One of my favourite genres! Here's some of my favourite and most memorable games (which are sometimes not the same thing).

I also do love network-building games, which I suppose are similar to maze games! But then I'll end up adding a lot of train games to this list! So to me the difference between maze games and network-building games are:

* Network-building games: Building efficient networks
* Maze games: Building and navigating through inefficient networks

Please add your favourites as comments!

Other related GeekLists:
* Games with player-morphing mazes.

Mathematically "complete"

The game consists of all ways to lay four paths onto an octagonal tile. Ingenious board design.

Unique objectives for the "Team Up" variant, in which players have to connect all their pawns into one network. The "main" variant, where players simply have to cross the board, is a bit light but still an exciting game.

For me, strategies for the opening game remain opaque as I don't feel my initial moves have much of a long-term impact. I have to play this more often!

Best rules-to-depth ratio

Elegant, minimalist rules and gorgeous components! It also has counter-intuitive strategies, which sometimes is a hindrance when playing with newbies!

Best multi-player solitaire game ever!

A board game implementation of Reiner Knizia's Labyrinth. Although this app has way more bells-and-whistles than the more humble board game, I definitely prefer the board game -- possibly because I'm not a computer game fan anymore.

Game I wish I owned during my childhood!

Oddly enough, doesn't get much love from my gaming group! Too trashy for Ameritrash fans, and too much card text for my non-gamer friends.

One huge issue with maze games is that although planning a route through a maze is awesome, taking turns to go through it is boring. Wiz-War solves this through violence! Hence, when I play, I insist all the counter-attack spells be removed from the deck!

Gravity-based maze game

Incredibly light game play, but a very tactile experience! Players build a maze by randomly drawing and placing tiles that contain channels through which a ball bearing can travel. Once the maze is complete, players tilt the board then drop ball bearings at the elevated edge, hoping that they end up on the opposite edge. The unpredictable physics make this even more exciting!

My first Euro, I think!

The game feels very chaotic and never-ending at first, but as the game progresses, long paths open up and the game accelerates.

Even though Master Labyrinth is superior to its original as objectives are not totally secret, this classic doesn't have much appeal with adults

Another childhood favourite that I still own!

Another move-your-pawns-to-the-other-side game. The game features an alterable maze whose parts are controlled by only one player. This enables players to interact with each other even once opposing pawns are no longer close to each other. Also, pawns move as rooks, which enable clever power moves.

I wish the maze segments were interchangeable to add to game variety.

Bonus points for the very sturdy travel edition!

Feels like a Euro from the early 2000s!

I bought this game because (a) it's based in Venice; (b) it's a maze gamel (c) there was no information online; and, most importantly, (d) it was on sale.

After reading the rules, I expected mediocrity. (And was quite disappointed how pasted on the theme is.) It's a play-a-card-then-move game. But the game does offer small yet interesting hand management decisions and the maze aspect is more challenging than expected.

It's a maze game disguised as a racing game!

I am not a big fan of racing games. This one is an exception as it feels like a maze game with a huge push-your-luck element. Doesn't get much love among my gamer friends either as on its surface looks way too simplistic (and I don't think racing games in general get much love).

Perfect information, maze-shifting game

Obscure game with a pasted-on theme of escaping a mechanically enhanced pyramid, complete with teleports and shifting platforms. The tiles themselves are rhombuses, which makes the game even more unique.

A bit dry and AP-prone. There's ample opportunities to screw over your opponents with clever tile shifts, but then your opponents will consume lots of AP time figuring out a countermove

Gimmick here: use paths underneath tiles!

Yet another abstract of getting to the other side of the board. The gimmick of using paths underneath tiles does feel more like a gimmick than an innovation as players spend more time trying to visualize the network of paths underneath the tiles than on strategy. Perhaps it would have been easier to print these "underneath" paths in a different colour on top of each tile?

Feels like a Flash-based web game!

Another game getting not enough love: Inflicts too much AP to gamers (whom unfortunately abhor timers) and too many fiddly rules for non-gamers.

See Theseus and the Minotaur by Robert Abbott for a similar puzzle game (that predates this board game).

WANT TO TRY/FIND/MAKE!

I discovered this game through the geeklist Unusual Abstract Games That We Love - Please Contribute . This game sounds AWESOME! Chess-like; pieces aren't limited by which directions they can move or number of squares that they can travel. Instead, they are limited by the number of Direction Changes (DCs) or turns through the maze that they can make.

Rules are scarce, and it looks like this game has never been published.

Asymmetrical roll-and-move game. One player builds a maze while the other rolls-and-moves a pawn on the maze until the pawn falls off the maze (and wins) or all the tiles have been played (and loses).

The game was unfortunately lost a long time ago

Even as a kid I knew this wasn't a great game. It's just a roll-and-move game. The gimmick here is that you create your playing figure with modelling clay/Plasticine, and then if an opponent (or you, I forget) land on a particular space, you can CRUSH another player's figure with various implements.

One of the most strategic "maze" games out there!

To me, this feels like a maze game. The maze is the surface of the structure that the players build and manipulate with cubes. By moving these cubes, players open up and close off paths for themselves and their opponent. Although these cubes do act like pawns in a chess game (i.e. they prevent opponents from killing each other too easily), this one feels much more like a maze as it's trickier to visualize the paths that wrap around the structure.

What makes this game more strategic than the rest of the games on this list is that players own cubes; the components that make up the maze/board aren't neutral. This allows for much more control and strategy.

(Shuttles also has board parts that are player-owned, but in Axiom, the objective is more strategic -- "capture" an opposing scepter, which means pieces move all over the place, not just towards one direction.)
