in order for it to be applied to so many different games, but it is extremely flexible.

Albarrana
By: Topias Uotila & Tarmo Juhola
Albarrana is a late medieval castle building game played with building blocks.

Players 2 to 4. (Rules allow for unlimited number, but eventually everyone runs out of blocks.)
Time 60 to 150 minutes
Age 8+

Albarrana consists of three rounds of building and fighting with the best castle winning in the end. Game components are common items: playing cards, dice and blocks such as LEGO. With the rules freely available the game adheres to PnP ideology.

Albarrana actually feels like designing and building a castle rather than managing a construction project.

Arctic Dash: A Narwhal Race
By: Marianne Waage
All the tasty fish have been eaten and it's time to make the yearly trek to the wintering grounds. Dash beneath the ice and be the first to the other side.

Players: 3 to 5
Description: Players take turns racing to the front. As the lead narwhal reaches the edge, she decides how the path is laid out. But don't get discouraged: foil the leader with a lucky roll and force the race along inconvenient paths through slowing seaweed or around rocky walls. "Bump" into other players in the hopes of gaining a bit more lead with a lucky roll of the dice.

Arctic Dash is designed to keep the race close, provide a few avenues for light strategy, but also not penalize younger, less experienced gamers.
