The aim of this series is to have a spot to discuss how a game plays for people who are colorblind. For the unfamiliar, colorblindness is more like blurry vision than the ability to not see any color (except for a small percentage - monochromacy/achromatopsia). For those with poor vision, a small letter E far away is hard to discern, and a giant letter E right in front of them is easy to discern. Similarly for someone with red/green deficiency (deuteranopes) may have a hard time discerning a small red swatch far away, but close up it can be clearer. There is a wide spectrum of blurry vision problems, and there is also with color blindness. This review is for discussing how colors are used in this game, and how much colorblindness (atleast mine - deuteranomalous) effects gameplay.

For example, It's alot easier to compare colors when they are next to another, or if there is a large amount of color.

A small amount of color alone is harder mb

One of the comments below mentioned another site that offers color blind reviews (and a few other types of accessibility). If I come across any others, I'll link them here.

Reviewing Scoville for Color Blindness

Summary
Scoville is a very heavy color game, where they tried to do quite a bit to help make it easier on color blind players. Without the pepper heights it would be completely unplayable for me. With them, there are only a few areas that make having color blindness difficult.

Reviewing Merkator for Color Blindness

Summary

Merkator is quite a fun game that at first glance looks like it would be a nightmare for a colorblind player. Upon inspection, Merkator seems to have nailed all the spots that could be a major issue. The only problem I needed assistance with was initially sorting the bag of mixed cubes.

Reviewing Scythe for Color Blindness

Summary
Scythe is a game with a lot of colors and pieces. If the colors were harder for me to distinguish, I would not be able to play it. In the few plays I have had so far, I have not had to stop the game and have other players clarify the color of pieces. In that regard, it is a colorblind success and quite fun.

Reviewing Stone Age for Color Blindness

Summary
Stone Age has player pieces that are the same shape and only discernable by color. Despite that, colorblind issues seem to primarily affect bookkeeping and not the gameplay. The only way it could have been better, would have been dropping one of Red/Green for White/Black.

Reviewing The Castles of Burgandy for color Blindness

Summary
The Castles of Burgundy is a fun game, although there are a couple gameplay spots that could be hurdles for a colorblind player. You will want to check and see if the colors on the player boards are distinct enough for your eyesight. If not, you could augment the hexes on the player board with small icons to help distinguish the colors of the hexes.

Reviewing Airlines Europe for Color Blindness

Summary

Airlines Europe has many inputs to your decisions that are made exclusively on the color of small tokens. It may be easier for a color seeing player to quickly read the board state for each company. As it is, I avoid playing this game completely. Setting up the pictures for this review was more of a trial than fun. The only reason it hasn't been dumped into the trade pile, is that my wife enjoys it (as long as I'm not in the game)

Reviewing 7 Wonders Duel for Color Blindness

Summary
Colors are used exclusively in a couple places in 7 Wonders Duel and may present issues for a colorblind player. The structure of the game allows color clarification without affecting gameplay or compromising the colorblind player.

Reviewing Caylus for Color Blindness

Summary
Caylus suffers where a lot of games do. They reference physical items on cards/tiles with a similar icon. If the shades aren’t perfect, it can be really difficult for a color blind player. If they do a new reprint, it would be nice to redo the resources and the building tiles. I would buy that in a heartbeat. As it is, I try and stumble over the color issues because I enjoy the gameplay.

Reviewing Istanbul for Color Blindness

Summary
The publishers of Istanbul have done a good job to make the game colorblind accessible. The key in most games is not making color the only point of reference between pieces, and the goods pictures work well here.

Reviewing Jaipur for Color Blindness

Jaipur is a colorful game, that can be played without paying attention to the colors. I don’t have any colorblind issues when playing the game. Highly recommend unless dead pandas frighten you.

Reviewing Agricola for Color Blindness

Summary
In Agricola, as in most of Uwe Rosenberg games, colors are not used as the only way to discern icons on cards and the board. Most, if not all, of his games seem to take care to be friendly to colorblind players, including distinct icons or text. The game uses a limited set of colors for resources and animals, which usually would present problems for me (Four Brown items in two shades: Wood, Clay, Cattle, Horses). The only issue I usually have is refilling the wood spot with clay

Reviewing Village for Color Blindness

Summary
The method of knocking off family members using the time track in order to maximize your points is really clever and fun. Pulling random cubes from a bag and then pouring over the colors to see if you have the correct kind is no fun at all. If the game had just inverted the player piece colors and the cubes, the game would be easier to play. Village could have been a really nifty game. As it is, it is close to impossible to play and in the trade pile.

Reviewing La Granja for Color Blindness

Summary
La Granja took an interesting approach in not using lots of different bits for different types of goods. There may be a chunk of icons to learn, but nothing in the core game pieces is color specific. If one pair of colors that the game came with does not work for you, they can easily be swapped out with cubes from another game. I really enjoy this game and have no color problems when playing it. Pronunciation Problems... yeah "Hey hon, let's play La Gran-ha... Gran-ga...Laaaaa..."

Reviewing Lost Cities for Color Blindness

Summary
Lost Cities took a great approach and added thematic pictures to augment their colors. This extra piece of information can greatly aid a color blind player. The only thing better might have been a suit symbol next to the number (Diamond, Square, etc). Then cards could be recognized without pulling apart your hand.

Reviewing Lewis & Clark for Color Blindness

Summary
Lewis & Clark has six goods in different colors. That usually leads to problems for color blind players. I don’t have any issues discerning the colors, and the newer versions with stickers should eliminate that completely. The only issue could be if you cannot tell your little dude on the map from another players.

Reviewing Coal Baron for Color Blindness

Summary
Color in Coal Baron is a critical element in the game. If any colors are hard for you to discern, you may struggle playing this game. There does seem that some thought toward colorblind players was put into the color choices. I do not have any issues with the colors in this game.

Reviewing Viticulture for Color Blindness

Summary
Viticulture is a very nice vibrant looking game. There are a few places in the game where color is the only channel of information given to a player to make a decision. Color blind players will need to inspect the pieces/cards to see if they can distinguish the pieces enough to play. For me, there is a few times during the game, where I have a hard time with blue/purple icons. Comparing other icons in the game help to distinguish them.

Reviewing Quebec for Color Blindness

Summary
Quebec is an incredibly colorful game, possibly too much. A few different design choices (building type icons, less color on buildings) would have made the game much better for colorblind players. The board feels incredibly busy. While there is enough additional information to make decisions, it can feel like an overwhelming amount of color. I am able to play the game without issues, but I could see others having problems.

Reviewing Lighthouse Run for Color Blindness

Summary
Lighthouse Run is a very pleasant family game. It looks really great on the table and isn’t strongly dependent on luck. Through my superior planning, I was able to crush my kids. Color is not the only channel of information for decisions, and that makes the game work well for me. Lighthouse run does a great job of making a colorful game that doesn't have roadblocks for color blind players.
