How To Use SGoYT
1 Play a game, solo.
2 Post an entry on this geeklist and tell us all about it and your experience.
3 Be nice, and fun, but be nice, all ways and always.
4 Thumb what you like, don't hesitate to ask or answer questions, have fun!

It's extremely helpful (but by no means mandatory) to include some thumbsup and some thumbsdown describing pros and cons of the game you have played. It's a great visual aid to summarise your post and also might help to keep the wallet damage down a bit!

heartheartheart February is Love/Heart Month heartheartheart

February, the month of Valentines day, is also CHD Awareness and Heart Month. I hope you don't mind but I would like to take this opportunity to mention that this is a great month to consider donating blood - if you are able.

"Giving blood makes it possible for many people to lead normal healthy lives. Every year thousands of patients require blood transfusions in our hospitals, because they are undergoing surgery, recovering from cancer or have been in a serious accident."

I used to donate more or less every three months when I lived in London but when I moved to Ireland they would not accept my blood as I had lived in England during the BSE (Mad Cow Disease) crisis. I try and donate whenever I am back in England.

So these days I mostly try to cajole others to consider starting, recommencing or even just thinking about it.

So, if you are not constrained by any physical, geographical, philosophical or lifestyle issues please PLEASE do consider auditioning for donation. (I say audition because they can be very fussy, so don't feel bad if they turn you down, feel GOOD because you tried.) It is even more important if you have a more unusual blood type - I am completely ordinary, O+, but it all helps.

Remember, if you're giving, at the very least that is haemoglobin in the bank for yourself!!

This month, GG will be awarded to anyone...

who plays a game and provides a picture of where love or heart or blood features in that game

who plays a game and provides a picture of where Ireland or anything Irish features in that game (really I should have volunteered to do next month but that would have been too obvious, amirite?)

An entry in the 2017 9-card Nanogame PnP Design Contest. After this first play I'm looking forward to giving it another try, or several. There are lots of choices to make in a very simple system that captures some of the flavor of The Running Man. I ended up with one runner making it through the 3 levels with some fortunate card placement in the final one. A mediocre score, but a great learning experiment.

Been a while since this came out - I've enjoyed several face to face plays of it. I'm now involved with play-testing the solo variant for the upcoming kickstarter, so this was a quick refresher of the rules playing both sides to my best abilities. The art is all placeholder stuff borrowed from the net and won't feature in the commercial release - but I like it anyway.

But it's the game that's the star. This is making me really excited to see Kilforth arrive, not least because it's going to look stunning, but for the design of it - but it then means this is finally going to get its moment in the spotlight too. This will hopefully be another raging success for Tristan, as I find it excellent fun already.

In this game, the Saxon forces started stronger, burning through their deck of objectives to arrive at the Hastings finale. As you'll see from the damage chits, they tore into the three contested wedges. You win two, by inflicting ten damage apiece, and win the game (you can also win by defeating your opponent's leader). The Norman start was rougher. I needed to complete objectives with zeal, but little came into my deck. I was also bereft of resources. I laboured over the early objectives, but rallied late. The Saxons would have won on wedges, this round. But William the Bastard kept drawing cards that allowed for damage on poor Harold.

Predictably, he should have kept an eye out for the archer which won the Normans the game. ninja

Another couple of games testing the posited solo mode for this upcoming game. Finding it a real challenge - and I'm beginning to wonder what the odds are that I can kill William the Bastard prior to reaching the Hastings objective.

The way the AI generates its field of warriors is both smooth and intimidating; I'd anticipated this could be lop-sided, given the solo player sticks to the rules of the two-player game - but so far it remains a tight battle.

Loving the game at the moment... slightly less perfunctory thoughts will be reported to the testing group, Ibbo. But this feels like an excellent job so far.

More playtesting of the solo mode of this really rather great game. This time I was absolutely hammered into the ground by the encroaching Norman forces.

It began with me placing an elite archer, aimed square at William the Bastard. I'd hopes of this being my chance to put him in the ground, prior to reaching the battle. Nope. The first AI draw was an event to destroy one of my units with one or less zeal.

Gone on the first turn. shake

After that, I was on the back foot all game. The Normans fielded some impressive warriors - although I managed to keep their archers from pecking at me too heavily, with careful placement of infantry bearing a "when placed..." detail.

But... William raced for Hastings and began tearing into the three wedges, whilst I still had two objectives to deal with, prior to my own arrival. I made it to the battlefield in tatters... but I have to give props to the Archbishop of Canterbury, attempting to thwart the march of two fighting nobles and the elite Norman cavalry on his own, with the power of raw zeal - and zero might.

