Getting new games is fun. Right? Or is it stressful? Do you buy games one at a time? In bulk? From online stores? Or from your friendly local retailer? Do you only buy new games? Or do you buy used games?

OK, so you have identified some games to dispose of... How do you do it? Sell them? on BGG? eBay? local? Or do you donate games?

Monday saw an all day session at my house. I work four days a week so often have Mondays off. With two of my group retired and another between jobs I am lucky to be able to get a full four for an occasional whole day in the week.

Kanagawa got a first play. I was really impressed. I love the twist on Colloretto-style set collecting with the double use cards. It played in the time it said on the box (which is a first for me!). 45 minutes of interesting quick decisions left me wanting more. This is a keeper.

We had an epic game of Terraforming Mars with the full deck and drafting. For the first time we used the variant which does not allow 'take-that' cards for the first three rounds. This is good as early use of take-that can undermine emerging engines. The game was so close, 75/74/74/68. Wow, such a tense ending.

A game of La Granja: No Siesta didn't allay my fears for this game: the end game is tough to rush and so everyone does almost everything and the differences at the end are minimal. Each game ends up as the last game even though the decisions throughout have been different. So you feel you are making interesting decisions through the game but they end up having been rather meaningless.

Round five of Fabled Fruit: this one isn't tiring. THe new cards coming out are getting more and more interesting.

A monster game of Kakerlakenpoker Royal ended the session as it so often does. This little game just never tires with our group and the meta-game that it has turned into is something quite extraordinary. It has entered my top three games of all time. So simple, so perfect.

Saturday with the neighbours:
Ticket to Ride: Rails & Sails on the Great Lakes for a third time. I must play the global map one day. I was playing with non-gamer neighbours so we did away with the rather confusing harbours and played the game straight. As ever with TTR it was a wholesome and enjoyable experience. And this map is surprisingly tough with five.

My neighbours brought out Cinco Linko which is multi-player Connect 4. Despite the ridiculous simplicity of the rules it was surprisingly engaging. One of those games you think "why has no one ever thought of this before".

I thought Fuji Flush was the simplest of rule sets but a couple of the non-gamers at the table did not get the game at all for some time. Clearly the rule set is not as intuitively simple as I had thought. The problem was that they could not understand why when you play a card that is less than others around the table it doesn't get instantly defeated. I just accept this as part of the rule set but you forget that non-gamers don't always see things from a gamers view and so the apparent contradiction of the rules in this area really troubled them. That was a lesson for me in terms of how to explain games to non-gamers.

Time to add add my comments for the wide variety of games I played in January.

Bohnanza - My night to be a bean farmer.

Ticket to Ride Map Collection: Volume 5 – United Kingdom & Pennsylvania - Not my night to be a railroad baron

Suburbia - Been a while since I've seen this one. I like the way the tile drafting is handled, still don't do very well at it.

Olympus - Didn't care for it last time, and this repeat peformance did nothing to change my mind. I don't care for the way it way it handles the buildings/bonuses in fact most everything about it.

Hansa Teutonica: Britannia I think this map hates me. I've not been able to figure out how to make effective use of it. While I'm competitive on other maps I get wiped out here.

Champions of Midgard - Actually like the mix of worker placement and dice rolling. You can gamble and try to push with just enough or waste resources to be sure. This time I was the money miester and came close by buying victory points during the game. Also I was also able to succeed with my destiny cards.

Between Two Cities - Liked the idea of cooperatively building with your neighbors. The card draft idea works as well. However, the scoring complexity and individual determination did work for me. Can pass.

Splendor - My wife was happy she finally got a win.

Attika - My wife's Thebes did well, blocked the others out and ran out the tiles.

Steam Park - I dislike speed games so keep that in mind. The bag seeding pulling of visitors was an interesting mechanic. However, I really despised the speed rolling aspect of a bunch of dice figure out what you want move them and make the claim for turn order and avoid the last penalty. Next using your actions to build on a restrictive private layout didn't seem to match the previous phase
Couldn't wait for it to be over.

Kraftwagen = Didn't care for this one. The Glen More way of handling the actions was ok, but the research action of pick one of the two when it was your time to get the action seemed off.
If you got an advantage early with what came up in research, that advantage gave too much leverage for others to compete, the market manipulation aspect didn't really work.
Will avoid in the future or play Glen More.

Fresco - A clever resource management action selection game I can see why it is popular.
The turn order selection mechanism is great even picking last sometimes works toward your advantage. it coupled with the cube color mixing makes for a nice thematic element. The secret action selection makes gives you a lot of decision points and you have work around what you think you will get. Sometimes it is better to hang back and prepare other times go for broke. There are very few turns where you feel out of decisions.

Ticket to Ride: Rails & Sails = Great Lakes Map - got slaughtered in this one - routes cut off - picked an off mix of trains and boats.

N/A   Sweets Stack NEW! a multiplayer tetris type game, if you like this sort of thing and I do, it's fun

N/A   Agamemnon x2 NEW! 2 player majority control game, it does this very well if not all that exciting

N/A   The Garden Game NEW! this is a old game kind of MonopolyxRummy game. I can see how it never caught on. Despite have some cool concepts like the cards are seed packs that get planted upright onto the board
to represent plants. I however would not know anything about that as I spent most of the game missing my turn due to cards like this
and landing on the "Ants in my Pants" space

 7   En Garde NEW!
 N/A   A Feast for Odin

Highlights of games played 1/31-2/6:

The best kind of week for gaming - not only did I get to play a lot of games, but I also got to play games with Tom and Jeroen, in addition to the wonderful crew of folks I get to game with regularly.

In addition to getting in a great playtest of one of my designs, some of the games I played were:

Tak (Joe=2) - not my kind of game, but it looks great and at first blush seems quite decent.

Jump Drive (Joe=25) - I more than doubled my plays of the game last week - not something that happens often. My 10 plays of the game last Saturday is probably the most plays I've managed of a game in a day outside of Race (which I played 20 times one day).

Autoscooter (Joe=24) - this was the game in my collection it had been the longest since I last played, since it was my first game played in 2016, and I hadn't played it again since.

Die Siedler von Catan (Joe=100+) and Frisch Fisch (Joe=54) - I'm up to 11 of the 17 games I rate a 10 played in 2017...

Don Q. und der Dreh mit den Windmühlen, Extrablatt, Jati, and Rolling Japan (Joe=20) - without any intent of doing so, I ended up playing four different games from my collection for the 20th time this past week. Of the 308 games I own:

55 I've played 5-9 times.
119 I've played 10-19 times.
90 I've played 20-49 times.
33 I've played 50-99 times.
11 I've played 100+ times.

SeaFall (Joe=5) - A more fun game for me, even if it was a blowout, _and_ there was again an inconveniently timed event.
