It says it quite clearly in the "Goals for 2017" item in my profile:

1) Play everything in the collection.
2) Buy no new games until the above has been completed.

That didn't quite work, but I lasted until 24th January, so over three weeks, which is more than last year..! I consider that a success!

Have you also broken your resolution? If so, don't beat yourself up, just come here and post the straw that broke the camel's back along with how long you lasted. There's always next year, right?

Broke my resolution on 24th January for this.

Why?

KT (my gaming partner) loves computer Civ games, but Through the Ages: A New Story of Civilization is probably way too long and fiddly for us, so we needed something more approachable in the collection. KT has also said that she doesn't like developing into the modern era, preferring to stay in the gaming past. I already have Polis: Fight for the Hegemony in the collection, but unplayed, so this seems like the perfect stepping towards that reputedly awesome game, and if KT enjoys this then she might just move up to Polis as well. This seems to be getting more difficult to find, but I found a copy for a decent price and instabought. At least the money from my current auction will cover it, so technically it's not really buying at all...!

This year I thought I was being smart, I didn't make any lofty unachievable resolutions about not buying any new games all year. No, I resoloved to plan things out month by month, sell old games to finance new ones, and generally concentrate on playing games more than acquiring them.

My other resolution was 'don't pay rrp for anything.' Made with some regret as I love game shops, but when funds are tight I have to play it smart.

The goal for January was simple. I knew the new expansion for Eldritch Horror was due out, so I flogged a couple of things to have the cash ready for it. Buy the expansion, but nothing else, that's the plan.

Then I realised Arkham Horror: The Card Game – The Dunwich Legacy: Expansion was also due out. A bit tired of the core set scenarios, so I had to order that. And of course I may as well get Arkham Horror: The Card Game – Curse of the Rougarou: Scenario Pack while I'm at it. Ordered them from Boardgameguru, so at least the no rrp resolution was still intact.

Then, last week, I found myself in Leeds, and visited the proper excellent Travelling Man, just to 'have a look' at their sale. I think I showed incredible willpower in resisting the many bargaintastic offers (they had GMT stuff 50% off!), but still picked up Arctic Scavengers: Recon and a fancy storage box for my Dicemasters stuff. Dicemasters, which I've not even played yet. Still, they're only expansions, and they were bargains, so they don't really count.

Then, yesterday, I was in an flgs in Chesterfield and picked up Dogs of War. Sure, it's a full game not an expansion, but it was a bargain at a mere fifteen notes.

Aaaand then today, I was in Patriot games in Sheffield (another lovely shop), and saw the latest pack for the Star Wars LCG. Gotta keep up with that, it's my most played game after all. Purchased at rrp!

So to summarise the month, I didn't buy the thing I said I was going to get, I impulse bought a bunch of other stuff, and I paid rrp for something.

So four weeks into the year, both resolutions broken. Good stuff.