Yeah, that ended well.

Really pleased with the solo game, and we've discussed some tweaks earlier today which I think will help the AI continue to press you. (Although they had no issue this time!) It's also shown me that timing your arrival at the battle is vital - having enough units in place to actually be effective when you get there, picking that moment, rather than just desperately needing to be there first. (Yeah, sounds obvious, doesn't it?)

My eldest step-daughter is visiting and, despite her unhealthy interest at hammering me at CV (repeatedly), she asked to have a crack at this, as it was still on the table. Played a game as the Normans, and it was nice to have a fresh two-player game to put our latest round of solo testing into perspective.

It's a great game, either way, but I think I'm beginning to enjoy it more in solo mode. (Played it again later just to be sure.)

After the excitement of some big unboxings (Gloomhaven, Lobotomy and Millennium Blades - the latter is still going on), it was nice to return to the immediacy of a fresh playtest of the solo variant of this.

Thought my luck had changed as I raced ahead through the objectives, this time, leaving William floundering with a lack of zeal to press towards Hastings. I was three objectives ahead, at one point, but things turned fast. I was losing cards out of my hand and having units killed off by some awful Norman event draws. I was strong in zeal throughout but, despite arriving at Hastings first and setting up my team, I lacked enough might to win the day. William wiped the floor with me, claiming two of the three wedges on the same round.

And then I hurt my brain.

30 Rails is a nifty concept, especially when you consider it's one laminated page, a dry erase marker, and two dice, everything should be shiny, happy, and bright, right?!

Choo-choo! yellowtrain Choo-choo!

Nope. Not even an N gauge railroad could have survived the convoluted dice-driven layout on this inaugural run! One big derailment before the engine could get up steam.

Plus, when you've used your brain all day, math does not compute.

Brain needs conceptual puzzles and pretty cards/tiles. No sums that can't be calculated with fingers and toes.

Poor brain.

Haven't played this for a while so after a quick refresh of the rules I decided to give the advanced game a try as I haven't played that version yet.

Only got 22pts which I guess isn't that good, the rules show 40+ as an okay score but that is for the basic game. Looks like it's going to take a few plays to get the advanced game "beat"

thumbsup Can vote for this in the Golden Geek Awards!, I have!
thumbsup Fun and quick to print off and get playing.
thumbsdown Advanced game is a bit more of a brain burner which may put some folks off.

Just tried again -

Got 35pts this time so getting better . With the two overides (choose own dice face) removed in the advanced game luck is more of a factor but this can be managed a little with the added 'shares' feature.

Dug the rules out of the WIP thread- I know, I should know how to play... I got it set up (that's what I needed the rules for...) and then proceeded to get rolling.

I scored 23.

Um, I'm not sure this is the game for me. I do need some more plays and to work more on the setup. And the planing. Humph. It's now in a sheet protector with the rules. I should be able to get to it again.

I saw I had posted about a water variant- maybe I should work on that.

I have the '65 solo system on the table. I'm hoping to play through all (or most) of the solo scenarios this month. The production value on this game is incredible. The rules, while clear, seem to have a few small gaps, but it's a tactical war game, so I think for the most part any questions can be solved by logical leaps.

I sold 7 Wonders a while ago because I never played it. At home, I play games mostly solo or maybe with another player or two but that is rate. Recently, we were invited to a game night and played our friends' copy and we had such a good time. We were six players. So digging around BGG I discovered that a new 2 player version had come out and that the great BGG community had created some well respected variants. So I got lucky and was able to trade for 7 Wonders Duel.

I just got this game and played a solo game tonight using the "scott" variant rules that can be found here: https://boardgamegeek.com/filepage/139402/simple-quick-solo-...

First of all, I had a great time! Second of all, I lost 60-64. Looking forward to many more plays

thumbsup Easy to learn if you already know 7 Wonders
thumbsup Great theme
thumbsup Love the war track with the feeling of danger getting closer to home
thumbsup AI is very easy to use (what a relief compared to COIN AI!!!!)
thumbsup After only one play the solo AI seems challenging and made me think. there are even ways to make the AI harder when I get better
thumbsup Set up and take down are faster than I would have expected

thumbsdown None so far (it did take longer than the 30 mins on the box for my first play but then again 7 Wonders always took longer too so i wasn't surprised)

Ok, so in my 2nd game ever of this wonderful game I got destroyed by Scott the AI tonight. 59-74. Ouch! I was trying so hard to prevent a science victory and trying to secure 10 points by invading his land that I missed out on some key guild cards - especially the money one as he accumulates lots of money so that stack counted twice!

thumbsup thematic and beautiful
thumbsup not easy against AI or maybe I am just a total newb....whistle
thumbsup fast (plays in just over an hour including set up and take down and I am a very slow player)

thumbsdown days are too short and I can only squeeze one game in tonight

Yes! I finally beat Scott the AI 65-52 after my 3rd attempt. I followed advice on BGG and tried to choke Scott of resources and it worked - barely. As you can see he accumulated a ton of civilian buildings (+20 pts difference) but got all the guilds (+19 pts difference) and had all the wonders (+9 pts difference). It was a close call both militarily and from a science point of view. Phew...

I did a first playtest of my 7 Wonders Duel solo variant. It is mixture of Scott the Jerk and the New Bedford AI.
Here's a quick rundown of the idea:
- Bot gets buildings for free (like Scott)
- Bot follows a priority list / flowchart to decide which building to buy (like New Bedford)
- Several bot personalities with different priority lists
- Bot selects wonders depending on personality

For my first play I tried a bot with a focus on building wonders and blue buildings. I call him "Perikles". Perikles has the following priorities:
Age 1+2: Build wonder -> Buildings that provide resources (gray, brown and some yellow) if needed for wonder -> Blue -> Red (if player ahead in military) -> Green -> Yellow
Age 3: Build wonder -> Red (if military > +/- 5) or Green (if player would get > 3 different Green) -> max VP -> Green -> Other
Wonder selection: max VP -> random

The final result was a tie at 68 vs 68.

I'm not sure yet if the flowchart is a bit too complicated but it definitely makes the bot feel more like playing a real opponent. Also since the bot is cheating and playing somehow intelligent he might be too strong. The first game was perfectly balanced but I definitely need more plays to make sure I didn't just get very lucky.

As a next step I want to test Perikles more and then work on Alexander (military) and Aristotle (science). However, one thing I'm worried about is that 7 Wonders Duel is too much of a tactical game and that giving the bots a strategic focus is detrimental to their success. On the other hand they are cheating so it might level out.

Got another three playtests in tonight against my "Perikles" bot.

Game 1:
Military victory for me. This made me adjust the flowchart a little bit to let the bot counter military advantage earlier.

Game 2:
65 - 66 for Perikles. Also added some rules how to break ties (he will chose the card that uncovers the least new cards)

Game 3:
Was going for another military victory but the changes I made after game 1 and 2 seemed to work. The bot successfully countered my military strategy by denying the red cards early enough and not uncovering any new cards if possible.
Since I was going hard for military the other areas suffered too much and I lost with 68 - 72.

Here is the current decision flowchart:

Age 1: Resource E Red (if +/- 3) / Green (if 2+ different) E Wonder E Blue E Red / Green (if player > AI) E Yellow

Age 2: Red (if +/- 4) / Green (if 3+ different) E Wonder E Resource E Blue E Red / Green (if player > AI) E Yellow

Age 3: Red (if +/- 5) / Green (if 4+ different) E maximum VP E Red

Tie breaker: maximum VP / military power E least uncover E cheaper E hate (i.e. bot will take whichever card the player wants more).

Wonder draft:
maximum VP E additional turn E resources

Additional rules:
The bot gets all buildings for free.
The bot does not gain any money.
The player gets first turn in every age.

Just finished reading the rules on this one. I am going to set the solo Japan runs wild scenario tomorrow.

I am very curios to see how the game plays. There are some interesting concepts here and I like the idea of the chit pull to execute actions.

Fingers are crossed that this may become my Go To Game on the Pacific Theater of WWII.

Heading back to the strategic realm of the Pacific Theater of WWII.

After my "clunker" play and going over the designers AAR which is posted on Consimworld, I feel like I have a good grasp of the rules and I am now going to play through the "short" campaign game which is 8 turns instead of 9 and begins in May 1942 after the initial Japanese onslaught.

So far, I have found the system the best and smoothest I have ever played on the Pacific Theater.

Do you like the idea of a classic Dominion-like deckbuilder (fixed market of cards) but with, you know...some kind of theme? And without constant shuffling? And that can be played solo?! Boy do I have the game for you!

This is more fun than expected. I played about 5 times already, with the easiest 2 nemesis* (Rageborne & Carapace Queen) and I won all games (a bit troubling, see below) but I still felt challenged each time. The last game I thought it finally got the best of me, but as I started gathering the bits I realised I mixed unleash with swarm so I got back to play and beat the *** out of the Carapace Queen ninja

thumbsup a great mix of classic deckbuilding tropes with some pretty cool ideas

thumbsup the system of preparing your spells this turn and triggering them on your next one (combined with the fact that you don`t know exactly when that next turn is gonna be) is awesome but for that reason...

thumbsdown true solo is less exciting; it works, but you know that either you`re gonna go next or the nemesis...so 2 characters is the best way to play I feel (easily manageable)

thumbsup I can see why the art direction might not be for everyone, but I really like this sort of indie-videogame look

thumbsup lots of replayability with 4 nemesis ** (3 really, the easiest one is sort of an easy tutorial) and 8 mages

thumbsdownthumbsup it seems a bit on the easy side for now; but I played against level 1 and 3 nemesis, with the maximum being 10 (although the other 2 nemesis are level 5) and each one has a hardcore mode so I`m not too worried about that

thumbsup lots of potential for further content and the designer seems intent on providing it; there`s 2 expansions out, with a stand-alone one in testing, challenges posted by the designer etc; the box definitely has space for a ton of extra content!thumbsup

thumbsdown they went cheap on production. The cards and player mats are all slightly bent, just enough to send everything spinning when touched. The breaches should have been cardboard or at least thick paper, not thin glossy paper and the counters are simply BAD

thumbsdown maybe it`s just me but the flavour text is so pretentious and full of gravitas. Come on it`s just a game...some light tone and humour maybe? At least on 1 card?

thumbsdown I want more player cards! Each game you play with 9 out of 27. Compare to Dominion, where you pick 10 out of 50. The 2 expansions currently available offer only 3-4 more, but the next one (since it`s standalone) will probably add another 27 (I hope for more).

But none of that changes the fact that the game is very fun, tense and feels fresh. High recommendation from me.

*nemeses??? I have no idea.

** still have no idea.

Bought this last weekend because I like deckbuilders, coops and have a goal to go for (beat the evil instead of gain the most points)...

So first I tried it real solo and lost badly a few times in a row... then I started to use two charakters and had lots of fun, including my first victory!!

Brama did the last strike against Rageborn and Gravehold got five lives left.

Oh man!

This was so much fun...a short while ago I asked folks opinion between this and Shadowrift and it was kind of a toss up for folks but I slightly favored Aeon's End.

I was right (or I'll love them both)...this game hit my sweet spot in my first play. I went in two-handed with Mist and Brama and had a narrow victory. So much fun. It was the recommended starting game so I've a feeling it favors the player.

thumbsup Love the theme (and I liked the artwork)
thumbsup The deckbuilding mechanic was very cool
thumbsup Just enough press your luck with turn order randomizer
thumbsup thumbsdown Setup was a bit fiddly but I bought a Kickstarter version that was already played once so I had to undo a couple of the decks...so I'm not sure it will be fiddly once the box is arranged better.

I played solo yesterday using 2 characters(Adelheim and Mist) and faced Rageborne. I ended up winning but it was pretty close. Adelheim with 1 life point left,Mist with 2 life points left and my Gravehold with 19 life point left. I enjoyed this game a lot and it's always tense.

thumbsupPlaying 2 characters at the same time is not a problem and offer a lot of options.(most of all it's fun and not too fiddly).

thumbsupThe game don't take too much time to play and you are never bored. You never know what is coming next.

thumbsup I need to try more but i find the game pretty balanced.

This game is so fun and i will back the kickstarter for the new expansion Aeon's End: War Eternal coming this year!

so after last nights play of Agricola: All Creatures Big and Small leading me to a failed attempt of setting this up on the small table out in the "project" camper, I decided to have a go at it tonight on the big table inside. After my initial attempt at a set up, whilst during I learned my son had smeared honey all over the table, I cleaned that up, dried it off and all that, and then proceeded:

I built a pretty impressive farmstead. I got lucky with grabbing the Mushroom collector or whatever he is called in my initial hand, but even without him I really had no trouble feeding my family through the entire game. In fact, I can say that this is probably the first game I've ever played (solo or multiplayer) where I didn't have to worry about food, and so I got to concentrate on all the other fun stuff.

I ended up with a 47. The best score I think I have ever landed in this game, so, I feel pretty good about that.

I've always harped about how I don't like "beat your own score" games, and I still think that that holds true for the most part, but there is something about Uwes' games that make me look at them differently. They are like jig-saw puzzles, in the sense that I feel relaxed playing them, and I'm not really "trying" to win something, just going through the motions. And I like that.

Now... to back the second printing of Black Orchestra on kickstarter or not. hmmm.... anyone want to weigh in?

Edit: there is always that feeling of, "If I only had one more turn" in Uwes' games, and I think that is my opponent in these games, if that makes any sense
